Wans

Excellence
in
coaching and a win
ning tradition are
terms
that have
become synonymous
with
Edinboro
University
cross
country and track
and field coach
Doug Watts. Since
his
arrival
at
Edinboro in 1969,
the Running Scots
have
experienced
nothing but success, producing numerous AllAmericans and team championships, as well as
four individual cross country champions and
five individual track champions.
Watts' coaching credentials speak for them
selves, including 29 consecutive undefeated
cross country seasons and a string of 111 straight
dual meet victories. Watts' squads have also pro
duced a total of six national championships,
including back-to-back-to-back NCAA Division
II titles from 1986 through 1988 and back-toback NAIA titles in 1975 and 1976. His teams
can also boast five Division II runner-up tro
phies, plus finishes of third (twice), fourth (three
times), fifth, sixth (twice), seventh (twice),
eighth (three times) and ninth.

In total, the men's squads have 16 top ten
finishes at the national meet in the last 21 years.
His women's program, though yet to crown a
national champion, has also established itself as
one of the premier programs in the NCAA East
Region and on the national stage. That includes
four straight top five finishes at the national
meet. An "untouchable" amount of conference,
district, and regional "Coach of the Year" awards
are scattered throughout his office, including
Edinboro’s 2001-02 Coach of the Year award.
The National Coach of the Year five times.
Watts has published numerous distance-running
articles for national publications. Twice an
Olympic coach nominee. Watts annually con
ducts a summer pre-season endurance training
camp, the Edinboro Distance Village, for young
men and women. In addition, 16 of his Edinboro
athletes have been U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers.
Most recently. Watts has ventured into the
administrative portion of his sport, being elected
President of the NCAA Division II Track and
Field Coaches Association. In addition, he is the
head of the NCAA Division II Cross Country
Hall of Fame Committee and is a member of the
USATF Coaches Advisory Committee.
A 1964 graduate of the University of Akron
with a degree in Health and Physical Education,
Watts began his coaching career at Walsh Jesuit
High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He intro
duced a running program at Walsh Jesuit that
yielded a two-year record of 19-0 and a district
championship. Watts and his wife Margaret have
two adult children, Wendy and Christopher.

Edinboro’s Cross Cauntry PWlosoplig

"Generally, we attract the middle distance and distance athlete who is seeking a special envi
ronment for running," says head coach Doug Watts about his track and cross country programs at
Edinboro University. “A student-athlete should consider Edinboro because of the following reasons”:

1.

2002-03 EDINBORO UNIVERSITY CORPORATE SPONSORS
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

A small school setting, academically oriented, that generally allows for a fuller
personal development in the classroom, athletic and social activities; yet offers
a large, diversified choice of educational majors and specialties.
A TEAM concept in training competition.
A distance-based training program integrating selected road races as a
training supplement.
Division I schedule of intercollegiate competition.
A program that allows personal direction and individualism, a proper balance
between academics and athletics... and fun.
A tradition of excellence and proven success in running within an environment
supportive and respectful of distance runners.

Cross Country Outlook
The 2002 cross country campaign could
well look like the tale of two teams. Long-time
head coach Doug Watts has a very simple goal in
mind — keep with tradition. That tradition was
exemplified a year ago, when the Fighting Scot
harriers
collected
two
more
PSAC
Championships and East Region Championhips,
adding to the rich tradition that is Edinboro cross
country.
Traditionally, both the men’s and women’s
cross country teams have been favorites in both
the PSAC and the region, along with top ten
national finishes in each of the last five years.
But that may change this year, at least from the
women’s standpoint.
For the first time in many years. Watts faces
the challenge of guiding a very inexperienced
women’s team. Not one All-American returns to
a squad which dominated the East and placed
seventh at Nationals. Gone are Lisa Petsche,
Edinboro’s first female four-time All-American,
and Kathy Breisch, a fellow All-American who
paced the Scots in virtually every competition
last fall.
No seniors return and only one junior, but

