COACH
RODRICK CLARK BOLER, Associate
Professor of Health, Physical Education and Athletics and Head Baseball
Coach since the 1968-69 school year,
is a native of Northport, Alabama
and received his BS, MA and AA
Certificate (1976) from the University
of Alabama. Boler was a member of
the 1964 "Barna'" Notional Championship Football Team. He served
the baseball team for three years as
a short relief pitcher. His most notable appearance was
when he pitched 5-1 /3 scoreless innings of relief in a 1-0
victory over Mississippi University.
Cooch Boler coached three years at Gadsden High
School, Alabama and three years at Tuscaloosa County
High School, Northport, Alabama. At Gadsden, Boler
was head baseball coach, assistant basketball coach (two
years), and assistant football coach. He also served as a
player-coach for a semi-professional basketball team
for two years which posted a record of 68 wins and 15
losses. Boler never had a losing season in his five years
of coaching basketball. His football team went 22-8 when
he served as an assistant for Gadsden High.
Boler's baseball team at Gadsden won the Northeast
Alabama Conference Title in 1967 and 1968 and also won
the Etowah County Championship in 1968. In the past
eight years, his BSC teams have won 58, lost 95 and tied
one, following a disastrous 1976 season.
After serving the football program at BSC for eight
years, as defensive coordinator for six years, and offensive
coordinator for two years, Boler assumed the head cross
country coaching position also for the fall of 1976. In
addition to these duties a fall baseball program has been
operated by Boler for seven years in the late afternoon
with good success. He has also been a qualified PIAA
basketball official for the past seven years and has hopes
of refereeing at the college level.
He and his family reside at 510 E. Fourth Street, Bloomsburg, Pa. His office phone is 717-389-3225; and home
phone, 717-784-6044.
ASSISTANTS
RICK ROGERS graduated from Hazleton High School
where he ployed for three years on both varsity baseball
and basketball teams. He was the league All-Star shortstop and also started on the Pennsylvania Senior Babe
Ruth State Championship All-Star team in 1973.
He ployed on the Bloomsburg State College baseball
team for three years and was also a student-equipment
manager at Nelson Field House for 3 years.
Rick will graduate in May of 1977 with a degree
Business Administration.
in
BOB DeCAROLIS attended Cardinal Dougherty High
School (Philadelphia) where he was picked as an AllCatholic 2nd baseman and also is a recent December
graduate from BSC, earning a B.S. in Business Education.
He played football and baseball for the Huskies in 1974
and 1975. During the 1975 baseball season, Bob was tricaptain and was selected 2nd team AII-P.S.C.A.C. as a
left-fielder. Bob was also the team leader in hits (22), hit
by pitches (4), on base average (.523), and co-leader in
homeruns (1), stolen bases (4) and runs batted in (11 ).
The 1975 players voted him the team ·s clutch player
award.
During Bob's two year career at BSC he had a .348
batting average, .919 fielding average and a .427 slugging average. Also he was President of his fraternity,
Delta Omega Chi, and also Vice-President of the Community Government Association.
OUTLOOK
The 1977 Bloomsburg State College Baseball team has
19 varsity and 5 jayvee players returning with bright prospects of a good season in a strong Pennsylvania Conference. The Huskies play in the Eastern division of the Conference. Co-captains for the 1977 team are Bob Stackhouse
