ed on 100 of 174 passes (58%) for 1,441 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He has tossed eight interceptions. Dickerson owns career Edin
boro standards in yards (6,867), touchdown passes (57), comple
tions (462) and attempts (875). His main receiving weapon Lateef
Walters (39 receptions, 675 yards, 8 TDs) missed the lUP game
with an ankle injury and is questionable. Ends Jeff Macintosh (6,
76, 1 TD) and Corey Keyes (11, 215, 1 TD) and Jackson (16, 224)
try to fill the void.
AIC tailback Rashid Thomas is not far behind Jackson with
his 133.1 yards per game rushing mark. He went over the 1,000
yard barrier last week against the Owls, rushing for 133 yards on
31 carries. For the year, Thomas totals 1,065 yards on 213 tries
and eight rushing scores. He has also latched on to three passes,
one for a score. Starting quarterback Keon Russell is the squad's
second leading rusher with 148 yards on 50 attempts. Through
the air, Russell is 27 of 60 (45%) for 306 yards and two scores.
Current backup Matt Sohns (42 of 104, 579, 4 TDs) got the call
early in the year. Top receiving targets are Joe Gaddy (17 rec.,
386,22.7 pc, 1 TD) and Jerry Watkins (16,139,2 TDs).

The Game
The Edinboro University Fighting Scot football team will
look to rebound from its recent lUP setback when they play host
to American International College today in non-conference
action.

The Records
The Scots, 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Ath
letic Conference Western Division, opened the year beating Hills
dale, 31-28, then dropped a week two decision to Mansfield,
31-26. Consecutive wins then followed against Elizabeth City, 280, Lock Haven 33-16, Shippensburg, 31-17, California, 67-6 and
Slippery Rock, 59-39, before the 21-7 defeat at the hands of the
Indians.
The Yellow Jackets of American International are 2-6
through eight games, with its most recent loss coming last week
at Southern Connecticut, 17-9. They started '94 with a win
against Cheyney, 44-36, then lost to Millersville, 32-6, and
Bloomsburg, 49-6. A victory over C.W. Post, 34-14, followed in
week four before dropping straight games to Ithaca, 17-13, pow
erful New Haven, 59-7, and I-AA Towson State, 48-6.

The Defenses
The Boro defensive played well enough to win against the
Indians last week and will be tested to control the run again
today.
The linebacking pair of Michael Sims (team high 94 stops, 5
for loss, 1 INT, 1 forced fumble) and Michael Edwards (83, 5 for
loss, 1 INT, 2 recovery) continue to flock to the football for the
Scots. They turned in 10 and 12 tackles respectively in the tough
loss at lUP.
Along the front, the Boro features tackles Matt Gentile (35, 4
for loss and 2 sacks), A1 Bass (19, 1 INT, 1 recovery) and Otha
Davidson (10, 2 sacks) along with ends Pat Schuster (47, 7 for
loss, team high 10 sacks) and Bryan Lambert (48, 4 sacks, 2 for
loss).
The Edinboro secondary continues to be led by All-Ameri
can safety Steve Russell. The school's all-time interception leader
with 18, Russell has four enemy picks this fall and has also
added 28 tackles. Keith Cushenberry (29, 1 INT), Jermaine Carswell (14, team high 9 deflections), Marty Williams (41, 1 INT)
and Rick Walker (27) all get time along the Boro's final line of
defense.
AIC end Jeff Cogell leads the team in tackles (87) and stops
for loss (15) and will be a challenge for the Boro offensive front.
Tackle Mike Duggan (59) is also solid across the interior.
Linebackers Jermaine Harris (73 tackles, 4 fumble recoveries, 2
INTs) and Billy Watson (69) are active as are free safety Micah
Pierce (63 tackles, 3 INTs) and cornerback Morgan Lee (45, 2
INT).

