The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Fighting
Scots enter the 1995 football season hoping to continue an
impressive run of success the program has enjoyed the past
seven years under the leadership of head coach Tom Holl
man.
Edinboro has not only established one of the premier
football programs in the PSAC, but the Fighting Scots also
have enjoyed their share of national recognition in recent
years as well. With 13 starters returning from last year's 7-3

boro enters the upcoming campaign ranked among the
nation's elite once again in several pre-season polls.
Here's a glance at a few Highlights of the Hollman Era ...

Now in the final year of his presi
dency, Foster F. Diebold will retire in
the summer of 1996 after having
served Edinboro University of Penn
sylvania, the State System of Higher
Education and the people of Pennsyl
vania for 17 years as the 14th chief
executive officer of the institution of
higher learning that has come to
acclaim under his leadership as one
of Pennsylvania's and the nation's
finest. Only one other chief executive,
Joseph Cooper, who was principal of
the then Edinboro State Normal
School for 29 years between 1863 and
1892, has served a longer term of
office than President Diebold.
Much has been accomplished
during President Diebold's tenure.
He has brought a vigorous educa
tional and moral leadership, a
strengthening of the spirit of commu
nity, a clear sense of mission and pur
pose, and a new dimension of
multiculturalism and diversity. The
University has returned to and main
tained financial health. Academic
programs have been emphasized and
improved, with more than 100 degree
programs now offered. A renewed
commitment to teacher education
came with his establishment of the
Center for Excellence in Teaching.
Significant facilities and grounds
improvements have been achieved,
with several of the historic campus
structures restored to their original
splendor, a student union expansion
completed, and an Alumni House
constructed. Enrollment gains have
been unprecedented in both numbers
and academic quality. International
linkage agreements with 15 educa
tional institutions and organizations
in four countries have positioned
Edinboro University as a leader in
international education both in the
U.S. and abroad. And Edinboro Uni
versity's program for students with
disabilities, one of the first in the
nation, continues to enjoy wide
recognition as one of the finest at any
college or university in the country.
The Orange, New Jersey, native is
a graduate of Monmouth College and

also holds a master of arts in educa
tional administration from Setpn Hall
University. He has met coursework
requirements for a doctorate in edu
cation at Rutgers University and is
currently completing the dissertation
requirement for the Ph.D. program in
higher education at the University of
Pittsburgh.
Prior to his presidency of Edin
boro University, President Diebold
was president of the University of
Alaska from 1977 to 1979. Before that,
he was executive secretary to the
Board of Regents and special assis
tant to the president of the University
of Alaska Statewide System. From
1969 to 1976, he was director of
Development and Planning at Kean
College in New Jersey and a member
of the graduate faculty at that institu
tion; and from 1965 to 1969, he was
assistant superintendent of the Nep
tune Township (New Jersey) Public
Schools.
Recognized for his extensive
experience in the field of education
management. President Diebold's
scholarly achievements in the disci
pline of applied ethics in higher edu
cation deserve special mention. The
model statement he authored for the
American Association of State Col
leges and Universities, "Ethical Prac
tices for College Presidents," was
unanimously adopted by that profes
sional organization and published as
policy for the chief executives of its
nearly 400 member institutions
nationwide. It is the first formally
adopted ethical practices and policy
statement for higher education presi
dents.
President Diebold has been hon
ored by the Government of Pakistan
with the awarding of the degree of
Doctor of Laws (honoris causa), pre
sented at the Government House in
the City of Karachi. The ceremony
was attended by the presidents of the
several Pakistani universities holding
linkage agreements with Edinboro
University, as well as many highranking officials of the Government
5

Foster F. Diebold
of Pakistan and U.S. diplomatic offi
cials.
A staunch advocate of a
statewide system of public universi
ties in Pennsylvania, President
Diebold supported the enabling legis
lation for the State System of Higher
Education (Act 188 of 1982) and saw
the State System come to existence in
1983 as a member of the transition
team. He currently serves on the Sys
tem's Executive Council of Presidents
and on the boards of the Pennsylva
nia Academy for the Profession of
Teaching, the Pennsylvania State Ath
letic Conference, and the Dixon Uni
versity Center at Harrisburg.
President Diebold's stature in
American higher education has been
recognized by several high-level
appointments. He was named to the
National Committee on U.S.-China
Relations, the leading national orga
nization devoted to building con
structive relationships between the
two countries. He was also appointed
to the Leadership Council of the
Northeast-Midwest Institute, a
regional component of the Center for
Regional Policy, and to the Pennsyl
vania Humanities Council, the pri
vate, non-profit group promoting
statewide public understanding of
the humanities.

