DENVER RECORDING ARTIST TO PERFORM DURING
PLANETARIUM LASER CHRISTMAS SHOW AT EDINBORO
Denver, Colorado recording artist Phil Bair will help ring in the Christmas season during
“Star of Wonder” at Edinboro University of Peimsylvania on Friday, December 1. Two programs
will be held at 7 and 9 p.m. in Cooper Hall.
With roots in Christian contemporary as well as music to inspire meditation and
reflection, Bair has achieved a style that is simple and profound. He has been involved in music
for 25 years as guitarist and records all the instruments himself including acoustic, electric and
12-string guitars, ffetless bass and digital piano, strings, synthesizer, and percussion.
The planetarium is one of Bair’s favorite venues. During the “Star of Wonder,” planets,
stars, laser effects, spectacular color bursts and foil motion video will accent his music to
produce a powerful and intriguing media experience not quite possible anywhere else.

OPENS NEW OUTREACH CENTER
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will officially open its new Meadville Access
Center in Meadville’s Downtown Mall this Friday, December 1, with an 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting
ceremony and an all-day public open house beginning at 11:30 a.m. and continuing until 6 p.m.
In recognition of the grand opening, the City of Meadville and Crawford Coimty are
proclaiming December 1 as Edinboro University Day.
“Edinboro University is proud to have served the citizens of Meadville and Crawford
County for more than 140 years, and we look forward to expanding our presence in the area to
better serve the people there,” said Edinboro President Frank G. Pogue. “Our new Meadville
Access Center will give residents of Meadville, Crawford County and beyond an even greater
access to the vast array of programs and services their public university offers.”
Remarks, proclamations and other presentations begin the day’s events at 11 a.m. in the
center stage area of the Downtown Mall. Activities then move to the Meadville Access Center
for the symbolic ribbon-cutting that officially begins operation of the facility and welcomes
visitors to the Open House.
President Pogue, along with Edinboro faculty, administrators, staff and students will be
on hand throughout the day at the Open House. There will also be a book signing with Crimson
Stain author and professor Jim Fisher from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The first 100 guests will
receive complimentary copies of Fisher’s latest book, which recounts the murder by a Crawford
Coimty Amish man of his wife in 1993.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY BATES GALLERY TO HOST THESIS EXHIBIT
Peggy Brace, a master of fine art candidate at Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania, will exhibit her thesis of oil paintings and drawings at the Bates Gallery in
Loveland Hall from December 3 through 15.
Brace has had a strong season of exhibitions including receiving the Juror’s
Choice Award at the Butler Institute of American Art National Midyear Exhibition. This
is believed to be the oldest national juried museum exhibition in the United States.
She was accepted in the Erie Art Museum Spring Show, and won Best of Show in
the Erie Panorama Exhibit. Her work was juried in the Audubon Artist 58* Annual
Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and is currently at the 64* Area
Artists Annual Exhibition at the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio.
An opening reception is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 7.
The public is welcome to attend. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday
through Friday.

stop at Edinboro was his only visit to a public higher education
institution in northwestern Pennsylvania.
Erie broadcasting legend Myron Jones (right), here with Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank Pogue, was the keynote speaker at the
University’s fall Communication Week luncheon. His address capped a weeklong series of events that brought experts to the campus from journalism,
broadcasting, public relations, advertising, marketing, corporate commumcations,
speech-language pathology and the Internet. Jones was presented a Lifetime
Achievement Award by the University and its Department of Speech and
Communication Studies, and it was announced that the WJET scholarship was
being renamed the Myron Jones WJET Scholarship in his honor. Broadcasting
pioneer Jones entered the Erie market in 1951 when he bought what became
WJET radio for $120. He told the luncheon audience that even with advances
in today’s communications technology, the “old media” will not go away.
“Prepare for the future, but look to the past for guidance,” said Jones.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania athletic director and USA Wrestling President
Bruce Baumgartner will appear on NBC’s Today show.Kjlednesday, November 15, to present an
Olympic gold medal to U.S. wrestler Brandon Slay. Als((^ receiving medals will be new silver
medalist Moon Eui-jae of Korea and new bronze medftlist Adem Bereket of Turkey.
Slay was awarded the gold medal in the 7^g (167 poimds) weight division after
Alexander Liepold of Germany was stripped of the medal by the International Olympic
Committee last month after failing a drug test. Katie (Douric is scheduled to interview Slay
before the ceremony.
International Olympic Committee First Vice President Anita DeFrantz will also be part of
the medal and flower presentation.
The ceremony will take place at Rockefeller Plaza off West 49* Street in New York
between 7 and 9 a.m. EST. (Final segment time will be confirmed after 3 p.m. EST, today by
NBC.)
Baumgartner, described many times as the finest heavyweight wrestler in American
history, was an Olympic gold medallist in 1984 and 1992, a silver medallist in 1988, and a
bronze medallist in 1996. He holds a record 13 world and Olympic wrestling titles and was the
1995 Sullivan Award winner as the nation’s finest amateur athlete. The former head wrestling
coach at Edinboro University has been athletic director since February 1998.

