The College Marshal

Leading the academic procession is the College Marshal. This honor is bestowed each Commencement upon an outstanding faculty member. Dr. Ernest Lafollette, senior member of the Secondary
Education Department and Director of Audio-Visual Education, is today honored for his years of
dedicated service to the students of Edinboro State College.
Prior to joining the faculty of Edinboro State College in 1946, Dr. Lafollette had been a social
studies teacher and director of Audio-Visual Education in the Grosse Pointe School, Michigan. For more
than a dozen years after coming to Edinboro, he taught the undergraduate guidance course. However, his
interest in Audio-Visual Education led to his appointment in 1959 as Director of Audio-Visual
Education. In addition to his Administrative and teaching duties, he served for many years as chairman
of the Homecoming Committee and adviser to the Camera Club. Photography and travel are of special

interest to Dr. Lafollette and he is well known for the sound motion pictures made of his travels. He
developed 200 glass plate negatives from the collection of L. U. Kupper who was the college
photographer from 189 5 io 1940. These photographs provide a valuable record of the early history of

The Ceremonial Mace

Treasurer

The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. Ernest Lafollette. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association,
was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty
and was first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.

Advisers
Mr. Micque Brown
Mr. Lee Forrest
Dr. Robert Zanotti

The Mace , twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured
silver to end in a small globe.

THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

AW ARD RECIPIENT

Dr. Chester T McNerney

Mr. C Ford Adamson

Dr. Chester T . McNerney , thirteenth president of Edinboro State College, assumed his duties
September 16, 1966. Through his dynamic leadership the College has undergone many changes
administratively , academically and physically.
The College is now structured under three major divisions : administrative , academic and student
personnel services. The Board of Trustees, Director of Development, the Business Office and similar
allied function s are attached to the President's office.
Under academic affairs there are five new schools, each headed by a dean. These include Graduate
Studies, Arts and Humanities, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics and Education.
The enrollment has grown to 7,000 students plus a complement of 4 71 full-time and 9 part-time
faculty members. A Master of Arts degree was instituted in 1968 and a Master of Science degree in 1970.
Deeply concerned in international educational opportunities, Dr. McNerney has fostered programs
in a Five-Week Summer Study Abroad Program at the Anglo-American College, England. Dr. McNerney
also heads a task force on international programs whose objective is the ascertaining of the type of
curriculum content of international nature being taught in the colleges and universities affiliated with
the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
Special programs in which he has evinced much interest include a National Science Foundation
Institute in Earth Sciences, a Social Studies Institute on Black Americans' Contributions and a summer
session at the Marine Consortium, Lewes, Delaware .
The President has continued to give strong support to the Master Plan for physical development
and recently dedicated the McComb Fieldhouse. Currently under construction are the Thomas R. Miller
Research-Learning Center, the new College Union and the Education building. Plans for many other
buildings are under design .
Through assiduous planning and endeavor, Dr. McNerney is moving the College toward university
status.

Mr. C. Ford Adamson , an alumnus of the 1910 class of Edinboro State College from Meadville ,
Pa. , has been chosen to be awarded a Certificate of Merit for his significant contributions to Edinboro
State College.
Mr. Adamson has devoted his life to education . He is presently serving as Crawford County's law
librarian. He has formerly served in the capacity of county superintendent and assistant superintendent
of the Crawford County schools.
Mr. Adamson has been a faithful alumnus of Edinboro and a sincere educator. He has been a
public servant in community affairs for many years.
His many associates in the areas of education and law, because of his numerous other endeavors,
consider him a man who has shown dignity, principle and other virtues in all he has accomplished. He is
identified as one who has always been striving to serve his fellowman.

PROGRAM NOTES

MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS

Academic Vestments

"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their
glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the
sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on
far away, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives." -Thucydides

The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today's
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to
live . This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro
State College.

Gown
Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed to
be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cutaway.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool , serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The. sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed,
a member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field ,
the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer
of Erie ; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabin, Long
Beach , California, established the gift.

Hood

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
Master's and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarships
The Alpha Iota and Alpha Omega Chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority offer
annual awards to two outstanding female education majors. Academic achievement, service to the
college and financial need are the criteria for selection of the recipients.

Hanna Kent Schoff Memorial Scholarships

The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the
moment the degree is conferred by the President.

The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers makes available each year two scholarships to
outstanding high school students who will attend Edinboro State College. These yearly scholarships are
continuous for four years, upon review of the scholarship committee. Awards are made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank , personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.

SCHOLARSHIP A WARDS

Pennsylvania Women's Club Art Scholarships

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM

Programs of financial assistance and the low cost of attending Edinboro State College have made
higher education a reality for most students possessing the desire and ability to achieve such a goal.

Each year three art students who achieved sophomore or higher standing are recipients of awards.
The Pennsylvania Federation of Women's Clubs provide the grants with the selections being made by the
Art Scholarship Award Committee.

In addition to the Scholarship awards listed above , nearly $3,500,000 in financial assistance will be
received by students at Edinboro State College during the 1970-71 academic year through the following

The College Marshal

The College Marshal leads the academic procession . This honor is bestowed each Commencement
upon an outstanding faculty member. Dr. Ernest LaFollette, senior member of the Secondary Education
department and Director of Audio-Visual Education, is today honored for his 25 years of dedicated
service to the students of Edinboro State College. Dr. LaFollette is retiring from the faculty this year.
He received his BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and his MA and PhD from Ohio State
University. Dr. LaFollette entered the teaching profession in 1926 and has given 45 years of service to
the field of education.

