- BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY" A Conunitment To Excellence"
Bloomsburg University is a multi-purpose institution of higher
education serving the citizens of Pennsylvania as one of the 14
Commonwealth-owned Universities . With a commitment to provide a quality, affordable education for all qualified students,
Bloomsburg combines the tradition of an institution founded in
1839 with modem learning, living, and recreational programs and
facilities. Commonwealth funding provides 55 percent of Bloomsburg's annual operating budget.
Undergraduate students may enroll in degree programs in 64
areas of study in the arts and sciences, business, teacher
education, nursing, and health sciences. A program in engineering
is offered in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State University,
and preparation for post-baccalaureate study at professional
schools is offered. Unique educational opportunities are available
through advanced placement, study abroad, professional practicum, internships, independent study and the Center for Academic
Development programs.
At the graduate level, the master's degree is offered in 25 areas
of study and there are ten supervisory certification programs in
the field of teacher education.
Extended program offerings provide continuing, life-long
learning opportunities for people of all ages and educational
interests through non-degree courses, non-credit mini-courses,
international studies and exchanges, cooperative education,
courses offered at oft-campus locations and by public service
television, and credit for work experience.
Enrollment for the Fall semester, 1984, totalled 6189 students.
There were5,045 full-time and 719 part-time undergraduates, and
93 full-time and 332 part-time graduate students. Instruction is
provided by a 342-member faculty.
The University's 173-acre campus overlooks the Town of
Bloomsburg and the scenic Susquehanna Valley. Carver Hall,
built in 1867, provides a contrast with the modem facilities that
include seven residence halls, a library, a 2,000-seat auditorium,
student union, dining hall, gymnasium, administration building,
five classroom buildings, athletic fields, and recreational areas
on the lower campus .
An athletic complex and recreational area occupy the school's
100-acre upper campus. In addition, the James H. McCormick
Center for Human Services is the newest building on the lower
campus and is being used for the first time this fall .
Located less than two miles from an Interstate 80 interchange
and 22 miles from Interstate 81, Bloomsburg is within one hour's
driving time from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hazleton, and
Williamsport, 1½ hours from Harrisburg, 2½ hours from Philadelphia, and 3 hours from New York City. The community is 45
miles from the Avoca International Airport and is serviced by
major bus lines.
Bloomsburg has an enviable placement record. Of the 1,183
who graduated in the 1982-83 academic year, 81 % had meaningful employment or were in graduate school one year later.
Active files of over 25,000 living alumni are kept by the
University. Graduates of BU have distinguished themselves in
areas including law, medicine (one is a Nobel Laureate), science,
architecture, education, industry, and research.
The Bloomsburg University is fully accredited by the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council
for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Pennsylvania
State Board of Education.

1983-84 Overall Record: 30-4
Head Coach- - - Jan Hutchinson
Jan Hutchinson enters her eighth season as head softball coach at
Bloomsburg University with a 141-47 record. Last season Bloomsburg posted a 30-4 record and was crowned Pennsylvania conference champions for the second straight year. The Huskies were
defeated by Sacred Heart in the Eastern Regional of the NCAA
Tournament, also for the second consecutive season. Hutchinson led
Bloomsburg to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women
(Al.AW) national title in 1982. In the last three seasons, her teams
have posted records of 28-4, 33-4, and 30-4 for an .833 winning
percentage.
A year ago, the Huskies advanced to the finals of the NCAA
Eastern Regional in Bridgeport, CT., but were defeated by Sacred
Heart. The tourney was a double elimination affair. Both Bloomsburg
and Sacred Heart defeated Mankato St. in their first round games to
set up a best of three format. Sacred Heart needed 23 innings in the
first game before pushing across the winning run for a 1-0 victory. The
Huskies bounced back to capture the second game 3-0 to set up the
final contest. Sacred Heart then took another 1-0 decision from the
Huskies, this time in eight innings, to advance to the national finals.
Hutchinson, a native of Newton, NJ, received her Bachelor of
Science Degree in 1971 and earned her Master of Education Degree
in Physical Education in 1979, both from East Stroudsburg University.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, she was a member of the faculty of the
Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ. There she initiated an interscholastic sports program for women and served as head coach of the
field hockey, basketball, and softball teams.
In 1982, Hutchinson was one of the first coaches ever to lead two
teams to national championships in the same year as both the BU
field hockey and softball teams captured Al.AW titles.
Assistant Coach
Tina Souders
Tina Souders is in her first season as an assistant softball coach at
Bloomsburg. She graduated from BU last year with a degree in
Sociology/Social Welfare. Souders was a four year starter for the
softball team and holds multiple game, season, and career pitching
records .
Her 74 career victories, against just 11 losses, is a school record.
