Building A University . .
With the addition of the liberal arts degree program
in 1962, the College's curriculum has expanded to
include numerous course selections. Curricula range
from elementary and secondary education, special
fields in art, library science, music and special education
to medical technology.
The College stresses friendly relations among
students and faculty, as well as active student par
ticipation in decisions affecting them. Quality education
has been an Edinboro tradition for more than a century
as graduates have distinguished themselves in the
professions, business and industry.
With the appointment of Dr. Chester T. McNerney
as Edinboro State's President in 1966, the College
has undergone innovations and reorganization that have
enabled the College to keep in step with the times and
maintain its academic excellence.
Edinboro State College is at the brink of a new era
and has taken the initiative for a new direction among
the state colleges of Pennsylvania. The College plans to
offer programs in such diverse fields as international
education, business administration and engineering to
meet its leadership responsibilities in the years ahead.

Edinboro President - Dr. Chester T. McNerney

From its beginning as a private academy in 1856,
Edinboro State College has surged to the forefront as
one of the leading educational institutions in Western
Pennsylvania. Located just 15 miles south of Erie, Pa.,
the College's setting offers a contrast of seasons.
Enhanced by the beauty of Edinboro Lake, the com
munity serves as a resort center during the summer
while numerous nearby ski slopes offer a variety of
recreation in the picturesque winter months. The
College's location enables it to readily serve the tri
state area with its proximity to Pittsburgh, Pa. (125
miles), Cleveland, Ohio (100 miles) and Buffalo, New
York (120 miles). Moreover, it is easily accessible from
the north and south by Interstate 79 and east and west
by Interstate 90.
Until recently the chief objective of the College
was the education and preparation of classroom
teachers for the schools of the Commonwealth. With
the implementation of programs in arts, sciences and
humanities, Edinboro has now become a multi-purpose
institution of higher learning serving the educational
needs of a tri-state area.
The College has experienced a rapid growth rate in
students, faculty and physical plant. Forty buildings
cover the 585-acre campus which now services more
than 6,000 students.
In its university oriented role, the College makes
contributions in the fields of education, government,
conservation, environmental improvement, urban and
rural problems, crime prevention, and service to business
and industry. Edinboro seeks to offer educational pro
grams which will afford maximum opportunities to its
potential students and to meet the educational needs
of its region from a professional and a cultural stand
point.

Keeping pace with the College's academic progress
has been a building program which has dramatically
changed the physical appearance of the campus over
the past decade. Included among the additions are a
nine-acre lake, an athletic complex, dormitory quadrant
and new student services facilities such as a student
union, dining hall and health center. Scheduled for
completion in the near future are a new library and
administration building.

SCOTS’ BIGGEST PROBLEM IS MOVING THE BALL
There are 48 new freshmen on the roster, some of whom
we'll have to depend on to fill key roles.
"It seems that almost every place we have outstanding
strengths, we also have glaring weaknesses. For example,
we have a fine throwing quarterback in Mike Hill, but our
entire receiving corps was wiped out by graduation.
Defensively, we probably have the best set of linebackers in
the league, but we have to depend on a revamped front line
that is still a big question mark.
"We've always been blessed with an outstanding
break-away runningback. This year we have the kind of
people along the offensive line that, if they pull together,
could do an outstanding job, yet don't have game-breaking
speed in our backfield."
While McDonald bemoans the fact that he has a lot of
newcomers who will have to fit into the Fighting Scot mold
rather quickly, there is still a crop of some fine veterans in
front running positions.
Some of the Scots' most solid performers are found on
the defensive side of the ledger where Associated Press
All-American Honorable Mention middle guard Ron
Gooden (6-3, 250) is bolstered by standout linebackers Jim
Krentz (6-2, 225) and Greg Sullivan (6-1,195). Krentz was
the Scots' tackling leader last fall with 113 hits, while
Sullivan finished third and Gooden fourth on the tackling
charts.
Joining the trio up front are tackle Randy Bradshaw(63, 235), along with Willie Curry(6-3,215)andTom Lang(60, 203) who man the terminal spots.
Linebacker Greg Sullivan

Edinboro State College football coach, Bill McDonald,
greeted exactly 96 varsity grid candidates the opening day
of pre-season practice, but the large turnout did not cause
the Fighting Scot mentor to be overly optimistic for the
1977 season.
"That number is deceiving," commented McDonald,
"since we have only six seniors and 24 returning
lettermen. Our camp is really made up of underclassmen.

