THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
The first presidential medallion was presented
to former President Foster F. Diebold during the
May, 1981 commencement ceremonies. Designed
and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the
sterling silver medallion consists of a three and
one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face
the figure of a Gordon Highlander with pipes. To
the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To
the left is the Cross of England. Flanking the figure
is the date 1857, the opening year of the University,
and garland thistles. In the background are the
hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open
book, a symbol of knowledge. On the reverse side
is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.
shields, alternately bearing three different designs:
the meigle, an interlacing knotwork peculiar to the
Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design;
and "ESC" in interlocking letters on a background
of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar
shields is a Cross of St. George, representing the
union of Scotland and England. The entire
medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire
perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold
crafted circle which reads "Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania." Professor Katzwinkel, now retired,
added this piece to the medallion especially for the
Inauguration of President Frank G. Pogue in 1997,
and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion
representing the school's current status as a
University.
The pendant descends from a shield
containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the
medallion is comprised of a series of two-inch
ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing
the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval
universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries,
where dress was the outward sign of privilege and
responsibility. The academic dress worn by those
participating in today's academic processional
symbolizes the level of their academic attainment
and the institution they attended.
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline
in which the doctorate was obtained.
HOOD
The most outstanding feature of the academic
dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
master's and the doctor's degrees. The doctor's
hood is longer than the master's hood and has
distinguished panels. The college or the university
granting the degree is indicated by the color of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates
the field in which the degree was granted.
GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black,
certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The bachelor's and master's gowns
are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
bachelor's gown is designed to be worn closed and
features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The
master's gown is designed to be worn open or
closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends,
and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms
protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for
the doctor's degree is made of wool, serge, or silk
with an open front faced with wide velvet panels.
The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually
the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
baccalaureate and master's degree and is worn
over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for
the doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of
the cap until the moment the degree is conferred
by the president.

PRESIDENT FRANK G. POGUE
Frank G. Pogue was appointed the 15th president
of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on July 1,1996.
A sociologist. Dr. Pogue holds a bachelor's degree
from Alabama State University, a master's degree from
Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from the University of
Pittsburgh.
His decade of service at Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania is marked by unprecedented growth
and advancement in academic programs, graduate
enrollment, campus facilities, and fund raising.
Ushered by a nationally-recognized strategic planning
process, academic programs have expanded to include
broadcast and print journalism, forensic chemistry,
forensic accounting, women's studies, character
education, and management information systems
among others. At the same time, online programs
have contributed to significant growth in graduate
enrollment. New accreditations have been achieved in
Education, Business, and Social Work, and
accreditation efforts are under way for the University's
programs in Art, Theatre, Business and Journalism.
The University was re-accredited with commendation
for ten years by the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools in 2003. Under Dr. Pogue's
direction, the campus has undergone a physical
transformation that is unparalleled in the history of
the University. New buildings, renovations, new
campus signage, infrastructure upgrades, and
information technology equipment, networking, and
information system enhancements have ensured that
our students and faculty have access to the facilities
and support systems necessary to enable academic
excellence. The doors to Edinboro University in
Meadville opened in 2005, signifying the University's
permanent presence in Crawford County. Access to
Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center was
enhanced through technological connectivity between
and among the University's Edinboro, Erie, and
Meadville locations. As the Sesquicentennial year
concludes in the spring of 2007, we will successfully
complete the $15 million capital campaign - the
Campaign for Excellence. Dr. Pogue has created the
concept and philosophy of the Edinboro Family, a
learner-centered environment where students come
first and are an integral part of a caring and
supportive campus community.
Dr. Pogue participates in national, regional and
statewide leadership groups. He serves on the
American Council on Education's (ACE) Commission
on Women in Higher Education and is chair of the
American Association of State Colleges and
Universities' (AASCU) Millennium Leadership
Initiative. Regionally, he serves on the advisory
council on affiliated institutions for the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) with
which he has been affiliated for more than 30 years.
His statewide involvement includes the Board of
Directors of Pennsylvania Campus Compact, the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education
(PASSHE) Commission for the Universities and
Commission of Presidents, and the Executive Board of
A Community of Agile Partners in Education (CAPE).
He has served on higher education advisory panels
for Pennsylvania Governors Tom Ridge and Edward
G. Rendell.
Locally, Dr. Pogue serves on the Boards of
Directors for the Meadville Area Industrial
Commission, the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth
Partnership, and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra.
