Edinboro State College

EDINBOBO STATE COLLEGE
From its beginning as a private academy in 1856,
Edinboro State College has surged to the forefront as
one of the leading educational institutions in Western
Pennsylvania. Located just 15 miles south of Erie, Pa.,
the College's setting offers a contrast of seasons.
Enhanced by the beauty of Edinboro Lake, the com
munity serves as a resort center during the summer
while numerous nearby ski slopes offer a variety of
recreation in the picturesque winter months. The
College's location enables it to readily serve the tri
state area with its proximity to Pittsburgh, Pa. (125
miles), Cleveland, Ohio (100 miles) and Buffalo, New
York (120 miles). Moreover, it is easily accessible from
the north and south by Interstate 79 and east and west
by Interstate 90.
Until recently the chief objective of the College
was the education and preparation of classroom
teachers for the schools of the Commonwealth. With
the implementation of programs in arts, sciences and
humanities, Edinboro has now become a multi-purpose
institution of higher learning serving the educational
needs of a tri-state area.
The College has experienced a rapid growth rate in
students, faculty and physical plant. Forty buildings
cover the 585-acre campus which now services more
than 7,000 students.

Edinboro President - Dr. Chester T. McNerney

In its university oriented role, the College makes
contributions in the fields of education, government,
conservation, environmental improvement, urban and
rural problems, crime prevention, and service to business
and industry. Edinboro seeks to offer educational pro
grams which will afford maximum opportunities to its
potential students and to meet the educational needs
of its region from a professional and a cultural stand
point.

A LEADER IN EDUCATION

With the addition of the liberal arts degree program
in 1962, the College's curriculum has expanded to
include numerous course selections. Curricula range
from elementary and secondary education, special
fields in art, library science, music and special education
to medical technology.
Student activities are designed to develop the
personality, poise, self-confidence and professional
awareness that will fit graduates for significant par
ticipation in American society.
The College stresses friendly relations among
students and faculty, as well as active student par
ticipation in decisions affecting them. Quality education
has been an Edinboro tradition for more than a century
as graduates have distinguished themselves in the
professions, business and industry.
With the appointment of Dr. Chester T. McNerney
as Edinboro State's President in 1966, the College
has undergone innovations and reorganization that have
enabled the College to keep in step with the times and
maintain its academic excellence.
Edinboro State College is at the brink of a new era
and has taken the initiative for a new direction among
the state colleges of Pennsylvania. The College plans to
offer programs in such diverse fields as international
education, business administration and engineering to
meet its leadership responsibilities in the years ahead.
Keeping pace with the College's academic progress
has been a building program which has dramatically
changed the physical appearance of the campus over
the past decade. Included among the additions are a
nine-acre lake, an athletic complex, dormitory quadrant
and new student services facilities such as a student
union, dining hall and health center. Scheduled for
completion in the near future are a new library and
administration building.

Marching Scots Band Nationally Famed

PERFORM AT STEELERS-CHIEFS GAME
The nationally renown Marching Scots Band under
the direction of Richard Lemke and Ronald Byerly will
continue to offer spectacular performances which serve
as top-notch entertainment throughout the season.
Featured in the Marching Scots Band is a con
tingent of 154 strong which includes 130 instru
mentalists, 21 tarn o'shanters and 9 majorettes.
For the third straight year, the Band of Scots will
be performing in Three Rivers Stadium where this year
they provide the pre-game and halftime shows for the
Pittsburgh Steelers-Kansas City Chiefs game. The
Edinboro State band last year was featured on national
television when it provided entertainment fot the
Steelers-Cincinnati Bengalsgame. This year the Scots
band will present "Games People Play" as their show
at Three Rivers.

Karianne Baklarz

In addition to the appearance at the Steeler game,
the Marching Scots band will perform at all of Edinboro's
home and several away football games. Productions for
the 1975 season, in addition to the "Games People
Play," are "Marching Down Broadway," "They Don't
Write Songs Like That Anymore" and "Salute to the
Bicentennial" which will be the homecoming show.
Pittsburgh senior, Karianne Baklarz, serves as the
featured twirler for the Marching Scots and is ac
companied by solo twirlers. Holly Mayer from Novelty,
Ohio and Jeanne Schultz from Pittsburgh.
The combined trio has won numerous twirling
honors and together forms one of the most talented
groups of twirlers in the United States.
Drum major for the Marching Scots Band is
Steve Barber, a junior from Johnstown.