The Series
Today's games will mark the first meeting between the two
schools. AIC is an NCAA II independent affiliate located in
Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Coaches
Edinboro features seventh-year coach Tom Hollman while
the Yellow Jackets counter with Art Wilkins, in his first year.
Hollman, the 1989 Kodak East Region and PSAC Coach of the
Year, boasts an impressive 51-21-2 (.703%) mark with the Scots
including a 31-8-2 slate in the rugged PSAC West. His 11-year
collegiate coaching mark of 75-32-3 includes a 24-11-1, four-year
run at Wooster, Ohio. He has led the Scots to four NCAA II play
off appearances since 1988.
Wilkins is 2-6 with AIC, becoming the school's 12th head
coach in June of 1994. He had spent the past 22 football seasons
as an assistant, including stints with Penn State, Bucknell,
Appalachian State and the University of South Carolina.
The Offenses
Edinboro and AIC each feature top ground attacks, so expect
a true test for both defensive lines this weekend.
The Scots' Larry Jackson, three-time PSAC West Player of
the Week in '94, continues to be one of the nation's best with his
174.9 yards per game rushing mark. The Division II rushing lead
er the first seven weeks of the season, Jackson has been "held" to
consecutive performances of 128 yards and 113 against Slippery
Rock and lUP the past two weeks. His string of consecutive 100+
yard efforts now stands at 14 games. Through eight weeks, he
boasts 231 carries for 1,399 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Jackson's career rushing mark of 3,976 is an Edinboro standard.
Jackson ranks second in the country in all-purpose yards, netting
over 249 per game.
Up front, center Det Betti, guards Chad Wallick and Chris
Barney and tackles Tom Lavis and Jeremy O'Day (questionable,
ankle injury) continue to clear the way. Freshman Todd Fritz will
get the call if O'Day is not healthy. Fullbacks Chris Snyder (25
att., 126 yards, 3 TDs) and Saul Harrison (28, 157, 5 TDs) lead
block for Jackson and are both solid ball carriers.
Quarterback Jody Dickerson gets his 41st career start, a run
where he has led the Scots to an overall mark of 29-10-1 and a
pair of NCAA playoff appearances. On the year he has connect

Kicking Game/Specialties
The Scots look to Scott Rupert (5-7 fg, L 32, 27-32 PATs, 14
punts, 37.6 ypp) to handle both kicking jobs while AIC counters
with kicker Brian McManus (0-2 fg and 6 PATs) and punter Geoff
Whittier (49 pimts, 36 ypp).
Jackson is strong returning kickoffs (15, 371, 24.7, L40) while
Walters (7.2 pr) and Keyes (2.8 pr) are back on punts for the
Scots. The Yellow Jackets feature Watkins (21.0 ypr) back on
kicks, whereas Pierce (3.0 pr) and Kevin Palmer (12.0 pr) are
deep on punts.
Next Week
Edinboro returns home for its regular season finale against
PSAC West foe Clarion, while AIC battles Springfield College in
his first home game in five weeks.

President Foster F. Diebold
Now in his fifteenth year as pres
ident of Edinboro University of Penn
sylvania, Foster F. Diebold is the
fourteenth chief executive officer of
the institution of higher learning that
has come to acclaim in the last
decade as one of Pennsylvania's and
the nation's finest. He has brought a
vigorous educational and moral lead
ership, a strengthening of the spirit of
community, a clear sense of direction
and purpose, and a dimension of
multicultural pluralism and diversity.

Alaska from 1977 to 1979. Before that,
he was executive secretary to the
Board of Regents and special assis
tant to the president of the University
of Alaska Statewide System. From
1969 to 1976, he was director of
Development and Planning at Kean
College in New Jersey and a member
of the graduate faculty at that institu
tion; and from 1965 to 1969, he was
assistant superintendent of the Nep
tune Township (New Jersey) Public
Schools.

Much has been accomplished
during President Diebold's tenure.
The University has returned to finan
cial health. Significant facilities and
grounds improvements have been
achieved, with several of the historic
structures on campus restored to
their original splendor. Academic
programs have been emphasized and
improved, with more than 100 degree
offerings now available. Enrollment
gains have been unprecedented in
both numbers and academic quality.
International linkages have been
established with institutions in sever
al other countries, and Edinboro Uni
versity's program for students with
disabilities continues to garner
acclaim as one of the finest among all
colleges and universities in the Unit
ed States. Widely recognized as a
leader in education both here and
abroad. President Diebold has posi
tioned Edinboro University to meet
the challenges that will face public
higher education in the 21st century.

Recognized for his extensive
experience in the field of education
management. President Diebold's
scholarly achievements in the disci
pline of applied ethics in higher edu
cation deserve special mention. The
model statement he authored for the
American Association of State Col
leges and Universities, "Ethical Prac
tices for College Presidents," was
unanimously adopted by that profes
sional organization and published as
policy for the chief executives of its
nearly 400 member institutions
nationwide. It is the first formally
adopted ethical practices and policy
statement for higher education presi
dents.

