Edinboro Hosts Northwood Institute
The Game
Today's game is sponsored by Walker
Brothers Buick-Chevrolet. It also marks
"Bruce Baumgartner Day," in honor of the
Olympic gold medalist. The Edinboro
University head wrestling coach will exe
cute the coin toss in the pre-game cere
monies.
The Records
Edinboro is coming off an impressive
35-13 showing over the University of Buf
falo while Northwood fell to Ferris State
last Saturday to stand at 0-1. The Scots
won 7 of 11 games last season while the
Northmen went 2-6.
The Scots are tough at home posting
20 victories against just two losses and a
tie under coach Tom Hollman. In addi
tion to their 20 wins, Edinboro has fallen
to Liberty (17-7 in ’88) and lUP (20-17 in
'91) while tying Slippery Rock 14-14 ('88).
The Series
The Fighting Scots downed the
Northmen in Michigan last year and hold
a 1-0 series edge. Edinboro posted the 2514 win on a rain-soaked field as AllAmerican linebacker Jason Perkins'
fourth quarter fumble recovery set up a
Steve Clare one-yard touchdown run to
clinch the win.
The Coaches
Hollman, in his fifth-year directing
the Boro program, boasts a 30-14-1
(.674%) slate. His winning percentage at
home of .888 makes Edinboro extremely
tough at Sox Harrison. The Scots are 18-51 in the rugged PSAC Western Division
during Hollman's tenure and have earned
two trips to the NCAA II playoffs. His
nine-year collegiate coaching mark stands
at 54-25-2.
Northwood is led by sixth-year coach
Tom Danna. He has earned 15 wins in 48
decisions counting the loss against Ferris
State last weekend.
The Offenses
The Scots' Larry Jackson came off the
bench to rush for 207 yards and earn
PSAC West Co-Player of the Week honors
against Buffalo. The sophomore tailback
scored three times on rims of 30 yards, 16
and 8 to lead the win. Starter Derrick
Russell (6 carries, 19 yds.) was slightly

injured but should see action this week.
Fullback Tom Tedder (4-11) did a great
job blocking and will start his 25th
straight game for the Scots.
Quarterback Jody Dickerson will
once again call the shots. He connected
on ll-of-21 passes last week for 121 yards
and rushed 11 times for 45 more. Sean
Seibert (2-3 passing) also saw time
against the Bulls. Wrentie Martin (5 catch
es, 72 yds.), Paul Stone (2-18) and Brian
Heebsh (1-13) remain key targets for the
Scots.
Up front, tackles Mike Kegarise and
Tony Tighe, guards Chadd Wallick and
Scott Nickel and center Gordy Hitchcock
cleared the way for nearly 500 yards of
offense last week.
Northwood's offense sputtered last
week but gave the Boro all they could
handle last year in Michigan. (Quarter
back Jim Kurlinski (5-16, 56 yds.) will be
over center looking for veteran wideout
James Cooks. A pair of fullbacks, James
Causey (10-47) and John Houvenor (1033) turned in strong efforts against Ferris
State. Academic All-American guard
Chip Lott is the Northmen's best up front.
The Defenses
Edinboro's success against Universi
ty of Buffalo was due to their ability to
get to the quarterback. The Scots recorded
three sacks and eight tackles for loss in
the win. All-American linebacker Jason
Perkins led the team with nine stops
while DE Devas Simmons recorded four
tackles and forced a Buffalo fumble in the
end zone where he recovered for the
Scots' third score. Freshman linebacker
Michael Sims turned in an outstanding
effort in his collegiate debut, recording
four stops and deflecting four passes.
Joining Simmons up front will be
3

