THE COLLEGE'S HISTORY

PRESIDENT
Dr. ChesterT. McNerney
became president of Edin
boro State College in Sep
tember, 1966. His formal
inauguration, honoring him
as Edinboro's thirteenth
president, followed on April
22, 1967.

The beginnings of the college were laid in 1857,
over one hundred years ago, when a band of ScotchIrish farmers grouped together and founded a private
normal school at Edinboro by popular subscription to
train teachers. In 1861 it was chartered by the Com
monwealth as Pennsylvania's second Normal School
and developed and grew through service to the
Commonwealth.
A great forward stride was taken in 1914, when the
Commonwealth purchased Edinboro Normal School.
In 1926, alerted to the need for better educated teachers
for its schools, Pennsylvania made Edinboro a Teachers
College offering a four-year curriculum leading to de
grees of Bachelor of Science in Secondary, Elementary,
and Art Education, and Library Science.

Dr. McNerney came to
Edinboro from the Univer
sity of Akron, where he was
Dean of the College of Edu
cation and was highly in
strumental in the develop
ment of numerous educaDr. Chester T. McNerney
cational innovations. He
was cited as the motivating force behind the University
of Akron Classrooms Around the World, and recognized
for his scholarly studies of comparative education
abroad.

In 1960 the name of the college was changed to
Edinboro State College.
Beginning in September of 1957, the college was
empowered to grant degrees of Master of Education
in Elementary Education. In September 1961, graduate
study in secondary education was added to the
graduate program.
In 1962 the liberal arts degree program was begun.
Students may prepare for various vocations as an arts
and science major in the Humanities, Social Sciences
or Natural Sciences and may receive a Bachelor of
Arts degree.
The control of the College is vested in the Board
of Trustees, composed of nine members appointed by
the Governor of Pennsylvania. The Board of Trustees
in turn elects the President of the College who is re
sponsible for its administration. The State Superin
tendent of Public Instruction is an ex-officio member
of the Board of Trustees.
The College is accredited by the National Council
for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Middle
States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools,
and the American Medical Association. In addition, its
curriculums are registered by the New York State
Department of Education.
The College stresses friendly relations among
students and faculty and informal student counseling
and guidance. The faculty is keenly aware of profes
sional interests and self growth. High qualitative and
quantitative standards distinguish the graduates of this
college. The preparation of better educated citizens
has been an Edinboro tradition for over a century.

Dr. McNerney's primary areas of interest deal with
the improvement of the curriculum, the program for
educational supervision and administration, and the
improvement of inter-personal relationships among the
various members of working groups. His concern in
this area has led to his writing of several books,
lecturing and conducting various workshops.

EDINBORO STATE COLLEGE'S
ATHLETIC PROGRAM
Intercollegiate athletics play an important role in
the total educational program of Edinboro State Col
lege. The program is so conducted as to assure whole
some use of leisure time, a healthy focal point for the
experience and the expression of group spirit, and a
laboratory experience for prospective coaches.
Edinboro's athletic program includes intercollegiate
competition in football, basketball, wrestling, golf,
track, tennis, baseball, soccer and cross country. The
finest of facilities are readily being made available to
accommodate these sports.

The most recent addition to Edinboro's athletic plant
is Sox Harrison Stadium and Athletic Field. The stadium

along with complete track facilities. Currently a baseball
diamond of major league specifications is being con
structed near the stadium. The field will cover six acres
with a selected clay base infield and specially seeded
playing area.
Scheduled for construction in the near future is a
new fieldhouse. The structure will include an inter
collegiate basketball court, three intramural basketball
courts, an AAU-sized swimming pool, wrestling and
handball rooms, a steam room, a corrective gym, medi
cal suite, and rifle range. Seating capacity of the sports
arena will be approximately 4,500 with provisions for
later expansion to 7,000 provided.
The continuing growth of Edinboro's athletic pro
gram is rapidly establishing the College as a respected
collegiate competitor.

