COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr.
Robert P. Casey, Jr. is Pennsylvania’s senior senator in the United States
Senate and previously served eight years as Pennsylvania Auditor General
and two years as state Treasurer. A Democrat, Casey was elected to the U.S.
Senate in 2006 and re-elected in 2012 - receiving more total votes than
any U.S. Senate candidate in Pennsylvania history.
He currently serves as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Fiscal
Responsibility and Economic Growth in the Finance Committee and as
Chair of the Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety on the
Health Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. He also is a
member of the Joint Economic Committee, the Agriculture Committee,
the Special Committee on Aging and the National Security Working Group.
The Senator is the former Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations
Subcommittee overseeing the Middle East, and is a leader in promoting nuclear security and combating the threat
posed by terrorists obtaining nuclear material.
A nationally recognized advocate for children. Senator Casey has been honored with numerous awards for his work
benefiting children, including the Champion for Children Award from First Focus, Children’s Champion Award
from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young
Children (DVAEYC) Champion for Young Children Award.
Amid partisan gridlock in Washington, the Senator has amassed a long list of significant accomplishments on
behalf of Pennsylvanians. He secured passage of a landmark law to help the families of children with disabilities
save for their long-term care through tax-advantaged, 529-style savings accounts. The Senator also successfully
pushed into law measures that bolstered children’s hospitals throughout the state, improved the emergency
medical services provided to children and strengthened programs to support individuals living with traumatic
brain injuries.

Pennsylvania. He pressed for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, for justice for coal miners being
denied black lung claims and for improvements to the ways colleges are required to report instances of sexual
violence on campus.
Born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Senator Casey graduated from The College of the Holy Cross in 1982
and spent the following year teaching fifth grade and coaching eighth-grade basketball in inner-city Philadelphia
for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He received his law degree from Catholic University in 1988 and entered the
practice of law in Scranton.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic procession
by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed by Professor
Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department. It was first
used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College by President Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver
relief fleur-de-lis design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar.
The shaft of the mace is composed of Brazilian rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings.
The mace is terminated by a cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing
curricula. The rib-like cone form is terminated by a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May
1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling
silver medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a
Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the
background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge. On the
reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an
interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross
of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated
and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of President Frank
G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the school’s status
as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.

The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,

Hood

stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and family.
Members of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that they
do not disrupt the program or interfere with the special moments of others. Commencement is our most
important occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the university community and to those
who are being honored.
Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a diploma. To avoid
congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family members refrain from approaching
the platform to take pictures.
Thank you for your cooperation. We hope that you will enjoy the ceremony and celebrate the achievements
of our students.
Students and their families are encouraged to share their best Commencement photos and shout out their
best wishes on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #boroUgrad.

The Campus Bookstore, located on the lower level of the Frank G. Pogue Student Center, will be open today
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Commencement ceremony will be filmed and streamed via the Internet at edinboro.tv. Commencement

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Dr. Hugo and Alicia Keim
Hugo A. Keim, M.D., and his wife, Alicia B. Keim, co-founders of the
ChairScholars Foundation, established the Foundation 25 years ago to
provide scholarships for college and vocational training to low-income
students with severe physical disabilities. Guided by the Keims’ belief
and motto that “no physical impairment should deter a motivated
mind,” the Foundation has provided scholarships to 959 students
nationwide.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FACULTY MARSHALS
Ms. Diane Crandall - Art
Dr. Charles Cross - Middle and Secondary Education, and Educational Leadership
Dr. John Cussen - English and Philosophy
Dr. Karen Eisenhart - Geosciences
Dr. Jean Faieta - Counseling, School Psychology and Special Education
Dr. Ken Felker - Health and Physical Education
Dr. Shuang Feng - Business and Economics
Dr. Melissa Gibson - Communication Studies
Dr. Qun Gu - Chemistry

As a child. Dr. Keim suffered a traumatic eye injury that resulted in the
loss of vision in that eye. Later, he was forced to have the eye removed
while in medical school. He persevered despite these tremendous odds
to become Chief of Spinal Surgery at Columbia Presb)derian Medical
Center for 29 years. His future wife, Alicia, came to him as a patient,
plagued with a severe curvature of the spine. In 1985 the two were married.

