HISTOHY

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania was
founded in 1857 as a pnvate academy. Previously
named Edinboro Academy, Edinboro State Normal
School, Edinboro State Teachers College, and
Edinboro State College the University was the sec
ond normal school established in Pennsylvania and
the 12th in the United States. On July I, 1983, it
became Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with
the formation of the Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education.

lOGATION

Edinboro University is located in the resort
community of Edinboro — just 15 miles south of
Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city. Edinboro
is conveniently located approximately 100 miles
from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo and is easi

proximity to Interstates 79 and 90.
There are two lakes nearby. Edinboro Lake is
a 250-acre recreational area with three guarded
beaches for swimming, boating and other water
sports. The Edinboro lakeside community features
a large selection of cottages for rent. Lake Erie,
one of the Great Lakes, is just 15 miles north.
Edinboro also is close to several ski resorts for
both downhill and cross country enthusiasts. The
area is a popular hunting and fishing spot for out
doors enthusiasts.
The University is the largest employer in the
area, with approximately 850 full and part-time
employees, many of them current and former
Edinboro University
students.

comprehensive selection of more than 100 degree
programs, with 52 minors tailored to meet the
needs of each student. With a student-faculty ratio
of 18:1, Edinboro offers associate’s, bachelor’s and

Chris
Rhodes was
appointed the
swimming
coach at
Edinboro
University in
October 2001.
The former
Edinboro AllAmerican
has a simple
goal, to return
the Fighting Scot swimming program
to prominence.
"I'd like to thank the search com
mittee for its efforts," commented Dr.
Frank G. Pogue, President of
Edinboro University, at the time of
the announcement. "I think they did a
fine job in the recommendation of
Chris Rhodes as the University's new
swimming coach. We consider swim
ming an integral part of the Athletic
Department and the mission of the
University. As a member of the
Edinboro Family, we're pleased to
welcome him back to campus."
Despite getting a late start, Rhodes
guided the women’s team to a 4-7
record, while the men finished 1-7.
Rhodes competed for Edinboro
from 1991-95, earning All-American
honors in 1993-94 and 1994-95 as a
member of freestyle relay teams. He
also earned All-PSAC honors and set
a school record as a member of the
200 freestyle relay team. He was
graduated from Edinboro in
December 1995 with a Bachelor's
Degree in Elementary Education.

In addition to competing in swim
ming, he was a member of the golf
team in 1994 and ‘95.
"I'm extremely excited and honored
to be coming back to Edinboro,"
related Rhodes. "Edinboro has given
me a lot. I'm pleased to be able to
give back to the school."
Rhodes began his coaching career
as an assistant swimming coach at
Titusville High School in 1996-97,
then moved on to Ashland University,
one of the top programs on the
Division II level, as an assistant
swimming coach while completing
work on his Master's Degree in
Reading, which he received in August
1999. He returned to western
Pennsylvania as the assistant swim
ming coach at Oil City Area High
School for the 1999-2000 season. For
the past year he served as the head
coach of the Stroke Development
Camp at Westminster College. In
addition, he has been a Reading
Specialist in the Oil City Area School
District.
Rhodes and his wife, Stephanie,
reside in Edinboro.

• This outstanding facility holds six 7-foot lanes in a 75’ x 42’ area with a
40’ X 40’ diving well. Water depth ranges from four feet to 13 feet.
• Four underwater windows for filming and stroke correction.
• The lanes have Kiefer “non-turbulence” lane lines and the pool wall is
guttered for fast times.
• Mercury vapor lighting, which completely eliminates pool and deck glare
with an underwater lighting system in operation.
• McComb Fieldhouse is an easily accessible on-campus facility that also
houses three basketball courts, a newly built weightroom and sports medicine
center.