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK
For the third year in a row, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania students are
volunteering this week for the Edinboro Alternative Spring Break. Led by Community Outreach
Coordinator Dr. Denise Finazzo, the 11 Edinboro students will serve in a variety of ways at the
following locations:
Monday, March 8, Strong Vincent High School, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Tuesday, March 9, Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Wednesday, March 10, Gertrude Barber Center, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Thursday, March 11, Community Shelter Services, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Friday, March 12, Edinboro community, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The students will tutor children, assist in classrooms, mentor high school students,
unpack donated food items, distribute food at the food bank, houseclean, paint, wallpaper, file
and assist the elderly in reading to youngsters.
The students are Elizabeth Bentley, Amanda Boleratz, Pam Dery, Cathlene Dugway,
Kristen Euliano, Rebecca Ilniski, Jan Lewis, Stacey Ludwick, Christa Praetzel, Danielle Shaner
and Mark Weir.

Edinboro Students Build Habitat for Humanity Home in North Carolina
While thousands of college students were spending their spring break in sunny Florida, a group from
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania's residence life and housing staff endured rain and cool
temperatures to build a house for a needy family in Cape Fear, North Carolina. The 10 students and
two staff and faculty members took part in a Habitat for Humanity project, March 6-13, building
floors, walls and the roof, and installing doors and windows.
Joining the Edinboro contingent were 11 students from Eureka College in Illinois, and two students
from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. Not only did the volunteers give up their free
time to work on the project, each one chipped in or raised $150 to help defray the cost of building
materials. They were housed in the basement of the St. Andrew Covenant Presbyterian Church in
Wilmington, and area churches provided most of their meals.
The University provided two vans for the trip and two advisers. The residence life staff organized the
trip and the Student Government Association contributed $500.
Beth Shick, an Edinboro University residence hall coordinator, said students got a lot out of working
on the project for a good cause. "It was an incredible experience to watch the house come up in front
of our eyes," said Shick. WTien the smdents arrived on the first day, only part of the foundation was in
place. By the end of the week the roof and exterior walls of the house were up and some of the
interior was taking shape.
Laura Paul, a senior from Edinboro, was one of the assistant residence hall coordinators who
organized the trip. She said all of the students took turns in most facets of the construction - digging,
nailing, sawing and even laying down the concrete foundation.
Working alongside with them was the single mother who would be moving into the house. "The best
part was knowing you were down there helping someone," said Paul.
Meeting the family who would live in the house and seeing who would benefit from their work was a
very emotional experience for the volunteers. Before leaving North Carolina, everyone signed his or
her name on the house.
Despite the inconvenience of sleeping on cots and sharing two showers among 30 people, Paul said
she would do it again and is already helping to plan next year's trip and other projects for Edinboro's
Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s Community Outreach Center will host an open
house on Wednesday, November 15, from 4-6 p.m. in 137 McNemey Hall to introduce its
AmeriCorps volunteers and announce a new American Humanics Nonprofit Leadership
Certificate program funded through the Pennsylvania Campus Compact.
Students who are involved in community service or are required to do so through
organizations or classes can become involved in several ongoing projects that focus on
education/literacy and health/human services.
The Outreach Center is also available to students who qualify for Federal Work Study
and are interested in doing community service for pay.
Civic Leadership, the first coxirse offered in the American Humanics Certificate program,
will be held at Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center, on Tuesdays, from 5-7:30
p.m. beginning in the spring 2001 semester. Civic Leadership will offer mentorships with CEOs
of nonprofit agencies at their sites and will cover training in leadership.
Edinboro University has seven active AmeriCorps members who each contribute 700
hours in direct service to more than ten projects. Members of the Outreach Center are recruiting
volunteers to help support AmeriCorps projects, which include America Reads, America Counts,
Alternative Spring Break, Empty Bowls, tutoring at Edinboro Elementary School, Recycling for
2"** Harvest Food Bank, Books Across the World, Kids’ Cafe, American Smoke-Out, Leukemia
Light the Night, and American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The Center would also like to
partner with other groups in long-term projects in the community and on the Edinboro University
campus.

