The College Marshal leads the academic procession. This honor is bestowed each commencement upon
an outstanding faculty member. Dr. Luther V. Hendricks, Dean of the new School of Behavioral and Social
Sciences, is honored today for 24 years of dedicated service to the students of Edinboro State College.
Dr. Hendricks received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in Social Studies from New York University and
his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He taught in high schools in New Jersey and New York and at New
York University before coming to Edinboro State College in 1946.

Advisers
Dr. John Yon
Mr. Jack Tohtz

THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Dr. Chester T. McNerney, 13th president of Edinboro State College, assumed his duties September
16, 1966. Through his dynamic leadership the College has undergone many changes administratively,
academically and physically. The College has been structured under three major branches: academic affairs,
student personnel services and administrative services. Under academic affairs five new schools have been
created: Behavioral and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Arts and Humanities, Education, and
Graduate Studies. Thirty-four new programs have been initiated during the last two and one-half years.
The faculty totals 436 professors. A Master of Arts Degree was instituted in 1968. A Computer Center
was dedicated in October 1969. Special programs include a Six-Week Summer of Graduate Study Abroad
at Alvescot Lodge, Oxford, England; a Four-Week Summer Program in Mexico and a summer session
at the Marine Science Consortium, Lewes, Delaware.
The President has continued to support the Master Plan for physical development and seen brought
to fruition Van Houten Dining Hall, the Maintenance Building ( now Administration), Scranton and
Shafer dormitories and the Gehring Health Center. Currently under construction are the fieldhouse-gymnasium, the College Union and the Research-Learning Center with others under design.
Through assiduous planning and endeavor, Dr. McNerney is moving the College toward university
status.

Dr. Hendricks is the founder and organizer of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council for the Social
Studies. He is also a member and active participant in the National Council for the Social Studies, Pennsylvania Historical Association, American Association of University Professors, Middle States Council for
the Social Studies, Pennsylvania State Education Association and a life member of the National Education
Association.
He was named to Who is Who in the East, Who is Who in American 'Education, and Who is Who in
Social Studies. He is author of /ames Harvey Robinson, Teacher of History and has published articles in
/unior-Senior High School Clearing Houses and /ournal of Higher Education.

The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. Luther V. Hendricks. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association,
was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and,
was first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-Iis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small globe.

PROGRAM NOTES

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where
dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating
in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.

"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory
remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives."-Thucydides

Dr. Harry W. Earlley, March 25, 1966
Friends, alumni, family and students established a monetary gift in memory of Dr. Earlley, Dean of
Instruction, who was serving as Acting President of the College.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn dosed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc
cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of
wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing
panels. The College or the University granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to live.
This award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

Dr. Thomas R. Miller, February 7, 1966
Dr. Miller became the twelfth president of the College in 1954. Envisioning and developing a Master
Plan which is today under construction, the campus is comprised of 565 acres, a total final investment of
$45,000,000 with a planned completion date of 1972. Friends, alumni, faculty and students have established
a memorial gift in memory of this man for his many acts of kindnesses and understanding.

Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, December 18, 1967
Gary Norman, a former student at Edinboro State College, was killed in action in Vietnam. In his
memory his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norman, Erie, have set up a scholarship fund to which friends
and business organizations have contributed.

Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap
until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memQry of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.

received by students at Edinboro State College during the 1969-70 academic year through the following

the junior class having earned an outstanding cumulative scholastic average.
Junior Marshals for the Spring Commencement are Miss Deanna Cheryl Youngs, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. C. Maurice Youngs, North East, Pennsylvania, and Mr. John Joseph McCurry, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John J. McCurry, Bakerstown, Pennsylvania. Miss Youngs was grad~ated from North East High School