In January 1988, Edinboro Uni
versity hired Tom Hollman, Athens,
Ohio, as its eleventh head football
coach in the school's history. Hollman
came to Edinboro from Ohio Univer
sity, where he was the defensive coor
dinator.
Hollman, beginning his eighth
year, has the Scot program back in
the national spotlight. At Edinboro,
he has earned 52 wins against just 22
losses and two ties and owns an
impressive 31-9-2 slate against the
PSAC Western Division. Throughout
his seven year career at Edinboro, he
has never had a losing season. In
addition, he has coached two Harlon
Hill Award finalists, and the schools
career leaders in passing, rushing,
receiving and interceptions. The Scots
have advanced to post-season play
four of the past six years.
In 1989, he was named the top
coach in the East Region by the
National Football Coaches Associa
tion and also tabbed the top coach in
the PSAC West. In 1990, he guided
the Scots to their first-ever NCAA II
playoff win as Edinboro routed Vir
ginia Union and advanced to the
national quarterfinals.
"As a coach, I have been fortu
nate to coach at many different levels,
from high school to Division I. The
Division II level here at Edinboro is
very appealing to me in relation to
my career goals. It is a great feeling to
be a head coach at this level."
Hollman's educational back
ground begins with a high school
diploma from Memorial High School
in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his
undergraduate degree in education
from Ohio Northern University in
1968. Three years later Hollman
received his master of science degree
in education from Xavier University
in Cincinnati, Ohio.

football team and a two-year per
former as a defensive back and offen
sive end during his junior and senior
years. He holds the school record
with 13 career interceptions and
earned All-American and All-District
honors during the 1966 and 1967 sea
sons. Hollman also lettered in base
ball for three years during his stay at
Ohio Northern.
A chronological look at Holl
man's coaching career begins in 1968
as an assistant coach at Sidney High
School in Sidney, Ohio. From there,
Hollman moved on to Greenville
High School in Ohio where he
became head coach from 1971-73. His
Greenville squads posted an impres
sive 26-2-2 mark during his threeyear stay.
Hollman then moved on to Fre
mont Ross High School as head coach
for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where
his squad recorded 15 wins against
three setbacks and two ties. Fremont
was the Buckeye Conference champ
in 1974, imbeaten at 9-0-1.
In 1976, Hollman moved on to
the collegiate ranks where he was the
defensive coordinator for his alma
mater at Ohio Northern University.
The following year, Hollman
accepted the head coach position at
Wooster College (OH) and guided his
squad to the best four-year record in
the school history (24-11-1).

1995 Preview - Reloading or Rebuilding?
Replacing players each year is a chal
lenge - but replacing greatness is another.
Gone from a season ago is the school's
all-time leading rusher, passer and inter
ception leader.
Whether 1995 turns into a season of
reloading or rebuilding remains a
mystery but it is likely the program's
foundation and well-deserved reputation
will have the Scot program back in the
limelight again this fall.
Entering his eighth season directing
the Boro fortunes, head coach Tom Hollman returns 14 starters and 33 lettermen
to a squad that posted a 7-3 mark a year
ago. In '94, the Scots earned a #17 rank
ing at season's end marking the sixth con
secutive season Edinboro had finished
among the nation's top 20. Since '91, the
Plaid has earned two trips to the NCAA
n championship field of 16 and posted an
impressive 30-12-1 overall record.

The task at hand in '95 will be filling
the shoes of record-setting All-Americans
Larry Jackson, Jody Dickerson and Steve
Russell. What makes this season even
more of challenge is the Boro must look
for replacements while playing, arguably,
the toughest schedule in school history.
Difficult from the beginning, the Scots
open with a home contest against Hills
dale, Division II's winningest program.
The 10-game ledger also features non
conference road games at Division I-AA
Appalachian State and Division II power
Portland State, while the Boro's cross
over home game from the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern
Division is vastly improved Mansfield.
The divisional slate consists of home
games against Lock Haven, California
and lUP whereas the Boro treks to Shippensburg. Slippery Rock and Clarion. A
strong road team the past three regular
seasons (12-2-1), die Scots successes in '95
will again be based on their abilities to
continue winning away from Sox Harri
son Stadium.