Geoffrey Landis, senior research scientist at the NASA John Gleim Research Center, will
share his experience with the Sojourner Rover during “Mission to Mars” at Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania on Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in Cooper Hall.
Landis was the principal investigator on the Mars Pathfinder mission where his project
involved understanding the effects of Martian dust. He has published more than 200 scientific
papers in the fields of photovoltaics, powered systems for space and astronautics, and holds four
patents on photovoltaic device designs.
Currently, he is developing instruments for ftiture Mars missions, propulsion systems for
interstellar probes, and solar power systems for Earth energy use.
Landis will discuss Mars, solar power and current plans for ftiture NASA and European
missions to Mars. He will be available for interviews before and after his presentation.

Shelly Klinek has been appointed assistant professor in the educational services
department at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She comes to Edinboro from Deersville,
Ohio, where she worked for 15 years as an adapted physical education teacher, and a Special
Olympics coach and coordinator for Harrison County.
Klinek received a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education along with training

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the Penncrest School District will sign
an articulation agreement on Thursday, November 2, at 11 a.m., at the Penncrest
Administration Office located on Route 198 in Saegertown.
Signing the agreement for Edinboro University will be President Frank G. Pogue
and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert C. Weber. Signing for
Penncrest will be Superintendent Ronald Reyer and Secondary Curriculum Supervisor
William Carlson.
The agreement will allow Cambridge Springs, Maplewood and Saegertown
students who enroll at Edinboro within two years of graduation to transfer honors level
and advanced level courses in English, mathematics and science. To receive credit,
students must maintain an “B” or higher for each course. The transferred courses will

manager of human resources at GE Transportation Systems in Erie.

DENVER RECORDING ARTIST TO PERFORM DURING
PLANETARIUM LASER CHRISTMAS SHOW AT EDINBORO
Denver, Colorado recording artist Phil Bair will help ring in the Christmas season during
“Star of Wonder” at Edinboro University of Peimsylvania on Friday, December 1. Two programs
will be held at 7 and 9 p.m. in Cooper Hall.
With roots in Christian contemporary as well as music to inspire meditation and
reflection, Bair has achieved a style that is simple and profound. He has been involved in music
for 25 years as guitarist and records all the instruments himself including acoustic, electric and
12-string guitars, ffetless bass and digital piano, strings, synthesizer, and percussion.
The planetarium is one of Bair’s favorite venues. During the “Star of Wonder,” planets,
stars, laser effects, spectacular color bursts and foil motion video will accent his music to
produce a powerful and intriguing media experience not quite possible anywhere else.

In recognition of the grand opening, the City of Meadville and Crawford Coimty are
proclaiming December 1 as Edinboro University Day.

