Head Coach
Jan Hutchinson
Jan Hutchinson begins her ninth
season as Bloomsburg University's
head softball coach in search of
the school's fourth straight 30-win
season. Hutchinson's squads have
compiled 98 victories (33-4, 30-4,
and 35-6) over the last three years
for an .875 winning percentage.
Last season's team won its third
consecutive Pennsylvania Conference Championship and also advanced to the NCAA Eastern
Regional for the third consecutive year. However, Akron defeated the Huskies in the regional final.
Last year, Bloomsburg advanced to the finals of the PC tourney
with victories over Edinboro and Shippensburg before a Sue Luna
two-run double plated the winning run in the top of the seventh
for a 2-0 finals victory over Lock Haven. BU has now gone three
consecutive seasons without yielding a run in PC Tournament
action. In the opening game of the East Regional, Akron scored
four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture a 5-4
victory. The Huskies rebounded to down Sam Houston St. in a 4-2
win. Akron then downed BU as two first-inning runs stood up in a
2-0 victory, advancing them to the final four.
Hutchinson, a native of Newton, NJ, received her Bachelor of
Science Degree in 1 971 and earned her Master of Education
Degree in Physical Education in 1979, both from East Stroudsburg University. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, she was a
member of the faculty of the Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ.
There she initiated an interscholastic sports program for women
and served as head coach of the field hockey, basketball, and
softball teams.
In 1982, Hutchinson was one of the first coaches ever to lead
two teams to national titles in the same year as both the BU field
hockey and softball teams captured AIAW titles.
Assistant Coach
Tina Souders
Tina Souders enters her second season as an assistant softball
coach at Bloomsburg. She graduated from BU in 1984 with a
degree in Sociology/Social Welfare. Souders was a four-year
starter for the softball team and holds multiple game, season, and
career pitching records.
Her 74 career victories, against just 11 loses, is a school record.
Other career marks include 63 5 strikeouts, 610 innings pitched,
and a 0.34 earned run average. Souders also has many season and
game records to her credit. They include: lowest earned run
average, 0.23; most strikeouts, 207; fewest walks, 13; most
shutouts, 18; and most consecutive victories, 22.
2
- - - - - outlook - - - - -
,.
It takes good pitching and solid hitting to win softball games
and the Bloomsburg University Huskies have both - - again!! The
three-time defending Pennsylvania Conference champions
return their entire pitching staff, which had a combined 0.42
earned run average and all but one player from a club that batted
.290 in a season that saw the team win a school record 3 5 games,
win its third conference crown in a row and reach the NCAA
Division 11 quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.
Ninth year head coach Jan Hutchinson has an overall record of
176-53 and knows what she expects from her 1986 Huskies.
"Last year we started out thinking about a rebuilding season and
just didn't expect the amount of success we had. The kids were
really green but played extremely well. With the exception of one
or two innings, we could have been in the 'final four.' This season,
we have our strongest hitting lineup ever and all three pitchers
back, so can only look for another good year."
Junior Susan Kocher heads the veteran mound corps that
includes senior Chris Moyer and sophomore Jill Solinski. In 1985,
Kocher registered the nation's second best ERA of 0.23 and had a
record of 16-2. She struck out 130 and allowed just 59 hits to the
464 opponent batters she faced in 21 innings during the season.
Kocher is 25-3 in her first two seasons at Bloomsburg.
Moyer enjoyed an 11-3 mark a year ago and had an 0.72 ERA.
She struck out 59 batters while walking just 17 in 97 innings. The
fourth-year performer posted an unblemished 16-0 record in her
first two seasons with the club and is 27-3 overall in her career.
As a freshman, Solinski entered Bloomsburg as one of the most
highly touted pitchers in Pennsylvania. She saw limited time
behind the two veteran performers but managed to post an 8-1
record with an ERA of 0.33. She struck out 58 opponents in 64
innings of work.
The trio combined for 24 7 strikeouts and walked only 84 of the
1,068 batters they faced. They allowed 43 runs, 17 of which were
earned and gave up 1 50 hits.
Senior Karen Hertzler, who gained All-American status at
second base in 1984, may wonder at times if she is in the right
position if Hutchinson's infield plans hold their pre-season form.
Hertzler, who hit .344 last season, was the only Husky to play in
every game and earned All-Pennsylvania Conference honors
along with Kocher, third baseman Kathy Berry and rightfielder
Suzanne Luna, is set at her position but six others could share
time at the other spots. A lot will depend on where standout Jean
Millen ends up. The senior missed all of the 1985 campaign with a
knee injury but returns ready to play at either first base or
shortstop. She hit .301 two years ago and led the team in doubles,
triples and homeruns as well as runs batted in and walks. Millen
was the lone BU performer to play in all 36 games that year.
Berry can move from her third base position to first where she
played some last season while hitting .304. She is a contact hitter
who struck out only once in 102 at bats and had the top fielding
percentage among the starting infield at .961. Lori Pisco can also
play at either corner and got plenty of game experience in 28
contests in 1985.
Last year's starting shortstop, Donna Graup handled the position well in her first season with the club after transferring from
Lock Haven and adds to Hutchinson's list of talented infielders
who will see plenty of time with Millen at first base or can fill in at
third. Sophomore Kim Fey moves over from the BU lacrosse team
and is pressing the veterans for a berth in the infield along with
3
newcomer Sherri Cooley.
Luna was a pleasant surprise last season as she stepped in as a
freshman and led the Huskies in hitting at a .352 clip. She
accounted for 1 5 extra base hits and led the team in doubles,
triples and homeruns. She will once again be in rightfield while
junior Kate Denneny will patrol leftfield where she played in 38
games a year ago and hit .304. She was also the squad's top
defensive player, not committing an error during the 1985
season.
Joan Lewis the reserve centerfielder behind the lone graduated
senior Deb Schneiderhan, could take over that position or
transfer Donna Shief, a junior could assume those duties.
A battle for the starting catcher's berth a year ago never
materialized because returning performer Lori Guitson injured
her shoulder and was forced to designated hitter duties. Newcomer Cindy Freeland became the starter and did an outstanding
job behind the plate, recording the second highest fielding percentage among the regulars at .982. Both players are returning
and Guitson appears healthy, so that position boasts a pair of
proven quality performers. Freshman Robin Fioretti will back up
the duo.
The Huskies have won three PC titles and 98 games over the
past three seasons but each time have come up one game short of
the nation's "final four" tourney. Hutchinson's team must make
sure to retrace each step to get there again in 1986 and maybe
can make that elusive final one to take its shot at a national crown.
