"Highlanders” Named
New ESC Monicker
By Richard Peterson, Editor
Last year a suggestion was made
to THE SPECTATOR that a contest be started to give the College
llege
rd to
some sense of balance in regard
a tradition. Many people, both faculty and students, have participated
and workecr hard to correct a situat ion concerning a college with a
Scottish name (Edinboro), an Indian team name iRed Raiders),
an Hawaiian love song, (Alma Ma
ter), and no mascot.
A contest was held last spring re
garding a change in team name,
Alma -Mater, and the selection of
a mascot. More people voted in
this contest than in any election
held on this campus last year. The
results were os follows: Team
name - Highlanders: z\lma Mater Annie Laurie: Mascot • Scotch Ter
rier.
These results were submitted to
Student-Faculty council, who ac
cepted the new team name and
mascot, but rejected the new Alma
Mater. Next the results were
passed on to the Administrative
Council and the Alumni Control
Board, who accepted the new team
name, but rejected the mascot on
the grounds that its upkeep would
be more trouble than it’s worth as
a mascot.
As of now, THE SPECTATOR
announces, officially, that after
