The Junior Marshals
In the processional and recessional the degree candidates are escorted by the two Junior Marshals. The
position of Junior Marshal is an honor awarded each Commencement to the man and woman of the Junior
Class having earned the highest cumulative scholastic average.
Junior Marshals for the Midyear Commencement are Miss Lind'a Seitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Advisers
Mr. Richard Gromen
Mr. Bruce Hamilton
Mrs. Pauline Manwaring
Mr. Robert Zanotti
John H. Seitz, Jr., Pittsburgh and Mr. Daryl Mecklem, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mecklem, Fredonia,
Pennsylvania. Miss Seitz graduated from Keystone Oaks High School and is an elementary education major.
Mr. Mecklem was graduated from Lakeview High School and is a secondary education major specializing
in Social Studies.
The College Marshal
Leading the academic procession is the College Marshal. This honor is bestowed each Commencement
upon an outstanding faculty member. Dr. Ernest LaFollette, senior member of the Secondary Education
Department and Director of Audio-Visual Education, is today honored for his years of dedicated service
to the students of Edinboro State College.
Prior to joining the faculty of Edinboro State College in 1946, Dr. Lafollette had been a social studies
teacher and director of Audio-Visual Education in the Grosse Pointe School, Michigan. For more than a
dozen years after coming to Edinboro, he taught the undergraduate guidance course. However, his interest
in Audio-Visual Education led to his appointment in 1959 as Director of Audio-Visual Education. In
addition to his Administrative and teaching duties, he served for many years as chairman of the Homecoming Committee and adviser to the Camera Club. Photography and travel are of special interest to Dr.
Lafollette and he is well known for the sound motion pictures made of his travels. He recently developed
200 glass plate negatives from the collection of L. U. Kupper who was the college photographer from
1895 to 1940. These photographs provide a valuable record of the early history of Edinboro State College.
The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Dr. Ernest Lafollette. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and was
first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small globe.
PROGRAM NOTES
Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where
dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating
in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.
MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory
remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives." -Thucydides
Dr. Harry W. Earlley, March 25, 1966
Friends, alumni, family and students established a monetary gift in memory of Dr. Earlley, Dean of
Instruction, who was serving as Acting President of the College.
Gown
Dr. Thomas R. Miller, February 7, 1966
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc
cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of
wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's · degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing
panels. The College or the University granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap
until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.
Dr. Miller became the twelfth president of the College in 1954. Envisioning and developing a Master
Plan which is today under construction, the campus is comprised of 565 acres, a total final investment of
$45,000,000 with a planned completion date of 1972. Friends, alumni, faculty and students have established
a memorial gift in memory of this man for his many acts of kindnesses and understanding.
Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, December 18, 1967
Gary Norman, a former student at Edinboro State College, was killed in action in Vietnam. In his
memory his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norman, Erie, have set up a scholarship fund to which friends
and business organizations have contributed.
Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W . Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.
Dr. L. W. Vanlaningham, December 2, 1967
A memorial Student Teacher Loan Fund was established by associates, relatives and friends of Dr.
Vanlaningham who served the College as Director of Student Teaching and Placement from 1949 until
his death.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Hanna Kent Schoff Memorial Scholarships
The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers makes available each year two scholarships to
outstanding high school students who will attend Edinboro State College. These yearly scholarships are
continuous for four years, upon review of the scholarship committee. Awards are made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.
Pennsylvania Women's Club Art Scholarships
Each year three art students who achieved sophomore or higher standing are recipients of awards. The
Pennsylvania Federation of Women's Clubs provide the grants with the selections being made by the Art
Scholarship Award Committee.
FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM
Programs of financial assistance and the low cost of attending Edinboro State College have made
higher education a reality for most students possessing the desire and ability to achieve such a goal.
In addition to the Scholarship awards listed above, approximately $2,300,000 in financial assistance
will be received by students at Edinboro State College during the 1968-69 academic year through the
following programs:
Student Affairs Award
College Student Employment
Seven awards are granted to students on the basis of leadership from which the student body of Edinboro State College has benefited. The president, vice president and secretary of the Student-Faculty Council
each receives an award as a result of election to and serving in these offices. Four addiitonal awards are
granted as a result of competition involving junior and senior students on the basis of their student leader-

ship roles.
T raineeship in Mental Retardation
This year four seniors and two juniors of Edinboro State College were awarded a traineeship grant
from the Federal Government. This award is given for outstanding scholarship, campus citizenship and
professional promise in the field of teaching the Mentally Retarded.
Weldon Levinson Scholarship
A $100 gift was presented to the Scholarship Foundation Fund through the generosity of Mr. Weldon
Levinson of Meadville. The money is to be awarded to a worthy student from the Meadville area to help
further his education.