The Orange, New Jersey, native is
a graduate of Monmouth College and
also holds a master of arts in educa
tional administration from Seton Hall
University. He has met coursework
requirements for a doctorate in edu
cation at Rutgers University and is
currently completing the dissertation
requirement for the Ph.D. program in
higher education at the University of
Pittsburgh.
Prior to his presidency of Edin

A staunch advocate of a
statewide system of public universi
ties in Pennsylvania, President
Diebold supported the enabling legis
lation for the State System of Higher
Education (Act 188 of 1982) and saw
the State System come to existence in

DEDICATION

Troyer Farms is proud to bring you the best in Pennsylvania Conference football. As a
major player in the regional snack food arena, we are keenly aware of the dedication and com
mitment which is vital in building a championship team. Edinboro University's administration,
coaching staff, and most of all, the school's young men who strive for excellence both on and
off the gridiron should be commended. Their joint effort ultimately brings us first class enter
tainment as spectators. It kindles a spirit of competition in all of us along with the ultra-satisfy
ing feeling which is associated with working extremely hard to achieve a goal.
Troyer Farms utilizes this same spirit in our quest for excellence. Our spectators are
our customers... the people we are committed to satisfying. We too put for^h that extra effort

Under the direction of Tom Hollman,
the Scots have not only excelled on the
field but in the classroom.
Last year the football team had 28
different student-athletes earn semester
grade point averages over the 3.0 mark,
up one from a year ago. Furthermore, the
Scots also increased the number of play
ers who eclipsed the same standard on a
cumulahve basis.
Among the 'Boro's standouts were
1994 graduates Scott Mikowicz and Dave
Ashton. Mikowicz displayed outstanding
work in the classroom, finishing his aca
demic career with an impressive 3.40
QPA. The height of his studies was exem
plified with his representation of Edin
boro University as an NCAA
post-graduate scholarship nominee. Also
the starting tight end on the football
team, Mikowicz caught 25 passes for 365
yards and four touchdowns. Ashton
earned honors as a national scholar-ath
lete and as a three-time Edinboro Univer
sity scholar-athlete, maintaining a 3.22
QPA during his four years at the 'Boro.
He was a starting wide receiver in 1993,
catching 26 passes for 334 yards and three
touchdowns.
Several 1993 graduates earned lau
rels on and off the field during their
careers at Edinboro. Sean Seibert and
Brian Heebsh were both recognized as
national scholar-athletes by College Foot
ball Preview magazine a year ago, while
All-Americans Georj Lewis and Mike
Barnes were nominated for NCAA
minority post-graduate scholarships.

O

Before the arrival of Tom Hollman in
1988, the Fighting Scots knew that their
football program needed a lift. What they
didn't know was that under Hollman's
direction, their lift would quickly become
a significant elevation.
Edinboro has taken its program to
national prominence, and in 1994 will
aim to reach the NCAA II playoffs for the
fifth time in the past six seasons. Last
year, the Scots earned their second
straight post-season appearance while
posting another eight-win (8-3) season.
With all three hard fought losses coming
at the hands of nationally-ranked oppo
nents, the Boro was strong enough to fin
ish the year ranked #14 among the
Division II elite.
This upcoming season should be a
good measure of just how successful the
Edinboro tradition has become. Gradua
tion took 11 starters, many of whom
spent multiple seasons at the top of the
depth chart. And while the good fortune
has been enjoyed, it has not gone unno
ticed. The Scots will have to carry on the
tradition without both former offensive
line coach Ed Stults, who assumed the
head coaching duties at Defiance College
(OH), and former defensive line
coach/recruiting coordinator Gene Smith,
who now works as an NFL BLESTO
scout.
The quest for a third straight post
season berth in 1994 will not be easy with
another rugged 10-game schedule. The
PSAC West slate is more balanced than
ever, while, furthermore, the Scots face
formidable non-conference foes in Hills
dale (MI), Elizabeth City and American
International, and Mansfield.
The Plaid will host five games and
play five on the road in 1994, including
the visitors role in two straight contests to
begin the year. In a strange twist of for
tunes, the Boro has been a terror away
from home the past two years. Since the
start of the 1992 campaign, Edinboro has
gone 10 straight regular season road
games without a loss while posting seven
wins and three setbacks at Sox Harrison
Stadium.