Additionally, he serves on the Boards of Corporators
for the Hamot Health Foundation, the Saint Vincent
Health Center, and the Meadville Medical Center. Dr.
Pogue has provided leadership for a number of
regional fund-raising initiatives, including the Erie
County State Employees Combined Appeal (SECA)
campaign, the Erie Day School's Adopt-A-Scholar
scholarship drive, and the Annual Campaign of the
Greater Erie County Chapter of the American Red
Cross. This year, he is serving as the Community
Campaign Chair for the 2007 United Arts Fund Drive.
Dr. Pogue was honored by the Erie Area Chamber
of Commerce with the Louis J. Tullio Community
Service Award. The Greater Erie Community Action
Committee (GECAC) honored him in 2006 with the R.
Benjamin Wiley Memorial Award, "Spirit of GECAC";
the Othello Myers Johnson Human Services Award
(2004); and with the Paul P. Martin Community
Service Award (2000). In 1999, the Distinguished
Service Award for Leadership and Vision was
presented to him by the SUNY at Albany Council of
Trustees.
Prior to his presidency at Edinboro University, Dr.
Pogue was the vice chancellor for student affairs and
special programs at the State University of New York
(SUNY) Central Administration in Albany. While vice
chancellor, he also served for one year as interim
president at the SUNY College at Cobleskill.

GRAND MARSHAL
Leading the academic procession and
representing his faculty colleagues by carrying the
Ceremonial Mace at today's Commencement is Dr.
Baher Ghosheh of the Geosciences Department at
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
A professor of Cultural Geography,
International Trade, the Middle East and Japan,
Professor Ghosheh's distinction as Mace Bearer for
the Winter Commencement is symbolic of the
central role which faculty play in the academic and
personal development of Edinboro's students.
He taught classes in English conversation and
comparative development while studying Chinese
(Mandarin) and conducting research on Chinese
economic development and culture.
Dr. Max Azicri, Political Science and Criminal Justice Department
While on leave from Edinboro during the
1996-1997 academic year, he taught at Miyazaki
International College in Japan, offering courses in
comparative economic development and
international business, as well as regional courses
focusing on the Middle East and Japan.
Dr. Kathleen Dailey, Elementary Education Department
Like many in his field. Dr. Ghosheh has
traveled extensively for vocational and avocational
interests alike, visiting 49 countries and 41 states.
Professor Ghosheh, a native of Jerusalem,
began his post-secondary studies in the United
States at the University of Mississippi. After
several years in the South, he moved north to the
State University of New York at Buffalo, where he
earned four degrees, including a Doctor of
Philosophy in Geography and Comparative
Economic Development; a Master of Arts in
Geography, with a concentration in Economic and
Cultural Geography; a Master of Arts in Political
Science, with a concentration in International
Relations and Middle Eastern Studies; and a
Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He also
earned a Graduate Certificate in International
Trade.
A prolific author, his book, "A New
International Economic Role for the Arab World:
Lessons from the Japanese Experience," was
received with acclaim, as were his textbook articles
for the Geography Armual Editions, and "FOCUS,"
the magazine of the American Geographic Society.
Dr. Ghosheh is often the public face of
Edinboro University, serving as a media expert
through scores of print and electronic media
consultations with his succinct commentary about
comparative politics and cultures, the Gulf Wars
and the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
His educational philosophy demonstrates a
visceral imderstanding that students have different
learning styles. "I try to use various techniques and
methods to reach students, always attempting to
make learning fun, relevant and current, while
doing my best to get my students actively involved
in the learning process," he explained.
Active in civic and community organizations,
he typifies the dedication, commitment and
involvement of Edinboro University's faculty to
educational excellence and service to students.
That's why his selection as our Winter
Commencement's Mace Bearer and Grand Marshal
honors not only Professor Baher Ghosheh, but
Edinboro's entire faculty.
Dr. Ghosheh's professional career at Edinboro
is highlighted not only by his teaching, research
and commitment to educational excellence, but by
numerous awards and honors as well. In 1999, he
secured a coveted Fulbright Award, sending him to
Singapore and Malaysia. That same year, he was
named Pennsylvania Geographer of the Year.
Named to "Who's Who Among International
Scholars in North America" in 1992, Professor
Ghosheh was nominated for the Joseph Katz
Distinguished Professor Award the same year.

THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
The first presidential medallion was presented
to former President Foster F. Diebold during the
May, 1981 commencement ceremonies. Designed
and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the
sterling silver medallion consists of a three and
one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face
the figure of a Gordon Highlander with pipes. To
the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To
the left is the Cross of England. Flanking the figure
is the date 1857, the opening year of the University,
and garland thistles. In the background are the
hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open
book, a symbol of knowledge. On the reverse side
is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.
shields, alternately bearing three different designs:
the meigle, an interlacing knotwork peculiar to the
Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design;
and "ESC" in interlocking letters on a background
of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar
shields is a Cross of St. George, representing the
union of Scotland and England. The entire
medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire
perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold
crafted circle which reads "Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania." Professor Katzwinkel, now retired,
added this piece to the medallion especially for the
Inauguration of President Frank G. Pogue in 1997,
and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion
representing the school's current status as a
University.
The pendant descends from a shield
containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the
medallion is comprised of a series of two-inch
ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing
the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval
universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries,
where dress was the outward sign of privilege and
responsibility. The academic dress worn by those
participating in today's academic processional
symbolizes the level of their academic attainment
and the institution they attended.
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline
in which the doctorate was obtained.
HOOD
The most outstanding feature of the academic
dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
master's and the doctor's degrees. The doctor's
hood is longer than the master's hood and has
distinguished panels. The college or the university
granting the degree is indicated by the color of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates
the field in which the degree was granted.
GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black,
certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The bachelor's and master's gowns
are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
bachelor's gown is designed to be worn closed and
features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The
master's gown is designed to be worn open or
closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends,
and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms
protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for
the doctor's degree is made of wool, serge, or silk
with an open front faced with wide velvet panels.
The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually
the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
baccalaureate and master's degree and is worn
over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for
the doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of
the cap until the moment the degree is conferred
by the president.

PRESIDENT FRANK G. POGUE
Frank G. Pogue was appointed the 15th president
of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on July 1,1996.
A sociologist. Dr. Pogue holds a bachelor's degree
from Alabama State University, a master's degree from
Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from the University of
Pittsburgh.
His decade of service at Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania is marked by unprecedented growth
and advancement in academic programs, graduate
enrollment, campus facilities, and fund raising.
Ushered by a nationally-recognized strategic planning
process, academic programs have expanded to include
broadcast and print journalism, forensic chemistry,
forensic accounting, women's studies, character
education, and management information systems
among others. At the same time, online programs
have contributed to significant growth in graduate
enrollment. New accreditations have been achieved in
Education, Business, and Social Work, and
accreditation efforts are under way for the University's
programs in Art, Theatre, Business and Journalism.
The University was re-accredited with commendation
for ten years by the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools in 2003. Under Dr. Pogue's
direction, the campus has undergone a physical
transformation that is unparalleled in the history of
the University. New buildings, renovations, new
campus signage, infrastructure upgrades, and
information technology equipment, networking, and
information system enhancements have ensured that
our students and faculty have access to the facilities
and support systems necessary to enable academic
excellence. The doors to Edinboro University in
Meadville opened in 2005, signifying the University's
permanent presence in Crawford County. Access to
Edinboro University in Erie - The Porreco Center was
enhanced through technological connectivity between
and among the University's Edinboro, Erie, and
Meadville locations. As the Sesquicentennial year
concludes in the spring of 2007, we will successfully
complete the $15 million capital campaign - the
Campaign for Excellence. Dr. Pogue has created the
concept and philosophy of the Edinboro Family, a
learner-centered environment where students come
first and are an integral part of a caring and
supportive campus community.
Dr. Pogue participates in national, regional and
statewide leadership groups. He serves on the
American Council on Education's (ACE) Commission
on Women in Higher Education and is chair of the
American Association of State Colleges and
Universities' (AASCU) Millennium Leadership
Initiative. Regionally, he serves on the advisory
council on affiliated institutions for the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) with
which he has been affiliated for more than 30 years.
His statewide involvement includes the Board of
Directors of Pennsylvania Campus Compact, the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education
(PASSHE) Commission for the Universities and
Commission of Presidents, and the Executive Board of
A Community of Agile Partners in Education (CAPE).
He has served on higher education advisory panels
for Pennsylvania Governors Tom Ridge and Edward
G. Rendell.
Locally, Dr. Pogue serves on the Boards of
Directors for the Meadville Area Industrial
Commission, the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth
Partnership, and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra.
