THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
shields, alternately bearing three different designs:
the meigle, an interlacing knotwork peculiar to the
Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design;
and "ESC" in interlocking letters on a background
of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar
shields is a Cross of St. George, representing the
union of Scotland and England. The entire
medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire
perdue (lost wax) process.
The first presidential medallion was presented
to former President Foster F. Diebold during the
May, 1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed
and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the
sterling silver medallion consists of a three and
one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face
the figure of a Gordon Highlander with pipes. To
the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To
the left is the Cross of England. Flanking the figure
is the date 1857, the opening year of the University,
and garland thistles. In the background are the
hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open
book, a symbol of knowledge. On the reverse side
is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold
crafted circle which reads "Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania." Professor Katzwinkel, now retired,
added this piece to the medallion especially for the
Inauguration of President Frank G. Pogue in 1997,
and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion
representing the schooTs current status as a
University.
The pendant descends from a shield
containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the
medallion is comprised of a series of two-inch

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline
in which the doctorate was obtained.
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing
the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval
universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries,
where dress was the outward sign of privilege and
responsibility. The academic dress worn by those
participating in today's academic processional
symbolizes the level of their academic attainment
and the institution they attended.
HOOD
The most outstanding feature of the academic
dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
master's and the doctor's degrees. The doctor's
hood is longer than the master's hood and has
distinguished panels. The college or the university
granting the degree is indicated by the color of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates
the field in which the degree was granted.
GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black,
certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The bachelor's and master's gowns
are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
bachelor's gown is designed to be worn closed and
features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The
master's gown is designed to be worn open or
closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends,
and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms
protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for
the doctor's degree is made of wool, serge, or silk
with an open front faced with wide velvet panels.
The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually
the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
baccalaureate and master's degree and is worn
over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for
the doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of
the cap until the moment the degree is conferred
by the president.

PRESIDENT JEREMY D. BROWN
GRAND MARSHAL
Dr. Jeremy D. Brown became the 16th
president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
on July 1, 2007. Since his inauguration. President
Brown established new pathways to academic
excellence while leading the university in
continued physical growth of the Edinboro
campus. He has also traveled abroad to China,
Korea, Panama, and Poland to renew or establish
new articulation and collaboration agreements
with higher education institutions. In the coming
months and years, he will continue to take
Edinboro to the world and bring the world to
Edinboro.
Following his stint at Indiana, Dr. Brown
accepted a faculty position in the Physics
Department of Princeton University, where in
addition to continuing his research, he taught
undergraduate and graduate-level physics courses.
Transitioning into academic administration. Dr.
Brown was named associate dean of the Graduate
School at Yale University. Later, he returned to
Princeton as associate dean of the faculty. In 2000,
Dr. Brown was named rector of Florida State
University-Panama, serving as the chief executive
officer of a small U.S. university operating in Latin
America.
Since Dr. Brown assumed Edinboro's
presidency, graduate studies program enrollment
increased significantly along with the university's
distance and online learning offerings. His short
tenure also includes oversight of more than $150
million in new, ongoing and future construction
projects.
During his career. Dr. Brown published many
scholarly articles and has been an invited speaker at
international conferences, research institutions and
universities. He served as a visiting scientist at the
University of Stellenbosch, the University of
Manitoba, the Department of Nuclear Physics at
Oxford University and the National Accelerator
Centre in Cape Town.
A renewed "Fighting Scots" school spirit
accompanies the Brown presidency, which
emphasizes Edinboro's Scottish heritage with
events such as Tartan Day, the Purple Thistle
Award to recognize outstanding faculty and staff,
and a fresh marketing campaign directed at
audiences in the traditional recruiting area as well
as beyond the boundaries of northwestern
Pennsylvania.
The President's community service includes
membership on Board of Corporators of the Hamot
Health Foundation, the Board of Trustees for the
Saint Vincent Health Center and System, and the
Erie Philharmonic Orchestra's Board of Directors
and chairmanship of the Board's education
committee.
Dr. Brown and his wife, Rebeca, became the
proud parents of Andrew Jeremy Brown within the
past year. When not traveling for the university or
engaged in myriad presidential duties. Dr. Brown
likes to play squash. Weather permitting. Dr.