A Breakdown of Personnel
Skill Positions

/

Traditionally a strength for the team
has turned into the biggest question mark
for '95. With the departure of Jackson and
Dickerson, the Scots lose over 12,000
yards of total offense. Simply stated, the
Boro's success offensively will parallel the
progression of junior quarterback Chris
Hart. A backup the past two seasons.
Hart has played in 16 games, completing
38% of his passes for 112 yards, one score
and one interception. The running back
spot is solid with the return of Tony Brin
son (221 yards, 2 TDs) and the addition of
highly-touted Gerald Thompson. Look
for the Scots to rely heavily on the run
ning game to assist Hart's development.
The wideout spot is open with the depar
ture of big-play man Lateef Walters. Terry
Roberts, who has averaged nearly 27
yards per catch the past two years, must
step up in '95.

Offensive Line
If who is throwing, running or catch
ing the ball is a question, then the founda
tion for '95 will be the return of the entire
offensive line from a year ago. All-Ameri
can tackle Jeremy O'Day is outstanding
and will team with center Det Betti,
guards Chad Wallick and Chris Barney
and tackle Tom Lavis to secure the attack.
Jesse Trevino also has plenty of game
experience from a year ago. Tight end
Todd Henne (15 receptions, 158 yards, 2
TDs) was named second team PSAC-West
a year ago and returns as the squad's top
pass catcher. John Sabo (6, 53,1 td) is also
solid.

Matt Gentile (46 tackles) and A1 Bass (32,
2 recoveries). Rich Jones (21 stops, 6
games) is also back while junior college
transfer Jeff Traversy should step in and
have an immediate impact.

Linebackers
All conference performer Michael
Sims returns to anchor the second line of
defense. Sims led the squad with 124 total
tackles a year ago including 85 solo hits.
He was in on four tackles for loss and
intercepted one pass. With the departure
of All-American Michael Edwards, the
Scots may face a void here. Jerry Roberts,
who recorded 16 hits in a reserve role a
year ago, may be the one to step up.
Emery Martin (9 stops, 3 games) and
transfer Vanroy Williams (6-2, 235) could
also play major roles for the Scots.

Secondary
Gone is All-American Steve Russell,
the team's all-time interception leader but
three other starters, with plenty of biggame experience return. Both cornerbacks, Marty Williams and Keith
Cushenberry, earned second team all
west selections in '94. Williams was
fourth on the squad with 68 stops includ
ing four tackles for loss, one interception
and six deflections. Cushenberry regis
tered 36 tackles and was second on the
team with two picks. Rick Walker, a parttime starter through his career, is looking
to recover from last year's shoulder
injury. He contributed 39 hits in just six
games in '94.

Specialties
Defensive Line
Another crew which returns intact is
the defensive front. All-American end Pat
Schuster (65 tackles, 10 sacks) is closing in
on the school's all-time sack record. Last
season, Schuster registered 22 total tack
les behind the line for -103 yards. All con
ference end Bryan Lambert (73 stops, 7
sacks) also returns along with tackles
11

The Boro faces two holes to fill with
the graduation of veteran placekicker
Scott Rupert and the departure of Eric
Wagner. In addition, with the graduation
of Russell and Walters, the Scots must
find replacements to return kicks and
pimts.

Progression of the student-athlete
has always been a priority for Coach Tom
Hollman and his staff. This past year, the
tradition of success on the field and in the
classroom continued for the Fighting Scot
football program. A pair of starters, tight
end Todd Henne and safety Rick Walker,
not only had quality years on the gridiron
for the Scots but were recognized as
national scholar-athletes by College Foot
ball Preview magazine. The pair were also
honored as top student-athletes by the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
and Edinboro University. Both students
currently own cumulative grade point
marks of better than 3.5. In 1994, Henne
earned PSAC-West second team all star
honors for his 15 catches for 158 yards
and a pair of scores while Walker record
ed 39 tackles, 20 solo, in just six games
due to a shoulder injury.

schedule in school history, going 1 -1 in their first two games. Since then, the Boro has
posted five straight wins, including a victory over a Top 10 team—26-7 over Portland
(OR) State University — and four straight wins in the PSAC-West.
Indiana also started their season with a tough non-conference schedule, going 1 -2 in
their first three games before winning their last five games.

