RAY HEARS
Ray Hears 9 nationally famed ba^etball coach
at the University of Tennessee, is featured as
tonight's ksynote speaker. Hailed as basketball’s
master of defense, Hears has ccanpiled a 250-75
mark in 13 years of college coaching and has moved
into the No. 2 spot behind Kentucky's Adolph Rupp
on the list of all-time winningest college basket
ball coaches.
Under Hears' guidance for the past 7 years,
Tennessee cage teams have risen to the top in the
tough Southeastern Conference which features such
powerhouses as Alabama, L.S.U., Kentucky, Vander
bilt, Auburn, Georgia and "Ole Hiss." Since 1964
the Vols have finished lower than second place in
the conference only once, that being a third place
spot in 1966. Tennessee captured the Southeastern
Conference crown to cap the Volunteers' 1967 cam
paign.
"We're proud of our defense and spend long
hours in practice trying to perfect it," revealed
Hears. "A lot of people have the idea we hold the
hqll and delay action,
but we studied films of
some of our games and learned that our opponents
ng more time trying to set up their shots
were
than we were.
When a race-horse team can't get
its shots away, we regeu^d that as a tribute to our
defense."
Use of sound defensive principles are re
vealed throughout Hears' coaching past.
In the
last 5 years, the Volunteers have twice won the
NCAA's national defensive championship.
While
coaching at Wittenburg University in Springfield,
Ohio, Hears' Tigers won the NCAA college division
championship in 1961 and finished first in the na
tion 4 straight years in the categoiy of fewest
points surrendered.
