Edinboro UnlvBrsity of Pennsylvania
HISTORY

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania was
founded in 1857 as a private teachers training
school. Previously named Edinboro Academy,
Edinboro State Normal School, Edinboro State
Teachers College, and Edinboro State College,
the University was the second normal school
established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in the
United States. On July 1, 1983, it became
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with the
formation of the Pennsylvania State System of
Higher Education.

LOCATION

Edinboro University is located in the resort
community of Edinboro — just 15 miles south
of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city.
Edinboro is conveniently located approximately
100 miles from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and
Buffalo and is easily accessible from all direc
tions because of its proximity to Interstates 79
and 90.
There are two lakes nearby. Edinboro
Lake is a 250-acre recreational area with three
guarded beaches for swimming, boating and
other water sports. The Edinboro lakeside
community features a large selection of cot
tages for rent. Lake Erie, one of the Great
Lakes, is just 15 miles north. Edinboro also is
close to several ski resorts for both downhill
and cross country enthusiasts. The area is a
popular hunting and fishing spot for outdoors
enthusiasts.
The University is the largest employer in
the area, with approximately 2,000 full and
part-time employees, many of them current and
former Edinboro University students.

ACADEMICS

Edinboro University offers a diversified
and comprehensive selection of more than 100
degree programs, with 52 minors tailored to
meet the needs of each student. With a studentfaculty ratio of 18:1, Edinboro offers associ
ate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in many
specialized fields of study.
Edinboro has an undergraduate and gradu
ate enrollment of more than 7,200 students.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

nation’s third largest educational program for
students with disabilities including services for
the hearing impaired, the visually impaired, and
the learning disabled. The campus is nearly
100-percent wheelchair accessible.
The University has an outstanding honors
program for academically-gifted students and
an international education program for the
exchange of faculty and students.
Internships and field experiences integrate
academic pursuits with on-site “real world”
work situations and personal relationships,
while numerous cultural, social and recreational
activities are available.

CAMPDSEACILITIES

♦ Edinboro features 45 buildings on a spacious
585-acre campus which includes a five-acre
lake, open fields and wooded area. Day,
evening and weekend classes are available at
Edinboro University in Erie — the Porreco
Center.
♦ There are seven on-campus residence halls
housing 2,500 students.
♦ A state-of-the-art, seven-story library in the
center of campus features more than 440,000
bound volumes and 1,200,000 microform units,
an on-line public access catalog, on-line and
CD-ROM searching systems, public access cat
alog for the visually impaired, and inter-library
loan services.
♦ Edinboro University houses a planetarium,
modem science labs, solar observatory, robotics
laboratory, TV studio, radio station, and a cen
ter for the performing arts.
♦ Edinboro also features a reading clinic,
speech and hearing clinic, math clinic, parentchild development center, and computer lab for
children.
♦ Five powerful mini-computer systems, more
than 725 personal computers, 300 terminals,
and 11 computer labs with current hardware
and software are available for student use
throughout the year.
♦ The University Center boasts an indoor run
ning track, saunas and whirlpools, weight
room, racquetball and handball courts, fullservice bookstore and dining areas, and an aer
obics room.

President Dr.
Frank
G.
Pogue
announced the
appointment
of
former
Fighting Scot
All-American
Chris RJiodes
as head swim
ming coach this past October. Rhodes
replaced Melanie Wirtner, who
resigned earlier in the year.
"I'd like to thank the search commit
tee for its efforts," commented Dr.
Pogue at the time of the announce
ment. "I think they did a fine job in the
recommendation of Chris RJiodes as
the University's new swimming coach.
We consider swimming an integral
part of the Athletic Department and the
mission of the University. As a mem
ber of the Edinboro Family, we're
pleased to welcome him back to cam
pus."
Rhodes competed for Edinboro
from 1991-95, earning All-American
honors in 1993-94 and 1994-95 as a
member of freestyle relay teams. He
also earned All-PSAC honors and set a
school record as a member of the 200
freestyle relay team. He was graduated
from Edinboro in December 1995 with
a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary

Education.
"I'm extremely excited and honored
to be coming back to Edinboro," relat
ed Rhodes. "Edinboro has given me a
lot. I'm pleased to be able to give back
to the school."
Rhodes began his coaching career
as an assistant swimming coach at
Titusville High School in 1996-97,
then moved on to Ashland University,
one of the top programs on the
Division II level, as an assistant swim
ming coach while completing work on
his Master's Degree in Reading, which
he received in August 1999. He
returned to western Pennsylvania as
the assistant swimming coach at Oil
City Area High School for the 19992000 season. For the past year he
served as the head coach of the Stroke
Development Camp at Westminster
College. In addition, he has been a
Reading Specialist in the Oil City Area
School District.
"We are very pleased that Chris is
going to take over our swimming pro
gram," added Director of Athletics
Bruce Baumgartner. "He came highlyrecommended and we feel is an upand-coming young coach. We think
he'll be a nice addition to our coaching
staff, and as an Edinboro graduate,
fully appreciates our goals. I think he'll
be very well-received by the team
members, and will bring out the best in
our swim team members."

This outstanding facility holds six 7-foot lanes in a 75’ x 42’ area with a
40’ X 40’ diving well. Water depth ranges from four feet to 13 feet.
Four underwater windows for filming and stroke correction.
^ The lanes have Kiefer “non-turbulence” lane lines and the pool wall is
guttered for fast times.
Mercury vapor lighting, which completely eliminates pool and deck glare
with an underwater lighting system in operation.
McComb Fieldhouse is an easily accessible on-eampus facility that also
houses three basketball courts, a newly built weightroom and sports medicine
center.
