. . . How to Score a Wrestling Match
Object of wrestling: to pin or outpoint the
opponent.
DURATION OF BOUT
Time of bout: 8 Minutes Second period: 3 Minutes
First period: 2 Minutes Third period: 3 Minutes
POSITION OF WRESTLERS
At the start of the first period, both wrestlers are
in a neutral or standing position. At the beginning
of the second period, both wrestlers are in referee s
down position, with one wrestler in the position of
advantage (top). This is decided by the flip of a
coin. For the third period, the positions are re
versed, with the wrestler on top in the position of
advantage in the second period assuming the posi
tion of disadvantage and the wrestler who was in
down position the second period assuming the top
position of advantage. Top position can be started
with one foot up.
SCORING
TAKEDOWN — When, from neutral or standing
position, a contestant gains control of his opponent
down on the mat while they are within the wrest
ling area, he is awarded TWO points for a take
down.
ESCAPE — When the defensive wrestler, the
one at a disadvantage, gains a neutral position
while the supporting points of the offensive wrest
ler are within the wrestling area, he is awarded
ONE point.
REVERSAL — When the defensive wrestler
comes from underneath and gains control of his
opponent within the wrestling area, he is awarded
TWO points.
NEAR FALL — When the offensive wrestler has
control of his opponent in a pinning situation with
both shoulders or shoulder blades held in contact
with the mat for less than one full second or when
one shoulder of the defensive wrestler is touching
the mat and the other shoulder is held within one
inch or less of the mat for two full seconds, THREE
points are awarded to the offensive wrestler.
PREDICAMENT — When the offensive wrestler
has control of his opponent in a pinning situation:
1. When both shoulders of the defensive wrest
ler are held momentarily (stopped) within approxi
mately four inches of the mat or less. A continuous
roll-through is not considered a predicament. The
offensive wrestler is awarded TWO points for a
predicament.
2. When one shoulder of the offensive wrestler
is touching the mat and the other shoulder is held
at an angle of 45 degrees or less relative to the mat,
but not sufficiently close to award a near fall, for
at least one full second.
PIN (FALL) — When both shoulders or shoulder
blades of the defensive wrestler are in contact with
the mat surface at the same time for one (1) second.
FIVE points are awarded for a pin (fall).
TIME ADVANTAGE — The offensive wrestler
who has control in an advantage position over his
opponent is gaining time advantage. If the contes
tant with the most time advantage has less than one
minute more than his opponent, no time advantage
points are.awarded. If he has one full minute, but
less than two minutes, one point is awarded. If he
has more than two full minutes of time advantage,
two points are awarded to his bout score.
NOTE:
Rule 10, Sec. 4—FLAGRANT MISCONDUCT—
A contestant, coach, or spectator will be removed
from the premises and one team point will be deducte'd from the offending contestant s, coach’s, or
specator’s team score.

PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE-TOPS IN WRESTLING
Wrestling has come a long way in the Pennsyl
vania State College Athletic Conference since the first
tournament was held at Lock Haven State College’s
Thomas Fieldhouse in 1940 with five teams entered.
Lock Haven, under Coach Hubert Jack, dom
inated the first six tournaments winning the team
title in 1940-41-42-47-48. Then in 1949 Millersville
and West Chester came up with strong teams and the
Marauders ended the Eagles long domain over the rest
of the conference.
The Pennsylvania Conference first received
national recognition in 1948 when two Lock Haven
wrestlers, Steve DeAugustino and Tony Berga, placed
4th and 3rd at the NCAA Tournament. Then in 1953
came the conference’s first National Champion when
Lock Haven’s Gus DeAugustino won the' 137-pound
title. West Chester’s Chuck Weber placed second at
this same tournament.
In 1958 Joe Hammaker, Lock Haven took a 4th
at 137.
But Lock Haven came back strong in 1950 to
once again cop the title. The tourney finally left Lock
Haven in 1951 and the host team Millersville won the
championship again. The annual event returned to
Lock Haven in 1952 and a powerful West Chester
team won its first team title.
Then in 1960 the small Pennsylvania Conference
really burst into the national limelight as Lock Haven,
with only three wrestlers entered, surprised all the big
Eastern powers at the NCAA tournament and finished
as top team in the East with a National Champion in
Gray Simons and a 3rd place winner in Ralph Clark.
Coach Jack’s Bald Eagles won the championship
again in 1953 but then West Chester took over and
won two straight titles in 1954 and 1955. Lock Haven
once again showed its power and won the next three
tournaments -- 1956-57-58.
