THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. Edward Masonbrink. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association,
was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman, formerly of the Art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel. The Mace was first used at the inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The ne^ of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which entw with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small globe.

MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where
dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating
in today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.

’“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory
remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of
famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without
visible symbol, woven into the stuflF of other men’s lives.”—^Thucydides

Jack Finegan, April 9,1969
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
^wns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc
cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of
wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to live.
This award was established in memory of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

Lois Caldwell North, Gass of 1886
Two $100 annual scholarship have been endowed in memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her
daughter, Eleanor North of State College, Pa. 'The awards are made each year to students who plan to
enter the ministry upon completion of their education.

Hood
Helen Sabin Reed, October 18,1966
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master’s
and the Doctor’s degrees. 'The Doctor’s hood is longer than the Master’s hood and has distinguishing
panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. 'Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
Mrs. Mildred Sabin \bung, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.

Gip
Vlahakis Award, January 15,1972
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. 'The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. 'The tassel for the
Doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap
until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.

Each year a $250 scholarship award is made available to a student at Edinboro State College who is
majoring or planning to major in chemistry. 'The award has been established by Mrs. 'Thekla Vlahakis
of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K. Vlahakis, and two sons, TJCyter and William.

LET YOUR MIND WANDER OVER AMERICA
by Thomas Hornby Ferril
Let your mind wander over America:
By designated by a tumbleweed for tears as if it were a flag.
Anything it can be, anywhere;
Remember that marker down in Austin, Texas,
When you were marching right front into line:
Thermopylae had her messenger of defeat,
The Alamo had none!
Let your mind wander, fluidly, freely...
Marker, meadow, birds, bison, cornfields,
Model T s, brave men, cowards;
Let your mind wander carelessly, I tell you.
Like the drone of a sycamore church through the hollyhocks:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
It’s easier, I tell you, wandering that way, than being told.
It will be gone if ever comes the time forbeing told to love America.
Oh, not too large; be subtler, if you like,
than cannon fire, to know its meaning.
I’d tell you how even a summer dragonfly could
could hurt an old dead warrior’s cheek three time,
and mine a fourth, to make me feel the strong South
bleeding hard against the North;
And ice against the breast.
Oh many a breast moving wintry West...
Let your mind wander over America.
Let your mind wander, using more deeply than in war
whatever blessed interval between the wars there is:
For if you go to war and come back whole,
there must be meaning in some gate you open.
And if you go to war and come not home,
there must be meaning in some gate you open.
Let your mind wander over America.
It will be gone if ever comes the time for being told to love America.

ALMA MATER
Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater Glorious,
Fresh Wreaths we bring to bind Thy brow
Trials have past and Thou hast stood victorious
Never fairer never statelier than now,
O Edinboro, Edinboro

Ever praising Thee in song
While class speeds class as swift years pass
To Thee our hearts belong.

PROGRAM NOTES

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
AND RECIPIENT OF CERTIFICATE OF MERIT

DR. HARRIET LONG
The College Marshal

WILLIAM G. DAVIS
Premier of Ontario

Dr. Harriet Long, a member of the Geography department, will be the College Marshal for the
August, 1974, Commencement. While leading the academic procession, she will carry the Ceremonial
Mace which signifies many years of academic achievement and service to Edinboro State College.