Scots Showcase Most Returnees in History . ..
While Edinboro State's 1975 football squad has
all the ingredients to become a collegiate grid power
house, seventh-year mentor Bill McDonald holds his
breath everytime the Scots don pads for practice
sessions. McDonald's band of Scots found themselves
in a similar position last year, but injuries to key
performers left Edinboro with a very respectable, but
frustrating 5-2-2 season mark.
Once again, the Scots have plenty of reasons to
anxiously embark upon their first-ever 10-game
schedule. This year's team showcases a pair of all-time
highs with the most lettermen in the school's history, a
total of 34, and the largest group of seniors ever, 16.
"If our key players stay healthy and our injured
from last year come back at full strength, we could be
a conference contender," projected McDonald. But the
ESC coach quickly tempered any signs of optimism by
adding, "We're still fighting a depth problem and will be
playing a heckuva lot of good football teams. You just
can't replace experience when it comes to the skill
positions," he continued.
Most of the experience returns to the Scots'
offensive unit where all eleven starters are in the lineup
once again. Top prospects here include tackle Rick
Vornadore (6-2, 225, Sr.), quarterback Jude Basile
(6-0, 180, Sr.), wide receiver Howard Hackley (5-9,
170, Jr.) and last year's leading ground gainer, fullback
Rich Holmes (6-0, 210, Sr.).
The Fighting Scots hope to join with the Chinese
in celebrating "The Year of the Rabbit" by exhibiting
their running talents. Fullback Rich Holmes, who usually
counts more on his power plunges than shiftiness,
spearheads the Scots' ground game. In 126 tries last
year. Holmes was dumped only one time for a sevenyard loss, while piling up 480 yards rushing. The firstteam All-District back averaged 3.8 yards per carry and
finished as the Scots' leading scorer with his seven
touchdowns for 42 points.

Right behind him is returning tailback Melvin
Morrisette who rambled for 206 yards in only three
games before being sidelined with a knee injury that
required surgery.
Morrisette's starting assignment, however, is being
challenged by 5-10, 200-pound sophomore Dave Green
who could be Edinboro's most explosive runner since
record-breaking rusher Al Raines.
Giving the Scots added depth in the running corps
is sophomore Bryon Libert (6-2, 195).
Edinboro opponents will face double trouble as the
Fighting Scots also have a potent air attack to augment
their ground game. Last year, Basile flipped a record
1,175 yards and connected on six aerial scores. The
senior field general can become the career TD passing
leader by adding only three more strikes to his current
13 touchdown passes.
Backing him up at the quarterback slot is 6-2
junior Dan McHenry, one of the big surprises in
spring drills. Anxiously awaiting the aerial barrage are
split ends Howard Hackley, tight end Steve Larson and
flanker Wes Bain. Hackley tallied 31 receptions last
year for 472 yards and needs only one reception to
topple Jim Romaniszyn's career mark of 57 catches.
Both Larson and Bain hauled the pigskin down ten
times apiece for respective 181 and 152 yard totals.
Helping Vornadore to pave the way up front are
senior guard Andre Wachenheimer (6-2, 220), center
Doug Goodman (6-1, 205), guard Lou Provenzano (6-0,
220) and tackle Greg Hampy (6-2, 235). Also in the
thick of the battle is converted defensive tackle Rich
Radzavich (6-4, 255) who is now vying for the starting
center berth.
Defensively, the search is on for a pair of line
backers, but the rest of the Scots' unit is fairly well in

tact. The secondary is led by seniors Dave Seigh and
Dan Smith, along with junior standouts George Miller
and Jim Terry. Miller finished sixth on last year's tackle
chart with 54 hits to his credit while picking off a pair
of enemy aerials. He also proved to be highly instru
mental in blocking several point after touchdown kicks
and field goal attempts. Seigh chipped in with a pair
of interceptions and led the squad in fumble recoveries
with three.
Adding talented help to this group are letterwinners Kevin Campbell and Brad Crawshaw.
Providing the muscle up front are tackles Don
DIugos (6-3, 240) and Jeff Shaw (6-2, 230) who are
split by middle guard Ron Gooden (6-4, 250). Sand
wiching the front wall are seniors Jim Barto (6-2, 195)
and Jan Gefert (6-1, 205) at the terminals.
Both tackle Rick McMahon (6-0, 220) and middle
guard Mike Ferrare are coming off standout perform
ances in the spring and will see plenty of front line duty.
The key to solidifying the defense lies in finding
replacementsfor graduated linebackers Jim McClureand
Mike Schnirel who led the team with 104 tackles
apiece last year. Scheduled to step into the vacated
posts are Kevin Erickson (6-1, 210) and Greg Sullivan
(6-1, 180).
"Even though the upcoming season looks bright,"
summarized Scot pilot Bill McDonald, "everyone else
has improved like we have. Slippery Rock has a great
edge with their three straight conference champion
ships and Indiana, as well as Clarion, is still tough.
We also have to face some powerful independents in
Fairmont and Baldwin-Wallace."