Returning to set their sites on enemy aerials in the
secondary are Mike Jennings (5-11, 175) and Kevin
Campbell (5-11,165) who will be supported by newcomers
Ken Petardi (6-0, 175) and Dan Fiegl (6-0, 185).
Also on tap to help the defensive unit are tackle Tom
Greenstone (6-2, 230), end Bruno Capogreco (6-3, 205)
and defensive back Rayfield Adams (6-0, 187).
A pair of record breakers are missing from the Scots'
offensive corps, but junior quarterback Mike Hill has

already proved that he can helpfill the gaps. Hill reported to
the ESC backfield on the second play of last year's final
game and promptly broke three Edinboro State passing
records. Hill established a new TD passing mark with three
aerial scores in that game, while finishing the year with
nine touchdown passes, another new standard. He
finished the contest with 275 yards in the air which
bettered the previous record of 250 set by Jude Basile in
1974.

OT

Ready to make holes along the offensive line are
veteran tackles Lee Barthelmes (6-5,230) and Greg Hampy
(6-3, 240), along with guards Dave Gallagher (5-10, 195)
and Bob Kunkle (6-0, 219). Transfer Dave Jaworski (6-1,
222) has gotten the nod at center, while tackle Jim Wuliger
(6-2, 245) and Fred Knoof (6-3, 225) are also expected to
see much action.

The biggest problem facing the Scots' braintrusts is the
replacement of the best pass catching aces in ESC history.
Gone from the ranks is a crop of receivers who caught a
record-breaking 110 passes for 1,653 yards. Among the
group was speedy Howard Hackley who led the assault on
the record book by revising eight pass receiving standards.
The talented receiver notched new marks for most yards in
a game (190), season (972) and career (2,467), as well as
most receptions in a game (9), a season (47), a career(135)
and most touchdown catches in a season (9) and career
(18). Hackley also finished as the team's leading scorer
with his 54 points via nine scoring catches.

DE

Alternating at tight end are juniors Pat McKenrick(6-5,
225) and Bill Kruse (6-3, 215) with Bob Jahn (6-0, 178)
stationed at the wide receiver slot and Mike Arcarisi (6-1,
205) listed as the starting flanker. Look for freshman Joe
D'Amico (5-10, 180) to push for a regular job as the season
progresses.
Other record breakers on hand are punters Dan Fiegl
(6-0, 185) and John Serrao (5-10V2, 185) who, likewise,
etched their names in the Edinboro State record charts.
Fiegl posted the best punting average ever with his 39.4
yards per boot in 57 attempts. Serrao got into the standard
revising act by successfully booting field goals six times for
a new season high.
Overall, the 1977 Fighting Scots appear to be solid
defensively, but observers in most camps feel the offensive
unit will have a tough time tatooing the scoreboard at the
same pace past Edinboro State teams have been setting.

VETERAN COACHES OFFER VALUABLE EXPERIENCE

While he directed Indiana University's offense, the Big
Indians registered 24 regular season victories against only
three defeats. In his final season at Indiana, the Tribe
finished unbeaten in nine outings and proved to be the
greatest offensive unit in the school's history with a 40
points-per-game average.
The Wall, Pa., native guided Hopewell High School to a
46-25-1 slate during his seven-year tenure as head coach.
His 1960 ball club defeated Braddock High 7-6 and broke
their WPIAL 58-game winning streak while his 1963 team
captured the Midwest Class A Championship.
The Fighting Scots' grid pilot served as an assistant
coach at Braddock High School through two undefeated
seasons and also at Latrobe High.
McDonald holds both a B.S. degree in education and a
M.Ed. from the Univ. of Cincinnati where he pfayed
linebacker under Sid Gillman and his assistant coacfi Paul
Dietzel. This team was the original "Chinese Bapdits," a
defensive unit which later became famous at Louisiana
State University.
After graduation from Cincinnati in 1952, the Scots'
mentor continued his education in post graduate work at
Penn State, Pitt and Indiana (Pa.) Universities. Bill and his
wife, Joanne, along with their three children - Amy, Jody
and Dave - reside in Edinboro.