The Honorable William G. Davis, Premier of Ontario, Canada, will serve as speaker for the 1974
Summer Commencement. In recognition of his unending support to higher education, he is being
honored today by receiving a distinguished Certificate of Merit.
A firm believer in progressive change and reform in government, Davis was elected to the Provincial
Parliament in 1959 and re-elected in 1963 and 1967. He was named Premier of Ontario in 1971 after he
had been chosen as the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario earlier that same year.
Prior to his ascension to the Premiership, Davis was appointed Minister of Education in 1962 and in
1964 was placed in charge of the newly created Department of University Affairs.
Combining respect for the best of tradition with a sharp sensitivity to the demands of life in the modern
world, Davis engineered a massive effort of reform and expansion throughout the entire sphere of
Ontario education, from the kindergarten years to the level of graduate studies in the universities.
Through his efforts, the province, likewise, became a leading participant in the expansion of technical
and vocational training facilities.
His outstanding contributions to both education and government assure him a place of exceptional
distinction in the history of his province and of Canada.
Since the Canadian constitution makes education a provincial matter, Davis became convinced that
the rapidly expanding scope of education throughout Canada made close consultation an essential
national concern. He sought the agreement of his colleagues across the country, and in June, 1967, they
jointly decided to establish the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada, for interprovincial coopera
tion and to coordinate education as a national priority. They elected Davis their first Chairman.
In higher education, one of Premier Davis’ overriding goals is to make university education available
to all with the desire and ability to undertake it. In close consultation with the universities, he approved
programs for student loans, grants, fellowships and scholarships which helped make this become a reality.
Through his efforts, the provincially assisted universities of Ontario are securely launched on a progres
sive course, well attuned to the aspirations of the present and intellectually equipped to face the
challenges of the future.
As part of increased attention focused on the need for training in technology of all kinds, Davis
continued with improvements in provincial technological institutes. Probably the best known among
these was the Ryerson Institute of Technology, which he nurtured through successive phases of expan
sion into the present Ryerson Poly technical Institute. In 1972, the Premier received the first Ryerson
honorary degree.
When it became clear in the mid-60’s that both the rapidly expanding institutions and universities
could not keep pace with the public demand for further education, Davis, in the dual role of Minister of
Education and University Affairs, led the planning which brought into existence the so-called Colleges of
Applied Arts and Technology. These institutions, which form one of the outstanding accomplishments
in his record of public service, were created to meet the needs of graduates from any secondary school
program who did not wish to follow the university route.
The recipient of six Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees, Mr. Davis graduated from Osgoode Hall Law
School and was called to the Bar in 1955. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Toronto in
1951.
A member of numerous organizations and affiliations, the Premier resides in Brampton, Ontario, with

Joining the Edinboro State College faculty in 1955, Dr. Long has served as Director of the Liberal
Arts program for five years and head of the Geography department for ten years. As a dedicated
professor of geography, her concerns are centered primarily in teaching and traveling. She has visited
Northwestern and Southern Europe, the Soviet Union, the Caribbean and different parts of the United
States to remain current in her discipline. As a special interest. Dr. Long has done much field work and
research on “new towns” in the United States and Europe.
Among her professional memberships are the Association of American Geographers, the Society of
Women Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education, the Erie branch of the Association
of American University Women, Common Cause, APSCUF/PAHE and Gamma Theta Upsilon, a national
professional fraternity in Geography.
Dr. Long is listed in Who’s Who of American Women and is the author of “A Geographer’s Role in
Aerial Photo Interpretation” in Professional Geographer and book reviews. In 1972, she was named an
Outstanding Educator of America.
A recent vice-president of the Faculty Association, she has also served as chairman of the honors and
independent study committees and as a member of the curriculum committee.
Dr. Long is a past member of the U.S. Naval Reserve Unit of Erie, Pa., retiring with the rank of
Lieutenant Commander.
She received her B.S. degree in Education from New York State Teachers College, Buffalo, New
York, and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the College Marshal, Dr. Harriet Long. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman, formerly of the Art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel. The Mace was first used at the inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured
silver to end in a small globe.

PROGRAM NOTES

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress
was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in
today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they
attended.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
Bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master
gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part
has an arc cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is
made of wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and
bell-shaped with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was
obtained.

“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their
glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the
sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on
far away, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men’s lives.”—Thucydides

Jack Finegan, April 9, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student
who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of
his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to
live. This award was established in memory of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro
State College.

Lois Caldwell North, Class of 1886
Two $ 100 annual scholarships have been endowed in memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her
daughter, Eleanor North of State College, Pa. The awards are made each year to students who plan to
enter the ministry upon completion of their education.

