SOFTBALL
Outlook
Head Coach
Optimism surrounds the 1981 edition of the Bloomsburg
State College softball team. Coach Jan Hutchinson's
squads have improved in each of the team's first three
years, with the finest effort coming a year ago when the
squad posted a 17-8 record .
This season's team will be made up of 18 players
including eleven freshmen and only two seniors. Captains
Roberta Spezialetti (3B) and Jeanette Mitroka (OF) will be
entering their fourth season for the Huskies and have
played for Hutchinson since softball became a varsity sport
at BSC in 1978. Junior pitcher Sue Kelly will be in her third
year with the team while sophomores Beth Rohrbach (SS),
Cheryl Sedlak (2B), Donna Bonfiglio (1 B), and Sue Hicks
(OF) also return.
A crop of very talented freshmen make up the remainder
of the team . Carolyn Harley (2B) and Cheryl Shulkusky (C)
come to BSC from a 28-2 Minersville H. S. team that has
won the PIAA Class AA championship the past two years
wh ile Anne Schmidt (SS) and Denise Henderson (C) join the
squad from Southern Lehigh H. S., a team that posted a 21-1
mark last season and finished among the top four in the
PIAA Class AAA playoffs after a second place showing in
1979. Two players from Parkland H. S. , another PIAA Class
AAA tournament participant who join the Huskies after
helping Parkland to an 18-2 record last season, are Tina
Souders (P) and Diane Sutjak (C). Mary Hassenplug (OF, C),
a member of the 1980 New Jersey Group IV state
champions from Morris Knolls H. S., and Kathy Behan (3B)
from Nutley H. S. , a New Jersey regional playoff team a year
ago, are expected to see action along with Deb Long (1 B,
OF), Laurie Snyder (C, OF), and Judy Major (P).
" We've got a good group of returning people and some
freshmen that came from great high school programs so
we 're anxious to see just how well we can play together,"
stated Hutchinson.
JAN HUTCHINSON, a member
of the Health, Physical Education and Athletics staff at BSC
since January 1978, is in her
fourth year as head softball
coach. She is also the Husky
field hockey coach.
A native of Newton, NJ, Mrs.
Hutchinson received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1971
from East Stroudsburg State
College and her Master of
Education degree in Physical Education from the same
institution in 1979.
Before coming to BSC, Mrs. Hutchinson was on the
faculty at Blair Academy, Blairstown , NJ, where she
initiated the women's interscholastic sports program and
served as head coach of field hockey, basketball and
softball. Her softball coaching record after three seasons at
