PRESIDENT - FOSTER F. DIEBOLD

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY

educational innovation brought about by the President is a
concept known as “Partnerships in Education and Industry.”
This activity emphasizes an increased level of awareness of the
needs and desires of the educational and industrial com
munities.
A native of Orange, New Jersey, President Diebold served
as president of the University of Alaska from 1977-1979. Prior
to that, he was executive secretary to the board of regents and
special assistant to the president of the University of Alaska’s
Statewide System. From 1969 to 1976, he was director of the
Division of College Development and Planning at Kean
College in New Jersey (formerly Newark State College); and
from 1965 to 1969, he was assistant superintendent of Neptune
Township Public Schools in New Jersey.
Edinboro University’s president holds a bachelor of
science in education from Monmouth College, a master of arts
in educational administration from Seton Hall University; and
he has met course requirements for his doctorate in education
at Rutgers University.

President Foster F. Diebold

Since his appointment as president of Edinboro Univer
sity on August 1, 1979, Foster F. Diebold has initiated a wide
variety of policies/ procedures and programs on the Edinboro
University campus which have been designed to complement
his desire for an increased level of excellence and quality in
higher education.
Noted for his extensive experience in the field of education
management, President Diebold previously served as president
of the University of Alaska Statewide System. His principal
fields of professional interest include higher education
management, governance and planning, budget development
and fiscal control, legislative liaison, and personnel manage
ment/collective bargaining.
President Diebold strives for perfection and innovation in
higher education. In so doing, and under his direction, this
University can pride itself on outstanding programming, such
as the Disabled Students Program which is one of the largest in
the eastern part of the United States. The newest effort in

President Diebold currently serves as chairman of the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Board of Directors
and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges
and Universities Committee on State Relations and Committee
on Governance; the State System of Higher Education (SSHE)
Commission of University Presidents’ Business and Finance
Committee, Human Resource Management Comrhittee, and
Educational Policy Committee; and the Board of Governors
Long-Range Planning Committee. He is also a charter member
of the World Future Society and a member of the SSHE search
committee for a vice chancellor for finance and administration.
Active in the community. President Diebold serves on the
Board of Corporators for Hamot Medical Center and the St.
Vincent Foundation for Health and Human Services. He is a
member of the Marine Bank Advisory Board, the Pittsburgh
Plate Glass Corporation Scholarship Review Committee, and
serves as guest speaker at numerous civic and educational
organizations throughout the year.
The President and his wife, Patricia, have two daughters—
ten-year-old Jessica and four-year-old Stacey.

After 125 years of service to the tri-state area, Edinboro
experienced its most significant change in history on July 1, 1983,
when the College became Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Founded as a private academy in 1857, Edinboro University has
continued its surge to the forefront as one of the leading educational
institutions in western Pennsylvania. Situated on a sprawling 585-acre
campus in the scenic resort community of Edinboro, the University is
within 100 miles of the educational and cultural centers of Buffalo,
Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. It is just 15 miles south of Erie, the third
largest city in Pennsylvania, and easily accessible from all directions
by interstates 79, 80 and 90.
Edinboro has the distinction of being the second normal school
established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in the United States. It has
grown to more than forty buildings including the 350,000-volume
Baron-Forness Library, a modern seven-story structure which serves
as a focal point for the spacious campus. Nearly 6,100 students repre
senting almost every county in the Commonwealth, as well as
numerous states and foreign countries attend Edinboro. Its tradition
of educational service and research is matched by a distinguished
faculty, more than two-thirds of whom have earned doctoral degrees.
The University now offers more than 100 undergraduate,
graduate, and associate degree programs, a diversity unmatched by
any other college or university in northwestern Pennsylvania. While
seeking to meet the educational needs of its region from both a

professional and cultural standpoint, Edinboro now makes contri
butions in the fields of education, government, environmental
improvement, urban and rural problems, crime prevention, and
service to business and industry. Recent program developments
include those in the high-demand areas of allied health, business
administration, communication, computer technology, nursing, and
various pre-professional offerings such as law, dentistry, medicine,
pharmacy and veterinary science. Numerous student internships
provide additional examples of the University’s efforts to create a
close working relationship with the people it serves while, at the same
time, offering students intellectual and career opportunities.
Edinboro has initiated the University Honors Program to
provide challenging and enriched learning experiences for academ
ically gifted students. Undergraduate students are encouraged to
strive for academic excellence both in their major fields and in other
disciplines. Honors students pursue studies that are greater in depth
and scope than those required of other undergraduates.
Although the costs for attending Edinboro rank among the
lowest in the Commonwealth, over $10,000,000 in financial aid is
available annually to eligible students.
Students are admitted to the University in September. January,
or at the beginning of each summer session and are considered for
admission on the basis of their general scholarship, nature of
secondary program, and SAT or ACT scores.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR — JIM McDONALD
which also was the sight once again of pre-season drills for the
Pitt Panthers football team. Sox Harrison Stadium is the site
of the Cleveland Browns vs. the Buffalo Bills annual rookie
scrimmage, which has been a yearly mid-summer highlight.
The personable athletic director also introduced Edin
boro’s Hall of Fame program which has evolved into an annual
year-ending event to honor present and past athletes.
McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12
years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975)
and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled
an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span,
his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Con
ference crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18
titles that netted trips to the NAIA National Tournarn^nt. His
teams set 27 University records and made 19 ppst-season
appearances while four of his players were named AllAmericans.
/
Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald
served as assistant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956
graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of
Bridgeport, West Virginia.
In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical
education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also
holds a master’s degree in health from the University of
Buffalo.
As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at
Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball
All-American. In 1960, he was the second leading scorer in the
United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led
his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City,
M issouri. He was named to the NAIA’s All-Tournament Team
in 1959 and 1960.
In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the
Year by the eastern seaboard coafches and that same year was
honored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year
national poll. McDonald’s honors also include selection to the
West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member
ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He served four
years on the NAIA’s All-American selection committee and
was chosen by the NAIA to coach an All-American team of
NBA-bound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel’s Hapoel
Games.
In addition to his classroom and basketball coaching
duties, McDonald was Edinboro’s golf coach for 17 years
during which his teams won over 40 tournaments and finished
as high as 3rd place at the NCAA Division II National
Tournament.
As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of
extensive community involvement. He was Little League
Baseball Director for four years and also held a four-year post
as a member of the General McLane School Board. He and his
wife, Mary Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike, and Matthew.