Hollman also posted a 24-11-1 record at the College of Wooster to toing his overall
coaching record to 82-34-3 in 11-plus seasons, a .702 winning percentage.
Frank Cignetti (lUP, 1960), is currently in his 10th year at Indiana. On Saturday, the
Indians' boss will be shooting for his 100th win at lUP, as he holds an impressive 9919-1 (.836) record as the all-time wiimingest coach at the school.
Cignetti's numbers against the PSAC-West are even more staggering, as he owns a 53-3-1 (.939) record against conference foes.
The last conference loss came in 1992 when Clarion upended the Indians, 35-26. Since then, the Indians have posted 15 straight
conference wins. Technically, Clarion later had to forfeit the contest because of an ineligible player, giving lUP the win. Edinboro
tied Indiana that same year, marking the last time lUP didn't win a PSAC-West game. Discounting the Clarion game in '92, Cignetti
has not lost to a conference opponent since September 23,1989, when Edinboro beat the Indians, 37-0. All in all, Cignetti's non
losing streak in regular season conference games stands at 37.
Cignetti has led Indiana to the NCAA Division II national championship game twice (1990 and '93) and to the national playoffs
seven times. He has been selected PSAC-West Coach of the Year on five occasions.
Cignetti also served as the head coach at West Virginia University from 1976-79 where he posted a record of 17-27, bringing his
overall collegiate coaching record to 116-46-1 (.715).

The Indians own a 43-16-4 advantage in a series which dates back to 1926. lUP has
won the last two meetings, 21-7 last year, and 31-24 two seasons ago. In 1992,jthetwo
teams tied at 21, marking the last official time.IUP failed to win a PSAC-West
conference match-up.
The last time Edinboro defeated Indiana came during the 1989 campaign, when the
Scots handed lUP a 37-0 loss on their way to a PSAC-West crown later that year. In
addition to their two straight victories, the Indians have won 11 out of the last 13 games
between these two rivals, dating back to a 6-3 Edinboro victory in 1982.

EDINBORO AT HOME, INDIANA ON THE ROAD
Edinboro has posted a 30-5-1 record at Sox harrison Stadium during the Hollman
era. The Scots are 3-0 at home this season, outscoring opponents 104-33 at Sox
Harrison. Indiana has played only two of their eight games away from home this year,
but the Indians have won them both—28-25 at Grand Valley and 44-20 at California.

THOMPSON LEADS PSAC IN RUSHING
Edinboro running back Gerald Thompson, a redshirt freshman from Pittsburgh
(Woodland Hills) continues to impress in his rookie season. Through seven games,
Thompson has mshed for 941 yards to lead all PSAC rushers and rank fifth in NCAA
Division II with an average of 134.4 rushing yards per game. He has rushed for 139
yards or more in five straight games, leading the Scots to five straight wins. His average
of 6.0 yards per carry is among the best in the conference, as is his eight touchdowns
(7 rushing and a 75-yard TD reception). The only time Thompson failed to gain 100
yards was in the Scots' loss to Appalachian State, when he suffered a foot injury (turf
toe) and carried just six times for 27 yards. In six games against Division II opponents,
Thompson is averaging 152.3 yards per game.
Tony Brinson provides the Scots with a nice one-two running back punch, adding
56.0 yards/gm on the ground. Brinson has scored two rushing touchdowns, and has
caught 11 passes for 107 yards and a one touchdown.

MORE ON THE BORO OFFENSE
Edinboro wideout Gilbert Grantlin also is turning in a solid season. Grantlin has
caught 28 passes for 561 yards and seven touchdowns. Grantlin is averaging 80.1
receiving yards per game, ranking him fifth among PSAC pass catchers. The junior also
ranks seventh in the PSAC in kickoff returns (11 returns, 22.6-yard average) and sixth
in the conference in all-purpose yardage (136.3 yards per game).
Junior quarterback Chris Hart calls the shots for Edinboro behind a veteran line that
returned all seven starters from a year ago. Hart has completed 80 of 161 passes (49
percent) for 1,146 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He ranks seventh
in the PSAC with a 115.1 efficiency ranking.