Winning Becomes Tradition Under McDonald
While he directed Indiana University's offense, the
Big Indians registered 24 regular season victories
against only three defeats. In his final season at Indiana,
the Tribe finished unbeaten in nine outings and proved
to be the greatest offensive unit in the school's history
with a 40 points-per-game average.
The Wall, Pa., native guided Hopewell High
School to a 46-25-1 slate during his seven-year tenure
as head coach. His 1960 ball club defeated Braddock
High 7-6 and broke their WPIAL 58-game winning
streak while his 1963 team captured the Midwest
Class A Championship.
The Fighting Scots' grid pilot served as an assistant
coach at Braddock High School through two unde
feated seasons and also at Latrobe High.
McDonald holds both a B.S. degree in education
and a M.Ed. from the Univ. of Cincinnati where he
played linebacker under Sid Gillman and his assistant
coach Paul Dietzel. This team was the original "Chinese
Bandits," a defensive unit which later became famous
at Louisiana State University. Gillman was head coach
of the San Diego Chargers for 12 years and became
general manager for the Houston Oilers after the
1972 season.
After graduation from Cincinnati in 1952, the
Scots' mentor continued his education in post graduate
work at Penn State, Pitt and Indiana (Pa.) Universities.

Head Coach - Bill McDonald

Bill McDonald carries an impressive 34-17-5
record into the 1975 season aher six years of
leading the Fighting Scots' gridiron program. Under his
direction, ESC gridders posted identical 9-1 slates in
both 1970 and 1971 while piling up a winning streak of
21 straight regular season games. His 34-17-5 mark
puts him at the top of the winning percentage list among
Edinboro State football coaches with a 67 per cent
reading.
After an initial 4-4-1 season in 1969, his Fighting
Scots became the greatest in ESC history when they
went 8-0 in regular season play, captured the Lambert
Bowl, won the Pennsylvania Conference championship
and earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His
1971 team followed up with an undefeated regular
season (9-0) and a second straight PC Western
Division title. Over 60 individual and team records have
been established during his first six years at the reigns.
Upon completion of 1970's successful venture,
numerous post-season laurels were bestowed upon the
Scot's mentor. The Football Writers Association of New
York named McDonald Coach of the Year in the East
while the NAIA Area VIII and District 18 coaches as
well as the Pennsylvania Collegiate Press Association
also rewarded him with Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to his assignment at Edinboro, McDonald
served as assistant football coach at Indiana Univ. of
Pa. for three years and head coach at Hopewell High
School from 1958-1965.

staff is top talent scouter Jim Gilstrap who tutors the
offensive line. Gilstrap returned to Edinboro last season
after spending four years as offensive line coach at
Illinois State University in Bloomington, III. He
originally was a member of the Scot staff in 1968 and
1969 when he netted an outstanding group of grid
prospects who proved to be highly successful in the
Fighting Scot football program. A graduate of Clay
High School in South Bend, Indiana, Gilstrap received
his B.S. degree from Western Michigan University after
lettering three years as a center for the Broncos. He
earned his M.S. at Southern Illinois University and
served as a graduate assistant on the S.I.U. football
staff. His coaching past also includes two years as
assistant coach at Case Tech in Cleveland, Ohio.

ANDY ROBERTSON - Secondary
Jim Gilstrap

Andy Robertson

FRED REMMY - Defensive Coordinator
Commencing his fourth year of molding the
Fighting Scots' stubborn defense is Fred Remmy, former
head football recruiter and freshman coach at the
University of Miaitii. Last fall,, Remmy spent most
of his time putting together the Scots' highly touted^
secondary, while this year most of his efforts in
coordinating the defense will be directed at the line
backers and the defensive front line. The Verona, Pa.,
native graduated from Miami in 1959 and began his
coaching career in 1960 as an assistant at his hometown
high school of Verona. He then spent a two-year stint
as head coach and athletic director at the United States
Coast Guard Receiving Center. Prior to returning to
Miami in 1970, Remmy established successful grid
programs at the Florida high schools of Dunedin
(1965-67) and Lakeland (1968-70). Fred, his wife, Pat,
and their two children, Rick and Stacy, now make Edinboro their northern home.

