RACHAEL HARPER TO BE PUBLISHED IN NEW AMERICAN PAINTINGS
Rachael Harper, art professor at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, was one of
44 artists selected from over 600 who competed in the Fifth Open Studios Mid-Atlantic
Competition recently. As a result of this competition, three of Harper’s oil paintings will
appear in New American Paintings, making this her second inclusion in the catalog.
Founded in 1993, New American Paintings features exhibitions-in-print and has
become a national showcase for emerging and regionally established artists. The Open
Studios Competitions attracts thousands of serious, professional artists each year. Juried
by curators of contemporary art from prominent museums, these exhibitions of the
winners’ work are free of commercial influence and academic bias. Howard Fox, curator
of Contemporary Art at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, juried the latest
competition.
Harper selects objects for her paintings that are usually handed down from
generation to generation, with some history and stories attached. “Aside from the human
form,” Harper said, “the subjects that attract me are things that symbolize a connection to
the past and to other people.”
Two of Harper’s paintings will also be included in the 43rd Chautauqua National
Competitive Exhibition. “Finding Your Niche” and “What Remains” will be among
approximately 80 pieces from more than 900 submissions selected by Murry Home,

AUSTRALIAN STORYTELLER AND MUSICIAN
TO PERFORM AT EDINBORO
For those of you planning to follow or, even perhaps, attend the Summer
Olympics in Australia, you won’t want to miss the presentation of Australian storyteller
and musician Paul Taylor on Monday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium at
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Taylor captivates his audience as he exposes them
to the musical tradition of the didjeridoo, an ancient Aboriginal instrument.
Taylor graduated from Adelaide University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in social work and spent time as a social worker among the Aboriginal people in
Australia’s Northern Territory where his interest in the Aboriginal culture of his own
country developed. While working in the Outback, he was introduced to the music of the
didjeridoo, one of the world’s oldest musical instruments.
In the mid-1980s, Taylor trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic
Art in London. He worked professionally as an actor and clown, joined a circus show and
performed throughout England, Scotland and Wales. He returned to his homeland and
worked professionally in regional theatres throughout Australia. Taylor was invited to the
United States to act as a “mountain man” in Bobby Bridget’s version of “Ballad of the
West.” While attending the Jackson Hole Centennial Rendezvous in 1990, Taylor was
initiated into the world of the mountain men and given the name of “Walking Stick.” He
loved his visit to the United States so much that he decided to return in 1992 and
commence an extensive “Walkabout” of the United States. He is currently based in
Laramie, Wyoming, the heart of America’s outback.
A member of the State System of Higher Education
Endorsed by arts councils in Texas, Wyoming, Utah, North Dakota and South
Dakota as an outstanding artist, Taylor’s performances highlight unique historical
parallels of America’s West with Australia’s Outback.
Tickets for Taylor are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and free to Edinboro
students, faculty and staff. For more information, contact Edinboro University’s cultural
affairs office at 814-732-2518.