Other career marks include 635 strikeouts, 610 innings pitched, and a
0.34 earned run average. Souders also has many season records to
her credit including: lowest earned run average, 0.23; most strikeouts,
207; fewest walks, 13; most shutouts, 18; and most consecutive
victories, 22.

OUTLOOK - - The members of the 1985 Bloomsburg University softball team are
going to have to forgive coach Jan Hutchinson if she calls them by the
wrong names for a little while this season. The coach, now in her
eighth year at the helm, spent the last four seasons watching the likes
of All-Americans Tina Souders, Denise Henderson, Anne Schmidt
and Kathy Behan, just to name a few, but that group has departed and
Hutchinson must depend on a young squad to defend the Pennsylvania Conference title the Huskies have won the past two seasons .
Eight seniors, including six starters and two regulars, graduated
from the unit that posted a 114-21 record over the past four seasons
and made a national tournament appearance each season. In
addition, standout junior Jean Millen will be sidelined for the entire
1985 campaign due to a knee injury suffered during the basketball
season.
"As a whole, we can potentially be a contender again," commented Hutchinson, who has posted a 141-47 record in her first seven
seasons at the school. "We won't have a superstar, but we should be
quicker than we've ever been and our pitching can be pretty good."
She added, "I guess you can call this a rebuilding year; we're
inexperienced from a playing time standpoint; we're young; we didn't
have what could be considered a great recruiting year, but with
the people we have around and the few we've added, I think we'll
surprise people."
With the graduation of Souders, who took with her a career mark of
74-11 and almost every school pitching record, the mound corps now
consists of junior Chris Moyer, sophomore Sue Kocher, and freshman
Jill Solinski.
Moyer has seen somewhat limited action in her first two years but
has yet to lose, posting a 16-0 mark in two seasons including a 5-0
slate in 1984. The righthander gave up only three earned runs in 41
innings for an ERA of 0.51. Kocher started her collegiate career off in
fine fashion a year ago as she went 9-1, including three consecutive
no-hitters and set a school record for consecutive hitless innings with
24. Also a righthander, she allowed three earned runs in 66 innings,
an ERA of 0.32. "Both of them have increased their variety of pitches,
specifically the drop for Chris and the rise for Sue," commented
Hutchinson.
Solinski according to Hutchinson "was the most outstanding
pitcher in northeastern Pennsylvania. She needs to develop more
pitches but has good speed." The coach added, "At least early in the
season we should have a fairly equal pitching rotation - all three will
see a lot of lime."
In addition to outstanding pitching over the past several seasons,
the Huskies have possessed a solid defense. In 1984, the unit handled
834 chances committing just 35 errors for a .958 fielding percentage .
"Our defense is going lo be so inexperienced and it's going to have
to come through if we're to be successful," Hutchinson commented.
A second team All-American at second base in 1983, Karen
Hertzler, will assume the shortstop duties this season. She committed
only two errors in 89 chances last year while hitting for a .363 average.
The junior led the team in singles (24) and was second in the sacrifice
department (7). She struck out once in 69 times at bat.
The cast surrounding Hertzler could vary a lot in the early part of
the season. Veteran Kathy Berry, who sat out last year due lo illness,
could return to her spot at third base or show up on the other side of
the diamond at first base. In 1983, she hit .299 while appearing in 34 of
3
BU' s 37 games. Sophomore Lori Pisco is battling Berry for the starting
role and could be in starting lineup al the comer not occupied by
Berry. Pisco saw action in only nine games last season.
Hutchinson is pleased with the play of both catchers - Lori GuiIson
and freshman Cindy Freeland, and when not behind the plate, either
could appear at first base. She stated, "They're having a good fight
for the spot and may split a lot of the doubleheaders. We may want
both in some games because of their good bats," Gui Ison hit .292 lasl
season.
Sophomore Diane Shields, and transfer Donna Graupp, are vying
for the second base job vacated by the move of Hertzler to shortstop.
"Getting the right combinations is the biggest trick," stated
Hutchinson. "It is such a new group that it's going to take some lime.
We know that replacing Jean Millen, who can play almost anywhere,
is going to be difficult."
The lone senior on the squad, Deb Schneiderhan, is the only
returning starter in the outfield and she will move from rightfield to
centerfield. Schneiderhan's bat is a question mark, but she was
second in stolen bases a year ago and did not commit an error in the
outfield.
Sophomores Kate Denneny, Kathy Molnar, and Joan Lewis, all
return with limited playing lime and, along with newcomer Sue Luna,
will seek the remaining openings in right and leftfield. Denneny's
solid hitting could give her an edge for one of the spots.
Hutchinson concluded, "There's a lot of leaching going on in the
pre-season and a lot depends on attitude and what they expect of
themselves. The group appears to be anxious to maintain our status
among the lop softball learns in this region."