Mr. Jack Tohtz
Dr. John Yon
Dr. Robert Zanotti

The College Marshal
The College Marshal leads the academic procession. This honor is bestowed each commencement upon
an outstanding faculty member. Mrs. Ruth Peck, Dean of Women, is honored today for 22 years ·of dedicated service to the women students of Edinboro State College.
Mrs. Peck came to Edinboro State Teachers College in 1948 as a critic teacher at Compton Elementary
School. In 1956 she was named Dean of Women and placed in charge of the three dormitories, East,
Haven and Heather, where total enrollment was approximately that of the number of girls now residing
in Dearborn Hall, where her present apartment is located. Currently, she has been responsible for the girls
in ten dormitories: Dearborn, Earp, Centennial, Scranton, Haven, Reeder, Heather, Scot, Edin and Manor.
Vitally interested in the women students, Mrs. Peck founded the Association of Women Students, an
advisory board that formulates and enforces regulations and promotes individual and group responsibilities;
To the work of this group she has dedicated years of service and inspiration.
Mrs. Peck earned the BS degree from Edinboro State College and the MA degree at Columbia
University.
As an emeritus faculty member Mrs. Peck will continue to live in Edinboro and remain active as
treasurer in the Alumni Association and Treasurer of the Edinboro Foundation and enjoy life on a day
by day basis.

The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Mrs. Ruth Peck. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and was
first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured ·silver
to end in a small globe.

THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

PROGRAM NOTES

Mr. Gordon C. Hurlbert, executive vice president, power generator systems, Westinghouse Electric
Corporationr is, the May commencement speaker. Mr. Hurlbert is responsible for the design, production
and sale of power-generating equipment used by electric utilities and industry.

Academic Vestments

A 2,2-year veteraµ with Wes~inghouse, Mr. Hurlbert served as Vice President, Manufacturing, from
1967 until his present appointment in January 1969. Previously, he was General Manager of the Westinghouse Power Transformer Division at Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Hurlbert joined Westinghouse following graduation from Marquette Univers, ity with a bachelor's
degree in mechanical engineer~ng in 1916. In 1954 he was among the first group selected by Westinghouse
to attend the 15,-month management program at Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and
received his ma,ster' of business administration degree in June 1955. He later held a variety of design,
purchasing and administrative assignments in the transformer, fractional horsepower and aviation gas
turbine divisions.

THE REVEREND DONALD H. SPENCER
The Reverend Donald H. Spencer, former minis~er of the First Presbyterian Church, Warren, is being
cited today for outstand, ing service and significant contributions to humanity.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, .flowing and pointed sleeves.

He has actively participated in school activities of the Warren campus, where he was student chaplain
rep.resenting the Warren Campus Ministerial Association. Dedicated to the interest of all young persons,
Rev . .srencer visited, the campus weekly to serve as confidant to those who needed his help.
In addition, he made possible the complete facilities of the church for the use of the students; and
the church, at its own expense, established a paved parking lot for the exclusive use of students.
Rev. Spencer also was largely responsible for the establishment of the Zodiac coffee house, constructed
with the help of students ,and towns per~ons, who act as chaperons.

MR. ROBERT K. BLOOM
Mr. Bloom was appointed executive secretary to the Governor, January 2, 1968.
He is cognizant of current higher educational needs having been a teacher in secondary education in
Pennsylvania and Florida schools. He also served as assistant to the president of Channellock, Inc., Meadville, before his appointment to his present position.
Mr. Bloom earned the BS degree in education at Edinboro State College and the Master of Education
degree at Temple University.

MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS

"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory
remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives." -Thucydides

PROGRAM NOTES

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today's
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away,
without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives." - Thucydides

Dr. Harry W. Earlley, March 25, 1966
Friends, alumni, family and students established a monetary gift in memory of Dr. Earlley, Dean of
Instruction, who was serving as Acting President of the College.

Gown
Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
q., Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed to
be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cutaway.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
Master's and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the
hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student who
shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of his
fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to live. This
award was established in memory of their son Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

Dr. Thomas R. Miller, February 7, 1966
Dr. Miller became the twelfth president of the College in 1954. Envisioning and developing a Master
Plan which is today under construction, the campus is comprised of 585 acres, a total final investment of
$45,000,000 with a planned completion date of 1975. Friends, alumni, faculty and students have established a memorial gift in memory of this man for his many acts of kindnesses and understanding.

Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, December 18, 1967
Gary Norman, a former student at Edinboro State College, was killed in action in Vietnam. In his
memory his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norman, Erie, have set up a scholarship fund to which friends and
business organizations have contributed.

Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the
moment the degree is conferred by the President.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
