THE CEREMONIAL MACE
Prelude

5'
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the
academic procession by the College Marshal, Mr. James Harrison. A gift of the Alumni
Association, the Mace was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman, formerly of
the art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel. It was first used at the inauguration of Edinboro
State College's thirteenth president, Chester T. McNerney in 1966.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by
coneshaped rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver
fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls mounted on cups encircle the top of the shaft. Discs of silver
interspersed with rosewood compose the shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken
cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver to end In a small globe.

Commencement Address

'
A symbol of presidential authority, the first Presidential Medallion was presented to Foster
F. Diebold, Edinboro's fourteenth president, during the May 1981 Commemcement
ceremonies. It is permanently housed In the President's Office and presented to successive
presidents. Designed and executed by Mr. Henry Katzwinkel, Assistant Professor of Art, the
sterling silver Medallion consists of a three and one-half Inch pectoral pendant featuring on its
face the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On the reverse side is the figure
of a Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper Is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the
left is the Cross of England. Flanking the figure Is the date 1857, the opening year of the
College, and garland thistles. In the background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the
piper is an open book, an image of knowledge.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle, the symbol of
defense, protection, and strength. The collar of the medallion is comprised of a series of
two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an interlacing
knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudo rose design; and "ESC" In
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is
a Cross of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion
was fabricated and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.

For 125 years, the purpose of Edinboro
State College has been to provide a quality
program of higher education to the citizens
of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as
Inexpensively as possible. As a private institu
tion until 1913 and a state-owned college
since then, Edinboro has been called upon to
serve the community in a variety of ways.
Most of the time it has succeeded In its
purpose, occasionally It has fallen short, but
all of the time it has tried.
During 1982, Edinboro State is celebrat
ing the 125th anniversary of its founding as an
academy In 1857. Edinboro has the distinction
of being the second normal school estab
lished in Pennsylvania and the 12th In the
United States. Situated on a sprawling 585acre campus in the scenic resort community
of Edinboro, the College has become one of
the leading educational institutions in
western Pennsylvania. It has grown to more
than forty buildings including Baron-Forness Library, a modern seven-story structure which
serves as a focal point for the campus. The College's tradition of educational service and
research is enhanced by a distinguished faculty, more than two-thirds of whom have earned
doctoral degrees.
While continuing its mission in teacher education, Edinboro has developed new
programs in all aspects of arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and the pure
sciences. The College now offers more than 100 associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degree
programs, a diversity unmatched by any other college or university in northwestern
Pennsylvania. Recent program developments which have been most attractive to incoming
students are those in the areas of allied health, business administration, communications,
computer technology, nursing, and various pre-professional programs including law,
dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary science. Community college needs are also
addressed by the institution through its unique associate degree programs in such areas as
computer information processing, secretarial science, and general business.
Edinboro State College also offers an All-College Honors Program designed to encourage
outstanding students to strive for academic excellence. The first Pennsylvania state college to
develop an All-College Honors Program, Edinboro is the only institution In northwestern
Pennsylvania to offer a general honors degree. Credits are earned through independent study,
contracted projects in regular courses, and special honors classes.
Highly successful undergraduate internship programs in the arts, business and industry,
education, health, and the media are additional examples of the College's efforts to create a
close working relationship with the people it serves, while simultaneously offering students
intellectual and career opportunities. The Institute for Community Services, through the
Continuing Education Office, provides internships and consulting services to local, state, and
national governmental agencies. The Physics Department has been granted use of research
facilities at the Oakridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, while the College has cooperated
with several other educational institutions to provide students with opportunities through
college consortia. Field studies at Lew, Delaware, and Wallops Island, Virginia, are maintained
by the Pennsylvania Marine Science Consortium to provide Edinboro students with courses in
—7—

the bioiogicah chemical geologicah and physical aspects of oceanography. In addition,
science students have the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology located on the shores of the
Pymatuning Reservoir situated within a wildlife sanctuary and propagation area managed by
the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
Internships in psychology, social work, special education, and speech therapy are
conducted in various local agencies. Speech and hearing students work with crippled children
centers In Ashtabula and Andover, Ohio, and Erie, Pa. The psychology, sociology, and special
education departments have students working as aides in the Sarah Reed Home for Children,
the Harborcreek School for Boys, and the Gertrude Barber Exceptional Children's Center.
Students In the medical technology and nursing programs use the facilities of Hamot,
Greenville, Meadville City, and St. Vincent hospitals for their clinical experiences. The St.
Vincent Mental Health Center has a satellite center located on the campus in which students
obtain practicum experiences.
The College is continually striving to meet the needs of its constituents through its regular
and special program offerings. In addition to PACE and evening school programs designed to
meet the needs of working adults, Edinboro is also quite active In programs for the
handicapped and the educationally disadvantaged. Noted as one of the few "wheelchair"
campuses In the United States, Edinboro has been actively involved in opening doors for the
handicapped since 1974. The College provides services to physically disabled students with
varying degrees of severity as well as those who have visual or hearing impairments. Services
range from personal care and academic aides who provide typing, notetaking, and writing
services, to transportation.
As an economic institution, Edinboro's payroll, which included 677 employees during
1980, was $15.2 million. The College's presence was responsible for approximately 3,206 jobs,
and when student employees were added, a total of 4,865 jobs resulted.

Reflecting upon the College's historic and present role. President Foster Diebold,
commented, "There are many ways to assess the tradition of an Institution, but one of the
criteria of which we are most proud is our on-going ability to attract and successfully educate
students with a wide variance of academic abilities, interests, and needs. By diversifying itself
over the years and by instituting necessary and appropriate programming, Edinboro State
College has always fulfilled the kind of historic role which a public institution must fulfill - the
intellectual, cultural, social, and career satisfaction of individuals who represent the full range
of backgrounds and experiences."

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
0
m'-

The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic
dress, are a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth
centuries, where dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic
dress worn by those participating in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of
their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

'V

-i'1','''";!?

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use
of colored gowns. The bachelor and master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke
for the bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed
sleeves. The master gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with
square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the
elbow. The gown for the doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced
with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars of velvet in
black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for
the master's and the doctor's degrees. The doctor's hood is longer than the master's hood and
has distinguished panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the
color or coloring of the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the
degree was granted.
