roles that represent the University’s responsiveness to the evolving needs of the broader community.
Additionally she is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Committee on
Policies and Purposes and actively seeks to influence policy to advance opportunities for all who wish to
access higher education.

President Wollman is married to Dr. Dan L. King, Executive Director of the American Association of
University Administrators, a national professional organization. She has two daughters: Sara Bonilla, 23,
a graduate of Wesleyan University and currently a graduate student at Lesley University, and Rosa Bonilla, 18,
a freshman at Harvard University.

Edinboro University Pipes and Drums

Leading the academic procession and representing his faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Undergraduate
Commencement is Dr. Peter van den Honert of Edinboro University’s
Music Department.
Dr. van den Honert’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the
central role that faculty play in the academic and personal development
of Edinboro University students.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Grinnell College in 1972,
Professor van den Honert continued his education with a Master of
Science in Choral Music Education from the University of Illinois
in 1973 and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from
University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 1985. He taught music at the middle school and
high school levels in addition to his career in higher education, which began at Kansas Wesleyan University.
Professor van den Honert has been Director of Choral Activities at Edinboro University since his
appointment in 1990 and is retiring this spring at the rank of tenured full professor. He conducts the
University Singers and University Chorale and teaches choral conducting and choral arranging. He has
a special interest in New England folk songs, and has published several choral arrangements of them.
A past member of the American Choral Directors Association-Pennsylvania board of directors. Dr. van den
Honert is listed in Who’s Who among American Educators, Who’s Who in Collegiate Faculty, and received a
Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Special Citation for Excellence in Teaching. His additional honors
and awards include Special Citation of Excellence from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and
two recognitions by the Dr. Robert C. Weber Honors Program for excellence in teaching.
He is active as an adjudicator and clinician, and has served as an honor festival guest conductor in several states.
Since 1993, he has served as host of Music of Faith, a weekly radio show on regional NPR affiliate WQLN-FM.
Over the course of his career Professor van den Honert also has led several trips to Europe, including concert
tours; conducted in Germany; organized choral events on campus, including a master class with the Netherlands
Chamber Choir and a public concert by the Sea Chanters (the United States Navy choir); and published in
The Choral Journal, the journal of the American Choral Directors Association. His choral students have been
chosen to participate in three national honor choirs sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association
(ACDA), and the University Singers and Chorale have released four CDs under his leadership.
He lives near Erie with his wife, musician Nancy van den Honert.
Professor van den Honert’s 40-year career as an educator and his experiences as a conductor, and arranger
have served his students, colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. He exemplifies
the dedication and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

The audience is asked to stand during the Processional and Recessional
and to join in the singing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FACULTY MARSHALS

The Honorable Thomas J. Ridge

Dr. John Ashley - Biology and Health Services

Thomas J. Ridge was twice elected governor of Pennsylvania and served as
the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after being
called to service by President George W. Bush following the tragic terrorist
attacks on September ii, 2001. He also is a former six-term congressman
and a Vietnam veteran.
Born to a family of modest means in Pittsburgh’s Steel Valley, Secretary
Ridge was raised in a working-class family in veterans’ public housing in
Erie, Pennsylvania. After attending Catholic grade school and high school,
he earned an academic scholarship to Harvard University and graduated
with honors with a bachelor’s degree in government studies in 1967.
Following his first year of study at Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted
into the U.S. Army and served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam from
1968-70, earning the Bronze Star for Valor, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
After returning from service, he completed his law degree in 1972 and went into private practice before becoming
Assistant District Attorney in Erie County.

Tom Ridge began his call to public service by being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. He earned
overwhelming re-election five times. As a member of the House Veteran’s Affairs Committee, Congressman Ridge
traveled to Vietnam to conduct negotiations involving the full accounting of American prisoners of war and service
members missing in action.

First elected Pennsylvania governor in 1994 and re-elected in 1998, he led the passage of 40 new anti-crime laws,
created the Keystone Opportunity Zone to provide incentives for businesses to locate in distressed communities,
and won passage of “Growing Greener” to make Pennsylvania’s largest environmental investment ever, nearly
$650 million.