1977 ESC FOOTBALL STAFF (L-R): Head Coach Bill McDonald, Denny Creehan, Tom Herman,
Barney Rutkowski, Jeff Idzik, Jim Bowen, Ken Walker, Harry Morrison and George Gast.

Head Coach - Bill McDonald

Bill McDonald carries an impressive 48-24-5 record
into the 1977 season after eight years of leading the
Fighting Scots' gridiron program. Under his direction, ESC
gridders posted identical 9-1 slates in both 1970 and 1971
while piling up a winning streak of 21 straight regular
season games. His 48-24-5 mark puts him at the top of the
winning percentage list among Edinboro State football
coaches with a 67 per cent reading.'
After an initial 4-4-1 season in 1969, his Fighting
Scots became the greatest in ESC history when they went
8-0 in regular season play, captured the Lambert Bowl,
won the Pennsylvania Conference championship and
earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His 1971 team
followed up with an undefeated regular season (9-0) and a
second straight PC Western Division title. Over 60
individual and team records have been established during
his first seven years at the reigns.

BARNEY RUTKOWSKI — Offensive Backs

Jim Bowen begins his 11th year with the Edinboro
State football program on the defensive side of the ledger.
The veteran mentor has primarily worked with the Scots'
offensive attack, but for the second year the experienced
coach will help fill a gap by directing the linebackers.
Bowen served as backfield coach tutoring such greats as
Joe Sanford, Jim Romaniszyn, Bob Mengerink and Al
Raines. Jim was head football coach at Fairview High
School for 10 years and compiled an outstanding record of
76 winsand 12 losses. Hisgridteamscapturedfourleague
championships while riding 25 and 19 game winning
streaks. The knowledgeable Scot coach graduated from
Slippery Rock State in 1957 and earned his master's
degree from Buffalo University. Jim and his wife, Joyce,
along with their 7 children, two of which are twin girls,
reside in Girard.

Barney Rutkowski begins his third year on the Fighting
Scot staff coaching offensive backs and coordinating the
junior varsity offense. Barney came to Edinboro after
spending six seasons as head football coach at St. John
Kanty Prep and had also served one year as assistant coach
at Wesleyville High School. He is a graduate of Wesleyville
High where he earned all-county honors performing at
both quarterback and linebacker. Following two years of
active service in the Navy, Barney attended Findlay College,
Findlay, Ohio, where he was a member of both the football
and wrestling squads. He then moved to Kanty Prep in a
teaching position for nine years, six of which involved head
coach in football and nine consecutive season as head
basketball coach. Presently, he is working toward his
certification in health and physical education at Edinboro.
Barney and his wife, Carol, reside in Erie along with their
four children, Russell 16, Raymond 15, Beth Ann 13, and
Mary Carol 11.

TOM HERMAN — Offensive Coordinator

Upon completion of 1970's successful venture,
numerous post-season laurels were bestowed upon the
Scot's mentor. The Football Writers Association of New
York named McDonald Coach of the Year in the East while
the NAIA Area VIII and District 18 coaches as well as the
Pennsylvania Collegiate Press Association also rewarded
him with Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to his assignment at Edinboro, McDonald served
as assistant football coach at Indiana Univ. of Pa. for three
years and head coach at Hopewell High School from 19581965.

JIM BOWEN — Linebackers

EDINBORO STATE 1977 TRI-CAPTAINS (L-R): Mike Jennings,
Greg Sullivan, Greg Hampy.

Tom Herman returns to his alma mater for the third
year to coordinate the offensive unit and primarily to tutor
the offensive line. Originally a standout football player at
Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Tom continued his grid
career at Edinboro State for four years where he started as
a centerduring his junior campaign and then wasa regular
defensive end in his senior season. Tom earned his
master's degree in health and physical education at
Marshall University where he served as an assistant
offensive line coach. He spent lastfall sharpening Edinboro
State's defensive linemen.