tackles Russell Cray and Rob Harmer and
end Anthony Ross (4 stops, 2 for loss and
1 sack) while Mike Edwards (5) joins Sims
and Perkins at linebacker.
The secondary features All-American
Georj Lewis and Mario Houston (4) at the
corners while veteran Mike Barnes and
freshman Rick Walker team up at safety.
Northwood's strength is the defense,
one which ranked third in scoring
defense and ninth overall last season in
the NAIA. Linebackers Johnel Davis and
David Sanders are both pre-season AllAmericans and each had eleven tackles in
the setback last Saturday. Defensive end
James Whitlow is a four-year starter on
the interior while back Anthony Miles led
the team with a dozen stops and one
break up against Ferris.
Special Teams/Kicking Game
Edinboro starts a familiar twosome
in place-kicker Scott Rupert (5-5 PAT's, 02 FG) and punter Gary Lhotsky (33.8 YPP,
long 38) while Northwood counters with
a pair of four-year players in PK Scott
Rinn (1-1 PAT, 1-1 FG, long 33) and
punter Chris Keeton (38.3, long 46)
One of the bright spots for the North
men last week was the kick off return
efforts of James Cooks (6-142-23.7 YPR)
and runningback Henry Russell (2-57).
The Scots feature Jackson but Buffalo did
not kick the ball his way last week. Paul
Stone (2-33) and Derrick Russell (1-14) are
the 'up men' on the return squad.
Next Game
Edinboro is on the road as they travel
north to battle Southern Connecticut. The
Scots have an off week on September 26,
then open PSAC West play hosting Clari
on University on October 3.

Foster F. Diebold

Now in his thirteenth year as
president of Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania, Foster F. Diebold is the
fourteenth chief executive officer of
the institution of higher learning that
has come to acclaim in the last
decade as one of Pennsylvania's and
the nation’s finest. He has brought a
vigorous educational and moral lead
ership, a strengthening of the spirit of
community, a clear sense of direction
and purpose, and a dimension of
multicultural pluralism and diversity.
Much has been accomplished
during President Diebold's tenure.
The University has returned to finan
cial health. Significant facilities and
grounds improvements have been
achieved, with several of the historic
structures on campus restored to
their original splendor. Academic
programs have been emphasized and
improved, with more than 100 degree
offerings now available. Enrollment
gains have been unprecedented in
both numbers and academic quality.
International linkages have been
established with institutions in sever
al other countries, and Edinboro Uni
versity's disabled student services
program continues to gamer acclaim
as one of the finest among all colleges
and universities in the United States.
Widely recognized as a leader in edu
cation both here and abroad. Presi

Prior to his presidency of Edin
boro University, President Diebold
was president of the University of
Alaska from 1977 to 1979. Before that,
he was executive secretary to the
Board of Regents and special assis
tant to the president of the University
of Alaska Statewide System. From
1969 to 1976, he was director of
Development and Planning at Kean
College in New Jersey and a member
of the graduate faculty at that institu
tion; and from 1965 to 1969, he was
assistant superintendent of the Nep
tune Township (New Jersey) Public
Schools.
Recognized for his extensive
experience in the field of education
management. President Diebold’s
scholarly achievements in the disci
pline of applied ethics in higher edu
cation deserve special mention. The
model statement he authored for the
American Association of State Col
leges and Universities, "Ethical Prac
tices for College Presidents," was
unanimously adopted by that profes
sional organization and published as
policy for the chief executives of its
nearly 400 member institutions
nationwide. It is the first formally
adopted ethical practices and policy
statement for higher education presi
dents.
For his leadership on an interna
tional scale and for his many contri
7

butions to the advancement of higher
education and enrichment of an
emerging culture in Pakistan, Presi
dent Diebold was decorated with
prestigious gold medals from three
Pakistani universities. The awards for
educational eminence were presented
during visits to the Edinboro campus
by official Pakistani delegations.
Most recently. President Diebold
was honored by the Government of
Pakistan with the presentation of the
degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris
causa) presented at the Government
House in the City of Karachi. The cer
emony was attended by the presi
dents of the various universities
holding linkage agreements together
with Edinboro University and many
high-ranking officials of the Govern
ment of Pakistan.
A staunch advocate of a
statewide system of public universi
ties in Pennsylvania, President
Diebold supported the enabling legis
lation for the State System of Higher
Education (Act 188 of 1982) and saw
the State System come to existence in
1983 as a member of the transition
team. He currently serves on the Sys
tem's Executive Council of Presidents
and on the boards of the Pennsylva
nia Academy for the Profession of
Teaching, the Pennsylvania State Ath
letic Conference, and the University
Center at Harrisburg.
Active in community affairs, he
serves on the Board of Directors of
the Erie Conference on Community
Development and the United Way of
Erie County, the Board of Corpora
tors of both St. Vincent Health Center
and Hamot Medical Center, and on
the Executive Committee of the
French Creek Council, Boy Scouts of
America. He is also a member of the
Marine Bank Advisory Board, the
Advisory Board of the McMannis
Educational Trust Fund, and the
Pittsburgh Plate Glass Corporation
Scholarship Review Committee.