Brown also enjoys sailing or skiing, and
particularly takes delight in spending time with his
sons Lucas, Gabriel, and now, Andrew Jeremy, or
visiting his family in England and Panama.
In athletics and recreation, this spring Dr.
Brown added another varsity sport, women's
lacrosse, to Edinboro's lineup, and will soon
dedicate the new Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and
Recreation Center, the region's largest free
standing domed facility.
Dr. Brown came to Edinboro from SUNYCanton where he served as provost and vice
president for academic affairs since 2003. As the
2,600-student university's chief academic officer, he
steered campus-wide strategic planning, oversaw
vigorous growth in distance learning opportunities
and cultivated many international collaborations.
Having taken
film courses while
on sabbatical at
Oxford University,
Dr.
Brown
thoroughly enjoys
unwinding
by
watching movies.
He is also an avid
fan of England's
Manchester
United
soccer
team.
A native of Manchester, England, he earned
both a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. in physics
from the University of Birmingham, England. His
doctoral work in experimental nuclear physics was
conducted at the University of Birmingham.
Immediately following the completion of his Ph.D.
requirements. Dr. Brown spent two years at
Indiana University doing nuclear physics research.
4
Dr. White is also employed at Saint Vincent
Health Center's Emergency Department where
his responsibilities include providing direct care
for a wide variety of critical and non-critical
patients, and serving as a charge nurse and
trauma nurse leader.
Leading the academic procession and
representing his faculty colleagues by carrying
the ceremonial mace at today's Commencement
is Dr. Thomas White of Edinboro University's
Nursing Department.
As an Assistant Professor of Nursing and
President of the University Senate, Dr. White's
distinction as Mace Bearer for the Spring
Commencement is symbolic of the central role
which faculty play in the academic and personal
development of Edinboro's students.
His educational philosophy demonstrates a
visceral understanding of the importance of
providing complete health care education to
students enrolled in one of Edinboro's most
sought-after programs. In fact, that philosophy
engenders a belief he conveys to students that
education has no culmination. "Education is a
lifelong journey," he tells his students. "My
education truly began when I graduated from
college!"
Dr. White, a native of nearby Venango and
graduate of Cambridge Springs High School,
began his post-secondary academic career in
New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he earned a
diploma in Professional Nursing from the
Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
From there, it was off to Edinboro University and
a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1994,
followed by a Master of Science degree in nursing
in 1999.
An avid traveler. Dr. White is particularly
fond of his trips to Italy and to Hawaii.
Dr. White's background as an undergraduate
and graduate student at Edinboro served to
enhance and highlight a professional career here
that has benefited his students and his colleagues.
Like many in his field, he is respected University
wide as well as in the local health care delivery
system in the region beyond Edinboro.
By 2000, he had earned an additional 10 post
masters credits from Edinboro, and in 2006 he
was awarded the Doctor of Education in
Administrative and Leadership Studies degree
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
As President of the University Senate, one of
Dr. White's tasks is to bring all segments of the
Edinboro community together to participate in
dealing with challenges facing higher education
in general and at Edinboro University in
particular.
His professional certifications are many and
include Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac
Life Support, Certified Emergency Nursing, Basic
Life Support Instructor and National BoardCertified Family Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. White typifies the dedication and
commitment of Edinboro University's faculty to
educational
excellence and
service to stu
dents.
That's
why his selection
as our Spring
Commencement
Mace Bearer and
Grand Marshal
honors not only
Dr. White, but
also Edinboro's
entire faculty.
Dr. White has made many professional
presentations at the state and national levels, and
his licensure by the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania and by the Drug Enforcement
Agency includes Registered Nurse and Family
Nurse Practitioner.
He began teaching at Edinboro University in
1995. His current assistant professorship
responsibilities include providing clinical
instruction for sophomore, junior, senior and
graduate (nurse practitioner) students; classroom
instruction in the area of medical/surgical
nursing,
pediatrics,
pharmacology,
and
community health for undergraduate nursing
students; and classroom instruction in assessment
and diagnosis for graduate family nurse
practitioner students.

