BLOOMSBURG
STATE COLLEGE
1982 All-Americans Kathy Behan (38), Denise
Henderson (CJ, Anne Schmidt (SS) and Tina
Souders (P)
Softball
1983
Outlook
A nucleus of ten veterans, including four AllAmericans, return to aid the Bloomsburg State College
softball team in its quest for a second straight national title.
Last season , the Huskies posted a 28-4 overall record
on the waytotheAIAW Division Ill National Title. This year
BSC has moved into the NCAA Division 11 , but the outlook
is just as bright. Returning All Americans Tina Souders (P) ,
Denise Henderson (C) , Anne Schmidt (SS) , and Kathy
Behan (3rd) will combine with four other returning starters
to keep the Huskies strong at all positions. The only loss
from last year's championship team is powerhitting Cheryl
Sedlak (2B) .
Pitching will once again be one of the team 's main
strengths with Souders, a junior, leading the staff. She
comes off a 21-2 season including a 5-0 record at
nationals . All five wins were shutouts with one of them
being a no-hitter. Backing her up will be junior Anne
Schmidt and freshman Chris Moyer who pitched Penns
Valley High School to a district championship last year.
Besides Henderson , Schmidt, and Behan, the other
returning starters are Carolyn Harley (LF) , Deb Long (CF),
Sue Hicks (RF) , and Laurie Snyder (1 B). Hicks was fourth
on the team in RBl's with 12 and also hit .269. Harley was
right behind Hicks with 11 RB l's and a .266 average. Long
was the second leading batter with a .333 average and also
drove in ten runs. Snyder's average fell to .197 last season,
and she will have to return to 1981 form when she led the
team with a .395 average.
Second base is wide open , and the battle should center
around three freshmen. Jean Millen and Karen Hertzler,
both starters for other varsity teams, and Kathy Berry, will
all try for the spot.
With outstanding pitching and defense and a slight
improvement on offense, the BSC move up to Division 11,
could end with a sec_o nd straight national title.
