Greetmss from the President
Dear Family, Friends and Fans of the Fighting Scots:
As we engage upon the 2005-2006 academic year at Edinboro University,
we look back with deep pride at one of the most successful years in the history
of Edinboro athletics. Much of the success of our men's and women's athletic
teams is due to your loyal support of our s^lar-athletes in basketball, cross
country, football, soccer, softball, swimming, track, volleyball, and wrestling,
as well as wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports.
The long legacy of Edinboro athletics will be one of the highlights celebrat
ed during the University's Sesquicentennial in 2006-2007. As we prepare to
celebrate the University's 150th anniversary, we are guided by the vision of
"Building a prosperous future through academic excellence and civility."
Our athletes' dedication to education, discipline, and sportsmanship that are
at the heart of Edinboro athletics will serve them well as they pursue their
dreams beyond the playing fields of their alma mater. Their success in competitive endeavors will con
tribute to the quality cfli^ on our campus and throughout the communities of northwestern
Pennsylvania.
Fans of the Fighting Scots are always welcome at Edinboro University and I look forward to greeting
you at our many athletic, cultural and arts presentations. Please visit our campus as often as possible..
Go Scots!

Fighting Scots posted a 2-1 win at 14thranked Slippery Rock.
Kagiavas brought a wealth of coaching
experience to Edintoro, both locally and at
the international level. He joined the
Edinboro staff after serving as assistant man
ager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie for
two years. At Family First, he was responsi
ble for organizing all phases of the facility's
indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas
was assistant tournament director for the 210team Flagship Cup tournament.
Kagiavas has served as the coaching
director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer
Club. Under his direction, the organization
has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 199798 season, he took the 15-under team to the
state finals. The past two summers he has
taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the
state championship and to the Final Four of
Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16
in the coimtry in their age group. He is the
girls coaching director at the Erie Admirals.
In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champi
ons with the Erie Admirals in the Under-17
and Under-18 girls teams. This marks four
state champions in four years.
Kagiavas was a standout defender at
Gannon from 1987-91, and played profession
ally in his native South Africa, along with
Greece and Canada, after earning his bache
lor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of
coaching positions in many levels of competi
tion since 1989, highlighted by a successful
stint as a professional
coach in South Africa.
At
Gannon,
Kagiavas was a fouryear starter at midfield
and defender for a
Golden Knight team
which advanced to the
NCAA Division II Final
Four in 1989 and 1990.
Gannon was 58-14-8
during his four seasons,
with fiiree NCAA play
off appearances.
Kagiavas played
professionally for a St.
Catherines team that
won the Canadian Cup
in the National Soccer
League. He was a play

er/coach for the Springs Old Boys and
Boksburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the
Eastern Transvaal all-select indoor team.
In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head
coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer
program, also assisting with the varsity
squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 152-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Final
Four.
Kagiavas began his coaching career with
the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa
Maria Elementary School team. In the spring
of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the
Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that
competed in the National Soccer League of
South Africa. In the summer of 1991, he was
the head coach of the Springs (South Africa)
Old Boys of the Division II men's semi-pro
fession^ league, earning Coach of the Year
honors.
Kagiavas has earned a South African
coaching license, a professional referee
license, and his United States Soccer
Federation National B License and has his
NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He
serves as the vice president for the PSAC
Soccer Committee and is a member of the
regional NSCAA ranking committee. In addi
tion, he is the chairman of the NCAA
Regional Ranking Committee for the
Northeast Region.
He and his wife. Dawn, a native of St.
Marys, Pa., reside in Fairview with their nineyear-old daughter, Kaylee.

Kagiavas also expects the added year's
experience to improve the maturity level of
the team. "I think a lot of kids will step up and
accept responsibility, unlike last year. They
were intimidated. I really believe we'll be sur
prised by a couple of kids."
Edinboro opens its tenth season under
Kagiavas
on August
27,
playing
Shippensburg. "We start right off with a pair
of killer matches in Shippensburg and
Blooomsburg, then we play Bridgeport, a
team which should be better than last year."
The Purple Knights were ECAC finalists a
year ago.
"With the likes of lUP, Slippery Rock,
Mercyhurst, along with a crossover game
against East Stroudsburg - it's an extremely
tough schedule. 1 can see two or three wins
that 1 think we should get. We try and play as
many PSAC schools as we can. They're
always quality teams. I believe we may have
the toughest Division 11 conference in the
covmtry."

Gk>alkeepers
A year ago Trish Chilcott and Abbey Mortus
shared the goalkeeping duties, although
Chilcott saw 9ie majority of the action. With
Mortus gone, Chilcott will likely see the
majority of the time, although Kagiavas has
always split up the duties in goal. A senior
who will serve as a captain, Chilcott had a
1.22 goals against average with a pair of
shutouts while appearing in 17 matches, with
nine starts. In two seasons as Edinboro's goal
keeper, she has a 1.16 career goals against
average, the best in school history.
Redshirt freshman Katie Barbour and
freshman Lisa Bartolowits will push for play
ing time. Barbour was a two-time first team
All-Erie County League selection at nearby
General McLane High School. Bartolowits
was a four-year starter at Shaler Area High
School with a promising future.

