where she served as Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to
that position, she served as Vice President for Academic Affairs
at Worcester State University and Dean of Education and Human
Development at Rhode Island College.

She also has become active in the community, accepting appointment to the Erie Regional Chamber
and Growth Partnership Board of Directors, the Hamot Health Foundation Board of Corporators,
and the United Way Erie Board of Directors. She also chairs the United Way’s Volunteer
Engagement Cabinet, among other roles that represent the University’s responsiveness to the
evolving needs of the broader community. Most recently, she accepted an invitation from state Sen.

MACE BEARER

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

Donald J. Renn

Dr. Muriel A. Howard

Leading the academic procession and representing his
faculty colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s
Undergraduate Commencement is Mr. Donald J. Renn of
Edinboro University’s Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Muriel A. Howard, president of the American Association of State
Colleges and Universities, has been selected to address the graduating
class at today’s Undergraduate Commencement ceremony.
Dr. Howard is being honored in this manner for her history of success
and accomplishment in higher education, her characteristics of
perseverance and using one’s abilities to achieve success, and her
advocacy for opportunity and diversity in public higher education.

As a 48-year member of the faculty, including 18 years as
department chairperson, Professor Renn’s distinction as Mace
Bearer is symbolic of the central role that faculty play in the
academic and personal development of Edinboro’s students.
Professor Renn earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics
from Waynesburg College, now Waynesburg University, in 1957 and a Master of Science in
Chemistry from Bucknell University in 1965. He completed additional graduate studies at the
University of Pittsburgh and the University of Delaware.
After beginning his teaching career as a high school chemistry teacher in Pawling, N.Y., Professor
Renn joined the faculty of what was then Edinboro State College in January 1965. He has
enjoyed the opportunity to teach the children and grandchildren of former students. Among the
memorable incidents in his long tenure at the University was the 1969 fire that destroyed Normal
Hall, which he and his family witnessed from their home across Normal Street.
Though organic chemistry is his specialty. Professor Renn taught several other specialties in
chemistry in the laboratory and classroom. For many years, he served as treasurer of the Erie
chapter of the American Chemical Society.
His community memberships include Oasis Lodge, No. 416, of Free and Accepted Masons, which
he served as secretary for most of his 20-year membership; the local chapter of the Sons of the
American Revolution, which he served as president for two years; and Northwest Presbyterian
Camping Association, which he also served as president for two years.

Dr. Howard was named president of AASCU in April 2009.
She is the first African-American to lead one of the six presidentially
based higher education associations in Washington, D.C. She is also
AASCU’s first female president.
As AASCU president, Dr. Howard is an advocate for public higher
education at the national level, working to influence federal policy and regulations on behalf of member
colleges and universities; serving as a resource to presidents and chancellors as they address state policy
and emerging campus issues; developing collaborative partnerships and initiatives that advance public
higher education; directing a strategic agenda that focuses on public college and university leadership for the
21st century; and providing professional development opportunities for presidents, chancellors, and their
spouses.
As the president of Buffalo State College, State University of New York, from 1996 to 2009, Dr. Howard
led a campus of more than 11,000 students, approximately 1,700 faculty and staff, and a financial operation
of more than $214 million. Prior to joining Buffalo State, she was the vice president for public service
and urban affairs at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, where she served in various
leadership capacities over a 23-year period.
As a college president. Dr. Howard was an active member of AASCU for many years. Her volunteer
involvement with AASCU includes serving as chair of the board of directors (2006-2007) and committee
and commission memberships that include the Voluntary System of Accountability Presidential Advisory
Committee, the Millennium Leadership Initiative, the Commission on Public University Renewal, and the
Alliance for Regional Stewardship. Dr. Howard also served as a faculty member for AASCU’s New Presidents’
Academy.
Her professional and scholarly interests include educational leadership, women and minorities in the
academy, and a long-standing personal commitment to public service. Dr. Howard serves on a number of
boards including Air University, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, National Advisory Board of the National
Survey of Student Engagement, Merchants Insurance Company, and Association Mutual Health Insurance
Company.

He and his wife, Janet, are the parents of three adult daughters. They have four granddaughters
and two grandsons.
Professor Renn’s career as an educator, department chair, and mentor has served his students,
colleagues and the entire University community with distinction. He exemplifies the dedication
and commitment of our faculty to educational excellence and to our students’ success.

A graduate of the City University of New York’s Richmond College, Dr. Howard holds a master’s degree
in education and a doctor of philosophy in educational organization, administration, and policy from the
University at Buffalo. She earned a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard
University. She has also received six honorary degrees and many awards for her contributions to public
higher education, for service to the community, and for her commitment to diversity.
In recognition of her significant accomplishments and contributions to public higher education. Dr. Howard
will receive the degree Doctor of Humane Letters (Litterarum Humaniorum Doctor, Honoris Causa) at
today’s Undergraduate Commencement ceremony.
Edinboro University is indeed fortunate to count Dr. Muriel A. Howard as an advocate and fiiend.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The University does not claim the list of degree candidates or honors designations is absolutely accurate.
Students are granted degrees only if they meet all academic and financial requirements.

The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and
executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of
the Art Department. It was first used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College President
Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with
silver relief fleur-de-lis design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom
of the collar, symbolizing the thirteen state colleges of Pennsylvania. The shaft of the mace is
composed of Brazilian rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated
by a cast sterling silver finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing curricula. The rib-like
cone form is terminated by a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Louis C. Cole Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.