As governor, he also was passionate about the role of education in securing a bright future for Pennsylvanians.
His initiatives included CyberStart, a first-of-its-kind program to bring Internet-based learning to day-care
centers in rural and urban areas; the award-winning Link to Learn initiative to bring K-12 classrooms into the 2i®‘
century; and SciTech Scholars, a program designed to support Pennsylvanians attain college degrees in emerging
technology fields.
Following the 9/11 tragedy, Tom Ridge became the first Assistant to the President for the White House Office of
Homeland Security and on January 24, 2003, assumed leadership of the new Department of Homeland Security.
The creation of the country’s 15* Cabinet Department marked the largest reorganization of government since the
Truman administration and another call to service for the former soldier, congressman and governor.
After leaving government service in 2005, Secretary Ridge became president and CEO of Ridge Global, which helps
businesses and governments address risk management, global trade security, emergency preparedness and response,
crisis management and other needs. He also serves as a partner in the cyber-security firm Ridge Schmidt Cyber.
He and his wife, Michele, have two adult children.
Edinboro University is, indeed, fortunate to count Secretary Thomas J. Ridge as a friend.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic procession
by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed by Professor
Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Se)miour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department. It was first
used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College by President Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver
relief fleur-de-lis design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar.
The shaft of the mace is composed of Brazilian rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings.
The mace is terminated by a cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing
curricula. The rib-like cone form is terminated by a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May
1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling
silver medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a
Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the
background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge. On the
reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an
interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross
of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated
and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel, now retired, added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of
President Frank G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the
school’s status as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Goivn
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.
Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Leading the academic procession and representing his faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Graduate
Commencement is Dr. Douglas Puharic of Edinboro University’s
Mathematics and Computer Science Department.
As an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Puharic’s distinction
as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the central role the faculty play in the
academic and personal development of Edinboro students.
A graduate of DuBois Area High School, Dr. Puharic began his post­
secondary academic career in Clarion, Pennsylvania, where he earned a
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Clarion University in May 2000. He went on to earn a Master of Arts
in Mathematics and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics, both from Bowling Green State University of Ohio.
Dr. Puharic began teaching in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Edinboro University
in 2006. He has served as the President of the Edinboro University Senate, a body that focuses on updating
and revising University-wide policies, since 2011. In addition, he has been a member of the UniversityWide Curriculum Committee since 2010 and has served as the chair of the Courses and General Education
Assessment subcommittees (UWCC). The UWCC serves a major role in the development process for courses
and academic programs.
Professor Puharic has presented at a number of conferences, including the Allegheny Mountain Section of
the Mathematical Association of America; the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Mathematics
Association; and Emerging and Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Practices to Ensure
Student Success. His topics have included The Mathematics of Baseball, Using Yahtzee for Research, Course
Redesign - Reimagining How We Teach, The Poincare Half-Plane of Geometer’s Sketchpad, and Fullerenes
(Carbon Molecules).
In addition to his own scholarly work. Dr. Puharic has been the advisor and worked with students who have
presented their research in several ways to the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association
of America, the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators, and the
Youngstown State University Pi Mu Epsilon Conference.
He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics,
Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Mathematical Association of America, Society for
American Baseball Research, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Mathematics
Association. He serves as a peer reviewer for Mathematics Teacher, a journal published by the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Dr. Puharic’s experience as an educator, advisor and scholar defines a professional career that serves his
students, colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. He exemplifies the dedication
and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

Leading the academic procession and representing his faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Undergraduate
Commencement is Dr. Jim Roberts of Edinboro University’s Health
and Physical Education Department.
Dr. Roberts’ distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the central
role that faculty play in the academic and personal development of
Edinboro University students.
An Edinboro University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Health
and Physical Education in 1993, he continued his education with a
Master of Business Administration degree from Gannon University
in 1997 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Exercise Physiology from the
University of Pittsburgh in 2004. Professor Roberts has earned and maintains certification in Collaborative
Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) for Human Subjects, Protecting Human Research Participants, and
Health Fitness Instructor/Specialist from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was also
named a Fellow of the ACSM earlier this year.
Dr. Roberts is an Associate Professor and former chairperson of Edinboro’s Health and Physical Education
Department. He is Coordinator of the Human Performance Track and formerly served as Director of
the Human Performance Lab. He was named Faculty Member of the Year at the University’s Honors
Convocation this spring. Additional honors include recognition of his service by the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Chapter of the ACSM and multiple recognitions by the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance (PSAHPERD)
His teaching interests include health and wellness, exercise physiology, kinesiology and research in human
performance. His research interests include ergogenic acids, sport performance predictors, and body
composition. His publications include the forthcoming textbook Exercise Physiology: A Hybrid Approach
and research abstracts presented at national and international conferences.
Dr. Roberts lives in Warren, Pa. with his twins, Alexis and Trenton. An additional daughter, Chalaine,
lives in Pittsburgh.
Professor Roberts’ career as an educator and his experiences as a researcher, instructor and consultant have
served his students, colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. He exemplifies the
dedication and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

The audience is asked to stand during the Processional and Recessional
and to join in the singing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.