and Bob Gibson.
Bill Pennesi, the Huskies· fine leftfielder, was the only
All-Eastern Division player selected from the 1976 squad.
Pennesi hit .328 for the Huskies and was nominated for
several district teams.
1977 team members are seniors Mike Broda, P-OF; Bob
Crimian, P; Craig Mensinger, 2B; Pat Prediger, 2B-SS; David
Scanlon, SS; Stackhouse, 3B; Joe Turri, P; and Richard
White, P. Juniors are Brent Bankus, P-OF; Charles DeRenzis, IF; Rick Duffy, IF; Tom Fulton, CF; Gibson, P; Ed Hess,
P-OF; Gerald Jakubos, OF-1 B; Jim Perry, P; Scott Vercoe,
1B; Bruce Wilson, P. Sophomores are Richard Budweg, P;
Scott Cox, C-OF; Dan Gordon, OF; Tim Long, 2B; Don
O'Conner, SS-P; Pennesi, LF. Leading freshmen, selected
by fall statistics, are Jeff Long, 1B; Bob Young, OF; Ray
Sheetz, 2B; Ken Miller, 3B; Scott Espe and Jack Behan,
OF; catchers Bob Graham and David Zinkler, Jim Quinn
and Paul Gadzicki; pitchers Scott Richards, Kevin Moyer,
Bill Delius and Carl Franklin.
Pitching was probably the best overall defensive effort
during 1976 as many contests were decided by very low
scores. BSC lost nine games by one run. Gibson was
rated 8th in the nation in NCAA Division II strikeouts with
a 10.9 average. He should have another fine year for the
Huskies.
Coach Boler is looking for overall improvement in the
offense to overcome one run deficits this year and overall
defense-pitching and fielding (the Huskies averaged 2.5
errors per game during the 1976 season). The Huskies had
one 300 + hitter in Pennesi, a freshman.
The 1976 September scrimmages proved to be a signicant improvement for Coach Boler and his assistants as
several newcomers look very helpful for the team in the
near future. The Huskies won two and lost two during the
fall scrimmages as rain played havoc on most of the
scheduled scrimmages.
For the first time, the Huskies made a Southern scrimmage tour to the deep South (St. Petersburg, Fla .) to get
ready for the 1977 season. Coach Boler hopes this experience that the team gets from the trip provides the necessary ingredient for a very successful spring .
1976 leaders were 2nd team AII-PSCAC Eastern Division
outfielder, Pennesi, who led the team in batting (.328),
most triples (3), total bases (28), and tied Vercoe for the
most doubles (3). Vercoe led the team in homeruns (3),
runs scored (9), slugging average (.519) and tied for the
most doubles (3) and runs batted in with Al Sprandel (9).
He also tied for the least number of strikeouts per at bat
(1 for every 8.66 at bats). Prediger had the most at-bats
(74), games played (23), and most hits (22). Tom Fulton
registered the most putouts (99) and most strikeouts (16) as
DeRenzis had the most assists (36), sacrifices (5), base on
balls (13) and on-base-average (.560). Mensinger stole six
bases in 7 attempts and was hit twice by a pitch to lead
in that category. Duffy had the least errors per chance
(0 errors for 20 chances).
Leading the pitching department is Gibson, who was
ranked 8th in the NC,A;A Division II strikeouts (10.9 average), led the team in most innings pitched (37-1 / 3), strikeouts (45), and tied teammate Budweg for the most appearances (7). ~udweg had the best ERA (1.20) and gave
up the least hits and runs per inning pitched . Crimian
gave up the least base on balls (12) while Gibson and
Wilson won one game apiece to lead in the most wins.
Despite a 2-23 record, 9 one run losses, a .224 team
batting average and a record 80 errors, the team managed a .924 fielding average and turned a record 22
double plays.