campaign in which he set single season
standards for yards (2,209), touchdowns
(25), and attempts (277). The Scots have
compiled an impressive 23-9-1 record
during his string of 33 consecutive starts.
Larry Jackson, one of the best tail
backs in Edinboro history, also returns for
his senior season. The 1992 PSAC West
Player of the Year returned from early
season injuries to amass 1,171 yards and
eight touchdowns in 1993. Jackson's 2,577
career rushing yards puts him within 823
yards of the Boro's all-time mark. Full
back Chris Snyder, both a tough runner
and punishing blocker, will solidify the
Plaid backfield.
When the Scots go to the air, they'll
look in the direction of wide out Lateef
Walters (23 receptions, 550 yds., 6 TDs)
who gives them plenty of big-play experi
ence.
Offensive Line
The Boro is strong up the middle,
with returning guards Det Betti and Jere
my O'Day. Betti may be asked to play
center to make room for either Chadd
Wallick or Otha Davidson, both of whom
have started in big games during their
careers. On the outside, they must some
how replace former All-PSAC tackles
Mike Kegarise and Tony Tighe. Todd
Henne caught four touchdowns last sea
son and could get the nod at tight end.
Defensive Line
With only one returnee from last
year's squad, the defensive front could be
a big question mark. All-Northeast
Region defensive end Pat Schuster looks
to duplicate a spectacular 1993 campaign
in which he had 76 stops and 11 sacks.
Playing opposite Schuster could be con
verted linebacker and special teams
standout Bryan Lambert (59 tackles).
The main concern is plugging up the
middle with the departure of All-Ameri
can tackle Russell Cray and linemate Rob
Harmer. Matt Gentile played well last
year when injuries put him into a starting
role. The other tackle spot will be up for
grabs when the fall practice sessions get
underway.

Skill Positions
Linebackers
Quarterback Jody Dickerson will
head the offense for the fourth straight
season. On pace to break several Edin
boro career passing records, the PSAC
West first-teamer, and honorable mention
All-American, returns after a stellar 1993

Michael Edwards will spearhead a
linebacking crew who all return as former
starters. The two year backer recorded
127 tackles and six break-ups en route to
a PSAC West Second Team selection a
11

year ago. Another great season from
Edwards could vault him into the Boro's
top ten in career tackles. Michael Sims, a
1993 redshirt, will be asked to fill the big
shoes of three-time All-American middle
linebacker Jason Perkins. Sims had an
impressive freshman season two years
ago in which he had 84 stops at one of the
outside positions. Rahshahn Alston will
be expected to round out an excellent core
of linebackers in 1994. Only a freshman
last year, Alston gained experience as a
starter, totaling 69 tackles from the out
side.
Secondary
The Boro returns three-fourths of a
defensive backfield that terrorized quar
terbacks for 22 interceptions last season.
All-American safety Steve Russell will
lead the talented unit. One of the best ath
letes on the team, Russell is a school
record holder with 14 interceptions. Last
season the All-American and PSAC West
first teamer stole seven aerials and regis
tered 68 tackles. Also feared for his hit
ting ability, Russell has forced six fumbles
over his stellar career.
Marty Williams and Rick Walker also
return after starting all eleven games last
season. Walker accounted for 46 tackles,
five break-ups, and one interception from
his free safety position while Williams, a
comerback, recorded 61 tackles, 10 break
ups, two interceptions and a blocked
pimt. Both returnees caused two fumbles
and recovered another in 1993. Corners
David Harris and Ron Allen both saw
action throughout the past season and are
expected to compete for more playing
time this year.
Specialties
Place-kicker Scott Rupert, a Boro
mainstay the past two years, returns to
handle the kicking chores for yet another
season. In 1993 Rupert set an Edinboro
single season record by connecting on 43
of 45 PAT tries. Five of his 11 field goal
attempts were also true, including a
career best 44 yarder.
The Boro will have a new punter in
1994 for the first time in four years due to
the graduation of All-American Gary
Lhotsky. The vacancy remains up for
grabs as camp starts in August.
Walters is likely to be the Scots' top
punt return threat while Russell averaged
over 24 yards per kickoff return last sea
son, including a 92-yarder for a score at
Slippery Rock.