Bruce Baumgartner Day - September 12
Edinhoro Honors Bruce Baumgartner Tonight Banquet Set for 7:30 p.m., Van Houten Dining Hall

Athletic Director James K. McDonald
Edinboro University's athletic program was placed under the talented
and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis
on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship foundation has become his top
priority while numerous changes and innovations have also keyed the Scots'
athletic program under his direction.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the Edinboro community have announced plans for "Bruce
Baumgartner Day," in honor of the 1992 Olympic gold
medalist. Baumgartner became the first American
wrestler ever to medal in three Olympics (gold in 1984,
silver 1988) with his 8-0 gold medal performance over
Canada's Jeff Thue on August 6.
A banquet in Baumgartner's honor will cap the
day's activities, with ceremonies set for tonight in the
University's Van Houten Dining Hall. Tickets are
$20.00 per person and may be obtained at the door.
Checks can be made payable to the Edinboro University
Booster Club. Reserved tables with seating for eight, six
and four are available for purchase and are recommend
ed for business, organizations and other large groups.
All proceeds wiU benefit a scholarship named for
Bruce Baumgartner.
The banquet is expected to feature a video honoring
the Olympic champion, as well as numerous gifts from
elected officials and other dignitaries.

Through his efforts more than $4 million has been raised during the
past eleven years. The funds generated by the energetic athletic director's
efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's men and women athletes who compete
in the Scots sixteen intercollegiate sports.
In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected winning tradition in
intercollegiate athletics, the former health and physical education professor has
vastly expanded the University's summer activities.
Sixty camps were sponsored by the Fighting Scots Booster Club this
past summer on the University's campus. Sox Harrison Stadium was the site for
the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers first scrimmage, an event the veteran ath
letic director hopes to bring back to the area each year.
The personable athletic director also introduced Edinboro's Hall of
Fame program which has evolved into an annual year-ending event to honor
present and past athletes.

Bruce Baumgartner
Edinboro University Head Wrestling Coach

'

McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12 years served as
the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing
season while his teams compiled an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses.
During that span, his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Confer
ence crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that netted
trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27 University records
and made 19 post-season appearances while four of his players were named
All-Americans.
Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald served as assis
tant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High
School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia.

1992 Olympic Gold Medalist
1988 Olympic Silver Medalist
' 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist

In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical education from
West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a master's degree in health
from the University of Buffalo.

The first U.S. wrestler ever to win three Olympic medals.

As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan and was
twice voted both AP and UPI basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the sec
ond leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a
game, and led his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City,
Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Tournament Team in 1959 and 1960.

Defeated his 1992 Olympic opponents by a combined score of
35-1 with an 11-second pin of one wrestler.
Regarded as the greatest heavyweight wrestler that the
United States has ever produced.
Has not lost to an American wrestler in over 12 years.
8

In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the Year by the
eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was honored as one of the top ten
finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll. McDonald's honors also include
selection to the West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member
ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of extensive commu
nity involvement. He was Little League Baseball director for four years and also
held a four-year post as a member of the General McLane School Board. He and
his wife, Mary Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike and Matthew.

Scots Look to Rebound; Eye Trip to the NCAA IIs
It's hard to say that a 7-4 season was
disappointing. But when expectations
were to advance to the NCAA II playoffs
for the third consecutive year, the 1991
won-lost mark was not what the Scots
had envisioned.
Anticipating that the 1992 pre-season
polls will have Edinboro back in the
national picture. Football Gazette will rank
the Scots number eight. It appears the
pressure will be on once again. Expecta
tions yes, but the Fighting Scots' recent
success has created them.
The Hollman Era of 1988-92 has
Edinboro posting a 29-14-1 slate, includ
ing 18 of 24 wins in the rugged Pennsyl
vania State Athletic Conference Western
Division. Two trips to the national play
offs, co-championship of the PSAC, forty
school records, two Division II Player of
the Year finalists and 17 All-Americans
are among the accomplishments. All in
the last four years.
Tom Hollman begins his fifth season
with the Scots and boasts a 53-25-2 record
in eight years on the Division II level. His
winning percentage of .663 is among the
nation's best in small-college football.
Edinboro returns 33 lettermen and 17
starters (including specialties) in 1992 and
should once again battle for the PSAC
West title. Home encounters include the
University of Buffalo and Northwood
(MI), as well as PSAC western division
rivals Clarion (Homecoming), Slippery
Rock and Shippensburg.
The Scots travel to Southern Con
necticut, Lock Haven, California, lUP and
Millersville with hopes of extending their
season beyond November 14.
In 1991, Edinboro played five of their
first seven games on the road, and ulti
mately it cost them a trip to the national
playoffs. This season shows more of a
balance, with the Plaid hosting three of
the first four games at Sox Harrison Sta
dium. With a 19-2-1 home record under
Hollman, look for the Scots to come out
of the blocks quickly in '92.

