Edinboro University of Pennsylvania
MSIDRY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania was found
ed in 1857 as a private academy. Previously named
Edinboro Academy, Edinboro Normal School,
Edinboro State Teachers College, and Edinboro
State College, the University was the second normal
school established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in
the U.S. On July 1, 1983, it became Edinboro
University of Pennsylvania with the formation of
the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

lOCHnON
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is located
in the resort community of Edinboro - just 15 miles
south of Erie, Pennsylvania's third-largest city.
Edinboro is conveniently located approximately 100
miles from Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo. The
University is easily accessible from all directions
because of its proximity to Interstates 79 and 90.
There are two lakes nearby. Edinboro Lake is a
250-acre recreational area with three guarded
beaches for swimming, boating and other water
sports. The Edinboro lakeside community features
a large selection of cottages for rent. Lake Erie, one
of the Great Lakes, is just 15 miles north. Edinboro
also is close to several ski resorts for both downhill
and cross country enthusiasts. The area is a popular
hunting and fishing spot for outdoors enthusiasts.
Edinboro University is the largest employer in
the area, with approximately 2,000 full and parttime employees, many of them current and former
Edinboro University students.

WAIHICS
Edinboro University offers a diversified and
comprehensive selection of more than 100 degree
programs, with 52 minors tailored to meet the needs
of each student. With a student-faculty ratio of 18:1,
Edinboro offers associate's degrees, bachelor's
degrees and master's programs in many specialized
fields of study.
Edinboro has an undergraduate and graduate
enrollment of nearly 7,500 students.

SFKHLPROGRRMS
Edinboro is proud to feature the nation's third
largest educational program for the physically dis
abled including services for the hearing impaired,
the visually impaired, and the learning disabled.
The campus is nearly 100-percent wheelchair acces
sible.
The University has an outstanding Honors pro
gram for academically gifted students and an inter
national education program for the exchange of fac
ulty and students.
Internships and field experiences integrate acad
emic pursuits with on-site "real world" work situa

tions and personal relationships, while numerous
cultural, social and recreational activities are avail
able.

• Edinboro features 42 buildings on a spacious
585-acre wooded campus which includes a five-acre
lake, open fields and wooded area. Day, evening
and weekend classes are available at the 27-acre
Porreco Extension Center in nearby Erie, Pa.

There are eight on-campus residence halls
housing approximately 2,600 students.

A state-of-the-art seven-story library in the
center of campus features more than 440,000 bound
volumes and 1,200,000 microform units, an on-line
public access catalog, on-line and CD-ROM search
ing systems, public access catalog for the visually
impaired, and inter-library loan services.

Edinboro University houses a planetarium,
modem science labs, solar observatory, robotics lab
oratory, TV studio, radio station, and center for the
performing arts.

The University also features a reading clinic,
speech and hearing clinic, math clinic, parent-child
development center, and computer lab for children.

Five powerful mini-computer systems, more
than 725 personal computers, 300 terminals, and 11
computer labs with current hardware and software
are available for student use throughout the year.

Edinboro recently newly-remodeled the
University Center with an indoor running track,
saunas and whirlpools, weight room, racquetball
and handball courts, full-service bookstore and din
ing areas, and an aerobics room for student use.

2002 Preview

2002 Preview
Give Edinboro University softball
coach Dan Gierlak credit. The veteran
coach is always ready to face a challenge
straight on. His Fighting Scot squad fin
ished with a 9-28 record a year ago, losing
15 games by a two runs or less. But with
only five starters returning, a roster balanced
by just two seniors and 13 freshmen, and ace
pitcher Brianne Taylor graduated, Gierlak
has his work cut out for him.
Did we mention that Gierlak will also
send his young squad out to face the likes of
Armstrong Atlantic State, Francis Marion
and Coker to begin the season? A firm
believer in playing a strong pre-conference
schedule, Gierlak will once again travel
through South Carolina, North Carolina and
Georgia in March in a bmtal stretch that has
always left his team with a less than impres
sive record when it heads back north.
But there is wisdom to Gierlak's mad
ness. "We have to compete against the likes
of Califomia(Pa.) and Indiana(Pa.) in our
conference," pointed out Gierlak. "You look
at our scores against them recently, and we
always play them tough. Playing Armstrong
Atlantic State, Coker and Francis Marion
helps us down the road. The level of play
we see is harder. They want us to come
down. We give them good games.
"It helps us in the conference, even
though it does hurt us in the overall record,"
he continued. "It will help our pitchers to
face that level of hitter. It's a negative in
some ways, and a positive in some ways."
With Taylor gone, Gierlak's youthful
pitching staff will be thrown to the wolves
early. Taylor won seven of Edinboro's nine
games, and had a respectable 2.63 ERA
despite little support. Most telling, she
accounted for 157.2 of Edinboro's 242.1
innings (65 percent), many times throwing
both games of doubleheaders. While Taylor
was Edinboro's best chance at being compet
itive a year ago, it leaves the Boro with a
highly inexperienced staff.
"That's our number one concern,"
related Gierlak, "how well our pitchers
adjust. They weren't thrown into the heat of
battle. They came a long way in the fall. I

