Because of the demand to meet a deadline to print this program and the short period of time
between the end of classes, review of all academic programs, delays caused by such factors as
illness of some students and evaluation by the Office of Academic Affairs, the College does
not claim the preceding fist of degree candidates is absolutely accurate. Students are granted
degrees only if they meet all academic and financial requirements.
HONORS GROUP

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The Ceremonial Mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of
the academic procession by the College Marshal, Mrs. Elsie Earlley. The Mace, a gift
of the Alumni Association, was designed and executed by Dr. Seymour Blinderman,
formerly of the Art faculty, and Mr. Henry Katzwinkel. The Mace was first used at the
inauguration of President Chester T. McNerney.
The Mace, twenty-seven inches high, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded by
cone-shaped rubies. The neck of the Mace is inlaid with rosewood, alternated with silver
fleur-de-lis. Cultured pearls mounted on cups encircle the top of the shaft. Discs of silver
interspersed with rosewood compose the shaft which ends with tip-casted silver. Sunken
cultured pearls encircle a rounded cone with textured silver to end in a small globe.
PROGRAM NOTES
MRS. ELSIE EARLLEY
The College Marshal
Carrying the Ceremonial Mace and leading the ranks of the academic procession as
College Marshal today is Mrs. Elsie Earlley, Director of Early Childhood Programs at
Edinboro State College. She has been involved in the Elementary Education Program at
Edinboro where she has been a member of the faculty for the past eight years. In
addition to directing the Early Childhood Programs, Mrs. Earlley also teaches
elementary education courses.
An active contributor in the area of early childhood education, Mrs. Earlley is
currently involved in publishing early childhood materials and is the author of six
A.I.M.S. (An Instructional Manipulative Series) kits published by Continental Press.
She is also an active consultant on individualized instruction for children.
Prior to coming to Edinboro in 1968, Mrs. Earlley was a member of the Millcreek
School System for eighteen years where she served as a teacher, reading supervisor,
elementary supervisor and assistant to the Superintendent of Millcreek Schools. She
served six years on the Millcreek Board of Education and is past president of that board.
Among the numerous professional organizations of which she is a member include the
National Association for Education of the Young Child, the National Council for
Teaching of Education, the National Reading Association, the National Education
Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. She is also a member of
Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary education fraternity.
Mrs. Earlley received her Principal’s Certificate from Penn State University in 1962
after obtaining her Master’s degree from Allegheny College in 1955 and earned a B.S.
degree from Edinboro in 1953.
Mrs. Earlley was the wife of Dr. Harry Earlley, who served as Dean of Academic
Affairs and was former Acting President of Edinboro State College.
A current resident of Erie, she has three children in the immediate vicinity who
pursued careers in the teaching profession. A daughter, Laura Farnham, a former
French teacher, lives in nearby Fairview, while another daughter, Cathryn Snyder, a
former reading specialist, now resides in Lake City. Her son. Dr. Jack Culbertson, is
head of the Psychology Department at Edinboro State College. She also has a
stepdaughter, Nancy Scher, who teaches kindergarten in Penn Yan, New York.
Today marks the beginning of Mrs. Earlley’s retirement and she plans on spending
full-time with her publisher, while also providing consultation work.

Your days at Edinboro are bound to influence your future and your future is bound to
reflect on Edinboro. In effect, then, your association with the College is a continuing one.
The Alumni Association is always here to serve you, just as it is also here to serve the
College and its objectives through you.
As you grow through the years, the Association and the College pledge to support your

contemporary means which have been inspired by the recipient of this certificate.”
Dr. Dreyfus was appointed President of Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point, on
October 2, 1967, after serving as Director of Television and Professor of Speech at the

Mrs. James Fosdick.
PROGRAM NOTES
Academic Vestments
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic
dress, are a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and
twelfth centuries, where dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The
academic dress worn by those participating in today’s academic processional symbolizes
the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized
the use of colored gowns. The bachelor and master gowns are fashioned from black serge.
The yoke for the bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing
and pointed sleeves. The master gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves
are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away. The arms protrude
through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor degree is made of wool, serge, or silk
with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped
with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate
was obtained.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn
only for the master’s and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the
master’s hood and has distinguished panels. The college or the university granting the
degree is indicated by the color or coloring of the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood
indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is
black for the baccalaureate and master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of
the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear
the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is conferred by the
president.
MEMORIAL FOUNDATIONS GIFTS
“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the
grandest of all sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the
minds of men, where their glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion
comes by. For the whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not
graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on far away, without visible symbol,
woven into the stuff of other men’s lives.” — Thucydides

ary education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los
Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach, California,
established the gift.
Vlahakis Award, January 1972
Each year a $300 scholarship award is made available to a student of Edinboro State

lished by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K.
Vlahakis, and two sons, Walter and William.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Each year the Chess Club offers a prize for active student members. The award is
based upon academic standing and United States Chess Federation ratings. The Chess
Club Scholarship is funded through monies earned from sponsoring chess competition

Morrison Fund also has provisions for the acquisition of rare books for the College
Library.