Dr. Karim Hossain - Physics and Technology
Dr. Patrick Jones - Music and Theatre
Dr. Peter McLaughlin - Psychology
Dr. Mary Jo Melvin - Early Childhood and Reading
Dr. Elvage Murphy - Political Science and Criminal Justice
Ms. Audra Neumann - Academic Support and Student Affairs

During his tenure as Chief of Spinal Surgery, Dr. Keim witnessed the struggles of many disabled young
people. The Keims’ collective experiences made them more aware of the obstacles that exist for people with
disabilities to achieve success. Having both overcome physical challenges of their own, they wanted to help.
The Keims began by sending two students who were in wheelchairs to college. From that start they created
a scholarship program for Florida students that provides full in-state tuition for four years of college and a
program for students nationwide that provides scholarship awards of up to $30,000 to students attending
Edinboro University or the University of Tampa in Florida.

Dr. Anne Quinn - Mathematics and Computer Science
Dr. Ronald Raymond - Journalism and Public Relations
Mr. Umeme Sababu - History, Anthropology and World Languages
Dr. Roy Shinn - Speech, Language and Hearing
Dr. Margaret Smith - Social Work
Dr. Ulf Sorhannus - Biology and Health Services
Dr. Amy Weschler - Nursing
Mr. John Widner - Baron-Forness Library

The ChairScholars Foundation Scholarships at Edinboro were established in 2014 with a gift of $500,000
to provide students with physical challenges the financial support to educate and develop vocational skills
necessary to achieve their full potential through higher education. These transformational scholarships
inspire and motivate students and establish the foundation for their success in and out of the classroom.

Dr. Lee Williams - Sociology

Edinboro University is indeed fortunate to count Dr. Hugo and Alicia Keim as friends and supporters.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE

• English as a Second Language (MEd)

• Online Instruction (MEd)

The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic procession
by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed by Professor
Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department. It was first
used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College President Chester T.

*DNP and MSN are programs in consortium with Ciarion University

The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting and lost wax centrifugal casting.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Louis C. Cole Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.

Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS

Provost and Vice Presidentfor Academic Ajfairs

WELCOME

The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

MACE BEARER
Dr. Rosemary Omniewski
Leading the academic procession and representing her faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Graduate
Commencement is Dr. Rosemary Omniewski, who recently retired
after 22 years as a professor in the Early Childhood and Reading
Department at Edinboro University.
Dr. Omniewski’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the central
role that faculty play in the academic and personal development of
Edinboro University students.
After earning a Bachelor of Music Education at Temple University
in 1971, Dr. Omniewski continued her education with a Master of Education in Music from Edinboro
State College in 1980. She received her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Music Education from Kent State
University in 1999. She began her teaching career in 1971 as an elementary school music teacher in the
Erie School District, and also taught music at General McLane School District’s McKean Elementary
School from 1990 to 1993.
Dr. Omniewski joined Edinboro University’s Department of Early Childhood and Reading as an assistant
professor in 1993. Her areas of research include arts infusion, which is the integration of the arts into the
math and language arts curricula to increase student performance and creativity. Until her retirement
in August 2015, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood education and
child development.
Since 2001, Professor Omniewski has been involved in writing more than $5 million in government-funded
Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grants. Most recently, she assisted Erie Arts
& Culture, along with Union City, Crawford Central and Penncrest school districts, in applying for and
receiving $1.2 million. Her work in the area of arts infusion inspired the new Arts Infusion Certificate
that will be offered by Edinboro University for the first time in summer 2016.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and family.
Members of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that they
do not disrupt the program or interfere with the special moments of others. Commencement is our most
important occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the University community and to those
who are being honored.

^

Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a diploma. To avoid
congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family members refrain from approaching
the platform to take pictures.