Seibert can still lay claim to Edinboro's
lone NCAA II playoff win when he engi
neered a convincing 38-14 margin at Vir
ginia Union in 1990.
A veteran crew of receivers returns,
led by Wrentie Martin (39-607-3 TDs),
Paul Stone (9-117) and tight end Brian
Heebsh (13-162-2 TDs). Martin and Heebsh were PSAC West second team selec
tions in '91 and all three bring a wealth of
game experience to the offense.
The running back position is solid
with Derrick Russell (68-403-3 TDs),
Larry Jackson (29-188-2 TDs), Corey Hill
and Vidal Farr. Someone will have to
cariy the bulk with the departure of AllAmerican Lester Frye. Three-year starter
Tom Tedder (41-173-1 TD) returns at full
back and could be the PSAC West's best
at this spot. Tedder will get plenty of
backup support from sophomore Chris
Snyder.

Offensive Line
With the graduation of All-American
Curtis Rose and All-PSAC pick Wally
Spisak, the Scots must fill two rather large
pairs of shoes. PSAC West second team
choice Mike Kegarise has pro potential
with his 6-7, 300 pound frame. Starters
Scott Nickel, Tony Tighe and Gordy
Hitchcock also return, as will Chad Wallick, Det Betti and Dave Nowacki. Quality
depth is key, so Hollman will most likely
call on a pair of top recruits to help
anchor the offensive front.

Defensive Line
Gone is All-American tackle John
Messura, so the interior will highlight
some new faces. Experience does return
in Otha Davidson (22 tackles) and Russell
Cray (42) while LB Devas Simmons (36) is
likely to convert to a down lineman spot.
End Anthony Mariani (48 tackles, 8 for
loss) also returns and had a solid '91 in
his initial year. Messura's spot must be
filled if the Scots are to improve on their
150-yard per game rushing yield of last
year.

er 240 yards and three touchdt

All-American and All-PSAC West
choice Jason Perkins (135 tackles) returns
to solidify a very good corps of lineback
ers. Perkins was sensational in'91, picking
off two passes, recording nine tackles for
11

losses and adding four sacks to his team
high tackle mark. Perkins has been cho
sen as a 1992 pre-season first team AllAmerican by the Sporting News.
Returning sophomore Steve Russell will
give help after recording 41 tackles in '91
and tying Perkins for the team lead in
interceptions with two.
Veteran Steve Nagy and newcomer
Mike Edwards both looked good in
spring workouts and will make heavy
contributions. Simmons can play both the
down position and linebacker and should
be an impact player in 1992.

Secondary
With the return of All-American
Georj Lewis and PSAC West second team
pick Mike Barnes, the Scots' defensive
backfield returns plenty of experience.
1990 PSAC West Rookie of the Year Mario
Houston will be at the other corner spot.
Houston was in on 75 stops last year and
led the team with 12 pass deflections.
Lewis was a third team choice by
Football Gazette last year and has started
34 consecutive games at the corner. His 50
tackles also earned him a first-team spot
on the PSAC West All-Star squad. Barnes,
a free safety/linebacker with outstanding
speed and toughness, was third on the
squad in '91 with 83 tackles. Only
linebackers Perkins and Joel Marratta (88)
were in on more tackles than Barnes.
Backup quarterback Sean Seibert has
the inside track at the vacant free safety
spot, vacated by four-year starter Wade
Smith. Mike White and a host of top cal
iber freshmen give Edinboro a great sec
ondary in 1992.