College, both as a graduate and an alumnus; and we of the Alumni Association welcome you.
Your days at Edinboro are bound to influence your future and your future is bound to reflect on

PROGRAM NOTES
MEMORIAL FOUNDATIONS GIFTS
Academic Vestments
“They received, each for his own memory, praise that grows not old, and with it the grandest of all
sepulchres, not that in which their mortal bones are laid, but a home in the minds of men, where their
glory remains fresh to stir to speech or action as the occasion comes by. For the whole earth is the
sepulchre of famous men; and their story is not graven only on stone over the native earth, but lives on
far away, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men’s hves.”—Thucydides
The gown, the cap and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress
was the outward sign of privilege and responsibUity. The academic dress worn by those participating in
today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they
attended.
AMSCO Founders Memorial Fund Scholarships
The trustees of the American Sterilizer Company Founders Memorial Fund make three awards
available for outstanding students who have graduated from Erie County high schools.
Jack Finegan, April 1969
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of
colored gowns. The bachelor and master gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the
bachelor gown is designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master
gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part
has an arc cut away. The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor degree is
made of wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and
bell-shaped with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was
obtained.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male English student who
shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make mankind aware of the needs of his
fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire to make the world a better place in which to live.
This award was estabUshed in memory of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State
College.
Mildred Fomess Memorial Loan for Library Science Students
Miss Forness held a position at the College from 1922 until her retirement in 1969. During that time
she served in many capacities, including head of the Library and head of the Library Science depart
ment. Her relatives and friends have contributed to establish loans for hbrary science students.
Lois Caldwell North, Class of 1886
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the
master’s and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distin
guished panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color or coloring of
the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the
baccalaureate and master degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the
doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until
the moment the degree is conferred by the president.

Two $100 annual scholarships have been endowed in memory of Mrs. Lois Caldwell North by her
daughter, Eleanor North of State College, Pa. The awards are made each year to students who plan to
enter the ministry upon completion of their education.
Helen Sabin Reed, October 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen Sabin Reed, a
member of the education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a specialist in the reading field, the
yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an elementary education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of
Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long
Beach, California, established the gift.
Vlahakis Award, January 1972
Each year a $300 scholarship award is made available to a student of Edinboro State College who is
majoring or planning to major in chemistry. The award has been established by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis of
Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K. Vlahakis, and two sons, Walter and William.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the Class of 1976! Today you have obtained a two-fold status with

Association welcome you.
Your days at Edinboro are bound to influence your future and your future is bound to
reflect on Edinboro. In effect, then, your association with the College is a continuing one.
The Alumni Association is always here to serve you, just as it is also here to serve the
College and its objectives through you.
As you grow through the years, the Association and the College pledge to support your

feature the conferral of almost 700 graduate and undergraduate degrees.
For his outstanding educational accomplishments in the area of communications. Dr.
Dreyfus will also be honored today by receiving a distinguished Certificate of Merit
which reads “In recognition of profound commitment applied with great dignity and

contemporary means which have been inspired by the recipient of this certificate.”
Dr. Dreyfus was appointed President of Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point, on
October 2, 1967, after serving as Director of Television and Professor of Speech at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since his appointment, he has continuously

Who in America” and “Who’s Who in the World.”
Dr. Dreyfus and his wife, Joyce, are the parents of two children, Lee Sherman, Jr. and
AMSCO Founders Memorial Fund Scholarships
The trustees of the American Sterilizer Company Founders Memorial Fund make
three awards available for outstanding students who have graduated from Erie County
high schools.
Jack Finegan, April 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Finegan provide a $50 annual award to an outstanding male
English student who shows a tendency to write prose or poetry that is intended to make
mankind aware of the needs of his fellow-man and that places an emphasis on the desire
to make the world a better place in which to live. This award was established in memory
of their son. Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State College.
Mildred Forness Memorial Loan for Library Science Students
Miss Forness held a position at the College from 1922 until her retirement in 1969.
During that time she served in many capacities, including head of the Library and head

year to students who plan to enter the ministry upon completion of their education.
Helen Sabin Reed, October 1966
A $10,000 endowment was given to Edinboro State College in memory of Mrs. Helen
Sabin Reed, a member of the education faculty since 1961. Because Mrs. Reed was a
specialist in the reading field, the yearly $500 scholarship will be awarded to an element
ary education major. Mrs. Theo Sabin Meyer of Erie; Mrs. Mildred Sabin Young, Los
Angeles, California, sisters; and a brother, Robert W. Sabin, Long Beach, California,
established the gift.
Vlahakis Award, January 1972
Each year a $300 scholarship award is made available to a student of Edinboro State
College who is majoring or planning to major in chemistry. The award has been estab
lished by Mrs. Thekla Vlahakis of Pittsburgh in memory of her late husband, George K.
Vlahakis, and two sons, Walter and William.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Chess Club Scholarship
Each year the Chess Club offers a prize for active student members. The award is
based upon academic standing and United States Chess Federation ratings. The Chess
Club Scholarship is funded through monies earned from sponsoring chess competition
on the college campus.
FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM
Programs of financial assistance and the low cost of attending Edinboro State
College have made higher education a reality for most students possessing the desire
and ability to achieve such a goal.
Over $5,400,000 in financial assistance has been received by students at Edinboro
State College during the 1975-1976 academic year through the following programs:
The Bruce Manville Morrison Fund
The fund was established by the estate of the late Bruce Manville Morrison to pro
vide financial support for Edinboro State College graduate students. Awards are made
on a continuing basis to graduate students who can document financial need. The
Morrison Fund also has provisions for the acquisition of rare books for the College
Library.
Russian Language and Area Study Scholarships
Eight Russian Language and Area Study Scholarships were granted this year to
promising high school seniors desiring to combine a major in Russian with a secondary
specialization in either Economics, Business, Accounting, or Engineering. This pro

The academic dress worn by those participating in
today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they
attended.

Jack Finegan, a former student at Edinboro State
College.

ALMA MATER
Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater Glorious,
Fresh Wreaths we bring to bind Thy brow
Trials have past and Thou hast stood victorious
Never fairer never statelier than now,
O Edinboro, Edinboro
Ever praising Thee in song
While class speeds class as swift years pass
To Thee our hearts belong.
