Reception, immediately following the program, in Crawford Gymnasium.
THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS
One hundred years ago, almost to the day, some public-minded citizens of Northwest Pennsylvania participated in the dedication at Edinboro of a private academy for the training of teachers. Four years later,
the academy was chartered by the Commonwealth as Pennsylvania's
second normal school.
Providing educational opportunities for youth has always been a
p,,rt of the Pennsylvania tradition . .Even as far back as 1683, the Second
Assembly saw to it that children should be "instructed in reading and
writing, and be taught some useful trade or skill."
It is indeed fitting that 1857 should be the year when the Edinboro
Normal School, as it was then called, inaugurated its long years of service
to education. That year is memorable in the annals of education, both in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and in the nation as a whole. It was in
1857 that the General Assembly of Pennsylvania created a Department of
Public lntsruction. It was in 1857, too, that the National Education Association had its beginning. During the last century, Edinboro State Teachers
College has played an integral role in the remarkable progress which has occurred in education. Purchased by the Commonwealth in H)l4, the College began to offer a four-year curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1g26. In 1957, during its one hundreth year of service,
it begins its offering of a Master's degree in Elementary Education.
The founders of the Edinboro State T eachers,College built well, indeed. Music Hall, the earliest structure on this campus, yet stands sound
and whole. The steady growth of the institution during the last one hundred years has been reflected in the constant extension of the grounds
and facilities. The original acre has grown to 176 acres, and plans for future growth provide for the construction of an additional men's dormitory,
a library building, a dining room, a student union building, and two women's dormitories.
During the last one hundred years, the curriculum at Edinboro has
undergone some radical changes, Courses such as "Sallust and Ovid,"
in Latin, have been replaced by courses such as '·Science in Modern
Civilization.'' The curriculum will continue to change. But the basic purpose of the College has not changed. Edinboro State Teachers College
reflects with pride that it has fostered generations of teachers whose goal
it has been to aid youth in the fulfillment of their personal and civic potentialities.