was very pleased in the fall. They'll have
ups and downs."
With that, Gierlak predicted that run
support will be necessary. "We know we're
young in pitching," he stressed. "We have to
score some runs. That will be our emphasis.
I think we have the bats to do that."
Gierlak is counting on the team's ath
leticism, defense and hitting ability to carry
the team while the young pitchers develop.
"I think our strength will be on the defensive
side," Gierlak commented. "We have kids in
the outfield that can run, and athletic ability
in the infield. I'm very pleased with how
they've responded." As for the hitting,
Gierlak predicts his team will be muchimproved over last year's squad which hit an
anemic .220.
Edinboro opens up the 2002 campaign
with 15 games down south, beginning with a
March 7 doubleheader at 20th-ranked Coker.
The Boro will also face 13th-ranked
Armstrong Atlantic State in a twinbill, and
has a pair of doubleheaders against two
more teams ranked nationally in the presea
son. Indiana(Pa.) is ranked 11th and
Califomia(Pa.) is 19th.
Here's a look at the 2002 Fighting
Scots:

INFIEID
A pair of second team All-PSAC West
selections will anchor the infield. Mariana
Mucciarone returns at shortstop, while
Natalie Kostelansky was chosen as a utility
player, but will now play first base.
Mucciarone is described by Gierlak as "by
far the best shortstop and one of the best
players I've ever had the opportunity to
coach". A junior college transfer, Gierlak
looks for big offensive year from the senior
after she hit just .248 a year ago. She tied
for second on the team with 13 RBIs, and
displayed plenty of power with 3 doubles, 5
triples and a home run. Despite the 17
errors she made a year ago, Gierlak raves
about her range and hands defensively.
"Mooch will be our leader both on
and off the field," Gierlak commented. "She

Page 4 ♦ 2002 Biiiiaiii gaftreism SeWiall

struggled last year and put a lot of pressure
on herself. She tried to do too much. I
think she can be an All-Region, AllAmerican type of player."
A lefthanded hitter, Kostelansky led
the team in hitting as a freshman at .305
while tying Mucciarone with 13 RBIs. She
added a team-high 5 doubles while leading
the team with 32 hits. A consistent hitter
with excellent bat control, Gierlak sees her
as a number two hitter. She spent most of
her time in right field a year ago, but is a
natural first baseman.
Kelly Griffith, last year's starter at
third base, will battle freshman Andrea
Palmier! for the starting job at the hot cor
ner. Griffith, a junior, hit just .160 a year
ago but did drive in 10 runs. After previous
ly playing the outfield, she developed into a
solid third baseman by the end of the year,
and despite the subpar average, was the
team's most consistent hitter late in the year.
A very hard worker, she could also see time
at first base and designated player. Palmier!
is an outstanding hitter who helped lead
Chenango Valley High School to the New
York State Championship a year ago.
Gierlak sees her making an immediate