Grooming Edinboro's talent studded secondary is
fourth year coach Andy Robertson who last year
directed his efforts toward producing Edinboro State's
record-breaking passing game. Andy was an AllWPIAL quarterback at Hopewell High School while
playing under Bill McDonald. After graduation in 1964,
he traveled to the University of Southern Colorado
where he played halfback for three years on the nation
ally recognized Colorado team. After receiving a B.A.
degree in 1968, he served as an assistant grid coach
at Florence (Colo.) before returning to the Keystone
State in 1969 as a grid aide at Derry Area High. An
assistantship at the University of North Carolina during
1970 was interrupted by a 1 %-year "call to duty" with
the Armed Forces in Germany. The Scot coach lives
in Edinboro with his wife, Becky, and their son Greg.

JIIVI BOWEN - Offensive Coordinator
This veteran coach is back at home this year guiding
the Fighting Scots' offensive attack while working
primarily with the ESC backfield. Bowen is entering his
ninth season with the Scots and has served as the
backfield coach tutoring such greats as Joe Sanford,
Jim Romaniszyn, Bob Mengerink and Al Raines. Jim
was head football coachat Fairview High School for 10
years and compiled an outstanding record of 76 wins
and 12 losses. His grid teams captured four league
championships while riding 25 and 19 game winning
streaks. The knowledgeable Scot coach graduated from

Assistant Coaches: Barney Rutkowski, Jeff Idzik, Tom Herman and
Dale Grimes.

A Team Behind the Team
GUY CONTI - Receivers
Entering his fifth year of helping move the Fighting
Scots' offense is Guy Conti, who was also recently
named Edinboro State's head basketball coach. He will
be grooming one of the best setsof receivers in Edinboro
State's history, a group which last year teamed for a
record-breaking 1,387 yards in the air. The Clarion grad
served as head football coach at Northwestern High in
1971 and baseball mentor at Edinboro State (1970-71),
where his diamond teams posted record-breaking
seasons. Conti spent a professional baseball stint with
the Houston Astros organization as a catcher. The
versatile athlete was an outstanding football player at
Freeport High and Clarion State as a quarterback. He
has also served as a teacher, vice-principal, head
baseball mentor and assistant basketball coach at
Northwestern High School. Conti, his wife, Janet, and
their children, Kim, Curt, Craig and Kelly, reside in
Edinboro.

AL HALL - Athletic Director
Since Al Hall's appointment as Athletic Director in
1968, Edinboro State has enjoyed one of the most
respected and most successful collegiate athletic pro
grams in the East. Through his efforts, Edinboro State
College has become a focal point for athletics in North
western Pennsylvania and has hosted numerous
championship events. Typical of this was the desig
nation of ESC as the site for the 1972 National YMCA
Diving and Swimming Championships, the largest
swimming meet in the world. Under his leadership,
ESC's sports program has vastly expanded and attained
new memberships in the ECAC and NCAA while
building a coaching staff that has compiled the College's
best record in history. Al's selection to numerous sport
committees in the Erie area along with posts in both the
ECAC and Pennsylvania Conference bear out his
dedication to the world of athletics. A graduate of
Baldwin-Wallace College, he served as Assistant
Director of Athletics at Akron University for two years
and piloted Akron's cross country teams to champion
ship finishes for 12 seasons. Al, his wife, Pam, daughter,
Beth, and their son. Dale, reside in Edinboro.

Bob Klingler

Paul Newman

PAUL NEWMAN - Publicity Director
Paul Newman began his duties eight years ago as
ESC's first Sports Information Director and now also
serves as Assistant to the President for External Affairs.
Paul is a 1964 graduate of Edinboro where he earned
both his B.S. degree and M.Ed. while majoring in
English. Prior to joining the Scots, he held a teaching
position in Ashtabula, Ohio, for three years. In con
nection with his duties, he is also the District 18
Publicity Chairman for the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics and recently completed a twoyear term as President of the NAIA's Sports Information
Director's Association. Paul, his wife, Connie, and their
children, Paul, Jr., Michele and Scott, make their home
in Edinboro.

