The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are
a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where
dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participatinB
in today's academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution
they attended.
Gown
Advisers
Mr. Harvey L. Heath
Mrs. Pauline Manwaring
Miss Nola Weed
Mr. Robert Zanotti
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc
cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of
wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Hood
The Ceremonial Mace
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Dr. Luther Hendricks. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was
designed and executed by Mr. Seymour Blinderman and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel of the Art faculty and was
first used at the Inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by cone-shaped
rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls
mounted on cups encircle the top of the staff. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the
shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small globe.
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing
panels. The College or the University granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate and Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap
until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.

upon an outstanding faculty member. Mrs. Esther Campbell, a member of the Music and Drama department, is today honored for 40 years of dedicated service to the students of Edinboro State College. She
will retire to private life following this commencement. Since coming to the college in 1928 Mrs. Campbell
has served for 35 years as director of the Collegiate Singers and for many years as director of the Women's
Chorus, the Men's Glee Club, and the Madrigal Singers, in addition to her administrative and teaching
duties. In conjunction with the director of dramatics and the Collegiate Players, she presented such musical
productions as "Oklahoma!" and "South Pacific." Mu Kappa Gamma, the honorary music fraternity, was
founded under the guidance and direction of Mrs. Campbell, who has continued to serve as its adviser. She
was for 36 years one of the advisers to Alpha Delta, social sorority. Mrs. Campbell will maintain her interest
in the College as an emeriti faculty member.
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Mrs. Esther Campbell.
Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small gfobe.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored
gowns. The Bachelor and Master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the Bachelor gown
is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The Master gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc
cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the Doctor degree is made of
wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell~shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the Master's
and the Doctor's degrees. The Doctor's hood is longer than the Master's hood and has distinguishing
panels. The College or the University granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

leading the academic procession is the College Marshal. This honor is bestowed each Commencement
upon an outstanding faculty member. Dr. John Gatzy, senior member of the Science Department, is today
honored for his years of dedicated service to the students of Edinboro State College.
Although Dr. Gatzy's academic background is in biological science, it was his interest in audio-visual
education which brought him to the campus of Edinboro State College in 1946 as Director of Audio-Visual
Education. In 19.59 he was appointed Chairman of the Science Department. As Chairman of the Department he assumed the major responsibilities for planning the Cooper Hall Science Building. After four years
of service as Department Chairman, Dr. Gatzy asked to be relieved of his administrative responsibilities
so that he could devote his full time to teaching and research.
In addition to his administrative and teaching duties, he served for many years as adviser to the freshman class; to Beta Beta Beta, the national biological honor society; and to Alpha Phi Omega, a national
service fraternity for college and university men.
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Grand Marshal, Dr. John Gatzy. The Mace, a gift of the Alumni Association, was

The College Marshal
Leading the academic procession is the College Marshal. This honor is bestowed each commencement
upon an outstanding faculty member.
Sunken cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver
to end in a small gfobe.

Dr. Harry W. Earlley, March 25, 1966
Friends, alumni, family and students established a monetary gift in memory of Dr. Earlley, Dean of
Instruction, who was serving as Acting President of the College.
Dr. Thomas R. Miller, February 7, 1966
Dr. Miller became the twelfth president of the College in 1954. Envisioning and developing a Master
Plan which is today under construction, the campus is comprised of 565 acres, a total final investment of
$45,000,000 with a planned completion date of 1972. Friends, alumni, faculty and students have established
a memorial gift in memory of this man for his many acts of kindnesses and understanding.
Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, December 18, 1967
Gary Norman, a former student at Edinboro State College, was killed in action in Vietnam. In his
memory his. parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Norman, Erie, have set up a scholarship fund to which friends
and business organizations have contributed.
Helen Sabin Reed, October 18, 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the Education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Elementary Education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie;
Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.
Dr. L. W. Vanlaningham, December 2, 1967
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown.· The tassel is black for the
Baccalaureate ana Master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
Doctor's mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right shle of the cap
until the moment the degree is conferred by the President.
A memorial Student Teacher Loan Fund was established by associates, relatives and friends of Dr.
VanLaningham who served the College as Director of Student Teaching and Placement from 1949 until
his death.

leading the academic procession is the College Marshal.