Betty Ferguson has earned national recognition for her award-winning
work as an advocate for forgiveness as a route to healing for victims of
violent crime. She is a counselor, mediator, workshop presenter and
inspirational speaker.

tragic death of her oldest daughter in 1975. Debbie Gama was 16 when
she was murdered. Her high school English teacher was later convicted
of the crime, and Mrs. Ferguson spent a decade consumed by grief and
anger that damaged her life and relationships. It was only when she
became convinced of the need to forgive the convicted killer and
visited him in prison that she was able to find peace and restore
purpose to her life.

That cathartic act led to volunteer service as a counselor and court advocate at the Erie County Rape Crisis
Center (now the Crime Victim Center of Erie County) and eventually full-time work in the agency’s Victim
Witness Services. In addition, she has been the Erie contact person for the international Parents of Murdered
Children organization for more than 20 years and is a long-time mediator for the Pennsylvania Office of the
Victim Advocate’s Mediation Program for Victims of Violent Crime.
Her story has been told numerous times in local and regional media as well as in Reader’s Digest, Good
Housekeeping and Hope Magazine. Mrs. Ferguson in 2005 was one of three finalists in “The Story of My
Life” Contest sponsored by ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America” and publisher Simon 8c Schuster, which
gave further national exposure to her cause. She received the Governor’s Victim Service Pathfinder Award
presented by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and was honored as one of the

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed
by Professor Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department.
It was first used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College President Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver
relief fleur-de-lis design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar,
symbolizing the thirteen state colleges of Pennsylvania. The shaft of the mace is composed of Brazilian
rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated by a cast sterling silver
finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing curricula. The rib-like cone form is terminated by

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION
The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May
1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling
silver medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a
Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the
background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge. On the
reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an
interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross
of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated
and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel, now retired, added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of
President Frank G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the
school’s status as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.

Hood
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

Leading the academic procession and representing her faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Graduate
Commencement is Dr. Susan H. Packard of Edinboro University’s
Counseling, School Psychology, and Special Education Department.
As a Professor of Counseling, Dr. Packard’s distinction as Mace Bearer
is symbolic of the central role the faculty play in the academic and
personal development of Edinboro students.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Edinboro
University in 1975, Professor Packard went on to earn a Master of Arts
in Rehabilitation Counseling from Edinboro in 1977, and a Doctor
of Philosophy in Counselor Education from the State University
of New York at Buffalo in 1994. She completed additional graduate work at Edinboro University and
Gwynedd-Mercy College, where she was an Associate Professor.
Dr. Packard began teaching at Edinboro University in 2001, and has been a full Professor since 2010. She is
Coordinator of the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling graduate program and serves on many University-wide
and departmental committees. In addition, she serves as an officer of the Executive Council of the Edinboro
University Chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF).
Among her credentials. Professor Packard is a licensed psychologist. Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC),
Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), and Master Addictions Counselor (MAC). She has extensive work
experience in the fields of addictions treatment, corrections, and community-based mental health.
Dr. Packard has presented at 9 separate conferences in the last 5 years and is the author or a co-author
of numerous published works. Her research has appeared in the Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin,
The Journal of Criminal Justice Research, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, and The Prison Journal,
among other refereed journals.
Professor Packard holds memberships in a wide variety of national and state-level professional organizations,
including the American Counseling Association (ACA), American Psychological Association (APA), American
Rehabilitation Counseling Association (ARCA), American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National
Rehabilitation Association (NRA), Pennsylvania Counseling Association (PCA), and the Pennsylvania
Psychological Association (PPA). Additionally, she is a member of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor
society for counselors-in-training, counselor educators, and professional counselors, and serves as Chapter
Faculty Advisor for the Epsilon Chi Chapter at Edinboro.
Dr. Packard’s experience as an educator, counselor and researcher defines a professional career that
serves her students, colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. She exemplifies
the dedication and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and family.
Members of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that they
do not disrupt the program or interfere with the special moments of others. Commencement is our most
important occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the University community and to those
who are being honored.
Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a diploma. To avoid
congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family members refrain from approaching
the platform to take pictures.