County for more than 140 years, and we look forward to expanding our presence in the area to

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY BATES GALLERY TO HOST THESIS EXHIBIT
Peggy Brace, a master of fine art candidate at Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania, will exhibit her thesis of oil paintings and drawings at the Bates Gallery in
Loveland Hall from December 3 through 15.
Brace has had a strong season of exhibitions including receiving the Juror’s
Choice Award at the Butler Institute of American Art National Midyear Exhibition. This
is believed to be the oldest national juried museum exhibition in the United States.
She was accepted in the Erie Art Museum Spring Show, and won Best of Show in
the Erie Panorama Exhibit. Her work was juried in the Audubon Artist 58* Annual
Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and is currently at the 64* Area
Artists Annual Exhibition at the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio.
An opening reception is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 7.

Erie broadcasting legend Myron Jones (right), here with Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank Pogue, was the keynote speaker at the
University’s fall Communication Week luncheon. His address capped a weeklong series of events that brought experts to the campus from journalism,
broadcasting, public relations, advertising, marketing, corporate commumcations,
speech-language pathology and the Internet. Jones was presented a Lifetime
Achievement Award by the University and its Department of Speech and
Communication Studies, and it was announced that the WJET scholarship was
being renamed the Myron Jones WJET Scholarship in his honor. Broadcasting
pioneer Jones entered the Erie market in 1951 when he bought what became
WJET radio for $120. He told the luncheon audience that even with advances
in today’s communications technology, the “old media” will not go away.
“Prepare for the future, but look to the past for guidance,” said Jones.

Slay was awarded the gold medal in the 7^g (167 poimds) weight division after
Alexander Liepold of Germany was stripped of the medal by the International Olympic
Committee last month after failing a drug test. Katie (Douric is scheduled to interview Slay
before the ceremony.
International Olympic Committee First Vice President Anita DeFrantz will also be part of

Baumgartner, described many times as the finest heavyweight wrestler in American

1995 Sullivan Award winner as the nation’s finest amateur athlete. The former head wrestling
coach at Edinboro University has been athletic director since February 1998.

For the third year in a row, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania students are
volunteering this week for the Edinboro Alternative Spring Break. Led by Community Outreach
Coordinator Dr. Denise Finazzo, the 11 Edinboro students will serve in a variety of ways at the
following locations:
Monday, March 8, Strong Vincent High School, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Tuesday, March 9, Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Wednesday, March 10, Gertrude Barber Center, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Thursday, March 11, Community Shelter Services, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Friday, March 12, Edinboro community, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The students will tutor children, assist in classrooms, mentor high school students,
unpack donated food items, distribute food at the food bank, houseclean, paint, wallpaper, file
and assist the elderly in reading to youngsters.
The students are Elizabeth Bentley, Amanda Boleratz, Pam Dery, Cathlene Dugway,
Kristen Euliano, Rebecca Ilniski, Jan Lewis, Stacey Ludwick, Christa Praetzel, Danielle Shaner

Edinboro Students Build Habitat for Humanity Home in North Carolina
While thousands of college students were spending their spring break in sunny Florida, a group from
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania's residence life and housing staff endured rain and cool
temperatures to build a house for a needy family in Cape Fear, North Carolina. The 10 students and
two staff and faculty members took part in a Habitat for Humanity project, March 6-13, building
floors, walls and the roof, and installing doors and windows.
Joining the Edinboro contingent were 11 students from Eureka College in Illinois, and two students
from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. Not only did the volunteers give up their free
time to work on the project, each one chipped in or raised $150 to help defray the cost of building
materials. They were housed in the basement of the St. Andrew Covenant Presbyterian Church in
Wilmington, and area churches provided most of their meals.
The University provided two vans for the trip and two advisers. The residence life staff organized the
trip and the Student Government Association contributed $500.
Beth Shick, an Edinboro University residence hall coordinator, said students got a lot out of working
on the project for a good cause. "It was an incredible experience to watch the house come up in front
of our eyes," said Shick. WTien the smdents arrived on the first day, only part of the foundation was in
place. By the end of the week the roof and exterior walls of the house were up and some of the
interior was taking shape.
Laura Paul, a senior from Edinboro, was one of the assistant residence hall coordinators who
organized the trip. She said all of the students took turns in most facets of the construction - digging,
nailing, sawing and even laying down the concrete foundation.
Working alongside with them was the single mother who would be moving into the house. "The best
part was knowing you were down there helping someone," said Paul.
Meeting the family who would live in the house and seeing who would benefit from their work was a
very emotional experience for the volunteers. Before leaving North Carolina, everyone signed his or
her name on the house.
Despite the inconvenience of sleeping on cots and sharing two showers among 30 people, Paul said
she would do it again and is already helping to plan next year's trip and other projects for Edinboro's
Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s Community Outreach Center will host an open
house on Wednesday, November 15, from 4-6 p.m. in 137 McNemey Hall to introduce its
AmeriCorps volunteers and announce a new American Humanics Nonprofit Leadership
Certificate program funded through the Pennsylvania Campus Compact.
Students who are involved in community service or are required to do so through
organizations or classes can become involved in several ongoing projects that focus on
education/literacy and health/human services.
The Outreach Center is also available to students who qualify for Federal Work Study
and are interested in doing community service for pay.
Civic Leadership, the first coxirse offered in the American Humanics Certificate program,
will be held at Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center, on Tuesdays, from 5-7:30
p.m. beginning in the spring 2001 semester. Civic Leadership will offer mentorships with CEOs