Deferwiers
Edinboro's backfield has been a position
of strength, and Kagiavas expects it to be
again despite the loss of Maura Sansone. A
year ago the Fighting Scots posted five
shutouts and held seven other opponents to
just a goal. Senior Kathy Lantzy and junior
Becky Hostettler are the leaders of the defense
and join Chilcott as 2005 captains. Lantzy
started 16 matches a year ago, while
Hostettler was one of only two players to start
all 18 matches.
Mary Grebenc gained plenty of experi
ence as a freshman, starting 14 matches. She
finished with a goal and tlu-ee assists for five
points, and Kagiavas looks for big things
from her in the future. She may also be need
ed in the midfield. Two other sophomores,
Kim Koricich and Janelle Layton, look to
make an impact on defense. Koricich is
another local product from General McLane
High School. Both played in eight matches
last year, with Koricich coming back from an
ACL injury.
Kagiavas feels Hayley Lambert will pro
vide further help. As a freshman in 2003,
Lambert played in all 18 matches, but she did
not play for the Fighting Scots a year ago.
Several freshmen figure to bolster the
defense. One who will be counted on inune-

diately is Ashley Jones from nearby Fairview
High School. She helped the Tigers to the
regional finals in 2003 and 2004, and played
on an Erie Admirals club team which won
three state titles. Kagiavas recruited Jones to
step in immediately for Sansone at sweeperback.

Midfielders
No fewer than four returning players
started more than ten matches and will vie for
time in the midfield. But while the numbers
are there, Kagiavas admits the Scots lack a
true outside midfielder.
Ashley Pulman proved to be well worth
the wait after sitting out the 2003 season fol
lowing knee surgery that summer. She
played in and started 17 matches last year,
leading the Fighting Scots in goals (5), assists
(6) and points (16).
Pulman became
Edinboro's first PSAC major award winner,
being named the Rookie of the Year. A first
team All-PSAC selection, she also earned a
spot on the NSCAA All-Northeast Region
second team.
Elise Falatach joined Hostettler as the
only players to start all 18 matches, even
though she was just a freshman. Falatach tied
for second on the team in scoring with 3 goals
and 4 assists for 10 points.
Sophomores Daryl Estremera and Kara
Ciacchiru, also figure prominently in
Edinboro's blueprint for success. Estremera
started 12 matches. Ciacchini is a player who
had her ups and downs a year ago, but
proved her scoring ability with 4 goals and a
pair of assists to tie Falatach for second in
scoring with 10 points. She may also see time
at forward.
Two other returnees provide more depth
and experience. Lisa Guesman, one of only
three seniors on the roster, played in 16
matches with one assist. A year earlier she
started 11 contests. Emily Monte appeared in
all 18 matches, with one start.
Rachel Johnson, a transfer from
Cleveland State, could help the Fighting Scots
in the midfield or on defense. As a freshman,
Johnson appeared in 16 matches for the
Vikings, with 12 starts.
Another newcomer who could factor in
the midfield immediately is freshman Jamie
Monica, from Lexington (OH) High School.

Forwards
Edinboro still seeks a scorer the likes of
Jamie Tekotte, a current assistant coach who
scored a school-record 21 goals in 2003. Much
of the scoring load has been handled by the
midfield, and Kagiavas hopes his forwaqrds
can pick up the slack this year.
Angie de Almeida and Shauna Wolf each
contributed four goals and an assist a year
ago. de Almeida is a sophomore who started
13 matches. Wolf transferred to Edinboro a
year ago from Coastal Carolina, and lived up
to expectations while starting 11 of the first 12
matches. She missed the last six contests due
to injury.
Stacy Hyziewicz is another player look
ing to rebound from an injury. She missed the
2004 season with a tom anterior cmciate liga
ment. She was in her first year at Edinboro
after transferring from Rhode Island, where
she was on the track team.
Katie DeLuca is a sophomore who con
tributed one goal in 16 matches. Kagiavas
feels she is ready to play a much bigger role
this season.

Pa. State Athletic Conference
The Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference,
with 54 years of organized
competition, has established
itself as one of the most
respected NCAA Division II
athletic conferences.
In its history the
PSAC has laid claim to 36
NCAA team champions and
195 individual title winners, giving credence to its fine
athletic tradition. The conference has prospered on the
national level in recent years, as it annually has close to
one-third of the it's teams participated in NCAA post
season competition. The PSAC also distinguishes itself
as the second-largest Division II conference in terms of
sports sponsorship, awarding titles for 22 different
sports.
Proud of its athletic success, the league has also
thrived in an academic success. The number of stu
dent-athletes designated by the conference as "ScholarAthletes" ~ those who have attained a cumulative
grade point average of 3.25 or better — has increased
every year since that standard was adopted in 1995-96.
The impressive number of yearly designees reached
1,366 in 2004-05, 125 more than the previous year.
Furthermore, the most recent figure is nearly double
the total of those in the mid-1990's. Additionally, 14
PSAC student-athletes combined to earn CoSIDA
Academic All-America Awards last season.
The PSAC was organized in 1951 for the purpose
of promoting and adininistering men's athletic pro
grams within the 14 state teachers colleges in the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In 1977, due to the
interest and growth of women's athletics, the confer
ence was restructured to provide for women's pro
grams.
From its inception, each conference member
selected its own competitive division within the
NCAA. In 1980, however, the presidents voted to
reclassify the entire conference to Division II. Although

This is Edinboro University

all 14 institutions are members of NCAA Division II,