The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May 1981
Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling silver
medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a Gordon
Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles.
In the background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge.
On the reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an interlacing
knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in interlocking letters
on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross of St. George, representing
the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated and cast in the cire perdue
Gost wax) process.
Surrounding the silver medallion is a gold crafted circle which reads “Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.”
Professor Katzwinkel, now retired, added this piece to the medallion especially for the Inauguration of
President Frank G. Pogue in 1997, and it is now a permanent fixture to the medallion representing the
school’s status as a University.

ACADEMIC VESTMENTS
The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a ceremonial
inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was the outward
sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s academic
processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
Gown
Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns.
The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are fashioned from black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is
designed to be worn closed and features long, flowing and pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed
to be worn open or closed. Its sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut away.
The arms protrude through a slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree is made of wool, serge, or
silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars of
velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.
Cap
The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black for the baccalaureate
and master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard
is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is
conferred by the president.

RECESSIONAL

Edinboro University Pipes and Drums

The audience is asked to stand during the Processional
and to join in the singing of the National Anthem.

Hood
The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s
and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels.
The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim
of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

THE CEREMONIAL MACE
The ceremonial mace, a symbol of presidential authority, is carried at the head of the academic
procession by the Mace Bearer. A gift of the Alumni Association, the mace was designed and executed
by Professor Henry Katzwinkel and Dr. Seymour Blinderman, former chairman of the Art Department.
It was first used at the inauguration of Edinboro State College President Chester T. McNerney, in 1967.
The mace, twenty-seven inches in length, is topped by a sterling silver sphere studded with circular
cabochon rubies, secured by bezels. The collar of the mace is inlaid with ebony, alternated with silver
relief fleur-de-lis design elements. Cultured pearls mounted in cups encircle the bottom of the collar,
symbolizing the thirteen state colleges of Pennsylvania. The shaft of the mace is composed of Brazilian
rosewood sections, separated by sterling silver rings. The mace is terminated by a cast sterling silver
finial; the five cultured pearls represent the existing curricula. The rib-like cone form is terminated by
a small silver sphere symbolizing the world.
The metal working processes incorporated in the ceremonial mace include turning, forging, inlaying,
stone setting, and lost wax centrifugal casting.

* = Students who completed degree requirements during Summer 2013.

The University does not claim the list of degree candidates or honors designations is absolutely accurate. Students are
granted degrees only if they meet all academic andfinancial requirements.

PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION

GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
Louis C. Cole Auditorium, 2:00 p.m.

The first presidential medallion was presented to former President Foster F. Diebold during the May
1981 Commencement ceremonies. Designed and executed by Professor Henry Katzwinkel, the sterling
silver medallion consists of a three and one-half inch pectoral pendant featuring on its face the figure of a
Gordon Highlander with pipes. To the right of the piper is the Cross of St. Andrew. To the left is the Cross of
England. Flanking the figure is the date 1857, the opening year of the University, and garland thistles. In the
background are the hills of Scotland, and beneath the piper is an open book, a symbol of knowledge. On the
reverse side is the sunken crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The pendant descends from a shield containing a triple-towered castle. The collar of the medallion is
comprised of a series of two-inch shields, alternately bearing three different designs: the meigle, an
interlacing knotwork peculiar to the Pictish school of Celtic art; the Tudor rose design; and “ESC” in
interlocking letters on a background of tabby weaving. Connecting each of the collar shields is a Cross
of St. George, representing the union of Scotland and England. The entire medallion was fabricated
and cast in the cire perdue (lost wax) process.

The gown, the cap, and the hood, representing the major components of the academic dress, are a
ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, where dress was
the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s
academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.
The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars
of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

MACE BEARER
Mr. Lee Rexrode
Leading the academic procession and representing his faculty
colleagues by carrying the Ceremonial Mace at today’s Graduate
Commencement is Mr. Lee Rexrode of Edinboro University’s
Department of Art.
As a Ceramics Professor and Head of the Graduate Program for Studio
Arts, Mr. Rexrode’s distinction as Mace Bearer is symbolic of the
central role the faculty play in the academic and personal development
of Edinboro students.
Professor Rexrode earned a Bachelor of Arts in Printmaking with a
minor in Art History from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and
a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics with a minor in Painting from
Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to coming to Edinboro in 1990, he served as Head of the Ceramics
Department at the Worcester Center for Crafts in Massachusetts from 1982 until 1990.
Mr. Rexrode has taught workshops throughout the country at locations such as the 92"*^ Street Y in
New York City, Baltimore Clayworks, El Camino College in Los Angeles, and at the Arrowmont School of
Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. During the spring of 2001, he toured China, researching contemporary and
historical ceramics, and lecturing at the Yixing International Symposium, Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute,

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY ALMA MATER

Presentation of diplomas takes time and yet has special significance for each individual and family. Members
of the audience are asked to remain in their seats until the end of the ceremony so that they do not disrupt
the program or interfere with the special moments of others. Commencement is our most important
occasion, and we ask you to respect its significance to the University community and to those who are
being honored.
Professional photographers have been employed to photograph each graduate receiving a diploma. To avoid
congestion and to maintain decorum in the ceremony, we ask that family members refrain from approaching
the platform to take pictures.
Out of respect for graduates and other participants, cell phones should not be used during the ceremony.
Thank you for your cooperation. We hope that you will enjoy the ceremony and celebrate the achievements
of our students.
The Campus Bookstore, located on the lower level of the Frank G. Pogue Student Center, will be open today
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Commencement ceremony will be filmed and streamed via the Internet at www.edinboro.tv.
Commencement DVDs can be purchased from Edinboro University Television following the ceremony
or online at www.eupdvd.com.