Hood
Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
Master’s and the Doctor’s degrees. The Doctor’s hood is longer than the Master’s hood and has
distinguishing panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or
coloring of the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was
granted.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed,
a member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field,
the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer
of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long
Beach, California, established the gift.

Cap
Vlahakis Award, January 15, 1972
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until
the moment the degree is conferred by the President.

Each year a $250 scholarship award is made available to a student at Edinboro State College who
is majoring or planning to major in chemistry. The award has been established by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis
of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K. Vlahakis, and two sons, Walter and William.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarships
The Alpha Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma professional sorority offers an annual award
to an outstanding female education major. Academic achievement, service to the College and financial
need are the criteria for selection of the recipient.

FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM

higher education a reality for most students possessing the desire and ability to achieve such a goal.

Over $4,500,000 in financial assistance will be received by students at Edinboro State College

Hannah Kent Schoff Memorial PTA Scholarships
The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers makes available each year a scholarship to an
outstanding high school student who will attend Edinboro State College. This yearly scholarship is
continuous for four years, upon review of the scholarship committee. The award is made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.

ALMA MATER
Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater Glorious,
Fresh Wreaths we bring to bind Thy brow
Trials have past and Thou hast stood victorious
Never fairer never statelier than now,
O Edinboro, Edinboro
Ever praising Thee in song
While class speeds class as swift years pass
To Thee our hearts belong.

PROGRAM NOTES
THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the
academic procession by the College Marshal, Mrs. Mildred D. Bruce. The Mace, a gift of the
Alumni Association, was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman, formerly of
the Art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel. The Mace was first used at the inauguration
of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by
cone-shaped rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver
fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver
interspersed with rosewood compose the shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken
cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver to end in a small globe.

program notes

MRS. MILDRED D. BRUCE
The College Marshal
Leading the ranks of the academic procession as College Marshal will be Mrs. Mildred
D. Bruce of the Art department. For her, carrying the ceremonial mace is an honor that
follows many years of serious dedication to Edinboro State College. At the end of the current

PROGRAM NOTES

MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the
grandest of all sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the
minds of men, where their glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion
comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven
only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far way, without visible symbol, woven
into the stuff of other men’s lives.’’—Thucydides

Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic
dress, are a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth
centuries, where dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic
dress worn by those participating in today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of
their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

Dorothy Cliflford Memorial Theater Scholarships, August 1969
Dr. Dorothy Clifford was a highly respected member of the drama faculty for many
years. Two memorial awards were established with funds contributed by Elwood Williams
of the Music and Drama department. The funds were royalties earned by the production
of the Williams’ play, A New Song in My Mouth.

Gown

atv':

Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the
use of colored gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The
yoke for the Bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and
pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very
long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms protrude through
a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or silk with an
open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn
only for the Master’s and the Doctor’s degrees. The Doctor’s hood is longer than the Master’s
hood and has distinguishing panels. The college or the university granting the degree is
indicated by the color or coloring of the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates
the field in which the degree was granted.

Helen Sabin Reed, October 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen
Sabin Reed, a member of the education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist
in the reading field, the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education
major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California,
sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach, California, established the gift.

Cap

College who is majoring or planning to major in chemistry. The award has been established
by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K. Vlahakis,
and two sons, Walter and William.

The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black
for the Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the
cap. The tassel for the Doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the
tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.

Edinboro State College is the oldest Pennsylvania teacher training
school west of the Allegheny Mountains and the second oldest such school
in the State. Edinboro Academy was chartered in 1856 and became
a State Normal School by the Act of 1857.
Under the original charter the school was privately administered
until 1861, when the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania chartered it as a
State Normal School. The school was purchased by the Commonwealth
in 1914.
In 1926 the State recognized Edinboro as a four-year college and
granted it the right to offer undergraduate degrees in elementary, sec
ondary and art education.
In 1957 the College was authorized to begin its graduate program
of teacher education which leads to the Master of Education degree in
elementary and secondary education with specialization in the areas of
English, Science and Social Studies. In 1964 the program was extended to
