MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
"They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all sepulchres, not that in which their
mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes
by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far
away, without visible symbol, woven into the staff of other men’s lives.” - Thucydides

AMSCO FOUNDERS MEMORIAL FUND SCHOLAR
SHIPS

LOIS CALDWELL NORTH, CLASS of 1886

The trustees of the American Sterilizer Company
Founders Memorial Fund make three awards available for
outstanding students who have graduated from Erie County
high schools.

Two $100 annual scholarships have been endowed in a
memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her daughter,
Eleanor North, of State College, Pa. The awards are made
each year to students who plan to enter the ministry upon
completion of their education.

JACK FINEGAN, APRIL 1969

HELEN SABIN REED, OCTOBER 1966

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award
to an outstanding male English student who shows a
tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make
mankind aware of the needs of his fellow-man and that
places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better
place in which to live. This award was established in
memory of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at
Edinboro State College.

A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State
College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a member of
the education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a
specialist in the reading field, the yearly $500 scholarship is
awarded to an elementary education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin
Meyer of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles,
California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long
Beach, California, established the gift.

MILDRED FORNESS MEMORIAL LOAN

VLAHAKIS AWARD, JANUARY 1972
Each year a $300 scholarship award is made available to a
student of Edinboro State College who is majoring or
planning to major in chemistry. The award has been
established by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis of Pittsburgh in
memory of her late husband, George K. Vlahakis, and two
sons, Walter and William.

Miss Forness held a position at the College from 1922
until her retirement in 1969. During that time she served in
many capacities, including head of the Library and head of
the Library Science Department. Her relatives and friends
have contributed to establish loans for library science
students.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

CHESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Each year the Chess Club offers a prize for active student
members. The award is based upon academic standing and
United States Chess Federation ratings. The Chess Club
Scholarship is funded through monies earned from
sponsoring chess competition on the college campus.

THE BRUCE MANVILLE MORRISON FUND
The fund was established by the estate of the late Bruce
Manville Morrison to provide financial support for
Edinboro State College graduate students. Awards are made
on a continuing basis to graduate students who can
document financial need. The Morrison Fund also has
provisions for the acquisition of rare books for the College
Library.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDY
SCHOLARSHIPS
Eight Russian Language and Area Study Scholarships
were granted to promising high school seniors desiring to
combine a major in Russian with a secondary specialization
in either economics, business, accounting, or engineering.
This program, funded in part by industrial firms, is
intended to prepare the scholarship winners for careers in
International Trade in general, and East-West Trade in
particular.

HANNAH KENT SCHOFF MEMORIAL PTA
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers
makes available each year a scholarship to an outstanding
high school student who will attend Edinboro State College.
This yearly scholarship is continuous for four years, upon
review of the scholarship committee. The award is made on
the basis of CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal
attributes, co-curricular activities, desire to teach and a
personal interview.

STUDENT EMERGENCY LOAN FUND
The Student Emergency Loan Fund has been established
for undergraduate or graduate students who are in
immediate need of a small loan. Contributions have been
made to this fund in memory of:
- Dr. Harry W. Earlley, Dean of Instruction, who was
serving as acting President of the College at the time of
his death, March 25, 1966.
- Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, a former student at
Edinboro State College, killed in action in Vietnam,
December 18, 1967.
- Dr. L. W. VanLaningham who served the College as
Director of Student Teaching and Placement from
1949 until his death, December 2, 1967.

PROGRAM NOTES

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority,
is carried at the head of the academic procession by the
College Marshal, Miss Mary Rose Ditz. A gift of the Alumi
Association, the Mace was designed and executed by Dr.
Seymour Blinderman, formerly of the Art faculty, and Mr.
Henry Katzwinkel. It was first used at the inauguration of
President Chester T. McNerney. The Mace, twenty-seven
inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded
with cone-shaped rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with
rosewood, alternated with silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured
pearls mounted on cups encircle the top of the shaft. Discs
of silver interspersed with rosewood compose the shaft
which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken cultured pearls
encircle a rounded cone with textured silver to end in a small
globe.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major
components of the academic dress, are a ceremonial
inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh
and twelfth centuries, where dress was the outward sign of
privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by
those participating in today’s academic processional
symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and
the institution they attended.

GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain

universities have authorized the use of colored gowns. The
bachelor and master gowns are fashioned from black serge.
The yoke for the bachelor gown is designed to be worn
closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The
master gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its
sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part
has an arc cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the
elbow. The gown for the doctor degree is made of wool,
serge or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet
panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three
bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which
the doctorate was obtained.

HOOD

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the
hood. It is usually worn only for the master and doctor
degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood
and has distinguished panels. The college or the university
granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of
the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the
field in which the degree was granted.

CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of
the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate and
master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the
cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard is of gold
thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of
the cap until the moment the degree is conferred by the
president.