EDUCATOR, ADVISOR, RESEARCHER
& STAFF OF THE YEAR
Dr. BARER GHOSHEH, of the Geosciences
Department, is the 2009 Educator of the Year.
This award is presented annually to a faculty
member who demonstrates excellence in
teaching.
presented each year to an Edinboro faculty
member who stands out as an excellent academic
counselor and who enables students to achieve
their academic, personal and professional goals.
According to those faculty members and
students who nominated Dr. Ghosheh, he clearly
reaches the heights of teaching excellence in all he
does at Edinboro University.
In his letter of nomination. Dr. Kerry Moyer,
Chair of the Geosciences Department, wrote,
^'Peers and students alike consistently remark
upon the energy and vitality that Baher brings
into the classroom as well as his ability to get
students involved in the active learning process. I
believe it is that attitude and way of thinking that
sets Baher apart from many other educators."
In a letter of nomination for this award. Dr.
Kiran Misra wrote, "Dr. Sorhannus has published
his research on diversity dynamics of diatoms in
the January issue of Nature, an extremely
prominent scientific journal with a readership of
over 300,000. In addition, he has extensively
published in many other leading journals."
Dr. Misra's nomination also declared: "Dr.
Sorhannus has brought excellence in scholarship
into the classroom ... he continues to collaborate
with scientists from prestigious institutions such
as Cornell University, Columbia University, The
Smithsonian Institute and the University of
California-Davis, as well as his colleagues here at
Edinboro. The Biology and Health Services
Department strongly endorses Dr. Ulf Sorhannus
for Edinboro University's 2009 Scholar of the
Year Award."
The nomination came with 13 pages of
supporting documents, including lists of Dr.
Sorhannus' many fellowships, grants, research
seminars, teaching seminars, community service,
publications and research articles.
Dr. Moyer went on to say, "Dr. Ghosheh's
reputation for excellence has been recognized by
his peers and he is often sought after to assist in
University-supported initiatives. For example,
Baher has been kind enough to offer sections of
World Geography for the First-Year Experience
initiative and for special groups such as cohorts
supporting the Preschool Education and Greater
Erie Community Action Committee programs. 1
cannot think of a more worthy candidate for the
Edinboro University Educator of the Year Award
than Dr. Baher Ghosheh."
nomination form can do her justice. One would
need to work with her daily, as I have, to fully
appreciate how integral she is to the successful
functioning of our section of the university."
Dr. Jerra Jenrette, Chair of the History and
Anthropology Department, added, "Ms.
Wilkosz's impact on the primary stakeholders is
immeasurable! I cannot imagine how our
students would suffer if she were not the
frontline in our office. Her professionalism serves
as a model for students, other staff members and
faculty."
"Dr. Smith exhibits great intelligence in my
dealings with him and in his teachings," wrote
graduate student Theresa Gilliland. "Despite his
astute level, he remains easy to talk with,
approachable and friendly. He is a great source of
ii^ormation in that he is knowledgeable in terms
of which classes are offered and when, and also
helps guide students to make appropriate choices
in regard to interests and career goals."
A beneficiary of Ms. Wilkosz's work ethic,
student Ashley Grove, wrote, "Ms. Wilkosz is the
heart of the departments. Without her, the
departments would fail to work properly. Her
ability to balance everything that she does with a
smile every day makes everyone else smile."
Another student, Tracey Larson, also had
high praise in her letter nominating Dr. Smith for
the Advisor of the Year Award. "He helped
formulate my plan of study and encouraged me
to also complete the requirements for the Conflict
Management Certificate," she wrote. "As a
student, 1 appreciated his encouragement and
guidance throughout my two years at Edinboro
University."
Larson also added, "He has our best interests
at heart, and really wants us to have a great
academic experience!"
Dr. ULF SORHANNUS, of the Biology and
Health Services Department, is Edinboro
University's 2009 Scholar of the Year. The Scholar
of the Year Award was created as a means of
recogmzing the excellent practices and successes
of Edinboro's august faculty members, not only
to underscore the quality of scholarship at
Edinboro University, but also to encourage
continued best practices among faculty.

THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
shields, alternately bearing three different designs:
the meigle, an interlacing knotwork peculiar to the
Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design;
and "ESC" in interlocking letters on a background
of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar
shields is a Cross of St. George, representing the
union of Scotland and England. The entire
medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire
perdue (lost wax) process.
The first presidential medallion was presented
to former President Foster F. Diebold during the
May, 1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed
and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the
sterling silver medallion consists of a three and
one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face
the figure of a Gordon Highlander with pipes. To
the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To
the left is the Cross of England. Flanking the figure
is the date 1857, the opening year of the University,
and garland thistles. In the background are the
hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open
book, a symbol of knowledge. On the reverse side
is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold
crafted circle which reads "Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania." Professor Katzwinkel, now retired,
added this piece to the medallion especially for the
Inauguration of President Frank G. Pogue in 1997,
and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion
representing the schooTs current status as a
University.
The pendant descends from a shield
containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the
medallion is comprised of a series of two-inch

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline
in which the doctorate was obtained.
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing
the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval
universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries,
where dress was the outward sign of privilege and
responsibility. The academic dress worn by those
participating in today's academic processional
symbolizes the level of their academic attainment
and the institution they attended.
HOOD
The most outstanding feature of the academic
dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
master's and the doctor's degrees. The doctor's
hood is longer than the master's hood and has
distinguished panels. The college or the university
granting the degree is indicated by the color of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates
the field in which the degree was granted.
GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black,
certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The bachelor's and master's gowns
are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
bachelor's gown is designed to be worn closed and
features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The
master's gown is designed to be worn open or
closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends,
and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms
protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for
the doctor's degree is made of wool, serge, or silk
with an open front faced with wide velvet panels.
The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually
the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
baccalaureate and master's degree and is worn
over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for
the doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread.
Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of
the cap until the moment the degree is conferred
by the president.

PRESIDENT JEREMY D. BROWN
GRAND MARSHAL
Dr. Jeremy D. Brown became the 16th
president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
on July 1, 2007. Since his inauguration. President
Brown established new pathways to academic
excellence while leading the university in
continued physical growth of the Edinboro
campus. He has also traveled abroad to China,
Korea, Panama, and Poland to renew or establish
new articulation and collaboration agreements
with higher education institutions. In the coming
months and years, he will continue to take
Edinboro to the world and bring the world to
Edinboro.
Following his stint at Indiana, Dr. Brown
accepted a faculty position in the Physics
Department of Princeton University, where in
addition to continuing his research, he taught
undergraduate and graduate-level physics courses.
Transitioning into academic administration. Dr.
Brown was named associate dean of the Graduate
School at Yale University. Later, he returned to
Princeton as associate dean of the faculty. In 2000,
Dr. Brown was named rector of Florida State
University-Panama, serving as the chief executive
officer of a small U.S. university operating in Latin
America.
Since Dr. Brown assumed Edinboro's
presidency, graduate studies program enrollment
increased significantly along with the university's
distance and online learning offerings. His short
tenure also includes oversight of more than $150
million in new, ongoing and future construction
projects.
During his career. Dr. Brown published many
scholarly articles and has been an invited speaker at
international conferences, research institutions and
universities. He served as a visiting scientist at the
University of Stellenbosch, the University of
Manitoba, the Department of Nuclear Physics at
Oxford University and the National Accelerator
Centre in Cape Town.
A renewed "Fighting Scots" school spirit
accompanies the Brown presidency, which
emphasizes Edinboro's Scottish heritage with
events such as Tartan Day, the Purple Thistle
Award to recognize outstanding faculty and staff,
and a fresh marketing campaign directed at
audiences in the traditional recruiting area as well
as beyond the boundaries of northwestern
Pennsylvania.
The President's community service includes
membership on Board of Corporators of the Hamot
Health Foundation, the Board of Trustees for the
Saint Vincent Health Center and System, and the
Erie Philharmonic Orchestra's Board of Directors
and chairmanship of the Board's education
committee.
Dr. Brown and his wife, Rebeca, became the
proud parents of Andrew Jeremy Brown within the
past year. When not traveling for the university or
engaged in myriad presidential duties. Dr. Brown
likes to play squash. Weather permitting. Dr.