Specialties
A pair of starters return in punter
Gary Lhotsky and place-kicker Scott
Rupert. Lhotsky earned second team
PSAC West honors a year ago with his
38.1 yards per punt. His average was sec
ond best in the division and fifth overall
in the state. Lhotsky has averaged just
under 37 ypp over his two-year career.
Rupert, just a sophomore, had a solid
ft^shman year in '91, finishing second on
the team with 36 points. He was true on
5-of-7 field goal tries and converted 21
extra point attempts. A great all-around
athlete, Rupert led the Scot baseball team
last spring with a .398 batting average.

Head Coach Tom Hollman
In January 1988, Edinboro University hired Tom Hollman, Athens, Ohio, as
its eleventh head football coach in the school's history. Hollman came to Edin
boro from Ohio University, where he was the defensive coordinator.

RENTALS

Hollman, beginning his fifth year, has the Scot program back in the national
spotlight. At Edinboro, he has earned 29 wins against just 14 losses and one tie
and owns an impressive 18-5-1 slate against the PSAC Western Division.
In 1989, he was named the top coach in the East Region by the National
Football Coaches Association and also tabbed the top coach in the PSAC West.
In 1990, he guided the Scots to their first-ever NCAA II playoff win as Edinboro
routed Virginia Union and advanced to the national quarterfinals.
"Edinboro has been a great experience, and I like the direction of the pro
gram," Hollman said.
"As a coach, I have been fortunate to coach at many different levels, from
high school to Division I. The Division II level here at Edinboro is very appeal
ing to me in relation to my career goals. It is a great feeling to be a head coach at
this level."
Tom Hollman

Hollman's educational background begins with a high school diploma from
Memorial High School in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his undergraduate
degree in education from Ohio Northern University in 1968. Three'years later
Hollman received his master of science degree in location from Xavier Uni
versity in Cincinnati, Ohio.
While at Ohio Northern, Hollman was a three-year starter for the football
team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and offensive end during
his junior and senior years. He holds the school record with 13 career intercep
tions and earned All-American and All-District honors during the 1966 and
1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years during his stay at
Ohio Northern.

"Edinboro has been a
great experience, and I
like the direction of the
program."

A chronological look at Hollman's coaching career begins in 1968 as an
assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. From there, Hollman
moved on to Greenville High School in Ohio where he became head coach from
1971-73. His Greenville squads posted an impressive 26-2-2 mark during his
three-year stay.

"Want to Try Some - Just Ask”

Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School as head coach for the
1974 and 1975 seasons, where his squad recorded 15 wins against three setbacks
and two ties. Fremont was the Buckeye Conference champ in '74, unbeaten at 9-

In '76, Hollman moved on to the collegiate ranks where he was the defen
sive coordinator for his alma mater at Ohio Northern University.
The following year, Hollman accepted the head coach position at Wooster
College (OH) and guided his squad to the best four-year record in the school's
history (24-11-1).
In 1981, Hollman took an assistant coaching spot with Ball State University
which he held through the '84 campaign. Then, beginning in 1985 Hollman held
the defensive coordinator position at Ohio University.
"It has been a very comfortable transition for me," Hollman added. "I have
found the community to be supportive and the administration is giving me
every opportunity to be successful here at Edinboro," he concluded.

”I Still feel one of the most important things about
football on the Division II level is to make it fun for
the players involved . . . My initial goal for this
team when I got here (Edinboro), and it still
remains today, was to make football an enjoyable
experience for this team and its coaching staff.”

year with the Plaid as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Former understudy of
head coach Tom Hollman at Greenville High School, Mark brings extensive experience

Walker Bros. Buick-Chevrolet has been in the automobile business in Edinboro
since 1916 making us one of the oldest dealers in the country. However, we are mere
youngsters compared to Edinboro University. Thru the decades our families have
watched the school grow and mature into today's University. Not by accident, we have
seen the town of Edinboro grow and mature at the same time, with much of that growth
being former Edinboro students who stayed and made homes here after graduating. For
this we say, "thank youj Edinboro University."
Edinboro University offers much more to the region than a fine education at a
reasonable price. Almost daily there is either a cultural or athletic event right here in
our own backyard providing great entertainment. Besides the entertainment, many of
us use the physical facilities of the University. For this we say, "thank you, Edinboro
University."
Finally, for those of us in business in the Edinboro area, the University provides a
great economic benefit. Local patronage from University employees, students and all
the spinoff emplo3nnent created by the University is what makes us able to be a major
sponsor of Edinboro athletics and today's game. For all this we say, "thank you,
Edinboro University."