THE BORO DEFENSE
Much of Edinboro's success this year can be attributed to the solid play of the
defense. Throw out the Appalachian State game, and the Scots have allowed just 10.0
points per game against NCAA Division II foes.
Senior defensive end Pat Schuster, a consensus All-American last season and a
strong candidate to earn post-season accolades again this season, leads the team with
66 tackles, 43 solos, and 11 tackles for loss (-24 yds). He also leads the Scots with 10
sacks (-99) and is the school's all-time leader with 32. On the other end of the defensive
line, senior Bryan Lambert was named PSAC-West Defensive Player of the Week for
his eight tackle (six solo), four sack (-27 yards) performance against Slippery Rock. On
the season, Lambert has 54 tackles (32 solo), seven sacks (-51 yards), six tackles for loss
(-11 yards), one forced fumble and one recovery (returned 55 yards for a TD).
Senior linebacker Michael Sims is second to Schuster with 62 tackles. Thirty-two
of Sims' stops have been solos. In last year's lUP/EUP match-up, Sims posted a seasonhigh 16 tackles in a 21-7 loss. Junior safety Ron Allen has 57 tackles, including 37
solos. Sims and Allen are both tied for second in the PSAC with four interceptions.

A LOOK AT INDIANA
lUP's offense is similar to the Boro's, relying on a strong running game and a steady passing attack. On the ground, sem'or tailback
Dennis Robinson has rushed for 823 yards on 143 attempts (102.9 yds/gm-5.8 yds/att) in the Indian's first eight games. Lastseason,
Robinson rushed for 171 yards and one touchdown on 33 attempts in lUP’s victory. Other threats in the Indiana backfield are senior
Vaughn Mosely (87 att-390 yds-2 TD) and redshirt freshman James Suber (60-467-5).
The passing game is anchored by senior quarterback Ken Ferguson (72 comp-138 att-10 TD-4INT), who has thro\Vn for 1,152
yards and completed 52.2 percent of his passes. His favorite targets includd^junior flankers Tony Hardy (24 catches- 369 yds-2 td)
and Mario Hardison (18-256-3), and senior split end Taun Henderson (11-290-4).
Junior All-American defensive end Jeff Tumage spearheads the lUP defense. Tumage has a team-high 60 tackles, including 38
solos and eight tackles for loss (-34 yds). He recorded 11 tackles (9 solo), and two tackles for loss in last year's game, earning PSACWest Defensive Player of the Week honors. Senior strong safety Ruben Monroe has recorded 53 tackles and an lUP-best six pass
break-ups. Senior linebacker Omar Stewart and junior free safety Reggie Carter have both added 42 tackles.

UP NEXT
Edinboro hosts Mansfield University next Saturday (Nov. 4), before closing out the regular season at Clarion. Mansfield (0-7)
entertains Cheyney (0-7-1) this week. Indiana will host Clarion and travel to Lock Haven to close out the season.

MEMORABLE GAMES IN THE lUP-EDINBORO SERIES
Though Indiana holds a considerable lead in the all-time series (43-16-4), these two rivals have played some exceptional
games throughout the Hollman/Cignetti era. Here are a look at some of those memorable contests:
1989
EDINBORO - 37
INDIANA - 0
As the country was suffering the effects of Hurricane Hugo,
so too were the Scots and Indiana during a scoreless first half. In
the second half it was not the weather, but Edinboro running
back Elbert Cole who took control. Cole scored on runs of seven,
seven and 37 to put the Boro up for good. Cole's second and third
rans were set up on great defensive efforts by Matt Miller, who
recovered a fumbled lUP snap, and Chip Conrad, who sacked
Indian quarterback Tony Alliucci on fourth down and three.
Other Edinboro scores included quarterback Hal Galupi's 5-yd
run and mnning back Chris Conway's 65-yard scamper.

unranked at 6-3. Indiana's Jay Murphy crossed the plain first
when Jay Murphy went over the top from one yard out, but
missed the PAT. Edinboro charged back when Derrick Russell
shot up the middle to score from 9 yards away, making it 7-6
Edinboro. Russell hit paydirt again, this time from one yard,
capping a 90-yard drive after Georj Lewis recovered an lUP
fumble. Aliucci struck back for the Indians, hitting Johnny
White and Theo Turner on respective three and 14-yard touchdown
passes, making it 20-14 lUP. Scott Rupert hit a 28-yard field goal
to close the gap, but the Indians' Michael Mann, who rushed for
214 yards on the day, took over by helping lUP run out the clock.