COACH
DR. MICHAEL HERBERT took over the
coaching duties of the Husky golfers
two years ago and posted a 2-B
record. Last year the Huskies recorded eight wins and two losses for the
best record of the Maroon and Gold
stickmen since 1968.
Herbert has had a number of
coaching assignments in his 14 years
at BSC having been at the helm of
tennis and cross country teams and,
along with being an assistant in the basketball program
for 12 years, he has served as freshman basketball coach
for the past two seasons.
A native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, Herbert received
his degrees from the University of Maryland and Lehigh
University. He is a teaching professor in the Department
of Biology. His office phone is 717-389-2406; home phone
is 717-784-8477.

OUTLOOK
In his second season last year, Coach Michael Herbert
turned the Husky golf program completely around and
posted the best record (8-2) since 1968 when BSC had its
last winning season under Jerry Thomas.
Although the 1977 golf team will have some quality
players, the outlook isn't as bright as far as equalling last
year's record. "We will be stronger and more capable of
scoring better as a team, but we have also upgraded our
schedule-it should be an interesting season," Dr. Herbert
states.
Mark Pringle, a junior from Williamsport, and Allen
Ruffner, a sophomore from Reading, were the two best
performers last season averaging 81 and 82 per round
respectively. Both are expected to show improvement after
concentrating on their swings during the summer and fall
months and should again lead the team in scoring.
Freshmen being counted on to make a significant contribution to the Husky golf program are Stan Kozuch,
Panther Valley High School, and David Cichan, Upper
Moreland High School.
New additions to the schedule this year are Lebanon
Valley College and Susquehanna and Scranton Universities.
Frosty Valley Country Club will again be the home
course of the Bloomsburg State golf team.

OUTLOOK
Lacrosse began as an intramural program at Bloomsburg State College in the spring of 1975 through the
interest of a few women students.
In 1976 the team played on a club basis, and the only
interscholastic scrimmage was played with Bucknell University. Twenty girls were active in skill drills and intersquad scrimmages with fourteen players emerging to
form the nucleus for this first year of varsity competition.
As the interest in the sport is growing, approximately
twenty freshmen have joined the above performers. Most
of these newcomers have had high school varsity experience. In our first season, we hope to develop skills and
teamwork. The Huskiette stickwomen will be a young
team but hope to be competitive.

MS. SUSAN HIBBS will handle the
head coaching duties for BSC's first
softball team. Joining the Physical
Education Department in 1975, Hibbs
had served as interim head coach of
the women's basketball team and is
currently assistant coach of that
team.
Ms. Hibbs has a number of years
experience in teaching, playing, and
coaching a variety of sports. She is
J
particularly a logical choice to serve at the helm of this
new sport as she coached and played on many championship softball teams in the New England and MidAtlantic states.
A native of Kentucky, Hibbs earned her Bachelor of

OUTLOOK
The advent of spring heralds the start of the first varsity softball team for women on the BSC campus.
In their initial year, the Huskiettes will face a fourgame schedule. Opponents include the University of
Scranton, Luzerne County Community College on BSC's
home turf, and journeys to Bucknell University and Kutztown State College. The most seasoned of these foes appears to be Bucknell University, which traveled to Bloomsburg in March of 1976 to scrimmage an informal team of
Bloomsburg coeds. The Bison team dominated the play
throughout the contest winning 16-6.
Since women's fast pitch softball has undergone a decided growth recently, the balance of scheduled opponents are comparatively young teams in experience. These
games should prove to be highly contested matches.
Many of the aspiring Maroon and Gold candidates are
well equipped with the skill and knowledge of the sport,
garnered from summer league, intramural and interscholastic experience.

TENNIS
COACH
Head Coach since 1969, BURTON
REESE continues to have outstanding
success with the tennis program at
BSC.
A native of Taylor, Pa., he earned
both his Bachelor of Science and
Master of Education degrees at East
Stroudsburg State College where he
co-captained the tennis and basketball teams. While working on his
master's degree, he helped coach
basketball and tennis as a graduate assistant. He then
joined the faculty of Old Forge High School becoming
an assistant coach in both basketball and football. He
served as athletic director at Abington Heights High
School where he initiated and coached varsity tennis to
a 45-6 record along with being in charge of junior high
b,asketball. Since coming to Bloomsburg, his teams have
compiled a dual match record of 75-37. He has also been
a fine assistant basketball coach at the college for the
past nine years.
Reese, who is a teaching professional in the summer,
is very active in the Middle States Lawn Tennis Association both as a player and official. Currently, he is a director of the Central Pennsylvania Tennis Association and
also helps run the Middle States lnterdistricts held at BSC.
As a player, he has been ranked in the top ten of Middle
States for several years and, along with Fred Straus, has
been ranked one, two, and currently number three in
doubles.
OUTLOOK
The 1977 edition of the Husky tennis team can be summed up very briefly-young but experienced. There are
four freshmen and two juniors in the "top six" making
this the youngest team in many years at BSC. But in terms
of experience, many of these players are seasoned veterans. Most of them are ranked players in the Middle
States or Central Pennsylvania and have several summers
of tournament play behind them.
Included in the top six, listed with their class, hometown, and overall BSC record, are: #1 Jim Hollister,
junior, Bloomsburg (49-15); #2 Rob Vance, freshman,
Phoenixville (l 0-2); # 3 Nate Levine, freshman, State College (8-1); #4 Rick Willders, freshman, New Holland (53); #5 Mark Raynes, freshman, Palmyra (3-6); and #6
Bill Lance, junior, Harrisburg (0-1 ).
Hopefully they will be able to replace some of the
greatest players in the history of the school. Drew Hos-
tetter, Phil Christman, Bob Rosics, and Jim Overbaugh
have all graduated, but the outstanding 19-4 record that
they compiled last year will be difficult to match.
This past fall the team was 5-0 in dual matches with
wins over Lehigh, Mansfield, Bucknell, Scranton, and West
Chester. The BSC netmen finished sixth in the ECAC tourney and fourth in the Bloomsburg Invitational.
The spring prom ises to be very challenging with many
outstanding teams dotting the schedule. A southern trip
begins the schedule with Navy, Virginia Military Institute,
and Richmond, three good Division I schools featured in
the five-match trip. Other Division I schools the squad will
compete against are the strong Nittany Lions of Penn
State, defending East Coast Conference champion Temple,
West Chester and Lehigh. Swarthmore, third in the nation
in Division 111, has been added while Pennsylvania Conference champion East Stroudsburg will have one of its
normally good teams.
The goals of this year's Husky contingent are to finish
with a 70% dual match winning record and to finish in
the top three in the conference championships. If these
are accomplished, Coach Reese feels the season will be a
success.

