SCOTS BATTLE TO EVEN RECORD
RtainorB from the south thAt lock Haven* s Bald Eeigles have been declared extinct are
falling on deaf ears in the canp of Edinboro State*s Fighting Scots.
The Eagles have always managed to pile up points against the Scots and Lock Haven* s
homecoming festivities this Saturday should provide the incentive to continue that pace.
Although Edinboro State has managed to come out on top in three of the last four years
under idcDonald mentorship, the Eagles have averaged 26.8 points per game against the
Scots in the four-year span.
Lock Haven is currently 1-4 for the 1973 schedule while ISdinboro State, carrying
a 2-3-1 slate, will be battling for a break-even .500 mark.

The clash marks the first

of three games that tbe Scots must claim to showcase a winning record for the 1973
season.
Edinboro is coming off the heels of consecutive t5>set wins over Indiana, 21-14,
and Clarion, 23-22, after getting off to a disappointing 0-3r1 start*

It appears as

if Bill licDonald* s young Scots are coming of age and might have to be reckoned with for
the remainder of the year.
Looking forward to another successful Saturday afternoon will be **Players of the
Week*’ Larry littier, a sophomore kicker from Glenwillard, Pa., and junior linebacker
Jim iMcClure from Ambridge.

Uttler proved to be the margin of difference in the Scots

23-22 win over Clarion when he booted a fourth quarter 40-yard field goal into a gale
like wind.

McClure was the man of the day defensively finishing with a game high 19

tackles with his steady play.
Littler was listed on the ECAC Weekly All-Star Team named out of New York City
while teammate Jim i'kstroianni received honorable mention to the squad.
Several other Scots came away with big plays to aid in the win as safety John
Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) blocked an extra point attenpt, defensive back George Miller
(Johnstown) intercepted a fourth period Clarion pass in the end zone, safety Jim
i'festroianni (Trafford) picked off an Eagle lateral to race 42 yards for a score and
Howard Hackley’s (Pittsburgh) 43—yard over—the—shoulder catch of a Jude Basile aerial
that set vp Littler* s winning field goal.

Top defensive efforts will be required of

these ESC gridders once again to stop the inspired Lock Haven attack.
Sophomore quarterback Dave Bower leads Lock Haven’s offensive thrust.

The young

signal caller was ranked as the NCAA’s number three passer in the nation just a week
ago,

Bover has connected on 53 of 99 tosses for 500 yards and six touchdowns to take

top honors in the Pennsylvania Conference’s Western Division.
The Scots secondary will also have to contend with top notch receivers Lou Savani
and Chuck Vennie,

Vennie, who has been sidelined by an injury, played in his first

game and responded by snagging six passes while running for 72 yards.
The Scots will counter with running threats Melvin Morrisette (Ambridge) at tail
back and Bob Staab (Erie) at fullback,
with 77 yards and a touchdown.

Staab, a freshman, had his best day Saturday

Quarterback Jude Basile will direct ESC’s offense.

One of the largest crowds in Lock Haven’s history is expected to see the clash
which will get underway at 2j00 p.m. in Painter Stadium,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

INDIANA READY TO TOMAHAWK SCOTS
Edinboro State* s winleas gridders are confronted with another talent-laden ambush
this Saturday when the Scots visit the once-beaten Big Indians of Indiana University*
V/hile the Scots have been laboring through a maturing process with an 0-3-1 card,
Indiana is well on its way to securing the school’s thirteenth straight winning season*
The Indians are also looking forward to continuing the nation's second longest conse
cutive game scoring streak which now stands at 105*.
The Tribe boasts the best 11-year regular season record in the country with sin in
credible 79-17-12 aggregate.

The flashy slate showcases an 82*3 winning percentage

mark*
A pair of top offensive weapons are on hand again for the Indian’s 1973 warpath
in quarterback George Yokitis and place kicker Ron Orenak.
A Louisville transfer, the 6-2,190-pound Yokitis started slowly but showed steady
'progress in leading Indiana to an 8-1 mark last year.

He conpleted nearly 50 per cent

of his passes for 1,144 yards and ten touchdowns.
Orenak, the other half of the point-producing dub, topped the club in scoring last
fall with 31 markers.

The junior place-kicking specialist highlighted his 1972 efforts

with a 44-yard field goal, an IBP record.
Leading the Indiana defense is highly reputed cornerback Kevin i-dcGorry, a 5-i0,
175-pound senior.

Bdinboro unveiled running back ifelvin I4orrisette Inlts 17-3 loss to Slippery Rock
and the newcomer responded in fine fashion,

i'forrisette rolled vip 102 yards in 20

carries and was named “Offensive Player of the Week” by the coaching staff for his sue
cessful home debut.

The 5-11,180-pound sophomore will open at tailback against the

Indians•
Soph quarterback Jude Basile has also nailed down a starting assignment in the
Scot backfield,

Basile entered during the second period against the “Rock” and combined

with Morrisette to breathe some signs of life into an ESC offense that has scored only
three points in two games.
Being put to another big test will be an Edinboro defense that is allovdng oppo
nents over 225 yards per game on the ground,

ESC will depend on tackles Tom Herr (6-3,

230,Sr,) and Jeff Shaw (6-2,208,Fr.) along with ends John Bayer (6-0,205,Jr.) and Jim
Barto (6-1,180,So.) to stop the Indians running attack.