Go Team! Best of luck for
a great season I

In January 1988, Edinboro Uni

Ohio, as its eleventh head football
coach in the school's history. Hollman
came to Edinboro from Ohio Univer
sity, where he was the defensive coor
dinator.
Hollman, beginning his seventh
year, has the Scot program back in
the national spotlight. At Edinboro,
he has earned 45 wins against just 19
losses and two ties and owns an
impressive 27-7-2 slate against the
PSAC Western Division. The Scots
have advanced to post-season play
four of the past five years.

Tom Hollman

In 1989, he was named the top
coach in the East Region by the
National Football Coaches Associa
tion and also tabbed the top coach in
the PSAC West. In 1990, he guided
the Scots to their first-ever NCAA II
playoff win as Edinboro routed Vir
ginia Union and advanced to the
national quarterfinals.
"Edinboro has been a great expe
rience, and I like the direction of the
program," Hollman said.
"As a coach, I have been fortu
nate to coach at many different levels,
from high school to Division I. The
Division II level here at Edinboro is
very appealing to me in relation to
my career goals. It is a great feeling to
be a head coach at this level."
Hollman's educational back
ground begins with a high school
diploma from Memorial High School
in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his
undergraduate degree in education
from Ohio Northern University in
1968. Three years later Hollman
received his master of science degree
in education from Xavier University
in Cincinnati, Ohio.

sive end during his junior and senior
years. He holds the school record
with 13 career interceptions and
earned All-American and All-District
honors during the 1966 and 1967 sea
sons. Hollman also lettered in base
ball for three years during his stay at
Ohio Northern.
A chronological look at Holl
man's coaching career begins in 1968
as an assistant coach at Sidney High
School in Sidney, Ohio. From there,
Hollman moved on to Greenville
High School in Ohio where he
became head coach from 1971-73. His
Greenville squads posted art impres
sive 26-2-2 mark during his threeyear stay.
/
Hollman then moved on to Fre
mont Ross High School as head coach
for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where
his squad recorded 15 wins against
three setbacks and two ties. Fremont
was the Buckeye Conference champ
in 1974, unbeaten at 9-0-1.
In 1976, Hollman moved on to
the collegiate ranks where he was the
defensive coordinator for his alma
mater at Ohio Northern University.
The following year, Hollman
accepted the head coach position at
Wooster College (OH) and guided his
squad to‘the best four-year record in
the school history (24-11-1).
In 1981, Hollman took an assis
tant coaching spot with Ball State
University which he held through the
1984 campaign. Then, beginning in
1985 Hollman held the defensive
coordinator position at Ohio Univer
sity.
Tom resides in Edinboro with his
wife, Kandi, and four children, Mari,
Jon, Tim and Denise.

While at Ohio Northern, Holl
man was a three-year starter for the
football team and a two-year per
former as a defensive back and offen

The Hollman Era Continues 1988-1994

1994 Returning All-Americans

"I like the shape of our program. Our goal was to
establish a winning program and have fun in the pro
cess. I feel we have done that. We continue to improve
on the field and in the classroom - we want to contin
ue to bring a special type of student-athlete to Edinboro University. It is time to take the next step and
take our program to the elite level among Division II
schools. Each year, we feel that we can play with any
team in the coimtry."

Moving to the offensive side of the
ball, from the defensive backfield, Scott
brings a wealth of coaching experience in
his ninth year at the 'Boro. Under his
guidance the Scot defense has intercepted
78 passes the past six seasons. He has
guided the fortunes of All-Americans
Steve Russell, Michael Willis, Wade
Smith, Georj Lewis, and Mike Barnes, and
PSAC Rookie of the Year Mario Houston.
Offensively, he coached former greats
Elbert Cole, Floyd Faulkner and Ross
Rankin.
Scott came to Edinboro from Ohio
State University, where he coached
receivers and running backs. Prior to his
start at OSU, Browning coached at Wor
thington and Dayton-Fairview high
schools in Ohio, from 1979-81. Then, as a

Offensive Line
graduate assistant, he coached the defen
sive secondary at New Mexico State in
1982.
In 1983, he mentored the receivers at
Idaho State University which advanced to
the Division I-AA playoffs.
Browning earned a master's degree
in education administration from New
Mexico State in 1983, and a BS in educa
tion from Ohio State in 1981. Earlier,
before transferring to OSU, Scott attended
Capital University where he played foot
ball for one season. Browning was a fouryear letterman in four sports at
Loudonville High School (OH) prior to
his collegiate days. Scott is married to the
former Lynn Hook, and has a son,
Andrew Scott. The Brownings reside in
Edinboro.

