GRADUATE STUDENT ADDRESS
By Matthew Bresnahan
Master of Arts, Communication Studies

Good Afternoon. Thank you to President Werner, Provost Hannan, distinguished Council of
Trustees, faculty, family, friends and, of course, the class of 2016. The day has finally come upon us,
the graduate commencement ceremony. Congratulations to the class of 2016. We did it!
I am beyond honored to be standing, well, sitting here before you as the representative for the
class of 2016 in our penultimate moment. When I was chosen to be the speaker, I was humbled,
honored and terrified all at the same time.Try as I might when 1 put pen to paper, I was frozen in
fear. 'What if I'm not good enough? My speech has to be perfect for this special moment,' I thought.
Perfect or not, 1 want you to take away three things from this speech:Take a chance on yourself,
failure and frustration are temporary mindsets, not crutches; and realize that it is not about you,
it's about people.
First, take a chance on yourself Though we passed through the rigors of higher education
at least once with an undergraduate degree, graduate school has a way of making a person
feel inadequate.
In graduate school, much as in life, everybody has challenges and struggles they must overcome
if they want to succeed. Whether the challenge is self-doubt, being stuck in a library for hours on
end to get that last paper written, or just dealing with difficult people and situations, it is tough,
daunting, but not insurmountable.Take a chance on yourself
Second failure and frustration are temporary mindsets, not crutches. As we graduate from
Edinboro University today, most of us have big plans in mind, but we may not know how to carry
them out yet. The fear of not knowing what lies ahead is unsettling, but also exciting. Fear of failure
freezes us in our tracks. However, we cannot let fear of the future be debilitating in the present.
We must use our failures as learning experiences. Failure and frustration might seem permanent
in the moment, but they are fleeting. Every time we fall, we must get right back up and fight to
the end. Know that you may fail and that you will be frustrated. Let the uneasiness and discomfort
drive you to step outside your comfort zone. Never give up.
Third, it is not about you, it's about people. It is easy to become bogged down in what s going
on in your life. It's easy to make yourself the center of a singular focus, but I learned a powerfu
lesson in life: It's about people, not me.
Challenges and hardships might linger, but a support system will help you weather the storm.
I would not be here today if not for my support system, starting with my parents. They have
nurtured and believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself We all appreciate the support
of our family and friends who helped us along the way. I am also grateful to my campus media
family. I am not alone, and neither are any members of the class of 2016.
At Edinboro, we are family. We push and encourage each other to keep improving and keep
striving. As you leave here today, surround yourself with positive people. You might be surprised
by the confidence they instill and what you can accomplish.
In the face of adversity, we are tested, but do not run from adversity. Chase it. Learn from it.
Grow, adapt and keep striving to be better. Congratulations.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic procession
by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed by Professor
Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department. It was first used
at the inauguration of Edinboro State College by President Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.

*-Students who completed degree requirements during Winter 2015.
While every effort is made to ensure accuracy in this Commencement program, printing deadlines may result in omission
of some names and use of names ofpersons not completing graduation requirements as intended. This printed program,
therefore, should not be used to determine a student’s academic or degree status. The University’s official registry for
conferral of degrees is the student’s permanent academic record, maintained by the office of Records and Registration.

The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular cabochon
rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver relief fleur-de-lis
design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar. The shaft of the mace
is composed of Brazilian rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated by a
cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing curricula. The rib-like cone form is
terminated by a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying, stone
setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Louis C. Cole Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.

The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May
1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling
silver medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a
Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the
background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge. On the
reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an
interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross
of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated
and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of President Frank
G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the school’s status
as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Edinboro University School of Education Candidate Quality and Dispositions and Middle and Secondary
Education and Education Leadership Department Curriculum Committees.
He has presented at 10 major conferences in the past seven years and has published numerous articles for the
Pennsylvania Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Pennsylvania Elementary and Secondary
School Principals, the American School Board Journal, and the Mid-Atlantic Education Review. He was a
contributing author for the textbook “Successful Grant Writing for School Leaders” by Kenneth Henson.

Dr. Walker came to Edinboro from the Rochester Institute of
Technology (RIT), where he served as Dean of the College of Applied
Science and Technology since 2008. In his role as Dean, he successfully
led the college in the development and completion of a strategic
plan that included bringing all units within the college into fiscal
sustainability, growth of college enrollments and academic program
offerings, increasing the doctoral attainment of faculty members from
33% to 95+%, formation or reformation of two schools and multiple
centers and departments, conversion from academic quarters to
semesters, replacement of the institution-wide information system, and renovation of general education,
all while sustaining a complex set of international operations. He also was co-leader of the institute-wide
efforts in enhancing student success, on-time graduation, and overall student retention.
Dr. Walker began his career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 1995.
USM, a member of the University of Maine System (UMS), is a public, regional, comprehensive university
with satellite campuses located throughout the state. Dr. Walker progressed through all of the academic
ranks, earned tenure, and assumed multiple leadership positions at the campus level, within all of the
satellite campuses, and within the UMS, particularly in academic programming, shared governance,
and as a liaison for collective bargaining.
Dr. Walker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology and a Master of Business
Administration at California State University Fresno. He earned a Master of Engineering in Industrial
and Systems Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Education and Technology from
Iowa State University. He has completed 14 professional certifications administered by the American
Society of Quality and has written 13 major books in the field of quality and reliability engineering.
Additionally, Dr. Walker spent nine years in the U.S. Navy, working throughout the United States, Asia,
Africa, and Australia in airborne electronics systems (avionics). He concluded his U.S. Naval career as an
information systems administrator before being honorably discharged in 1992.
President Walker is married to Dr. Susan H. Newman, an audiologist who serves children and young adults.
They have five adult and school-age children and enjoy outdoor activities such as walking/hiking, bicycling,
kayaking, and skiing.

