Bloomsburg University is a multi-purpose institution of higher
education serving the citizens of Pennsylvania as one of the 14
Commonwealth-owned universities. With a commitment to provide
a quality, affordable education for all qualified students, Bloomsburg
combines the tradition of an institution founded in 1839 with modem
learning, living, and recreational programs and facilities. Commonwealth funding provides 55 percent ofBloomsburg's annual
operating budget.
Undergraduate students may emoll in degree programs in 64
areas of study in the arts and sciences, business, teacher education,
nursing, and health sciences. A program in engineering is offered in
conjunction with the Pennsylvania State University, and preparation
for post-baccalaureate study at professional schools is offered.
Unique education opportunities are available through advanced
placement, study abroad, professional practicum, internships,
independent study, and the Department of Developmental Instruction
programs.
At the graduate level, the master's degree is offered in 25 areas
of study, and there are 10 supervisory certification programs in the
field of teacher education.
Extended program offerings provide continuing, life-long
learning opportunities for people of all ages and educational interest
through non-degree courses, non-credit mini-courses offered at offcampus locations, and by public service television and credit for
work experience.
Instruction is provided by a 367-member staff.
The university's 173-acre campus overlooks the Town of
Bloomsburg and the scenic Susquehanna Valley. Carver Hall, built
in 1867, provides a contrast with the modem facilities that include
seven residence halls, a library, a 2,000-seat auditorium, student
union, dining hall, gymnasium, administration building, five
classroom buildings, athletic fields, and recreational areas on the
lower campus.
An athletic complex and recreational area occupy the school's
100-acre upper campus. In addition, the James H. McCormick
Center for Human Services is the newest building on the lower
campus and was used for the first time in the fall of 1985.
Located less than two miles from an Interstate 80 interchange
and 22 miles from Interstate 81, Bloomsburg is within one hour's
driving time from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hazleton, and Williamsport, and 1 1/2 hours from Harrisburg,
Bloomsburg has an enviable placement record. Of the 1,104
who graduated in the 1984-85 academic year, 81.4 percent have
meaningful employment or were in gradutae school one year later.
Active files of over 25,000 living alumni are kept by the
university. Graduates of Bloomsburg University have distinguished
themselves in areas including law, medicine (one is a Nobel Laureate), science, architecture, education, industry, and research.
Bloomsburg University is fully accredited by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Pennsylvania Board of
Education.

I
Despite major losses at the pitching and catching positions, the
Huskies' head coach Jan Hutchinson feels confident that the team
could record its seventh straight Pennsylvania Conference title and
make its tenth-consecutive national tournament appearance.
"Good defense has always been a strong point at Bloomsburg,
but we expect to have our best defensive team ever," Hutchinson
said. "We have strong players and are two deep at every position in
the infield. In addition the outfield should be extremely solid."
Even with the losses of All-Americans Cindy Freelan, at catcher
and Kristen Upcraft, a pitcher, along with Joanna Sulmonetti, the
Huskies have 12 veterans returning and five talented freshmen
joining the team.
The lone senior on the club is third baseman, Helen Fausnaught.
Fausnaught batted .340 last season, four doubles, 30 singles, 16 runs
scored, and 18 rbis. She also had 24 putouts and 64 assists defensively.
Juniors Cindy Slocum, Paula Miller, and Gina Lindenmuth will
also return. Slocum, a 1988 All-American outfielder, had a batting
average of .360, with 38 singles, six doubles, four triples, two home
runs, 25 runs scored, and 35 rbis. Miller will be joining Slocum in
the outfield. She scored nine runs last season, had 13 hits, three rbis,
and batted .232. Lindenmuth is the only returning pitcher for the
Huskies and should be the club's mound ace. She had a record of
10-1 last season. In 78.7 innings pitched, she walked 29, struck out,
25 gave up 66 hits, 24 runs, and 14 earned runs for an earned run
average of 1.25.
The outfield will again include sophomores Janet Buckheit and
Tracy Nilles. Buckheit registered 30 putouts, 15 assists, and batted
.271 with 13 singles, five doubles, a triple, nine runs, and 15 rbis.
Nilles batted .208 with four singles and a triple. She also had four
runs scored and two rbis.
The infield positions will be filled mainly by sophomores this
season as six return. Back are Patti Camper, Sandy Herr, Terry
Hosier, Lori Shelly, Diane Tafel, and Julie Wolfe.
Camper, at first base, batted .291 last season. She had 25
singles, three doubles, one triple, 11 runs scored, and 11 rbis. She
fielded 247 putouts and had 15 assists. Herr split time at first base
and shortstop the past year. She had 111 putouts and seven assits
and hit nine singles, two doubles, four runs scored, nine rbis, and
batted .297. Hosier saw action at second base. She had a batting
average of .333, three hits, four runs, and two rbis. She also had 10
putouts and 16 assists.
Shelly was the backup catcher playing behind Cindy Freeland.
She batted .357, hit 25 singles, 13 doubles, four triples, four home
runs, 26 runs scored, and 38 rbis serving mainly as the Huskies'
designated hitter. Playing parttime at third base was Tafel, who
batted .323, had 10 hits, three runs scored, and five rbis. She had five
putouts and 22 assists. Wolfe, who played at shortstop position,
batted .366, hit 38 singles, five doubles, one triple, four homeruns, 36
runs scored, and 29 rbis. She had 65 putouts and 85 assists.

5

Certain to be major contributors are five freshmen, Janelle
Breneman, Christa Clauser, Marty Laudato, Ann Southard, and
Heather Young.
Breneman was the shortstop for the 1988 state champion softball
team at Ephrata High School. She has great range and a strong arm to
first base.
Competing for time at the catching position, Laudato should
keep base runners honest. She has good mechanics and an extremely
strong throw to any base. She is also a power hitter who should help
the offense immediately.
Aiding Lindenmuth on the mound will be Clauser, Southhard,
and Young.
Clauser could immediately strengthen the pitching staff. She is
a hard worker with good form and control. With the experience from
the fall, she has the potential to be a major contributor this season.
Southard is a versatile pitcher who has a strong wrist snap. She
is an excellent fielding pitcher who has a good changeup. She is
working on adding a drop to her repertoire.
Young is making constant improvement on the mound. She
threw 10 no-hitters her senior year in high school. She throws hard
and has a good curve ball. She also is a good hitter and should be a
threat at the plate.
"Offensively, we will be a major threat to score in a hurry at any
time. There is a good amount of talent both in the veterans as well as
the incoming freshmen. In addition, there are several good bunters,
so we intend to mix it up at the plate."