Dan Gierlak - Running Backs
Dan Gierlak enters his eighth season
as a full-time coach with his responsibili
ties concerning the running backs. He
was formerly the head women's softball
coach for the Scots and led the squad to
the PSAC playoffs in 1990.
Gierlak came to the 'Boro from Thiel
College (Pa.) where he coached the defen
sive secondary for the 1984 season. Dan, a
starter and three-year letterwinner for the
Plaid in the secondary, moved on to the
semi-pro ranks with the Chicago Cow
boys. During his short stint with the
Cowboys, Gierlak's squad gained nation
al championship honors in 1984 and nm-

ner up nationally in the 1985 season. Gier
lak brings both playing and coaching
experience to the staff, giving the Scot
players an added plus on the offensive
side of the ball. As backfield coach, he has
guided former Harlon Hill finalist Elbert
Cole and Boro All-Americans Lester Frye
and Larry Jackson.
Originally from Buffalo, New York,
Dan graduated from Edinboro with a
degree in health and physical education.
He and his wife, the former Amy Adams,
three-year-old daughter, Alexandria Ali
cia, and 9-month-old son, Daniel "Joey"
Jr., reside in Edinboro.

Tony Elliott - Secondary
Tony Elliott, a defensive back with
the Green Bay Packers from 1986-88,
begins his first season coaching the Fight
ing Scot secondary. His professional play
ing experience should be beneficial to an
already strong Edinboro secondary.
"Tony has a fine football mind, and has
been successful as a player and coach. He
comes strongly recommended from oth
ers in the profession and will be an excel
lent role model for our players," head
coach Tom Hollman said.
Elliott comes to Edinboro from
Wayne State (Michigan), where he served
as the defensive coordinator and sec
ondary coach last year. He started at WSU

in 1992 as defensive coordinator and
linebacker coach. He began his coaching
career at Alma College in 1990-91, before
coaching at Grand Valley University in
1991-92. His main duties at those two
schools were recruiting and teaching on
the defensive side of the ball.
Elliott is a graduate of Central Michi
gan University where he majored in
sports studies with a minor concentration
in interpersonal communications. He was
a four-year letterman for the Chippewas
of CMU. Originally from Detroit, Elliott
played at Finney High School from 197982 where he was an All-State performer.

seventh year with the Plaid as defensive
coordinator and linebacker coach. Former
understudy of head coach Tom Hollman
at Greenville High School, Mark brings
extensive experience both on and off the
field to the Scot coaching staff. He has
helped mold the Scot defense into one of
the most respected squads in the country
on the Division II level.
His coaching stint began back while
attending Findlay when he was the head
scout for Arlington High School. His first
job after college was as deferrsive coordi

tight ends and offensive linemen.
From 1981-84, Niswonger was the

from 85-87 as their secondary coach.

You see, Russell could have walked
away from college football here at Edinboro. After a tremendous 1993 season
when his team leading seven intercep
tions elevated his total to an Edinboro
career best of 14, Russell fulfilled his
degree requirements for a bachelor of sci
ence in criminal justice. However, the
Scots' starting strong safety did have
another season of eligibility left, and after
carefully weighing his decision, Russell
decided that he could not walk away
from football just yet.
"I had to think about many things
before I decided to come back," said the
Pittsburgh native. "But if I decided not to
play, then I would have been thinking
about what could have been had I
played."
After enrolling in Edinboro's gradu
ate program, one thing Russell did not
consider on his way back to his final sea
son, was the possibility that he might get
hurt. And on that one fateful day in pre
season camp, Russell sustained what
Boro head trainer George Roberts diag
nosed as a "very severe ankle sprain." So
severe in fact, that initially he thought
that it may have been broken, and
Roberts feels that even after playing in
five games this season, Russell has yet to
fully recover from the disaster. He says,
"At this point, Steve probably isn't fully
recovered. He's probably playing at about
85 to 90 percent, which is a testament to
how tough of a kid he is, and how dedi
cated he is to what he does."
But when September 19 rolled
around, and Steve Russell was by himself
on the practice field running sprints, hit
ting the sled and letting out an occasional
scream to show how frustrated he had
become, there was no doubt that not even
33