Brown also enjoys sailing or skiing, and
particularly takes delight in spending time with his
sons Lucas, Gabriel, and now, Andrew Jeremy, or
visiting his family in England and Panama.
In athletics and recreation, this spring Dr.
Brown added another varsity sport, women's
lacrosse, to Edinboro's lineup, and will soon
dedicate the new Mike S. Zafirovski Sports and
Recreation Center, the region's largest free
standing domed facility.
Dr. Brown came to Edinboro from SUNYCanton where he served as provost and vice
president for academic affairs since 2003. As the
2,600-student university's chief academic officer, he
steered campus-wide strategic planning, oversaw
vigorous growth in distance learning opportunities
and cultivated many international collaborations.
Having taken
film courses while
on sabbatical at
Oxford University,
Dr.
Brown
thoroughly enjoys
unwinding
by
watching movies.
He is also an avid
fan of England's
Manchester
United
soccer
team.
A native of Manchester, England, he earned
both a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. in physics
from the University of Birmingham, England. His
doctoral work in experimental nuclear physics was
conducted at the University of Birmingham.
Immediately following the completion of his Ph.D.
requirements. Dr. Brown spent two years at
Indiana University doing nuclear physics research.
4
Dr. White is also employed at Saint Vincent
Health Center's Emergency Department where
his responsibilities include providing direct care
for a wide variety of critical and non-critical
patients, and serving as a charge nurse and
trauma nurse leader.
Leading the academic procession and
representing his faculty colleagues by carrying
the ceremonial mace at today's Commencement
is Dr. Thomas White of Edinboro University's
Nursing Department.
As an Assistant Professor of Nursing and
President of the University Senate, Dr. White's
distinction as Mace Bearer for the Spring
Commencement is symbolic of the central role
which faculty play in the academic and personal
development of Edinboro's students.
His educational philosophy demonstrates a
visceral understanding of the importance of
providing complete health care education to
students enrolled in one of Edinboro's most
sought-after programs. In fact, that philosophy
engenders a belief he conveys to students that
education has no culmination. "Education is a
lifelong journey," he tells his students. "My
education truly began when I graduated from
college!"
Dr. White, a native of nearby Venango and
graduate of Cambridge Springs High School,
began his post-secondary academic career in
New Castle, Pennsylvania, where he earned a
diploma in Professional Nursing from the
Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
From there, it was off to Edinboro University and
a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1994,
followed by a Master of Science degree in nursing
in 1999.
An avid traveler. Dr. White is particularly
fond of his trips to Italy and to Hawaii.
Dr. White's background as an undergraduate
and graduate student at Edinboro served to
enhance and highlight a professional career here
that has benefited his students and his colleagues.
Like many in his field, he is respected University
wide as well as in the local health care delivery
system in the region beyond Edinboro.
By 2000, he had earned an additional 10 post
masters credits from Edinboro, and in 2006 he
was awarded the Doctor of Education in
Administrative and Leadership Studies degree
from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
As President of the University Senate, one of
Dr. White's tasks is to bring all segments of the
Edinboro community together to participate in
dealing with challenges facing higher education
in general and at Edinboro University in
particular.
His professional certifications are many and
include Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac
Life Support, Certified Emergency Nursing, Basic
Life Support Instructor and National BoardCertified Family Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. White typifies the dedication and
commitment of Edinboro University's faculty to
educational
excellence and
service to stu
dents.
That's
why his selection
as our Spring
Commencement
Mace Bearer and
Grand Marshal
honors not only
Dr. White, but
also Edinboro's
entire faculty.
Dr. White has made many professional
presentations at the state and national levels, and
his licensure by the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania and by the Drug Enforcement
Agency includes Registered Nurse and Family
Nurse Practitioner.
He began teaching at Edinboro University in
1995. His current assistant professorship
responsibilities include providing clinical
instruction for sophomore, junior, senior and
graduate (nurse practitioner) students; classroom
instruction in the area of medical/surgical
nursing,
pediatrics,
pharmacology,
and
community health for undergraduate nursing
students; and classroom instruction in assessment
and diagnosis for graduate family nurse
practitioner students.