the roster features a promising mix of six sopho
mores and seven freshmen. Most noteworthy,
though, is the fact that no one on the roster has
more than one year of varsity experience. “They
better mature pretty quickly,” admitted Watts,
“or it could be a difficult task to remain in the
forefront.”
That’s not to say it is not a team laced with
talent. Leading the way is sophomore Lindsay
Roberts. Roberts was named the PSAC Rookie
of the Year and finished 11th at the East
Regional to earn All-Region honors. She con
tinued her strong showing in the spring, placing
second
at
the
PSAC Track
& Field
Championships in the 10,000 meter run, turning
in a provisional qualifying time.
“Lindsay has accepted what it takes to
become an All-American, and is very focused on
doing the things to give herself the chance to
earn that award,” Watts pointed out.
Kiersten Buckley turned in a strong early
showing last year before suffering an injury. She
managed to finish 22nd at the PSAC
Championships, but then sustained a stress frac
ture during the track season.
“With any luck, which she did not have last
year, Kiersten will emerge in the leader’s pack
by late season,” Watts commented.
Sophomores Lisa Gallagher and Shannon
Loewke are expected to make significant
improvement this year. Gallagher was a regular
a year ago, placing 33rd at the PSAC
Championships and 39th in the East Regional
Championships.
Sophomores Lindsey Schlieper, Kristen
Love, Genise Green, and Katie Donahue add to
the list of talented sophomores. Donahue is a
transfer from the University of Rhode Island,
where her team was the runner-up in the Atlantic
Ten Conference.
Watts expects several recruits to come in
and contribute immediately. “The new recruits
will have to run well early in their careers,”
Watts admitted.
Kelly Richards, a multiple All-State per
former in cross country and track from nearby
General McLane High School, is one such indi
vidual. Julie Nemergut, also an All-State per
former, is another promising freshman.
Additional depth should come from redshirt
freshman Erin Tomczak and freshman Kristen
Malloy.
After four straight PSAC and East Regional
titles, the picture may not be as bright as usual.

Page 2 ♦ 2002-03 Edinboro gnhrersity Cross Gountry/Tracka Field

Cross Country Outlook
but Watts cautions naysayers. “For the first time
in a long while, we are not the overwhelming
favorites to win the conference or regional title.
But, don’t bet on us not running at the Nationals
again this November.”
With an All-American, four All-Region
performers, and five All-PSAC runners return
ing, the odds are heavily in favor of the men’s
team continuing the tradition of Edinboro excel
lence.
Like the women, the men must replace a
four-time All-American, as former national
champion Yi Min Wu has departed. But after
red-shirting in 2001, Aaron Rowe should receive
plenty of recognition.
Rowe was a two-time All-American in
track this past spring, and the junior placed 11th
at the 2000 NCAA Division II Cross Country
National Championships. He was just the sec
ond American to cross the finish line, bettered
only by teammate Jeff Barker. At the 2000 East
Regionals, Rowe finished third behind Barker
and Wu. “Aaron is known for his focused direc
tion in all he does, and is a fierce competitor,”
Watts pointed out. That was clearly evident last
spring, when he finished third in the 10,000
meters at the NCAA’s.
Nat Wibberley is another seasoned runner.
The senior finished fifth at both the PSAC
Championship
and
East
Regional
Championship. He was also the second Scot to
cross the finish line at Nationals, placing 55th.
At the 2000 NCAA’s, Wibberley finished 49th.
He looks to take the next step and earn AllAmerican honors.
Junior Joe Reynolds and sophomore Mark
Hryvniak are also key returnees. Both earned
All-PSAC and All-Region honors,
with
Reynolds placing sixth at the PSAC
Championships and Hryvniak ninth. Hryvniak
placed 11th at the East Regional meet, while
Reynolds was 21st.
Despite strong showings in 2001, the two
runners face uncertainty in 2002. “Reynolds, in
particular, ran very well early last fall, only to
fall to a rare liver condition that kept him out of
the 2002 track season,” stressed Watts.
Hryvniak ran track in the spring, but had a sur
gical procedure in June.
Tim Cron is another runner with talent, but
a medical history. He fought off calf problems
last year to finish third at the PSAC’s and sev
enth at the Regionals. “Tim can run at AllAmerican levels, but his tom calf has severely

limited his performance the last two years,” stat
ed Watts.
Jimmy Ansberry was another runner to
attain All-Region status, thanks to a 29th place
finish. The sophomore will benefit greatly from
the year of experience. Senior Kimmo Lassila
and junior Joe Janke also look for improvement.
Lassilo was 17th at the PSAC meet.
Watts looks for three red-shirt freshmen to
step up. “Ryan Coon, Lucas Dorsch, and Jared
Lowry have shown the talent and spark to push
known upperclassmen aside,” Watts predicted.
Another sophomore, Colin McClelland, may
red-shirt in 2002.
Watts has five promising freshmen on the
roster, and all will have have a difficult time
breaking into the lineup. Jeremy Boehm, Jeff
McCabe, James O’Kane, and Nick Pecome will
compete this yaer, with Pennsylvania All-Stater
Tom Broffain red-shirting.
“For these men, there is no change in our
goals — win the PSAC, the NCAA East
Regionals, and take a shot at the national tro
phy,” Watts stated confidently.