Because of the demand to meet a deadline to print this program and the short period of time between the end of classes, review of all
academic programs, delays caused by such factors as illness of some students and evaluation by the Office of Academic Affairs, the
College does not claim the list of degree candidates is absolutely accurate. Students are granted degrees only if they meet all academic
and financial requirements.

THE COLLEGE MARSHAL
DR. JACK B. HETRICK

Carrying the Ceremonial Mace and leading the ranks of the
academic procession as College Marshal is Dr. Jack B. Hetrick who
has retired as the Dean of the School of Education at Edinboro
State College. In recognition of his educational leadership and
human services. Dr. Hetrick will be honored during the commence

ment proceedings by receiving the College’s highest honor, a Certificate of Merit.
Prior to his position at Edinboro, Hetrick served as superintendent of the
Grove City Area School District from 1956 through 1966. He has also been a high
school and college teacher, an adult evening school director, a principal and
college department head.
A Western Pennsylvania native, Hetrick attended public schools in both
Masontown and Butler. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock
State College and the Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees from
the University of Pittsburgh.
Except for a four-year term of service with the U.S. Army during World War
II, Dr. Hetrick has spent his working life in the field of education.
The retiring dean has been affiliated with a number of professional organiza
tions including Phi Delta Kappa, PSEA, NEA, the National Society for the Study
of Education and the American Association of School Administrators. He served
as the chief institutional representative for Edinboro State College to the Ameri
can Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
In 1964 he received a citation from the Pennsylvania Department of Public
Instruction for his distinguished contributions to the advancement of education.
The citation acknowledged his involvement in developing the library and media
center at Grove City Area High School.
Dr. Hetrick has been very active in committee and conference work. He has
chaired visiting committees for the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Secondary Schools and has been a member on Department of Education evalua
tion teams. He was a delegate to the London Assembly of the International
Council on Education for Teaching in 1972 and was listed in “Who’s Who in the
East.”
During his encumbrance as dean at the College, the teacher education faculty
changed from theoretical preparation to a competency-based teacher education
program.
While superintendent of the Grove City Area School District, he also served as
Grove City Rotary Club President and has been an active Rotarian for the past 22
years.
Dr. Hetrick and his wife, Anna, have three children. Their elder son, William,
received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh and
currently practices at Pittsburgh’s Mercy Hospital. Elizabeth (Mrs. Gene Corley) is
an employee on the governor’s staff in South Carolina, while Charles is a systems
analyst in Wooster, Ohio.

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
DR. EDWARD C. McGUIRE
Dr. Edward C. McGuire, recently appointed Commissioner of Higher Educa
tion for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will serve as guest speaker for to
day’s commencement exercises. For his outstanding development and leadership
in higher education. Dr. McGuire will be honored today by receiving a distinguish
ed Certificate of Merit from the College.
Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Dr. McGuire had served as vice
president for student affairs at Drexel University in Philadelphia for the past eight
years.
Originally from Manhattan, New York, he received his Bachelor of Science
degree from the State University of New York, earned his Master’s degree from
Southern Illinois University and was awarded his doctorate in education from
Wayne State University in 1968.
Dr. McGuire served as assistant to the president at the University of Rhode
Island from 1961 through 1963 before being named its dean of students. In 1967
he became vice president of Behavioral Science Associates in Newark, New Jersey,
where he still serves in that same capacity. He was appointed dean of students at
Rutgers University from 1966 through 1969.
In addition to his administrative experience. Dr. McGuire also served as a
professor of psychology at Rhode Island, Rutgers and Drexel universities. He was
also an instructor in industrial relations at Newark College of Engineering from
1966 through 1969.
Much of Dr. McGuire’s work in education has been in the area of guidance and
counseling which was his major field of concentration while working toward the
doctorate degree. He has been noted in the past for his service to students and
intense feeling for student concerns.
In addition to his numerous professional activities, the newly appointed Com
missioner was also director of student housing at Wayne State University, a U.S.
office of education fellow in Washington, D.C., and a consultant to OEO Career
Programs in New York City.
A contributor to numerous educational publications. Dr. McGuire was selected
to the editorial board of the NASPA Journal in 1966 and is still a member of that
board. He was program chairman for the Rhode Island Personnel Association in
1962 and served as advisor for the Student Christian Movement of New England
from 1964 through 1966.
Among his professional memberships are the American Personnel and Guid
ance Association, the American College Personnel Association, the National

Education Association, the American Academy of Political and
Social Science and the American Association for the Advancement
of Science. He is, likewise, a member of Kappa Delta Pi.
A Navy veteran. Dr. McGuire makes his home in Media, Penn
sylvania, with his wife and five children.

MEMORIAL FOUNDATION GIFTS
“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all sepulchres, not that in which
their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion
comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but
lives on far away, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men’s lives.”-Thucydides

AMSCO FOUNDERS MEMORIAL FUND

LOIS CALDWELL NORTH, CLASS of 1886

The trustees of the American Sterilizer Company Founders
Memorial Fund make three awards available for outstanding
students who have graduated from Erie County high schools.