The same season, 1960, Bloomsburg won the
NAIA team title. Then Lock Haven won the NAIA
crown in 1961 and Gray Simons won his second NCAA
title and was selected as the Most Outstanding Wres
tler in the United States. The next season found
Simons winding up one of the greatest careers in all
collegiate wrestling history (84 straight wins and a
91-2 overall record) by once again winning the 115pound NCAA title and being picked Outstanding Wres
tler again. Bloomsburg once again won NAIA cham
pionship.
But then a new team, Bloomsburg State College,
with Russ Houk at the helm entered the picture and
went on to win five of the next six conference tour
neys:
1959-60-62-63-64
Only Lock Hiven could
break the great Huskie streak with a victory at the
1%1 event.
A big upset marked the 1965 tournament held
once again at Lock Haven after stops at Bloomsburg
and Shippensburg. The powers Bloomsburg and Lock
Haven were expected to fight it out for the title. But
Clarion had other ideas and the Golden Eagles came
through strong in all weights and won its first con
ference championship.
Still another team. East Stroudsburg, became a
top contender in 1966. With the host Warriors fin
ishing a surprising second to Lock Haven in ’66.
Then at California in 1967 a top favorite East Strouds
burg team was upset by Coach Gray Simon’s Lock
Haven matmen.
But in 1968 the Warriors of Coach Clyde Witman
were not to be denied and won their first title before
a home crowd.
Lock Haven again took the crown in 1%9 and
’70 but East Stroudsburg charged back to surprise pre
tourney picks Clarion and Lock Haven with the team
trophy last year.
There have been five four-time conference cham
pions, all from Lock Haven:
Steve DeAugustino,
Ralph Clark, Gray Simons, Fred Powell and Bill
Blacksmith.
In 1963 Lock Haven won NAIA title and Fred
Powell, Lock Haven, placed 4th at NCAA and Bloom’s
Bob Hall copped a 5th.
Lock Haven again led all Eastern teams at the
1964 NCAA tourney with Fred Powell winning a title
and Jerry Swope placing 3rd. Bill Robb and Dick
Scorese, Bloom grapplers also placed 4th and 6th at
NCAA.
Bloomsburg won the NAIA title in 1965. Lock
Haven came back strong once again at the 1966 NCAA
tourney with a champion and 3rd place finisher in
Bill Blacksmith and Jerry Swope. East Stroudsburg
gained national recognition also with three NCAA place
winners in Gary Cook (4th), Chet Dalgewicz (5th)
and Bobby Guzzo (6th).
Lock Haven won the NAIA championship in both
1966 and 1967. Gary Cook, Stroudsburg’s great wres
tler, placed 3rd at both ’67 and ’68 NCAA tourneys.
Ken Melchior, Lock Haven, was the only National
Champion from the East in 1968. Ron Russo, Blooms
burg, placed 6th at 137-pounds. Cook competed on
the East team in the annual East-West All-Star Meet
in 1%8 and Russo in 1%9.
CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
In 1969 Clarion’s Doug Niebel placed sixth at
the NCAA.
The conference produced three NAIA national
champions and two NCAA College Division national
champions in 1970. Lock Haven’s duo of Don Fay
(118) and Larry Rippey (134) along with Clarion’s
Les Bressler rolled to national titles at the NAIA meet
while Slippery Rock’s Stan Dziedzic (150) and East
Stroudsburg’s Rich Schumaker (HVW) claimed NCAA
College Division crowns.
Stan Dziedzic (150) became the Pennsylvania
Conference’s magic name in 1971 as the junior mat
ace went on to win both the NCAA College Division
and NCAA University Division titles while leading
Slippery Rock to a second place-national finish in the
NCAA College Division tourney. Dziedzic was named
the Most Valuable Wrestler at the NCAA CD tourna
ment and has compiled an amazing 103-1 overall record
to date. Also grappling to top spots in the NCAA CD
championship for the Rockets were Tom Cox (runnerup
at 142), Bill Schellhorn (third at 167) and Rod Irwin
(fourth at 134).
East Stroudsburg garnered a tie for NCAA CD
fifth place honors with Ted Pease (118) and Kemple
Matter (134) grabbing the nimber three spots at their
respective weight classes. The Warriors Tony Ptak
(142) worked his way to fourth place honors.
Bloomsburg, a fifth place finisher in the PC,
carried on the Keystone State’s tradition with a second
place national finish in the NAIA Townament. The
Huskies’ Wayne Smythe was the 1971 NAIA champ at
142. Teammate Floyd Hitchcock was the NAIA runnerup at 177 and Mike Schull chipped in to the Bloomsburg
point total with a third place title at the 118-pound
class.
Over the past several seasons both lx>ck Haven
and Bloomsburg have won the tough Wilkes Holiday
Tourney team title. East Stroudsburg has also won a
Coast Guard Tourney title.