After earning All-American honors three times in cross
country and becoming the first person in the history of the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to capture the 1500,
5000, and 10,000 meter events at the same meet, Carl
Leonard (above right) still had one accomplishment missing
from his remarkable career at Edinboro University ... a
national championship. The Morristown, Wales native wait
ed until his last collegiate meet to rectify that. Competing at
the 1996 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track National
Championships, Leonard forever etched his name among
the Fighting Scot running elite with a first place finish in the
5000 meters.

David Antognoli was head coach Doug Watts' first recruit back in 1969.
Antognoli is, according to Watts, the reason Edinboro State College became
creditable on the national level, and helped lay the foundation for the suc
cessful program that exists today. The recruiting classes of 1972-73 fol
lowed in the footsteps of Antognoli and led to Edinboro's six national team
titles.
Antognoli won a multitude of individual titles, including three national
titles, and many All-American certificates in cross country and track. He
was awarded the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete in 1973
after winning the cross country championship in 1971, the NAIA 10,000
meters title in 1972, and the USTFF national championship in the six mile
event. He also was the top collegiate finisher in the 1972 Olympic Trials.

In 1982, in a brutal combination of calf-deep snow, 20-degree temper
atures, and a chilling wind, the crowd at the finish line of the 1982 NCAA
Division II championships in St. Cloud, Minnesota was barely able to make
out the faint outline of Greg Beardsley, who crossed the finish line in a
record 60.9 seconds before the rest of the field to win the national champi
onship. Beardsley recalls his experiences as “great, but very cold!”
“You are what you train,” shares Beardsley.
Beardsley won the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete
in April 1983.

Martin Lyons

Martin Lyons was attracted to Edinboro University due to the strength
and reputation of the Running Scots cross country program. The
Melbourne, Australia native had no trouble adapting to his move across the
globe, winning the NCAA Division II individual cross country title as a
freshman in 1991.
Though he came to the United States with little cross country experi
ence, coach Doug Watts expected All-American honors from the Aussie on
the merit of his track credentials. Lyons would go on to claim cross coun
try All-American honors in each of his four seasons at Edinboro. Only two
other runners have accomplished this feat since.
An eight-time All-American in cross country and track, Lyons was the
NCAA East Regional record-holder in cross country, and also holds the school record in the marathon
with a time of 2:21:35, set back in 1995.

Yi Min Wu became Edinboro’s fourth national champion after he won the
1998 national meet by a 10 second margin with a time of 31:06.60. Wu
began his collegiate career on a tear as he did not lose a race throughout his
freshman season and won the first meet of 1999 for a streak of nine meets.
A six-time All-American in cross country and track, Wu was recognized
as both the PS AC and NCAA East Regional ‘Runner of the Year’ in 1998 an
‘99. In addition, he was the 1999 national track and field runner-up in the
10,000 meters in addition to winning the PS AC 10,000 meter championship.
Wu earned his second All-American certificate in track by also placing sixth
in the 5,000 meter run as a freshman. Wu is one of three runners to earn AllAmerican honors four times in cross country.
Finally, Wu was named the PSAC Rookie of the Year in track and field as a freshman.

Track OuUook
The Edinboro University track & field team
enjoyed one of its finest seasons in years in
2002, and with many talented returning competi
tors, looks for more success in 2003.
Three Fighting Scots earned All-American
honors, with the men placing 29th and the
women 27th. A total of six Boro athletes com
peted in last year’s National Championships in
San Angelo, TX.
Aaron Rowe, an All-American in both the
5,000 and 10,000 meters, is the top returnee. Nat
Wibberley will also push for All-American acco
lades after qualifying in the 3,000 meter steeple
chase. Jared Lowry was a provisional qualifier
in the 10,000 meters, while Tim Cron, if healthy.

can be a national competitor, as well.
Ed Brown, who doubles as a tight end on the
football team, enjoyed success in the field
events, particularly in the shot put, where he was
one of the top competitors in Pennsylvania as a
senior. Nick Price provides further depth.
The women’s team must replace AllAmericans Kathy Breisch and Lisa Petsche, but
have two outstanding heptathlon competitors in
Lindsey Schlieper and Megan Zitner. Schlieper
is a two-time provisional qualifier, while Zitner
set the school record a year ago.
Lindsay Roberts, a sophomore, looks to con
tinue the strong tradition of the distance runners.