RECESSIONAL

Edinboro University Pipes and Drums

Leading the academic procession and representing his
faculty colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s
Undergraduate Commencement is Dietrich Wegner of Edinboro
University’s Art Department.
Professor Wegner’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the
central role that faculty play in the academic and personal development
of Edinboro University students.
A Maryland Institute College of Art graduate with a Bachelor of Fine
Arts in Sculpture in 2001, he continued his education with a Master of
Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from The Ohio State University in 2003.
Professor Wegner has worked as an internationally exhibited artist for more than 20 years.
Dietrich Wegner was born in Adelaide, Australia, to parents who worked for an organization doing
global social work similar to the Peace Corps. His parents’ work brought his family to Egypt and then
Houston, Texas. He now resides in Edinboro, where he has a photography and sculpture studio and teaches
courses throughout Edinboro’s undergraduate and graduate art program. His artworks turn our perception
of reality upside down, explore our notions of contentment and security, and provoke us to consider how our
identities evolve and how we declare them.
Professor Wegner has exhibited widely throughout Europe and North America, including Banksy’s
Dismaland in England, as well as exhibitions at the Leopold Museum in Vienna, De Meerse in the
Netherlands, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Athens Institute of Contemporary Art, the Columbus Museum of
Art, the Bellevue Arts Museum in Seattle, and Diverse Works Art Space in Houston. He frequently exhibits
in international art fairs in Basel, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. His work has been discussed and
reviewed on CNN and the BBC, in Sculpture Magazine, Art Papers, Eikon International Magazine of
Photography and New Media, Art Ltd, LA Weekly, and Art Map, as well as in numerous college art and
sociology textbooks. Wegner was awarded an Artist Fellowship by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His
work is found in over 30 art collections in five countries. He is represented by the Carrie Secrist Gallery in
Chicago and the Robert Berman Gallery in Los Angeles.
Dietrich Wegner’s career as an educator and his experiences as an artist have served his students,
colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. He exemplifies the dedication and
commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

The audience is asked to stand during the Processional and Recessional
and to join in the singing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

RECESSIONAL

Edinboro University Pipes and Drums

Leading the academic procession and representing her faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Graduate
Commencement is Dr. Charlotte J. Molrine, a professor in the Speech,
Language, and Hearing Department at Edinboro University.
Dr. Molrine’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the central
role that faculty play in the academic and personal development of
Edinboro University students.
Professor Molrine in 1978 received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary
Studies from Stephens College, which included one year of off-campus
study at Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio de Janeiro. In 1982,
she completed a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology at what was then Edinboro State College and
went on to be awarded a Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology at Kent State University in 1998.
Dr. Molrine joined the Speech, Language, and Hearing Department in 1988 after working as a speechlanguage pathologist with patients with acquired brain injury. She is the former graduate Speech-Language
Pathology program head (2001-2012) and chair of the department (2006-2012). She served as the vice
president for Government Relations (2006-2008) and the president (2009) of the Pennsylvania Speech
Language Hearing Association and was instrumental in pursuing legislation to update the profession’s
licensure act and in working with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to create the educational
Specialist in Speech Language Pathology Certification for school-based speech-language providers.
In recognition of these accomplishments, she was recognized by the Pennsylvania Speech Language
Hearing Association with Honors of the Association in 2015.
In 2012-13, she was a Fulbright Teaching and Research Scholar at the University of the West Indies,
St. Augustine, Trinidad, where she successfully launched the first graduate Speech-Language Pathology
program in the Caribbean. She continues to help students and colleagues from the Caribbean further
their education and delivery of speech-language pathology services to populations with unmet needs.
Her interest in global relations, research and service outreach stems from living, working and traveling
in several countries, including Brazil, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand
and Bonaire. She hosted a service-learning trip to Peru in 2016 for students in the Speech and Hearing
Sciences program. She has reported on cross-cultural perceptions of artificial nutrition and hydration at
end of life. Her current research focuses on the cognitive-communicative deficits experienced by persons
with Lyme disease.
Dr. Molrine is married and has three children. She enjoys fly-fishing, quilting and gardening.
Professor Molrine’s years of experience as an educator and scholar define a professional career that
has impacted the lives of countless students, colleagues and the entire University community with
distinction. She exemplifies the dedication and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence
and to our students’ success.

The audience is asked to stand during the Processional and to join in the singing of the National Anthem.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER

Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and family.
Members of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that they
do not disrupt the program or interfere with the special moments of others. Commencement is our most
important occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the University community and to those
who are being honored.

1

Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a diploma.
To avoid congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family members refrain
from approaching the platform to take pictures.
Thank you for your cooperation. We hope that you will enjoy the ceremony and celebrate the achievements
of our students.