Linebackers Jim McClure (6-0,

215,Jr.), Dave McGartland (6-1,225,So.) and i4ike Schnirel (6-0,200,Jr.) round out the
heavily counted on forward wall of defense,
Indiana owns a lopsided 30-8-2 lead in the overall series between the two schools
that began in 1927 and will be looking forward to increasing the margin before a large
homecoming crowd.
The two teams will collide at 2s00 p,m, in lUP’s George P, Miller Stadium.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ROCKETS READY TO DEFEND CRWN AGAINST STUBBORN SCOT JINZ
Slippery Rock State will be striving to take its first big step towards another
Pennsylvania Conference crown when the Rockets invade Edinboro’s Sox Harrison Stadium
for their league lidlifter this Saturday,
The Rockets have 25 lettermen returning from a team that broke 17 school records,
finished 8-2-1, won the Pennsylvania Conference title and earned a berth in the Knute
Rockne Bowl,

”As long as we are the state chanpions, we are the team to beat,” says

Rocket mentor Bob DlSplrito, who garnered virtually eve^Coach-of-the-Year honor in
sight last year,.
Yet, Bill McDonald’s band of Fighting Scots have k^t the Rockets grounded in re
cent years.

The Scots have maintained their stubborn ways over the past nine seasons

as Slippery Rock has managed only a pair of wins over ESC since 1963.
have battled to three ties.

The two teams

Ironically Edinboro was the only conference team that

Slippery Rock didn’t topple last year as the Rockets had to come from behind to settle
for a 7-7 stalemate with the Scots,
A stingy Slippery Rock defense that has given

only 13 points in two games and a

strong offensive line could spell the end of ESC’s jinx over DiSpirito’s Green and I'Jhite
gridders.

Clearing the way for a crop of yoxing Rocket backs are 6-4,250-pound center

Ed Seiwell, 240-pound guard Tom Yaksick and 6-3,230-pound tackle Stan Stanchek,
Linebacker Terry Factor (6-0,205) anchors the ’’Rock’s” defense once again along
with end Curt Krai (6-3,225) and cornerback Jim Gallagher,
-more-

The trio helped lead

2

- -

Slippery Rock to a 27-0 shutout of i^nsfield in the opener and then was just as staunch
in a 13-6 loss to Puget Sound,
Launching the Rockets offensive attack have been quarterback George Mihalik and
tailback Ed O’Reilly.

The 5-11,180-pound O’Reilly has bolted for 305 yards in two

games and leads the Rockets in scoring with three touchdowns,
Edinboro State fans will not get a chance to see the defensive efforts of highly
regarded Rocket linebacker Dan Romaniszyn,

The soph standout, brother of former Scot

star Jim Romaniszyn who is now with the Cleveland Browns, suffered a badly broken leg
prior to the first game and will be lost for the 1973 season.
The Scots are still trying to regroi:?) for the conference clash after playing their
toughest opening schedule in ESC grid history,

Edinboro is 0-2-1 with a 0-0 tie against

Fairmont State, a 24-11 setback to highly respected Central Connecticut and a 37-0 shut
out at the hands of ninth-ranked Ashland,
One of the few pleasant surprises in the first three outings has been freshman
speedster Bob Glaser from Pittsburgh,

The Scot youngster is averaging 4*3 yards per

carry with his 120 yards in 28 tries.

He had his best showing last week against Ash

land with 87 yards against the Purple Eagles nationally rated defense.
Glaser was cited by the Edinboro coaching staff along with defensive end Steve
Barto as offensive and defensive "Players of the Week*’ for their performances against
Ashland,
Striving to get the Scots on the scoreboard have been quarterback Ken Widel and
Jude Basile,

In three games, however, the duo has been able to get the football into

the end zone only one time, that being a 60-yard scoring toss from Basile to freshman
tight end Steve Larson.
Widel, a sophomore from Dravosburg, is geared to run the Scots triple option x^here
he can do some rushing of his own while Basile likes to throw the football,

Basile has

hit on 16 of 33 aerials for 160 yards.
Joining Glaser in the ESC backfield are Dave Seigh, Brad Crawshaw and Bob Staab,
All are freshman but Seigh who is a sophomore.
•more-

-3Both Glaser and Seigh share the tailback honors while Crawshaw and Staab take turns
at fullback,

Seigh follows Glaser on the Scots stat charts with 110 yards on the

ground,
Junior linebacker Mike Schnirel has established himflelf as the Scots top tackier
on the defensive unit.
to lead the list,

The 6-0,200-pound first-year starter has registered 40 stops

Gro\:5)ed behind Schnirel are tackle Tom Herr (31), end John Bayer

(30) and middle linebacker Jim McClure (28).
For Bill McDonald’s band of Scots its been a year of new faces as nine sophomores
and four freshmen form the nucleus of the Scots’ 22 starters.
listed as regulars.

Most of the e35)erience is

Only six seniors are

the offensive line where guards

Bob Miseyka and Dean Pikoulas along with tackle John Kuster are senior vets.

On the

defensive side of the ledger free safety John Walker, cornerback Jim >Jastroianni and
tackle Tom Herr round out the fourth-year men.
The head knocking in the PC Western Division opener between the Scots and the
’’Rock” will get underway at 1 s30 p,m,
