OUTLOOK

COACH

Women's softball at Bloomsburg enters its second year as a
varsity sport. Most of the players are back from last year's
team that played a limited schedule, winning one game.
A strong defense categorizes this year's team according to
new coach Jan Hutchinson . "Our girls have quick reflexes and
are excellent fielders," she stated. "The schedule was
increased from four to eleven games, including three
doubleheaders, and this alone makes everyone more
enthused."
The lone senior on the squad of 16 is outfield/pitcher
Sharon Massa, Allentown, a co-captain. The other co-captain
is Carolyn Bartoni, a sophomore shortstop from Coplay. Five
pitchers are available for duty which can be especially
beneficial for the doubleheaders.
Hutchinson has been impressed with the speed the girls
possess in base running and in cutting off would-be hits.
Another feature that has caught her eye is the accuracy of
their throwing . "They are very careful in their approach to
throw out a runner and they perform with fluid motions," she
said.
The toughest opponents are expected to be Lock Haven and
Shippensburg, both of which have reputations for excellent
programs.

Jan Hutchinson joined the Health and
Physical Education staff in January
1978 after a very successful coaching
career at Blair Academy, Blairstown,
New Jersey.
She is a 1971 physical education
graduate of East Stroudsburg where she
expects to receive her master's degree
the latter part of 1978. An outstanding
performer in field hockey, basketball,
and softbal I at Newton, N .J., her
college athletic career was cut short in her freshman year at
ESSC when she suffered a severe leg injury.
Hutchison served as head coach of field hockey, basketball,
and softball at Blair Academy for six and a half years. She had
quite an impressive record and none of her teams ever had a
losing season. In softball she posted 51 wins against 13
losses, never losing to a team in her division. Her teams
moved up a division for state competition and placed second
the last two years.
Nina Strausser, a 1977 graduate of ESSC, is assisting
Coach Hutchinson on a part-time basis.