impact with her bat.
Second base shapes up as a three-way
battle between transfers Corinne Mead and
Courtney Shewak and freshman Erin
Leveille. Mead and her twin sister, Carissa,
transferred to Edinboro after previously
playing at Florida Southern. She is known
for her defensive abilities, and can play both
second and short. The junior played in 25
games over two seasons at Florida Southern.
Shewak, a promising sophomore, transferred
from Bloomsburg where she appeared in 11
games, with two hits and three RBIs in eight
at bats. Leveille is moving from the out
field, and will be tried both at second base
and catcher. An excellent athlete, Gierlak
foresees a great future for the native of
Canada, and will find a place in the lineup
for her.
Like second base, the catching job is
up for grabs between Carissa Mead,
Michelle Diminuco and Leveille. Mead, a
sophomore, is the most experienced of the
trio thanks to her time at Florida Southern,
although she saw limited action in 2000 and
did not play last year. Gierlak feels she can
be a very steady catcher defensively, and is
continuing to improve with the bat.
Diminuco is outstanding defensively and a
good hitter, but has had some arm problems.
The freshman was an All-Western New York
selection as a senior at Albion High School.
Three freshmen will compete for
playing time in the middle infield. Jennifer
Manzella suffered a knee injury in high
school, then re-injured the knee in the fall.
A bigger player with range, Gierlak looks to
develop softer hands but feels she'll see time
at short and second. Amanda Ross is anoth
er player who can play both middle infield
spots. A pleasant surprise with the bat in the
fall, Gierlak looks for her to develop into a
good player down the road. Jen Jones has
shown good movement at second. Now it's
just a question of how her bat develops.

OUTFIEID
Gierlak is excited about his group of
outfielders, with four players vying for the

majority of time. It is an athletic group,
although Meghan Seth is the lone returnee
among the quartet. One of only two seniors
on the team, Seth is a three-year starter and
is expected to be the regular in left field.
After hitting .291 as a sophomore, she
slumped to .238 as a junior, with 4 doubles.
"As a senior, Meghan has to assume a
leadership role," stressed Gierlak. "She has
the ability to be one of the top hitters in the
conference."
Redshirt freshman Tricia Sinkuc will
start in center. An excellent defensive play
er, she is still learning after playing in a high
school program that did not have fast pitch
softball. Complicating matters, she broke a
finger a year ago and played in just six
games, getting one hit in seven at bats.
Gierlak is very high on her.
Kristin Schotting, a transfer from PittGreensburg, comes with a strong arm and a
big bat. She hit .400 a year ago, leading
Pitt-Greensburg in doubles (6), triples (6),
home runs (3) and RBIs (22). The junior
will hit in the middle of the lineup.
Freshman Tara Frantz (Bellefonte,
PA/Bellefonte) was named the Mountain
League Player of the Year while performing
for Bellefonte High School. Gierlak thinks
Frantz' speed will be a plus as the leadoff
hitter, and as he puts it, "she has a cannon
for an arm".
Gierlak believes sophomore Juli-Ann
Marsala will figure into the mix, as well.
Marsala appeared in just 16 games, hitting
.133 in 15 at bats, but she has switched from
a right-handed hitter to slapping the ball
from the left side to take advantage of her
speed. Her speed could prove very valuable.
Jennifer Ronald is a natural left-hand
ed hitter who, like Leveille, is a native of
Canada. She's an aggressive player who will
push people as she matures.

the bulk of the load. Nemelli finished with a
2-4 record and a 3.97 ERA in ten games. In
47 2/3 innings she allowed 48 hits and 21
walks while striking out 37. Kennedy was
0-5 in nine games with a 4.14 ERA, striking
out 23 in 37 innings while giving up 42 hits
and 11 walks.
"We're going to rely on them an awful
lot," admitted Gierlak. "Both have the abili
ty to be very good. They just haven't been
in the heat of the battle. I probably should
have used them more last year, but with
Brianne Taylor it was difficult. They'll have
a chance this year.
"They're two different pitchers," con
tinued Gierlak. "Jo is an 'up' pitcher, Jen is
more of a 'down' pitcher. Jen has to develop
a few more pitches. She moves it around
and is learning to mix speeds. Jo has the
pitches and is stronger. They're ahead of
where Brianne Taylor and Suzanne Nimelli
were as sophomores."
Freshmen Anna Gray and Allison
Campbell will push the sophomore duo.
Gray has a great changeup and is working
on her fundamentals. Campbell has good
ability but has been battling injuries. In
addition, Gierlak can call on Schotting and
Griffith to pitch. Griffith has a great knuckleball and could be used as a change of pace.