The Ceremonial Mace

The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. Ernest LaFollette. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association ,
was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty
and was first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood , alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured
silver to end in a small globe.

Prior to joining the faculty of Edinboro State College in 1946, he taught social studies in Berlin
Heights, Berea and Mentor, Ohio high schools and was social studies teacher and director of
Audio-Visual Education in the Grosse Pointe Schools in Michigan. For more than a dozen years after
coming to Edinboro he taught the undergraduate guidance course, as well as serving as director of
guidance. However, his interest in Audio-Visual Education led to his appointment in 1959 as Director of
Audio-Visual Education. He has taught a total of 126 class sections of Audio-Visual Education since
coming to Edinboro.
In addition to his Administrative and teaching duties, he served for many years as chairman of the
Homecoming Committee and adviser to the Camera Club.
Dr. LaFollette has had many academic honors during his educational career. He was elected to
Kappa Delta Pi during his junior year at Ohio Wesleyan University and was directly involved in having
the Edinboro campus chapter installed. He was elected to Phi Delta Kappa at Ohio State University in
1938 and signed in as a charter member of the Beta Nu Chapter here at Edinboro State College. He was a
University Fellowship student at Ohio State University while doing work on the doctorate , an honor
given to only four students on the graduate level at the time . He has been listed in Who's Who in the East
and Who's Who in American Education since 1950. Recently he was listed in Leaders in American
Education.
Photography and travel are of special interest to Dr. LaFollette and he is well known for the sound
motion pictures made of his travels. He developed 200 glass-plate negatives from the collection of L. U.
Kupper who was the college photographer from I 895 to 1940. These photographs provide a valuable
record of the early history of Edinboro State College.

PROGRAM NOTES

Academic Vestments
The gown , the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility . The academic dress worn by those participating in today's
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

MEMO RIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS

"They received, each for his own m~mory , praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men , where their
glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the
sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on
far away, without visible symbol , woven into the stuff of other men's lives." -Thucydides

Jack Finegan , April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to
live. This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro
State College.

Gown
Lois Caldwell North, Class of 1886
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns . The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed to
be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cutaway .
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool , serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Hood

A $100 annual scholarship has been endowed in memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her
daughter, Eleanor North of State College, Pa. The award is made each year to a student who plans to
enter the ministry upon completion of his or her education.

Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed,
a member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field,
the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer
of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabin, Long
Beach, California, established the gift.

SCHOLARSHIP AW ARDS

The standard cap is the mortarboard , usually the color of the gown . The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the
moment the degree is conferred by the President.

Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarships
The Alpha Iota and Alpha Omega Chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority offer
annual awards to two outstanding female education majors. Academic achievement, service to the
college and financial need are the criteria for selection of the recipients.

continuous for four years, upon review of the scholarship committee . Awards are made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank , personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.

The Ceremonial Mace

The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. James Coffman. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and
was first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped

PROGRAM NOTES

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today's
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

MEMO RIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their
glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the
sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on
far away, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives." -Thucydides

Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the worlq a better place in which to
live. This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro
State College.

Gown
Lois Caldwell North, Class of 1886
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Hood

A $ 100 annual scholarship has been endowed in memory of Mrs.

Helen Sabin Reed,
a member of the Education faculty since I 961.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarships
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the
moment the degree is conferred by the President.

The Alpha Iota and Alpha Omega Chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority offer
annual awards to two outstanding female education majors. Academic achievement, service to the
college and financial need are the criteria for selection of the recipients.

SCHOLARSHIP AW ARDS

Hanna Kent Schoff Memorial Scholarships
The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers makes available each year two scholarships to
outstanding high school students who will attend Edinboro State College. These yearly scholarships are
continuous for four years, upon review of the scholarship committee. Awards are made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM

Programs of financial assistance and the low cost of attending Edinboro State College have made
higher education a reality for most students possessing the desire and ability to achieve such a goal.
In addition to the Scholarship awards previously listed, nearly $3,500,000 in financial assistance
will be received by students at Edinboro State College during the 1970-71 academic year through the
following programs:

Pennsylvania Women's Club Art Scholarships
Each year three art students who achieved sophomore or higher standing are recipients of awards.
The Pennsylvania Federation of Women's Clubs provide the grants with the selections being made by the
Art Scholarship Award Committee.
- College Work-Study Program

Student Affairs Award

Edinboro State College has benefited. The awards are granted as a result of competition involving junior
and senior students on the basis of their student leadership roles.

- Institutional Loans

Traineeship in Mental Retardation

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today's
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of t~e ne~ds of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place m w~1ch to
live . This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan , a former student at Edmboro
State College.

Gown
Lois Caldwell North, Class of 1886
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

A $100 annual scholarship has been endowed in memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her
daughter, Eleanor North of State College, Pa. The award is made each year to a student who plans to
enter the ministry upon completion of his or her education.

Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
l

Hood

A $1 o 000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs . Helen Sabin Reed,
a member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field ,
the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabi~ Meyer
of Erie ; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabm , Long
Beach , California, established the gift.

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
Master's and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master' s hood and has distinguishing panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

The Alpha Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority offers an annua_l award
to an outstanding female education major. Academic achievement , service to the College and fmanc1al
need are the criteria for selection of the recipient.

outstanding high school students who will attend Edinboro State College. These yearly scholarships are

CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.
