SOFTBALL
First row, holding bats [L-R]: Serafin, Barton!.
Second row: Kazal, Mahoney, Lambert, Motroka, Spezlalettl, Moyer, Yuraslts, Strausser [Asst. Coach].
Third row: Cnuhlnka, Washbum, Connelly, Goldberg, Houser, Kelly, Caswell, Hutchinson [Coach].
OUTLOOK
Softball is only in its third year at BSC but a steady
improvement has been shown. Two years ago the record
was 1-3. Coach Jan Hutchinson and her Huskies are now
aiming to improve on last year's 4-7 mark.
Hutchinson has about eight returning veterans among
her squad of seventeen. "With our returnees and new
talent, potentially we have the material for a good season.
Since we have all doubleheaders but one, everyone on the
squad should see action. Our returnees are strong and
quick, and we're looking forward to a good season. Poor
weather has hindered early practice sessions, making it
difficult to evaluate the players," she said.
Leading candidates for the starting line-up include:
pitcher - Sue Kelly; catcher - Chrissie Kazal; 1st base junior Sally Houser or sophomore Karen Caswell; 2nd
base - senior Jayne Yurasits or sophomore Ann Lambert;
shortstop - junior Carolyn Bartoni or freshman Deb
Chuhinka; 3rd base - sophomore Bert Spezialetti; outfield
- seniors Sandy Serafin and Donna Santa Maria and
sophomore Jeanette Mitroka.
Wilkes and Millersville are newcomers to the nineopponent schedule.
COACH
Jan Hutchinson who joined the
Health and Physical Education staff in
January 1978, is in her second year as
softball coach. She is also the Husky
Field Hockey Coach.
She is a 1971 physical education
graduate of East Stroudsburg where
she expects to receive her master's
degree the latter part of 1978. An
outstanding performer in field hockey,
basketbal I, and softbal I at Newton,
N.J., her college athletic career was
cut short in her freshman year at ESSC
when she suffered a severe leg injury.
Hutchinson served as head coach of field hockey, basketball
and softball at Blair Academy for six and a half years prior to
coming to BSC. She had quite an impressive record and none of
her teams ever had a losing season. In softball she posted 51 wins
against 13 losses, never losing to a team in her division. Her
teams moved up a division for state competition and placed
second the last two years.
Nina Strausser, second year assistant coach, is a Bloomsburg
native and received her BS degree in Physical Education from East
Stroudsburg State. She teaches elementary school physical
e_gucation in the Bloomsburg School district where she also
;(:i"~catio,; in the--Blo-o~sbu~g S~h~o-1 dist~i6t ~h~r~ she' ~1-;o