cently appointed to the
newly created post of full

1968 PRE-SEASON OUTLOOK
"Cautious Optimism”

Just how well the 1968 edition of Highlander grid
hopefuls will perform is a big question mark. For the
first time in the past two years the Scots will have ex
perienced personnel in key positions both offensively
and defensively. What remains to be seen is how well
this team will jell as a working unit.
The offensive backs are quick and strong. The triple
threat in the backfield consists of 5'9”, 195-pound
senior halfback John Mikovich, 5'10”, 200-pound
junior halfback "Smokey" Santillo, and 5'11", 205pound junior full back John Guerrasio. All three are
varsity lettermen. Mikovich has been the Scots' top
ground gainer for three years while Santillo adds both
power and speed. Guerrasio can be depended upon in
short yardage situations.
The quarterbacking chores are up for grabs among a
pair of juniors, 5'11", 180-pound Tom Mackey and
5'11", 170-pound Chico Rollick, and a pair of sophs,
5'11", 170-pound Barry Masterson and 5'11", 168pound Gary Roth. Rollick handled the helm last season
for the Scots while Roth starred as the freshman pilot.
Mackey has been out with an injured knee for a year,
but is rated as a top quarterback. Masterson looked
sharp in spring drills.
A crop of tested defensive linemen will make the
Highlanders strong up the middle and the secondary
will also receive a much needed shot in the arm with the
addition of battle-tested personnel.
Top veteran linemen include 6'3", 233-pound
offensive tackle, John Ballard and 6'2", 230-pound de
fensive tackle, Dave Brandell along with 5'11", 210pound defensive end, Al Barbati, and 6'1", 216-pound
tight end, Dan Bissontz.
Battle-tested returnees in the secondary are 6'0",
218-pound junior linebacker Jim Jaruszewicz and 5'9",
160-pound safety, Joe Bufalino. A crop of excellent
sophomores are expected to play a key role here along
with the other veteran performers.
On the plus side of the offense is Dan Bissontz, a
6'1", 216-pound first team RSCAC tackle last year, who
has been switched to tight-end. Bissontz was quite
impressive at his new "home" in the spring game.
Another pleasing demonstration in the spring contest
was the accurate "toe" of Tom Rockwell, a 5'11", 200pound sophomore place kicker, who clicked on 6 of 7
extra point attempts.
Indeed, the Fighting Scots grid fans can look for
ward to the '68 campaign with "cautious optimism."

1968 Outlook:

1968 Outlook:

The Big Warriors have over 30 returning lettermen
back from a powerful squad that posted a 7-1 record
last year. Leading the Tribe offensively are 6'1", 175pound quarterback Bill Dukett. Second Team AllConference fullback, 5'8”, 170-pound John Pitzer, the
Warriors' leading ground gainer in '67, and 6'2", 200pound offensive end Ed Csencsits. Csencsits broke the
East Stroudsburg single pass reception mark with 38
catches for 620 yards and 4 touchdowns. Also returning
at the inside linebacker slot to bolster the defensive unit
is First Team PSCAC selection 5'11", 208-pound Gary
Schoenberger. ESSC's defensive secondary allowed
only 3 touchdowns last season and the top performers
from that backfield are returning.

The Polar Bears lost 14 lettermen, yet are returning
14 veteran letter winners. Northern will be younger this
year but will have more speed and more size than last
season. Top prospects include 5'11", 190-pound half
back Damon Infaivi, 6'0", 200-pound end Dave
Walker, 5'10", 207-pound tackle Frank Garofalo, and
217-pound senior guard. Jack Ohie.
Injuries to top players led to a 3-6 season last year,
but the Bears still played good defensive ball.
This will be the first meeting of the two colleges in
their football histories.

The Scots jumped off to a 6-0 lead against the
Warriors last year on John Mikovich's 90-yard return
of the opening kickoff, but the Tribe bounced back to
scalp the Highlanders 33-6.

1968 Outlook:

The "Green Men” have a fine nucleus of 28 lettermen to blast off their 1968 campaign. However, the
Rockets face a strong schedule opening up with
powerhouses Westminster and Waynesburg.
Among the top offensive candidates for the quarterbacking chores are 6'4", 185-pound John Ross and
6'0", 178-pound Steve Konick. Konick gained over 500
yards in the Rocket backfield last year as a tailback.
Another key prospect is 6'0", 205-pound Jay Wagner,
converted from end to tailback. He is a bull-like runner
and gives Slippery Rock something which was missing
all last season, the big back who can pick up short
yardage in key situtations.
A successful season hinges on what type of a co
hesive unit the group of young returnees can form
along with some key sophs.