1990
INDIANA-36
EDINBORO-29
Perhaps the best game ever in the series between these two
teams, the Indians came out on top in this see-saw affair. Down
14-7 in the second quarter, the Boro went up on top 22-14 after
two Galupi to Ernest Priester touchdowns, and a John Baumann
field goal. lUP's Charles Peoples returned the ensuing kickoff
98 yards, and scored on a 14-yard pass from Tony Aliucci to put
the Indians up 28-22 at the half. Edinboro's Paul Stone caught
a 9-yard pass from Galupi late in the third, but lUP got the capper
when Michael Mann scored on a three-yard run midway through
the fourth quarter to close out this classic.

1992
INDIANA-21
EDINBORO-21
Indiana dotted the scoreboard first as Scott Woods hit Scott
McClellan on a four-yard pass. Edinboro then exploded, scoring
the game's next 21 points to take a two touchdown lead. Larry
Jackson evened the score at seven in the first quarter on a 10-yard
run. In the second stanza. Boro quarterback Jody Dickerson got
hot, hitting Wrentie Martin from 11 yards away, and Jackson on
a 12-yard pass to give the Scots a commanding halftime lead. In
the second half, lUP refused to die. Woods hit JeMone Smith on
a 6-yard scoring pass with 1:48 in the third to pull the Indians
within seven. Trailing late in the fourth. Woods struck again, this
time hooking up with Derrick Smith from 16 yards out with only
26 seconds showing on the clock. lUP decided to play for the tie,
and Mike Geary's extra point kick ended this one in a stalemate.

1990

INDIANA -14
EDINBORO - 7
NCAA DIVISION H PLAYOFF GAME
Indiana got on the board first when Alliucci found John White
in the end zone on fourth and nine, making it 7-0 Indians.
Following an lUP punt, Edinboro turned the ball over and
Alliucci took advantage with a one-yard TD run. The Boro made
it close when Priester hauled in a touchdown pass from Galupi
in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough. It wasn't as exciting
as the first game, but it was the same result - lUP by seven.
1991
INDIANA-20
EDINBORO-17
"You can throw out the records when these two teams meet"
is the best way to sum up this game, as lUP entered Sox Harrison
Stadium 9-0 and No. 1 in the country and the Scots stood

1993
INDIANA-31
EDINBORO-24
On a cold and snowy day in Edinboro, lUP got the game's final
score to pull out another nailbiter. Edinboro's Jody Dickerson hit
Marcus Griffin on a 20-yard touchdown pass with only 7:05
remaining to give the Boro a 24-23 lead. However, lUP was not
about to be upset, as Scott Woods hit Theo Turner to c^ a l2play, 64-yard drive with only 2:58 left. A two-point conversion ‘
and a strong defensive stands by the Indians iced the game.
Indiana was led by the man, that is All-American Michael
Mann, who rushed for 219 yards and two touchdowns for the
victors.

Thank you,
Edinboro University
Walker Bros. Buick-Chevrolet has been in the automobile business in Edinboro since
1916 making us one of the oldest dealers in the country. However, we are mere youngsters
compared to Edinboro University. Thru the decades our families have watched the school
grow and mature into today's University. Not by accident, we have seen the town of Edin^
boro grow and mature at the same time, with much of that growth being former Edinboro
students who stayed and made homes here after graduating. For this we say, "thank you,
Edinboro University."
Edinboro University offers much more to the region than a fine education at a rea^
sonable price. Almost daily there is either a cultural or athletic event right h^re in our own
backyard providing great entertainment. Besides the entertainment, many/6f us use the
physical facilities of the University. For this we say, "thank you, Edinboro University."
Finally, for those of us in business in the Edinboro area, the University provides a
great economic benefit. Local patronage from University employees, students and all the
spinoff employment created by the University is what makes us able to be a major sponsor of
Edinboro athletics and today's game. For all this we say, "thank you, Edinboro University."
Sincerely,