Edinboro University has seven active AmeriCorps members who each contribute 700
hours in direct service to more than ten projects. Members of the Outreach Center are recruiting
volunteers to help support AmeriCorps projects, which include America Reads, America Counts,
Alternative Spring Break, Empty Bowls, tutoring at Edinboro Elementary School, Recycling for
2"** Harvest Food Bank, Books Across the World, Kids’ Cafe, American Smoke-Out, Leukemia
Light the Night, and American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The Center would also like to
partner with other groups in long-term projects in the community and on the Edinboro University
campus.

Geoffrey Landis, senior research scientist at the NASA John Gleim Research Center, will
share his experience with the Sojourner Rover during “Mission to Mars” at Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania on Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in Cooper Hall.
Landis was the principal investigator on the Mars Pathfinder mission where his project
involved understanding the effects of Martian dust. He has published more than 200 scientific
papers in the fields of photovoltaics, powered systems for space and astronautics, and holds four
patents on photovoltaic device designs.
Currently, he is developing instruments for ftiture Mars missions, propulsion systems for
interstellar probes, and solar power systems for Earth energy use.
Landis will discuss Mars, solar power and current plans for ftiture NASA and European
missions to Mars. He will be available for interviews before and after his presentation.

Shelly Klinek has been appointed assistant professor in the educational services
department at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She comes to Edinboro from Deersville,

precalculus, and introduction to biology.

paintings, drawings, and mixed media works will be on display through November 17.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will be holding its Third Annual Dinner for Professional
Development - also known as the “Etiquette Dinner” - this Friday, November 3, 6-8:30 p.m., in the
Van Houten Dining Hall’s University Club.
Hosted by the Edinboro University Highland Ambassadors - the organization of students who
serve and assist the University while enhancing their own educational and social experiences - the
dinner is sponsored by the Edinboro University Alumni Association, Erie’s GE Transportation
Systems, and the Wood Food Company.
Special guests at this year’s dinner will include the Mercyhurst College Ambassadors.
Over a five-course goiumet dinner featuring surf and turf as the main entree, manners and
etiquette consultant Nancy Mihalovic will be reminding those in attendance: when and only when it’s
permissible to put elbows on the table; not to cut but rather break bread; never to pass the salt and
pepper separately; when the napkin goes on the lap, the chair or the table; the proper way to eat soup;
and how to “work your way in” firom a table setting of four forks, three spoons and two knives, among
other fine dining tips.
Edinboro alumna and retired University employee Mihalovic is the former coordinator at
Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center and manners and etiquette consultant to the
Highland Ambassadors. She now resides in Athens, Ga., where she continues to consult on matters of
etiquette and protocol.
Providing the evening’s keynote address, titled “Success Characteristics,” will be John Davem,
manager of human resources at GE Transportation Systems in Erie.
Edinboro University President Dr. Frank Pogue will conclude the evening with a toast to the
Senior Class underscoring this year’s dinner theme, “Mealtime Civility.”