BOB KLINGLER - Team Trainer
Giving Fighting Scot athletes the tops in pro
fessional medical care and producing top-notch staffs
of student trainers has been the trademark of trainer
Bob Klingler who begins his ninth season at Edinboro
State. The 1952 Lock Haven grad ventured to Hermann
School of Physical Therapy in Houston, Texas and be
came a registered physical therapist in 1954. He later
received his M.S. from Bucknell. Prior to accepting his
ESC post, Klingler taught at Milton Hershey, a private
boys' school in Hershey, Pa., where he served as the
Spartans' head football mentor, head track coach and
assistant basketball coach. Both his cinder and cage
teams never experienced a losing season, while his
grid teams continually posted successful campaigns
in the powerful Capitol Area Conference. Bob, his wife,
Jill, and daughter, July, make their home in Washington
Township.

CAPSULE OUTLOOK: Edinboro State and West
Virginia Wesleyan will lock horns for the first time in the
two schools' history when they meet on the Bobcat's
Ross Field in what will be the season opener for both
teams. Head Coach Kent Carpenter feels that his
team will be vastly improved since a major rebuilding
program which began three years ago should start to
show its dividends. The Bobcats lost only five seniors
from last year's squad and the bulk of sophomore and
junior starters have logged plenty of varsity playing time.
Offensively, running back Steve Vannoy should spear
head the Bobcats' running attack behind quarterback
John Luchs. Anchoring Wesleyan's defensive unit will
be tackles Larry Harris (6-3, 250) and Barry Myers
(6-2, 220).

TOP RETURNEES: Mike Maximin (FB), Terry Galambus (OB), Larry Goodine (SE), Tony Monday (DB),
Harold Gillard (DT), Rich Winans (DE).
CAPSULE OUTLOOK: Fairmont State and Edinboro
will meet in the Erie Stadium to commemorate 50 years
of football in the recently renovated facility. The Falcons
are seeking their third straight West Virginia Inter
collegiate Athletic Conference championship and will
call upon some highly impressive offensive performers
in their quest for the crown. Fullback Mike Maximin
became the all-time rushing leader at Fairmont with his
total of 2,193 yards after last season and quarterback
Terry Galambus moved to third on the all-time Falcon
passing list with his 1,794 yards. Also on hand is split
end Larry Goodine whose 1,390 yards in pass receptions
ranks him second among all-time receivers at Fairmont.

TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS—The Fighting Scots will de
pend upon their defense to turn the trick once again when they face
the highly touted Falcons in Erie Stadium.

CAPSULE OUTLOOK: Although this is Saginaw
Valley's first year of intercollegiate football, opponents
should by no means be lulled into a false sense of
security. Cinderella has nothing over this club that last
year acquired Coach Frank "Muddy" Waters from
Hillsdale College following a $1 million gift from a
Saginaw philanthropist. Waters compiled a 20-year
record of 138-46-5 at Hillsdale, along with one NAIA
national championship and seven bowl appearances.
The new head coach, who also serves as Athletic
Director, already has 130 football candidates from
which to fill his 22 starting positions. Sixty-five players
return from a squad that played a junior varsity
schedule last season to give the Fighting Cardinals an
experienced nucleus. Among the returnees are five prep
All-Americans and no less than 12 quarterback
candidates. Also on tap are a host of incoming freshmen
who were all-state performers. The top caliber recruits
include some junior college transfers to help the
Cardinals wing their way through the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

HOME OF THE FIGHTING SCOTS - SOX HARRISON STADIUM
Serving as home for ESC athletes and fans is Sox
Harrison Stadium. The edifice was dedicated in the fall
of 1965 in honor of “Sox" Harrison who served as head
football and basketball coach at the College for 35 years.
His 1931-32 cage record of 11 wins and 1 loss still
stands as one of the best marks ever posted by an
Edinboro basketball team. Sox still enjoys watching the
Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoons as one of their
most ardent fans.
Complete facilities are located beneath the grand
stand area, which seats 3,000 people. Locker space for
both the home and visiting teams, the coaching staff
offices and locker room, the officials' dressing room.

a 220 straight-away and asphalt approaches for the
field events highlight the home of the cinder sport.
Bleacher seats on the visitors side of the stadium
bring the total seating capacity to 5,500.
A new scoreboard, one of the largest in the Con
ference, was added at the south end of the field last year.