KEN WALKER — Receivers
Ken Walker comes to the Fighting Scot camp to mold
the Scots' receivers after serving as head football coach at
Union City Area High School for four seasons. During that
span, the Bears captured two league championships and
were most impressive last fall when they lost theirfirst ball
game and won their next eight in a row. Ken was a foursport lettermen at Edinboro's General McLane High School
and then chose to continue his career at Edinboro State
where he played split end and defensive back for the

Giving Fighting Scot athletes the tops in professional
medical care and producing top-notch staffs of student
trainers has been the trademark of trainer Bob Klingler who
begins his tenth season at Edinboro State. The 1952 Lock
Haven grad ventured to Hermann School of Physical
Therapy in Houston, Texas and became a registered
physical therapist in 1954. He later received his M.S. from
Bucknell. Prior to accepting his ESC post, Klinglertaughtat
Milton Hershey, a private boys' school in Hershey, Pa. Bob,
his wife, Jill, and daughter, Julie, make their home in
Washington Township.

Name practically any honor that can be bestowed upon
any athletic team and Edinboro State College's cross
country coach Doug Watts has probably attained it. Under
Watts' tutelage, the Fighting Scots have nailed down backto-back NAIA national championships, while winning 30
straight matches in dual competition.
Watts, himself, has been twice-named NAIA Coach of
the Year and over the past eight seasons has guided his
teams to an amazing 56-8 overall record. While three of
four All-Americans are missing from the roster. Watts feels
he still has the talent on hand to be one of the top
representative teams in the nation.
The Scot mentor has his work cut out for him with only

senior All-American Dalvin Baehler back in the fold, along
with a handful of veterans and some promising new
comers.
Undoubtedly, Baehler will lead the pack, but should be
pushed by sophomore Brian Jordan who established
himself as a top challenger last season in his freshman
debut. Right behind him is All-America hopeful Joe Come
who has been slowed throughout his career with untimely
injuries. Also showing their heels to the competition
should be seniors Dave Hornack and Mark Linder, along
with soph transfer Steve Dunham who was the Delaware
State high school champ two years ago.
The Scots won't have far to go to find top notch
competition with backyard rival Indiana University also in
contention for the national laurel^^his year.

"We're a young team. If we hang together and develop
character, we'll win a lot of games." This was Edinboro
State's Soccer Coach George Shimpeno's assessment in
regard to the Scots' upcoming 1977 soccer campaign.
Shimpeno was referring to the Fighting Scots'
youthfulness this season. Since the squad's defense has
vanished from last year via the diploma route, Shimpeno
will overload his defensive unit with three starting
sophomores and one freshman. "The success of this
season will depend on how well we can build a defense,"
continued the eighth-year ESC soccer mentor.
The senior trio of Roberto Serrano, Amilcar Flores and
Frank Hartmann will head the cast of underclassmen.
Serrano was among the team's leading scorers last
season with five goals and two assists, while Flores
chipped in with one goal and five assists.
Edinboro will be attempting to improve on last year's 6-51 record with a bolstered offense which includes junior Jim
Basilone and freshman Jim Boyles providing the fire
power. Versatile senior Frank Hartmann also adds depth to
the squad.
Holding down the Scot defense will be sophomore Henry
Arch, said to be the "strongest and most aggressive
defender" by Shimpeno. Arch will be used mainly as a
sweeper back.
Pius Takang, a sophomore from Cameron, Africa, will
also see a lot of action this season on defense, as will
freshmen Bucky Cosgray and Jim Boyles.
In the goal this season for Edinboro State will be
returning letterman Gabriel Castillo, a junior who has had
plenty of experience. Complementing Castillo and pro
viding plenty of competition is freshman Leon Green. The
Richlands, North Carolina product is new to the game, but
has been impressive in early drills.
Overall, the Scots will carry eight returning lettermen on
a roster of 25 this season and will be competing in Division I
of the Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Soccer
Conference.

Shimpeno is hoping to at least break even in this fall's
rugged campaign and with a few lucky breaks, the young,
but skillful Scots can find themselves in the thick of things
come November. However, the Scot hooters are lacking
depth and injuries will play a key factor in the squad's
success.
Shimpeno expects Behrend to be the team to beat in the
western division this fall, with Slippery Rockand Indiana as
top challengers.
Since the University of Pittsburgh is Shimpeno's alma
mater, the clash with the Panthers takes on a special
meaning to the ESC coach. With last year's series-evening
2-1 win over Pitt still fresh in their minds, the Scots are
looking forward to facing the "Steel City" team once again.
Helping Shimpeno sharpen the ESC kickers has been
graduate assistant Dan Frost, who has shared his valuable
experience with the Scot goaltenders.