Starting his 10th season at the Boro,
Scott has coached running backs and the
defensive backfield in year's past and
now enters his second season directing
the offensive line. Under his guidance a
year ago, the Scots' front line cleared the
way for over 450 yards of total offense
per game and conference best 250 yards
per game rushing. In his many capacities,
he has guided the fortimes of All-Ameri
cans Steve Russell, Michael Wallis, Wade
Smith, Georj Lewis, Mike Barnes, Elbert
Cole and Jeremy O'Day.
Scott came to Edinboro from Ohio
State University, where he coached
receivers and running backs. Prior to his
start at OSU, Browning coached at Wor
thington and Dayton-Fairview high
schools in Ohio, from 1979-81. Then, as a

Dan Gierlak enters his ninth season
as a full-time coach, shifting his responsi
bilities from coaching the running backs
to linebacker coach. He was formerly the
head women's softball coach for the Scots
and led the squad to the PSAC playoffs in
1990.
Gierlak came to the 'Boro from Thiel
College (Pa.) where he coached the defen
sive secondary for the 1984 season. Dan, a
starter and three-year letterwinner for the
Plaid in the secondary, moved on to the
semi-pro ranks with the Chicago Cow
boys. During his short stint with the
Cowboys, Gierlak's squad gained nation
al championship honors in 1984 and run

ner up nationally in the 1985 season. Gier
lak brings both playing and coaching
experience to the staff, giving the Scot
players an added plus on the offensive
side of the ball. As backfield coach, he has
guided former Harlon Hill finalist Elbert
Cole and Boro All-Americans Lester Frye
and Larry Jackson.
Originally from Buffalo, New York,
Dan graduated from Edinboro with a
degree in health and physical education.

immediate impact. Last season he headed
two defensive end standouts in Bryan
Lambert and Pat Schuster. Lambert was a
second team All-PSAC performer, while
Schuster earned recognition as a firstteam selection, and as an All-American.
Before coming to Edinboro, Cronk served
as the former position coach for tight
ends at Indiana University. He spent two
seasons with the Hoosiers, both of them
as a graduate assistant to head coach Bill
Mallory. His first season in Bloomington,
Cronk spent time assisting the defensive
coordinator with the linebackers, and he

also helped in the recruiting duties. While
at lU, he graduated with a master's
degree in physical education administra
tion. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana,
Cronk was an assistant coach at Carroll
Consolidated High School, handling the
special teams and defensive ends.
Cronk spent his playing days at
Wabash College, where he was an honor
able mention performer in the Indiana
College Athletic Conference, and cap
tained the 1991 league championship
squad. He graduated from Wabash with a
bachelor of arts degree in political sci
ence. He and his wife, Karla, reside in

Jack Benedict Named 1995 PSAC Media Award-Winner
Jack Benedict, sports director of
1160/WCCS Radio, Homer City, has been
selected the 1995 witmer of the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
(P.SA.C.) George Heaslip Media Award.
Benedict is the seventh recipient
of the annual award presented by the sports
information directors of the P.SA.C. to a
media professional for his or her efforts in
covering Conference student-athletes and
teams.
1995-96 represents Benedict’s
28th year of sportscasts of lUP football and
men’s basketball, and on television for
several years when lUP produced a weekly
football program on KBL-TV, Pittsburgh,
that was carried by the PRIME cable
network in a several-state area. He has
produced a daily morning sports show first
with WDAD, Indiana, from 1969 to 1989
and then with WCCS.
In the process of broadcasting lUP
events, from across the state and literally all
parts of the United States, Benedict has