an ankle injury keeping him less than 100
percent was going to keep him away
from his senior season.
And if you don't believe that one
player can make a difference, pay atten
tion to these stats: Russell has picked off a
pass in four of the five games which he
has played this season. Including a play
off loss to New Haven last year, Russell
has forced a turnover in 10 of the last 12
games in which he has played. In the
three games in which Russell did not play
this season, the opposing team's passing
efficiency rated at 124.6. In the five games
in which Russell has participated, that
same rating stands at 90.9. Before Russell
joined the team this season, the defense
was allowing 209.3 yards per game pass
ing. In the five games after Russell came
aboard, the Scots have allowed 137.6 per
outing.
Russell's coaches will tell you his
greatest attribute is that he is a team ori
ented player. However, he brings many
attributes to the team as an individual as
well. Among them are his senior leader
ship and a big play mentality.
"The biggest things that I learned
from the seniors who I played with in the
past were to play hard and to never give
up," said the third year starter. "When I
was ready to roll over and die, those
players would pick me up, and I would
follow them. I feel that is my role now, to
do the same tilings that they did for me."
As far as making the big plays is con
cerned, Russell, who now totals 18 inter
ceptions and six forced fumbles
throughout his career, is an expert. "I con
sider myself a big play guy," said Russell.
"When everybody on the team and every
body in the stands looks for a big play to
happen on defense, I feel that they are
looking at me. I feel I have to be held
accountable for what happens on the field
because between (linebacker) Mike
Edwards and myself, we are the only two
seniors out there on the defense. Because
I am a senior, I want to lead by example
and take the initiative to make something
happen."
After looking at four great seasons
filled with hard work, determination and
a desire to win that was unparalleled by
anyone, the Boro fans will tell you, Steve,
you already did.

Assistant Coaches

Nicklaus Cronk - Defensive Line
Cronk joins Edinboro University's
staff as the former position coach for tight
ends at Indiana University. He spent two
seasons with the Hoosiers, both of them
as a graduate assistant to head coach Bill
Mallory. His first season in Bloomington,
Cronk spent time assisting the defensive
coordinator with the linebackers, and he
also helped in the recruiting duties. While
at lU, he graduated with a master's
degree in physical education administra
tion. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana,

SPORT THE BEST!

Cronk was an assistant coach at Carroll
Consolidated High School, handling the
special teams and defensive end responsi
bilities.
Cronk spent his playing days at
Wabash College, where he was an honor
able mention performer in the Indiana
College Athletic Conference, and
captained the 1991 league championship
squad. He graduated from Wabash with a
bachelor of arts degree in political sci
ence.

Scott Mikowicz - Student Coach
Mikowicz is a welcome addition to
the Fighting Scots staff, signing on as a
student assistant. This season he will aid
in the mentoring of the tight ends and
special teams. Assuming his first coach
ing duties, Mikowicz joins the Boro crew
after playing tight end for the Scots the
past two seasons. The former U.S. Naval

Academy student saw a great deal of
action for the Boro in 1993,/hatching 25
passes for 365 yards and four touch
downs. Also an excellent student, Mikow
icz carries a 3.4 QPA as a health and
physical education major. In 1994, he was
chosen by the University as an NCAA
post-graduate scholarship nominee.

The State System of Higher Education
The state universities spent the
first 100 years of existence train
ing teachers for Pennsylvania's
schools. The Normal School Act
of 1857 established regional
teacher training institutions
throughout the Commonwealth.
The School Code of 1911 called
for the state purchase of all nor
mal schools, and by 1921 the pre
sent configuration of 14
state-owned universities was
established. The 14 normal
schools evolved from state nor
mal schools, to state teachers col
leges, to state colleges. On
November 12, 1982, Act 188 was
signed into law establishing on
July 1, 1993 the Pennsylvania
State System of Higher Educa
tion. Thus, the 13 former state
colleges joined with Indiana Uni
versity of Pennsylvania to
achieve university status. The
universities have a cumulative
history of 1,600 years.
There are 14 universities in the
State System of Higher Education
with four branch campuses and
the McKeever Environmental
Center.
The total student population
among the System universities is
95,000. While 89% of students are
from Pennsylvania, they repre
sent many other states and for
eign countries.
The total university campus has
over 4,000 acres in 19 Pennsylva
nia counties. Buildings for class
rooms,
residences,
administration and student sup
port number 719.
Collectively the 14 universities
offer 217 imdergraduate and 107
graduate degree programs, led
by 5,500 full-time faculty mem
bers.