Additionally, he serves on the Boards of Corporators
for the Hamot Health Foundation, the Saint Vincent
Health Center, and the Meadville Medical Center. Dr.
Pogue has provided leadership for a number of
regional fund-raising initiatives, including the Erie
County State Employees Combined Appeal (SECA)
campaign, the Erie Day School's Adopt-A-Scholar
scholarship drive, and the Annual Campaign of the
Greater Erie County Chapter of the American Red
Cross. This year, he is serving as the Community
Campaign Chair for the 2007 United Arts Fund Drive.
Dr. Pogue was honored by the Erie Area Chamber
of Commerce with the Louis J. Tullio Community
Service Award. The Greater Erie Community Action
Committee (GECAC) honored him in 2006 with the R.
Benjamin Wiley Memorial Award, "Spirit of GECAC";
the Othello Myers Johnson Human Services Award
(2004); and with the Paul P. Martin Community
Service Award (2000). In 1999, the Distinguished
Service Award for Leadership and Vision was
presented to him by the SUNY at Albany Council of
Trustees.
Prior to his presidency at Edinboro University, Dr.
Pogue was the vice chancellor for student affairs and
special programs at the State University of New York
(SUNY) Central Administration in Albany. While vice
chancellor, he also served for one year as interim
president at the SUNY College at Cobleskill.

GRAND MARSHAL
Leading the academic procession and
representing his faculty colleagues by carrying the
Ceremonial Mace at today's Commencement is Dr.
Baher Ghosheh of the Geosciences Department at
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
A professor of Cultural Geography,
International Trade, the Middle East and Japan,
Professor Ghosheh's distinction as Mace Bearer for
the Winter Commencement is symbolic of the
central role which faculty play in the academic and
personal development of Edinboro's students.
He taught classes in English conversation and
comparative development while studying Chinese
(Mandarin) and conducting research on Chinese
economic development and culture.
Dr. Max Azicri, Political Science and Criminal Justice Department
While on leave from Edinboro during the
1996-1997 academic year, he taught at Miyazaki
International College in Japan, offering courses in
comparative economic development and
international business, as well as regional courses
focusing on the Middle East and Japan.
Dr. Kathleen Dailey, Elementary Education Department
Like many in his field. Dr. Ghosheh has
traveled extensively for vocational and avocational
interests alike, visiting 49 countries and 41 states.
Professor Ghosheh, a native of Jerusalem,
began his post-secondary studies in the United
States at the University of Mississippi. After
several years in the South, he moved north to the
State University of New York at Buffalo, where he
earned four degrees, including a Doctor of
Philosophy in Geography and Comparative
Economic Development; a Master of Arts in
Geography, with a concentration in Economic and
Cultural Geography; a Master of Arts in Political
Science, with a concentration in International
Relations and Middle Eastern Studies; and a
Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He also
earned a Graduate Certificate in International
Trade.
A prolific author, his book, "A New
International Economic Role for the Arab World:
Lessons from the Japanese Experience," was
received with acclaim, as were his textbook articles
for the Geography Armual Editions, and "FOCUS,"
the magazine of the American Geographic Society.
Dr. Ghosheh is often the public face of
Edinboro University, serving as a media expert
through scores of print and electronic media
consultations with his succinct commentary about
comparative politics and cultures, the Gulf Wars
and the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
His educational philosophy demonstrates a
visceral imderstanding that students have different
learning styles. "I try to use various techniques and
methods to reach students, always attempting to
make learning fun, relevant and current, while
doing my best to get my students actively involved
in the learning process," he explained.
Active in civic and community organizations,
he typifies the dedication, commitment and
involvement of Edinboro University's faculty to
educational excellence and service to students.
That's why his selection as our Winter
Commencement's Mace Bearer and Grand Marshal
honors not only Professor Baher Ghosheh, but
Edinboro's entire faculty.
Dr. Ghosheh's professional career at Edinboro
is highlighted not only by his teaching, research
and commitment to educational excellence, but by
numerous awards and honors as well. In 1999, he
secured a coveted Fulbright Award, sending him to
Singapore and Malaysia. That same year, he was
named Pennsylvania Geographer of the Year.
Named to "Who's Who Among International
Scholars in North America" in 1992, Professor
Ghosheh was nominated for the Joseph Katz
Distinguished Professor Award the same year.