Greetings:
f

On behalf on the Board of Governors for the State System of Higher Education
and the Office of the Chancellor, I am pleased to welcome you to today’s exciting athletic
event.
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) is a nationally respected
athletic association. Last season, over 40 teams were among the best in the coimtry,
competing in regional and national championship competitions in football, basketball,
swimming, track and field, wrestling, field hockey, tennis, lacrosse, cross country,
softball, and baseball. Many athletes earned All-American and top scholar recognition
for their work in the classroom and in the athletic arena. The efforts of these women
and men who represent their imiversities and the entire State System, in victory or
defeat, are supported and applauded.
i

/

The outstanding university coaching staffs that provide leadership, instruction,
and encouragement also are to be commended for their contributions to the PSAC.
Nothing can replace the time and talent they give to their students and universities.
The Board of Governors, the university presidents, the campus conummities, and I
hope you will continue supporting our State System universities and their athletic
programs during the 1992-93 academic year. Your attendance is appreciated.

The recent success of the Edinboro University football program has carried over
into the classroom. No better examples than the accomplishments of senior quarterback/free safety Sean Seibert and All-American defensive back Georj Lewis.

Seibert will earn a political science
degree this December in just seven
semesters of attending Edinboro Univer
sity. His 3.0+ cumulative grade point
average and contributions to the Scot
football program make Sean a true schol
ar-athlete. He has been recognized the
past three years for his outstanding
accomplishments by the University.

Lewis, who last year earned AllAmerican honors at defensive back, has
found the academic and athletic balance
to complete his business administration
degree in four years. His 3.0+ cumulative
grade point is outstanding, considering
he has started every game since his fresh
man year, a string of 34 consecutive,
entering the 1992 season.

Pete Zapadka Wins PSAC Media Award
Pete Zapadka, former sports reporter at
the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is the winner
of the fourth annua! Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference Media Award.
He left his position in the sports depart
ment in May after nearly 11 years to accept
a position as an executive producer with
the Post-Gazette Radio Network.
The award is given by the sports
information directors of the PSAC to a
media member who has supported and
promoted conference athletics.
Zapadka is the second Pittsburgh media
person to receive the award. Ray KienzI,
sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Press, was
the first recipient of the award in 1989.
Ross Navel of the Lock Haven Express
and former sports information director at
Lock Haven University, was the 1990
honoree and Skip Mutter of the Patriot
News in Harrisburg was the award winner
last year.
Zapadka is being recognized for his
dedication to excellence in sports reporting
and for the many contributions he has
made to the PSAC over the years. He is
known for his honesty, integrity, diligence
and hard work.
In addition to his outstanding efforts to
get coverage in the paper for PSAC

Pete Zapadka
athletes from the greater Pittsburgh area,
Zapadka has been a valuable friend and
confidant to the sports information directors
throughout the PSAC, not only those in the
Western Division.
Through his job on the sports staff, he
would regularly fight for listings including

standings, schedules, results, etc. of PSAC
schools in the Post-Gazette. He also was
actively involved in the sports department
of the P-G zone editions and used informa
tion on all sports, not only the traditional
sports of major media interest.
A strong booster of coverage for all
NCAA Division II and III schools plus
NAIA institutions, Zapadka was an initial
supporter of the idea of PSAC press
conferences for football and basketball
when those events were in the formative
stages.
In addition to sports, Zapadka’s hobby
is astronomy and he has written feature
articles for the Post-Gazette’s Science
page on that topic. He is the membership
secretary for the Amateur Astronomy Asso
ciation of Pittsburgh.
A native of Ellwood City, Pa. he earned
a Journalism degree from Point Park
College in Pittsburgh in 1975, and went
to work full-time at the Post-Gazette in
January of 1976. He moved to the sports
department in August, 1981.
Zapadka and his wife, Lynne, live in
Pittsburgh with their two daughters, Allison,
7, and Jessica, 3V2. Lynne works as an
account representative in retail advertising
for the Pittsburgh Press.