THE 1972 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The perennial battle for the crown of the “toughest small college wrestling con
ference in the country” promises to feature some of the nation’s top wrestlers once again.
Clarion State is the favored pre-tourney pick but both Slippery Rock and Lock Haven
could juggle their lineups to produce problems for Bob Bubb’s Golden Eagle grapplers.
Returning to defend their 1971 crowns at the two-day affair are Slippery Rock’s Stan
Dziedzic (150) along with the Clarion duo of Wade Schalles (158) and Bill Simpson (167).
Dziedzic, who has compiled a phenomenal 103-1 slate in collegiate competitioni was
the NCAA College Division and NCAA University Division champion at 150 last year. He
climaxed his junior campaign by being named the Most Valuable Wrestler at the NCAA CD
tournament.
118-Of the ten different individual championships to be decided the opening battle at
the 118-pound class could be the most interesting. Although no 1971 champion returns to defend
a title, Lock Haven’s Don Fay (11-0), who captured the 118 crown in 1%9 and 1970 is back in
action after missing last season due to an injury. Fay also won the NAIA 118 national title in
1970 and has never been beaten in dual meet competition. Other top contenders for the 118
title are Slippery Rock’s Mark Honess (12-5), Edinboro’s Bob Parker (14-4), and Tom Hanley
(9-4) of Clarion. The weight class could be thrown wide open if Fay moves up to the 126-pound
division for the tournament.
126-Dale Murdoch (17-4), a second place finisher last year, will carry Clarion’s hopes
at 126. Number one challenger for the top spot is Shippensburg’s Bill Corman (17-2) while Lack
Haven’s Tim Rupp (4-2) is also in the race. Slippery Rock’s hopes for a place winner at 126
received a jolt this past week when Mike Fatigante was lost for the remainder of the year with
torn ligaments.
134-Slippery Rock’s Rod Irwin (22-5) is the top choice in the conference at 134. The
Rocket hopeful grappled his way to fourth place in the 1971 NCAA CD tourney. Lock Haven’s
Jack Hopkins (9-2) will be the chief opponent blocking Irwin’s way. Waiting in the wings for
one of the final four places are Mansfield’s John Martin (13-4) and Mike Paul (12-6-1) of Shippensburg.
142-The Rockets also have a favorite at 142 in Tom Cox (18-6-1). Offering strong
opposition and also eyeing the 142 toga are Clarion’s Gary Barton (13-4) along with Lock
Haven’s Jack Hopkins (9-2). Cox finished third in the 1971 PC tourney was an NCAA CD
runnerup.
156-With last year’s 150 champion, Stan Dziedzic, undoubtedly moving up to 158, a
trio of challengers in Clarion’s Charlie Burke (12-6), Edinboro’s Dan DeMarines (13-1-3) and
The Rock’s Mike Waller (19-5) will fight for top positions.
158-Stan Dziedzic (25-0) is everyone’s pick at 158. Shippensburg’s John '^Corman
(15-2-2) who was fourth last year will be shooting for another high finish but will have his
hands full with Clarion’s Les Bressler (14-5). Bressler missed last season due to a broken leg
after claiming the NAIA national title in 1970.
167-Clarion’s outstanding Wade Schalles (22-1), the conference champ at 158 last
year, is the class of the field at 167. His teammate Bill Simpson is the defending champion at
167 but will carry on the “movin’ up’’ trend by entering the 177-pound division. California’s
Randy Haught (18-3) and Mansfield’s Don McKee (12-3-2) who fought their way to respective
third and fourth place honors last year and hope to better their standings.
177-More Golden Eagle power is on tap at 177 where Clarion’s Bill Simpson will be
looking for another state crown. He’ll run into three returnees in ’71 runnerup Mike Panarella
from Millersville (8-1-1), third place Dennis Daley (15-4-1) from California and East Strouds
burg’s Glen Eby (11-3-2). Daley might be battling for honors at 190 for the Vulcans while Eby
of the Warriors could be down at 167.
190-George Enos (7-5-1) from Slippery Rock has the inside track on the 190-pound
berth after winning the runnerup slot a year ago. Indiana’s Tom Rogish (13-1-1) is a worthy
contender for the top spot.
HVW-Closing out tourney action will be a collision of some top flight heavyweights
among which are last year’s second, third and fourth place finishers. Vying for championship
honors are Shippensburg’s Frank Myers (10-4), Edinboro’s Tom Herr (17-0) and Slippery Rock’s
Tom Jenkins (10-9). Clarion’s Paul Britcher (7-5), California’s Garee Piper (12-8), and Lock
Haven’s Harry Sherman (7-2) could also be in the thick of the chase.

YOU BE THE REFEREE