SCOT SPIKERS AMONG BEST IN THE EAST
1977 ROSTER

During the past three seasons, women's volleyball at
Edinboro has truly "arrived," according to head coach Pat
McLane. The quality of play has continually improved, the
schedule has become increasingly difficult and spectator
participation has grown rapidly.
Regular season records of 17-5, 22-2, and 23-2
against impressive competition reflect the improved quality
of play. For three consecutive seasons, Edinboro has been
selected one of the best 16 college and university teams in
10 eastern states. As one of the "top 16," the Lady Scots
competed in regional tournaments at the University of
Delaware, Southern Connecticut State College and at
home last fall when the Scots hosted 15 other teams from
the Eastern region at McComb Fieldhouse.
Last season, Edinboro defeated every Pennsylvania
team it played with double victories against Pitt and
Slippery Rock and single setbacks against Clarion, Indiana,
Temple, East Stroudsburg and Perin State. In the regional
tournament, Edinboro beat the University of Connecticut
and Temple before being eliminated by Cortland and
Georgetown.
Senior spiker Julie Groves is thi? year's captain with
senior setters Anna Sabol and Mary Stickle serving as
alternate captains.
Highlighting the fall 1977 campaign is the addition of
numerous new teams to the schedule. Edinboro will meet
Cleveland State, central region powerhouse Cincinnati and
Kent State University.
Also featured on the schedule is Ohio University, a
team the Lady Scots will face at the Pitt Invitational
Tournament. Opponents closer to the eastern seaboard are
Springfield College (Mass.), Ithaca and Central Con
necticut.
The Lady Scots will be pointing toward a berth, once
again, among the top 16 in the regional tournament which,
this year, will be hosted at Oswego, New York in November.

Edinboro's second annual invitational tournament
includes newcomers Pitt — Johnstown and Cleveland
State, along with traditional powerhouses Buffalo^ State,
Brockport, Clarion and Slippery Rock. The Lady Scots
topped the field of eight entrants last fall when they fought
off a determined Pitt team with closely contested 15-10,
11-15 and 15-12 matches.
Area volleyball fans were treated to some of the finest
competition in the United States with the Scots hosted the
EAIAW regional championships. Coach Pat McLane's
hopefuls dropped tight 15-10 and 15-13 matches to
Cortland State, the team which eventually finished as the
tourney runnerup the Scots' chances were hampered as
they lost standout Paula Parmeter who was forced to the
side lines after injuring her achilles tendon.
The University of Maryland defeated Cortland State,
16-14 and 17-15, as 2,400 onlookers witnessed the
exciting championship contest. Both teams proceeded to
the national finals at the University of Texas.

Prior to the 1926 season, Edinboro was a state
normal school and did not play a complete inter
collegiate schedule. Therefore, any records prior to that
season should not be considered as part of the inter
collegiate football history of Edinboro State College.

.

Edinboro's intercollegiate football history began in
1926 when Edinboro became a four-year degree
granting institution and for the first time played a
complete intercollegiate schedule against other fouryear degree granting institutions.

HOME OF THE FIGHTING SCOTS — SOX HARRISON STADIUM
Serving as home for ESC athletes and fans is Sox
Harrison Stadium. The edifice was dedicated in the fall of
1965 in honor of "Sox" Harrison who served as head
football and basketball coach at the College for 35 years.
His 1931 -32 cage record of 11 wins and 1 loss still stands
as one of the best marks ever posted by an Edinboro
basketball team. Sox still enjoys watching the Fighting
Scots on Saturday afternoons as one of their most ardent
fans.
Complete facilities are located beneath the grandstand
area, which seats 3,000 people. Locker space for both the
home and visiting teams, the coaching staff offices and
locker room, the officials' dressing room, the training room.

showers, the weight room and a laundry room are utilized
within this space. Also included are restrooms, janitors'
facilities, equipment rooms, a large concession stand and
a glass enclosed press box.
In addition to the football field, the stadium also
contains complete track facilities. A quarter-mile oval, a
220 straight-away and asphalt approaches for the field
events highlight the home of the cinder sport.
Bleacher seats on the visitors side of the stadium bring
the total seating capacity to 5,500.
A new scoreboard, one of the largest in the
Conference, was added at the south end of the field last
year.
