The Mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular cabachon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the Mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver relief fleur-de-lis
design elements. The cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar symbolizing the thirteen
state colleges of Pennsylvania. The shaft of the Mace is composed of Brazilian Rosewood sections, separated by
sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated by a cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the
existing curriculums. The rib-like cone form is terminated by a small silver sphere s)m[\bolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the Ceremonial Mace include: turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

A symbol of presidential authority, the first Presidential Medallion was presented to Foster F. Diebold
during the May 1981 Commencement ceremonies. It is permanently housed in the President's Office and will be
presented to successive presidents. Designed and executed by Mr. Henry Katzwinkel, assistant professor of art,
the sterling silver Medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the
sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On the reverse side is the figure of a Gordon Highlander
with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of England. Flanking the
figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the background are the hills of
Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, an image of knowledge.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle, the symbol of defense, protection,
and strength. The collar of the medallion is comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three
different designs: the meigle, an interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudo rose
design; and "ESC" in interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields
is a Cross of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated and
cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.

University Marshal
Academic Vestments
Mr. Peterson has also served as the assistant art
department chairman and was interim chairman of the
department in 1983. For many years he has been chair
man of the Annual High School Art Day, one of the
most important events in the Art Department as it
attracts hundreds of high school art teachers and stu
dents from Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a ceremo
nial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was the out
ward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s academic
processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Gown
Along with his successful career, his artwork
has been acknowledged at numerous national and area
shows in Pennsylvania; Massachusetts; Washington,
D.C.; New York; and Ohio. From 1978 to 1987 Mr.
Peterson taught a sununer painting workshop at the
Marine Science Consortium at Wallops Island, Virginia.
In 1984 the workshop was also presented on the coast
of Maine.
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The bachelor and master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master gown is designed to be
worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms
protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or silk with an open
front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars of velvet in black or the
color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
His work could be described as semi-abstract
painting of representational themes from nature or reli
gious subject matter. He has three paintings in the per
manent collection of George Washington University,
two watercolors in the Erie County Public Library per
manent collection, and two large oil paintings in the
Edinboro University permanent collection. Professor
Peterson has taught many painting classes for various
area art leagues and has judged many county fair
shows.
Wayne Peterson
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master's
and the doctor's degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels. The
college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood lining. The velvet
trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaure
ate and master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard is
of gold thread. Undeigraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is con
ferred by the president.
4
Canying the Ceremonial Mace and leading the
academic procession as University Marshal is
Mr. Wayne Peterson, professor of art.
Wayne Peterson received a bachelor of arts
degree in art, certification in art education, and a
master of fine arts degree in painting from George
Washington University. He augmented his studies at
Maryland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Art,
University of Buffalo, and Allegheny College.
In addition to his professional accomplish
ments, Mr. Peterson is very active in the church com
munity. For the past 15 years, he has been advisor to
the Edinboro Christian Fellowship (Celebration),
including leadership of seminars on the relationship of
art to Christianity. He was commissioned to do a mural
to commemorate the 1(X) years of their church reforma
tion movement. In 1981, Mr. Peterson published an
article in the national periodical, Christian Leadership.
titled "Teacher Training in the Sunday School Program
for Senior High Youth."
Prior to coming to Edinboro University in
1966, Mr. Peterson had a distinguished career in art
education at Aberdeen High School and Northwood
High School in Maryland. During his 20 years at
Edinboro he has served on several committees includ
ing the Art Department Grievance Committee, Future
Development Committee, Scheduling Committee,
Evaluation-Tenure Committee, and Procedural Policy
Committee. When he was chairman of the Art
Department Curriculum Committee he oversaw the
creation or changing of more than 25 courses within

Professor Peterson has attained a high degree
of respect from his colleagues and students through his
strong dedication to the Edinboro University commu
nity over the years.