The College Marshal
The College Marshal leads the academic procession. This honor is bestowed each commencement upon
an outstanding faculty member. Miss Mildred Forness, Chairman of the Library Science Department, is
today honored for her 45 years of dedicated service and friendship to the students and faculty of Edinboro
State College.
The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Miss Mildred Forness. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and was
first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
In July, 1922, after being graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo, Miss Forness
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
joined the faculty and served for three years as assistant librarian. She then attended St. Bonaventure
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
University for two years of further study. Following her return to the college, Miss Forness was appointed
Head Librarian. She was granted her master's degree at Northwestern . University in 1937. She organized
the Library Science Department in 1960 after serving as chairman of both departments until 1966 after
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small globe.
THE GRADUATION CLASS
PROGRAM NOTES
In 1962 Edinboro State College was authorized to offer an undergraduate arts and sciences curriculum.
This event marked the first step in the plan change of Edinboro State College from a teacher education
college to a multipurpose institution of higher education.
The college draws closer to this goal as it graduates today its first candidate for the Bachelor of Science
Degree and its first candi·dates for the Master of Arts Degree.
Another chapter is added to the history of the college today as the college graduates its largest class. At
today's ceremony five hundred eighty-one bachelor degrees and forty-two master's degrees will be awarded.
Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries where
' dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those parti~ipating
in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.
THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
The Honorable William G. Davis, Minister of Education, Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Davis received the BA degree at the University of Toronto and the Bachelor of Laws at Osgoode
Hall. He was called to the Bar in 1955 and then joined his father's Brampton Law firm as a partner.
He served on the Peel Memorial Hospital Board, Brampton Public School Board, the Brampton
Chamber of Commerce and the local Kiwanis Club. As a member of the Ontario Young Progressive
Conservative Association, he became interested in politics.
In 1959 at age 29 Dr. Davis contested and won Peel riding ( electoral district) and was reelected
in 1963 and 1967.
In addition to serving on nearly every standing committee of the Legislature, Dr. Davis has been a
member of the select committee on the problems of government. In 1962 he was appointed Minister of
Education and in 1964 was placed in charge of the new Department of University Affairs.
Dr. Davis has long been interested in the special concerns of the child as a student. He has effected a
modernization of curriculum at all levels, reduced the number of school boards from over 5,000 to 150
and made Ontario the leading participant in the expansion of .technical and vocational training facilities.
Under Dr. Davis's direction a network of 20 colleges of applied arts and technology, a new form of
post-secondary institution, has been established across the province.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from bhck serge. The yoke, for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves.
It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees. Th<: Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing
panels. The College or the University granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
A provincial education television system inaugurated by Dr. Davis has already produced some 800
programs ranging from kindergarten to the Grade 1 3 level.
In 1967 Dr. Davis was elected chairman of the newly formed Council of Ministers of Education, a
body which constitutionally is the closest approach in Canada to a national office of education.
Dr. Davis has been honored by five universities for his work in education: Waterloo Lutheran University, University of Western Ontario, University of Toronto, McMaster University and Queen's University.
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap
until the moment the degree is con£erred by the President.

Academic Vestments
The College Marshal
The College Marshal leads the academic procession. This honor is bestowed each commencement upon
an outstanding faculty member. Dr. John Gatzy, professor of Biological Science, is honored today for 23
years dedicated service to the students of Edinboro State College.
Although Dr. Gatzy's academic background is in biological science, he came to the Edinboro College
campus in 1946 because of his interests in audio-visual education of which he was appointed Director. In
1959 he assumed the chairmanship of the Science Department. One of his major responsibilities during his
four years in this capacity was helping to plan Cooper Hall, the science building. He then relinquished
his administrative responsibilities to devote full time to teaching and research.
Dr. Gatzy has been active in other facets of the college community. He has participated in a National
Foundation Institute; is a charter member of Beta Beta Beta, national biology honor society; an adviser to
Alpha Phi Omega, national service fraternity, and freshman class adviser for many years.
Dr. Gatzy who retired to private life following the 1969 regular summer session will maintain his
interests in the college as an emeritus faculty member.
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, arc
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, wher~
dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating
in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn dosed and features long, flowing artd pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or dosed.
Hood
The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Dr. John Gatzy.
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees.

For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives."-Thucydides
MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
Dr. L. W. Vanlaningham, December 2, 1967

This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a

yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.
Hanna Kent Schoff Memorial Scholarships

personal interview.

Each year three art students who achieved sophomore or higher standing are recipients of awards. The
Pennsylvania Federation of Women's Clubs provide the grants with the selections being made by the Art
Scholarship Award Committee.
Student Affairs Award

each receives an award as a result of election to and serving in these offices. Four addiitonal awards are
granted as a result of competition involving junior and senior students on the basis of their student leadership roles.
T raineeship in Mental Retardation

Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;

It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees.

Hood
The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Dr. John Gatzy.
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees.

For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives."-Thucydides