The tough schedule of the Husky track and field team
will provide an excellent test for the Huskies to uphold
BSC's winning tradition.
" Youth" is again the keynote of this year 's team with
some outstanding freshmen candidates joining a veteran
squad which includes only four seniors. Anthony Montouth, a junior champion and school record holder in the
triple jump, is among these veterans who helped the
Huskies finish third in last year's Pennsylvania State Conference championships held at BSC's Redman Stadium.
Other fine returnees include senior co-captains Jim
O'Brien and Steve Reckefus who provide the team with
outstanding athletic and academic leadership. The distance contingent is led by Steve Eachus, a premier distance man who recently recorded a seventh place finish
in IC4A cross country championship. Steve has already
broken the college's indoor track records for the mile, two
mile, and three mile events. Additional distance runners
include Mark Bond, Bob Kantner, and freshman Jack McKeever.
The high jump is represented by Mike Keiper, Jeff Carruthers, and Chuck Stathopolous. The spearmen are led
by Stan Kita, school record holder, Todd Kehler, Bill Boger,
Lou Marinangela, and Dan McCallum.
The sprinters should be stronger than ever with Barry
Staton, returning veteran, and new speedsters Jim Mailey,
Jakie Williams, and Mike Locust. Ken Curcio, Brian Loudy,
Jim Nagg, Landis Hinson, and Ed Hauck will provide a
strong hurdle contingent.
The quarter milers, led by Reckefus, include: Pete Henzy, John Bergen, Joe Cosenza, and Bill Maguire, while
O'Brien, Aaron Johnson, Carter White, and Joe Hepp will
participate in the half mile. Montouth, of course, leads
the triple jumpers with the long jump fronted by BSC
record holder Barry Staton. Other point contributors include Larry Dietrich and Carruthers.
The weight events will be adequately represented with
returnees Gary Coldren, McCallum, and Sean MacBain.
Pole vaulters are Fred Koetteritz, Scott Lux, Brian Sullivan,
and freshman Dave Womer.

White, P. Juniors are Brent Bankus, P-OF; Charles DeRenzis, IF; Rick Duffy, IF; Tom Fulton, CF; Gibson, P; Ed Hess,
P-OF; Gerald Jakubos, OF-1 B; Jim Perry, P; Scott Vercoe,
1B; Bruce Wilson, P. Sophomores are Richard Budweg, P;

Education Department in 1975, Hibbs
had served as interim head coach of
the women's basketball team and is
currently assistant coach of that
team.
Ms. Hibbs has a number of years
experience in teaching, playing, and

particularly a logical choice to serve at the helm of this
new sport as she coached and played on many championship softball teams in the New England and MidAtlantic states.