Honorary Doctorate
Commencement Speaker
had extensive service as court-appointed counsel for
indigent defendants.
Ms. Mary A. Poireco
Ms. Mary A. Poireco has been selected to receive an honorary doctorate during today's ceremony, the
Doctor Institutionists, Honores Causa: Doctor of Pedagogy. The honor recognizes her "leadership in education,
which has had positive and profound effects on the lives of both individuals and institutions; public service as
consultant and advisor in the field; influential leadership in teaching; contributions to community life; commit
ment to excellence in education; and selfless years of dedication to her students."
Enthusiastic about his new position,
Cunningham has made a strong commitment to the
office of district attorney. 'We need a district attorney
who will address the problems of this community,"
said Cunningham. "As district attorney, I will
vigorously prosecute the financiers of the drug traffic
to our youth; I will prosecute repeat offenders to the
fullest extent of the law; I will establish a productive
working relationship with all law enforcement
agencies." Cunningham is committed to utilizing the
resources of the DA’s office to attack crime problems in
our conununity.
Mary Pomeco graduated at the age of 14 in the first class of Academy High School in the City of Erie. At
age 16, she entered the Erie campus of Edinboro State Normal School. After a year, when she had to take classes
in Edinboro, she moved into Haven Hall. Ms. Porreco completed her teacher certification at Edinboro State
Normal School in 1922 and was asked by the principal of Columbus School in Erie to take on the ungraded class
room. For the next 42 years, Mary Porreco had a perfect attendance record.
Her first class had 35 students who ranged from five to thirteen. Some of these students were the most
mischievous of the entire Erie school system. Several had been suspended and were re-entering school through
her classroom. The discipline problems were severe and included children today who would receive all kinds of
testing and special handling, services which Ms. Porreco had hoped to provide through individualized attention
to their learning problems.
Her method of teaching was one copied today in "peer teaching" programs. She developed special pro
jects for the class and used the older pupils to help direct the younger ones. Her student leaders maintained class
room activities while she worked on special problems.
Ms. Porreco's next challenge was the second grade, the weakest students in the school. A secondary job
which she attempted was to deal with recent immigrants. Evenings she taught 17 students who had just come
from abroad and who wanted to become American citizens. Teaching the Americanization course was a job
which she kept for years. Some of these young men and women still remember her and communicate with her
from time to time.
Maintaining the drive to achieve, Maiy continued her schooling at Edinboro during summers, gradually
accumulating enough credits to earn a bachelor’s degree in the early 1940’s. She remembers studying art appreci
ation under the guidance of Professor Amy Doucette, gymnastics with Miss Aveiy, and music with Professor
Esther Wilson (Campbell), (^uite knowledgeable about music, she always felt a strong attachment to cultural pro
grams.
In 1939, Mary Porreco moved to Edison School where she spent 26 years teaching. As part of her creative
approach to instruction, she began using puppets in her fourth grade classes to encourage love for writing,
music, and drama.
M^ Porreco completed her master's degree at Allegheny College. Because of her affection for her home
town of Erie, she spent long hours working on her master's thesis on the history of the City of Erie.
We can be proud of Mary Porreco's commitment to excellence in education and of her superb perfor
mance in that role.
8
Active in the community, Cunningham has
spent 12 years as a Big Brother of America. He is a past
president and board member of the North East YMCA
and a current member of the Eastside YMCA board of
directors. A past president and member of the board
of directors of the North East Jaycees, Cunningham
was recently selected to receive the Erie Jaycees
Distinguished Service Award for 1987. The honor
recognized the "quality leadership to his family, his co
workers, and his community."

attorney last fall, Cunningham practiced six years with
the law firm of Orton & Dunlavey, P.C. In that position,
he was responsible for cases from pre-arrest
investigations through post-trial appeals. He handled
major jury trials on robbery, rape, burglary, drugs,
theft, aggravated assault, sex crimes, and drunk
driving, among others.
"Rusty" Cunningham is married to Susan

Department Curriculum Committee he oversaw the
creation or changing of more than 25 courses within
the department.

William ”Rust)^ Cunningham
William "Rusty" Cunningham, district attorney
for Erie County, will serve as guest speaker for today's
commencement ceremony.
"Rusty" Cunningham is a life-long resident of
Erie County; he graduated from North East High
School in North East, Pa. He attended Penn State Behrend before transferring to Allegheny College in
Meadville where he earned a bachelor of arts degree.
He received his Juris Doctor Degree from the
University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
Cunningham is a member of numerous
professional organizations including the Erie County
Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, tiie
Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, and the
Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
Before his election to the office of district
attorney last fall, Cunningham practiced six years with
the law firm of Orton & Dunlavey, P.C. In that position,
he was responsible for cases from pre-arrest
investigations through post-trial appeals. He handled
major jury trials on robbery, rape, burglary, drugs,
theft, aggravated assault, sex crimes, and drunk
driving, among others.
"Rusty" Cunningham is married to Susan

ALMAMATER
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater glorious;
Fresh wreaths we bring to hind thy brow.
Trials have passed and thou has stood victorious;
Never fairer, never statelier than now.
O Edinboro, Edinboro,
Ever praising thee in song;
While class speeds class as swift years pass.
To thee our hearts belong.