EDUCATOR, ADVISOR, RESEARCHER
& STAFF OF THE YEAR
Dr. BARER GHOSHEH, of the Geosciences
Department, is the 2009 Educator of the Year.
This award is presented annually to a faculty
member who demonstrates excellence in
teaching.
presented each year to an Edinboro faculty
member who stands out as an excellent academic
counselor and who enables students to achieve
their academic, personal and professional goals.
According to those faculty members and
students who nominated Dr. Ghosheh, he clearly
reaches the heights of teaching excellence in all he
does at Edinboro University.
In his letter of nomination. Dr. Kerry Moyer,
Chair of the Geosciences Department, wrote,
^'Peers and students alike consistently remark
upon the energy and vitality that Baher brings
into the classroom as well as his ability to get
students involved in the active learning process. I
believe it is that attitude and way of thinking that
sets Baher apart from many other educators."
In a letter of nomination for this award. Dr.
Kiran Misra wrote, "Dr. Sorhannus has published
his research on diversity dynamics of diatoms in
the January issue of Nature, an extremely
prominent scientific journal with a readership of
over 300,000. In addition, he has extensively
published in many other leading journals."
Dr. Misra's nomination also declared: "Dr.
Sorhannus has brought excellence in scholarship
into the classroom ... he continues to collaborate
with scientists from prestigious institutions such
as Cornell University, Columbia University, The
Smithsonian Institute and the University of
California-Davis, as well as his colleagues here at
Edinboro. The Biology and Health Services
Department strongly endorses Dr. Ulf Sorhannus
for Edinboro University's 2009 Scholar of the
Year Award."
The nomination came with 13 pages of
supporting documents, including lists of Dr.
Sorhannus' many fellowships, grants, research
seminars, teaching seminars, community service,
publications and research articles.
Dr. Moyer went on to say, "Dr. Ghosheh's
reputation for excellence has been recognized by
his peers and he is often sought after to assist in
University-supported initiatives. For example,
Baher has been kind enough to offer sections of
World Geography for the First-Year Experience
initiative and for special groups such as cohorts
supporting the Preschool Education and Greater
Erie Community Action Committee programs. 1
cannot think of a more worthy candidate for the
Edinboro University Educator of the Year Award
than Dr. Baher Ghosheh."
nomination form can do her justice. One would
need to work with her daily, as I have, to fully
appreciate how integral she is to the successful
functioning of our section of the university."
Dr. Jerra Jenrette, Chair of the History and
Anthropology Department, added, "Ms.
Wilkosz's impact on the primary stakeholders is
immeasurable! I cannot imagine how our
students would suffer if she were not the
frontline in our office. Her professionalism serves
as a model for students, other staff members and
faculty."
"Dr. Smith exhibits great intelligence in my
dealings with him and in his teachings," wrote
graduate student Theresa Gilliland. "Despite his
astute level, he remains easy to talk with,
approachable and friendly. He is a great source of
ii^ormation in that he is knowledgeable in terms
of which classes are offered and when, and also
helps guide students to make appropriate choices
in regard to interests and career goals."
A beneficiary of Ms. Wilkosz's work ethic,
student Ashley Grove, wrote, "Ms. Wilkosz is the
heart of the departments. Without her, the
departments would fail to work properly. Her
ability to balance everything that she does with a
smile every day makes everyone else smile."
Another student, Tracey Larson, also had
high praise in her letter nominating Dr. Smith for
the Advisor of the Year Award. "He helped
formulate my plan of study and encouraged me
to also complete the requirements for the Conflict
Management Certificate," she wrote. "As a
student, 1 appreciated his encouragement and
guidance throughout my two years at Edinboro
University."
Larson also added, "He has our best interests
at heart, and really wants us to have a great
academic experience!"
Dr. ULF SORHANNUS, of the Biology and
Health Services Department, is Edinboro
University's 2009 Scholar of the Year. The Scholar
of the Year Award was created as a means of
recogmzing the excellent practices and successes
of Edinboro's august faculty members, not only
to underscore the quality of scholarship at
Edinboro University, but also to encourage
continued best practices among faculty.
Dr.
ANDREW