Two $100 annual scholarships have been endowed in
memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her daughter, Eleanor
North, of State College, Pa. The awards are made each year to
students who plan to enter the ministry upon completion of
their education.

JACK FINEGAN, APRIL 1969

HELEN SABIN REED, OCTOBER 1966

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award
to an outstanding male English student who shows a tendency
to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind
aware of the needs of his fellow-man and that places an
emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in
which to live. This award was established in memory of their
son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.

A $ 10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College
in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a member of the educa
tion faculty from 1961 through 1966. Because Mrs. Reed was
a specialist in the reading field, the yearly $500 scholarship is
awarded to an elementary education major. Mrs, Theo Sabin
Meyer of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, Cali
fornia; sisters, and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach,
California, established the gift.

MILDRED FORNESS MEMORIAL LOAN

her retirement in 1969. During that time she served in many
capacities, including head of the Library and head of the
Library Science Department, Her relatives and friends have
contributed to establish loans for library science students.

Each year a $300 scholarship award is made available to a
student of Edinboro State College who is majoring or planning
to major in chemistry. The award has been established by Mrs.
Thekla Vlahakis of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband,
George K. Vlahakis, and two sons, Walter and William.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

CHESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
Each year the Chess Club offers a prize for active student
members. The award is based upon academic standing and
United States Chess Federation ratings. The Chess Club Schol
arship is funded through monies earned from sponsoring chess
competition on the college campus.

HANNAH KENT SCHOFF MEMORIAL PTA SCHOLAR
SHIPS
The Pennsylvania Congress of Parents and Teachers makes
available each year a scholarship to an outstanding high school
student who will attend Edinboro State College. This yearly
scholarship is continuous for four years, upon review of the
scholarship committee. The award is made on the basis of
CEEB test results, grades, class rank, personal attributes, cocurricular activities, desire to teach and a personal interview.

THE BRUCE MANVILLE MORRISON FUND
The fund was established by the estate of the late Bruce
Manville Morrison to provide financial support for Edinboro
State College graduate students. Awards are made on a contin
uing basis to graduate students who can document financial
need. The Morrison Fund also has provisions for the acquisi
tion of rare books for the College Library.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDY SCHOLAR
SHIPS
Eight Russian Language and Area Study Scholarships were
granted to promising high school seniors desiring to combine a
major in Russian with a secondary specialization in either
economics, business, accounting, or engineering. This program,
funded in part by industrial firms, is intended to prepare the
scholarship winners for careers in International Trade in gen
eral, and East-West Trade in particular.

STUDENT EMERGENCY LOAN FUND
The Student Emergency Loan Fund has been established
for undergraduate or graduate students who are in immediate
need of a small loan. Contributions have been made to this
fund in memory of:
— Dr. Harry W. Earlley, Dean of Instruction, who was serving
as acting President of the College at the time of his death,
March 25, 1966.
— Corporal Gary Leslie Norman, a former student at Edin
boro State College, killed in action in Vietnam, December
18,1967.
— Dr. L. W. VariLaningham who served the College as Direc
tor of Student Teaching and Placement from 1949 until his
death, December 2, 1967.

PROGRAM NOTES
THE CEREMONIAL MACE

and master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke
for the bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and fea
tures long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master gown is
designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long
with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away. The
arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the
doctor degree is made of wool, serge or silk with an open front
faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell
shaped with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the
discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is
carried at the head of the academic procession by the College
Marshal, Dr. Jack B. Hetrick. A gift of the Alumni Association,
the Mace was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman, formerly of the Art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel.
It was first used at the inauguration of President Chester T.
McNerney. The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a
sterling silver sphere studded with cone-shaped rubies. The
neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with
silver fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls mounted on cups encircle the
top of the shaft. Discs of silver interspersed with rosewood
compose the shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken
cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver to
end in a small globe.

HOOD
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the
hood. It is usually worn only for the master and doctor de
grees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and
has distinguished panels. The college or the university granting
the degree is indicated by the color of coloring of the hood
lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which
the degree was granted.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major
components of the academic dress, are a ceremonial inheri
tance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and
twelfth centuries, where dress was the outward sign of privi
lege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those par
ticipating in today s academic processional symbolizes the lev
el of their academic attainment and the institution they at
tended.

CAP
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of
the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate and master
degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The
tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Under
graduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the
moment the degree is conferred by the president.

GOWN
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain univer
sities have authorized the use of colored gowns. The bachelor

ALMA MATER
Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater Glorious,
Fresh Wreaths we bring to bind Thy brow
Trials have past and Thou hast stood victorious
Never fairer never statelier than now,
O Edinboro, Edinboro
Ever praising Thee in song
While class speeds class as swift years pass
To Thee our hearts belong.