1968 Outlook:

With just six regulars—three from the offense and
three from the defense—missing from last season's Big
Indian varsity football team, hopes at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania and for head coach Chuck Klausing for
grid success can't help but be optimistic. The squad has
a sound nucleus of 24 lettermen returning from a team
which won eight while losing only one and can also
boast of several promising newcomers.
Both of last season's first team offensive ends have
graduated, but their places will be taken by converted
wingback, 5'7", 175-pound senior Dick Draganac at
wide end, and converted fullback, 6'0”, 210-pound
junior Joe Kovalchick at tight end.
The starting backfield has two new faces, 6'1 ”, 200pound junior Dave Smith, a transfer from Waynesburg
College, at wingback and 5'10”, 186-pound junior Tom
McCracken at fullback. They will join returning quarter
back 6'0”, 185-pound junior Wally Blucas and tailback
5'10”, 185-pound junior Dan Cox, last year's leading
ground gainer.

1968 Outlook:

The Golden Eagles romped to the Western Division
crown last year on the passing arm of Jim Alcorn who
is now with the Cleveland Browns and then lost in the
title game to West Chester. Clarion should prove tough
again with 24 returning lettermen. The offense will face
some problems this year, but the nucleus of a strong
defensive unit will return. Defensive standouts include
6'0", 215-pound senior tackle. Bob Gevaudan, 6'1",
220-pound senior tackle, Jim Jones and 6'0", 175pound linebacker. Art Tragesser. Top returnee on
offense is 6'0”, 165-pound senior wingback Jim
Becker.
-28-

Coach Al Jacks has compiled an impressive 32-11 -2
record the past 5 years at Clarion and the Eagles will
fight hard to keep him on the winning side.

1968 Outlook:

The Bald Eagles will lack depth in linemen, but the
backfield should have depth and the quarterback situa
tion be much improved. Of course, the shoes of stand-29-

out fullback Jim Blacksmith will be hard to fill. Out
standing veterans are 6'0", 215-pound center, Steve
Jarrett, 6'3”, 225-pound tackle, Tom Arrowsmith and
5'11", 170-pound halfback, Dave Hoffman.
The defensive unit is bolstered by a fine pair of
junior linebackers in 6'0", 190-pound Ron Beshore and
6'0", 195-pound Bill Dreibelbis.
The Bald Eagles have 15 returning lettermen to
help Head Coach Hubert Jack add to his 100 grid
victories.

nation in college division scoring while his 75-yard
jaunt from scrimmage against Clarion and 97-yard
kickoff return against California also ranked him among
the leaders. The first team PSCAC winner gained 695
yards in 153 tries for a 4.5 average. Orndorff, a 6'2",
208-pound halfback, was the second leading rusher
with 412 yards and grabbed 18 passes for 208 yards.
The Red Raiders will be a definite contender for the
title in '68.

1968 Outlook
1968 Outlook

Coach Dave Dolbin will be particularly pleased to
greet his offensive trio of Steve Bumgarner, Ed Hammers
and Lou Orndorff among his 28 returning letter winners.
Bumgarner, a 6'0", 180-pound senior, guided the Red
Raiders' offense last season and clicked on 88 of 176
passes for 1,014 yards. Hammers, a 6'0", 200-pound
fullback was the Big Reds' leading scorer and ground
gainer. His 73 points placed him twenty-fifth in the

The Golden Tornadoes feel they're still a year away
but are quickly moving in the right direction. Joe Banks'
crew of 17 lettermen faces another tough schedule, but
the team should improve. The key personnel are young
and can use more exprience. The Tornadoes have four
fine football players in Greg Haney, a 6'0", 170-pound
junior quarterback, Joe O'Neill, a 5'9", 165-pound
sophomore end, Pete Quinn, a 6'3", 196-pound soph
end, and Mike Hink, a 6'1", 235-pound junior tackle.