described games involving every P.S.A.C.
university. Followers of all such teams have
invariably commented on the accurate,
objective manner in which he has reported
on the competition.
Originally from Mount Pleasant, in
Westmoreland County, he first worked seven
years (1962-69) as sports director of WCVI
Radio in neighboring Connellsville.
How well he has performed was
most recently denoted by his earning the
Peimsylvania Association of Broadcasting
award for his coverage of the 1993
lUP/North Alabama NCAA Division II
national championship football game. This
was his fourth PAB sports award; he was
also recognized in 1980 for “Best Public
Service in Pennsylvania” for a report on the
homeless.
Inducted into the Indiana County
Hall of Fame this past spring (1995), in part
as a result of his avid interest in American
Legion baseball as well, he has been heard
nationwide by reporting and interviews done

for the CBS
radio network.
As a
radio
personality,
Benedict joins
Jim Doyle of
W H L M ,
Bloomsburg,
who received
the
Heaslip
Award in 1993.
Recognized
Jack Benedict
last year was
Tom Rose, sports editor of the Washington
(Pa.) Observer-Reporter.
Other wiimers, in order since the
honor was initiated in 1989, have been
sports writers Ray Kienzl of the Pittsburgh
Press, Ross Nevel of the Lock Haven
Express (a former sports information
director at LHU), Skip Hutter of the
Harrisburg Patriot-News and Pete Zapadka
of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Sports Medicine Staff and Marching Band

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
and
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education
The Pennsylvania State Ath
letic Conference (PSAC) was
organized in 1951 for the purpose
of promoting and administering
men's athletic programs within
the fourteen state teachers col
leges in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania.
In 1977, due to the interest
and growth of women's athletics,
the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference was restructured to
provide for women's programs.

1995 Sports Medicine Staff: Front row (L-R): Mary Ann Frank, Tracy Harbula, Sarah Johnson, Patty Lindh,
Robin Pusateri. Back row: Gary Hanna, Theresa Belesky, Brandyn Charlton, Kevin Heid, Dr. Richard Rahner,
Brian Page, Mike Buscemi, Julie Neiderer, George Roberts.

From its inception, each Con
ference member selected its own
competitive division within the
National Collegiate Athletic Asso
ciation (NCAA). In 1980, howev
er, the presidents of the schools
voted to reclassify to Division II.
In 1983, all member institu
tions were granted university sta
tus as a result of Legislative Act
188 which formed the Pennsylva
nia State System of Higher Educa
tion (SSHE). This system now
enrolls in excess of 99,000 stu
dents. The alumni of the SSHE
number more than 402,000,
including 287,000 in Pennsylva
nia. The chancellor of the SSHE is
Dr. James H. McCormick.

The 1995 Edinboro University Spirit of the Scots Marching Band is under the direction of Dr. Gary S. Grant. Bruce Best is the pipe
instructor and John Fleming is the faculty advisor. Drum majors are Diann Cemeans and Chris Snyder. Tam captains are Alicia Montedoro and Jeimifer Zampogna and silk captain is Dawn Smith.
This year's band is 125 strong and is proud to annoimce another exciting performance schedule. In addition to performing at
home football games, they will travel to Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. The Spirit of the Scots will participate in local and
regional parades, the Tournament of Bands Championship in Washington, Permsylvania, and at the September 17 Buffalo Bills football
game.
The Edinboro University Spirit of the Scots is proud of the tradition of active student involvement and leadership. This year the
section leaders of the band are Ed Best, Sherrie Black, Michelle Bockstoce, Chad Danka, Kim Hartman, Mike Konieczko, Andy McKay,
Jeff Mortimer, Alison Reichenfeld, Rob Rohrbach, Joe Sensor, Erin Stahlman, and Aaron Strausser.

One of the largest conferences
in the nation, the PSAC is under
the leadership of a board of direc
tors (the 14 university presidents).
The Conference also employs a
commissioner. Dr. Charles A.
'Tod' Eberle.

The PSAC sponsors 20 men's
and women's intercollegiate
sports. For men the PSAC offers
baseball, basketball, cross country,
football, golf, soccer, swimming,
tennis, track and field, and
wrestling. For women the sports
include basketball, cross country,
field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and
field and volleyball.
Although all 14 institutions
are members of NCAA Division
II, nine schools have elected to
participate at the Division I level
in selected sports.
The PSAC is one of the
nation's most respected Division
II conferences. Annually the
PSAC places several teams in var
ious NCAA top 20 polls. In addi
tion, it has produced numerous
national champions over the
years.

Chancellor James H. McCormick