Athletic Director - Jim McDonald
Edinboro University’s athletic program was placed under
the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in
July of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a
sound scholarship foundation has become his top priority
while numerous changes and innovations have also keyed the
Scots’ athletic program under his direction.
Through his efforts more than 1.5 million dollars has been
raised during the past four years. The funds generated by the
energetic athletic director’s efforts will be used to assist
Edinboro’s men and women athletes who compete in the Scots
sixteen intercollegiate sports.

“EUP has outstanding coaches
and facilities. With these ingredients,
there is no reason we could not be
competitive in the PSAC and Division
II.”
In addition to maintaining Edinboro’s respected winning
tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the former health and
physical education professor has vastly expanded the Univer
sity’s summer activities.
Forty-four camps were sponsored by the Fighting Scots
Booster Club this past summer on the University’s campus

MEET THE SCOTS...

STEVE SZABO — DIRECTION FOR THE FUTURE

SCOTS TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS

“I’m here to win. And we’re going
to win. But not at the expense of losing
the respect of the players and other
people involved in the program. I hope
to create success in an atmosphere
where people are trying to help you.”
In addition to his three years at Ohio State, Szabo spent
1977 and 1978 as a defensive line coach at Iowa Stete. From
1974 through 1976 he was a defensive line coach,at Syracuse
University and the three previous seasons, he fcoached the
offensive line, defensive line and linebackers respectively at the
University of Iowa. He was also an assistant at the University of
Toledo and John Hopkins University. For the past three years,
Szabo has been offensive coordinator at Western Michigan
University, as well as coaching the quarterbacks and wide
receivers.
As a player Szabo was an offensive and defensive halfback
at the Naval Academy. He also earned All-America honors in
lacrosse and was named to the All-Time Middie team.
Following graduation from the Academy, Szabo served a 13month tour of duty in Vietnam and was named to the AllService football team with the Quantico Marines.

Head Coach Steve Szabo

Szabo, who describes himself as a “very goal oriented
person,” has set some goals for the futpre of Edinboro football.
First, he said he wants to produce ^'Winning team starting with
the PS AC title, with long range hdpes of a national champion
ship at the Division II level. Second, Szabo hopes to establish a
program which is meaningful to his players, and ensure that
above all they get an education. Third, Szabo hopes to create a
positive football atmosphere at Edinboro which will involve
the faculty, student body and the community. Finally, Szabo
said he would like to instill an attitude of pride and
togetherness within the team unit stressing, “A team program
will transcend any individual greatness.”

Edinboro University appointed the tenth coach in its 55year football history this spring with the announcement that
Steve Szabo had been named the new Fighting Scot head
football coach.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Szabo graduated with
honors from the United States Naval Academy in 1965 with a
B.S. degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and
electrical engineering. In addition, Szabo completed graduate
work in aerospace engineering and has also pursued doctoral
work on a fellowship at John Hopkins University.
From 1979 to 1981, the Scot head coach served as a
defensive line coach at Ohio State under Earl Bruce, during
which time the Buckeyes ranked in the top 20 and played in
bowl games all three years. In 1979, he directed a standout
defensive unit that ranked third in the nation in total defense.

“Steve brings 16 years of experience to our program,”
commented Edinboro Athletic Director Jim McDonald. “We
feel we have selected a very capable person who will continue
the successful direction in which our program has been
headed.”

“Steve is very disciplined, hard working and responsible,”
offered Buckeye coach Earl Bruce. “I wouldn’t hesitate to
rehire him on my staff,” added the Ohio State mentor.

The new Scot coach has two children, Christine and
Michael. Szabo now resides in Edinboro with his wife, Patti.

6

Edinboro University has compiled an impressive 25-5
mark over the past three years but the traditionally tough
Scots, who return 32 lettermen and 11 starters, face 2 major
changes in 1985. The most significant is the addition of a new
head coach in Steve Szabo. The second major change is filling
the void caused by the graduation loss of record-shattering
quarterback, Blair Hrovat.
“We’re going to go through a transition period, as it
inevitably happens in situations such as this,” stated new head
mentor, Szabo. “But we will still remain basically a Wing-T
football team on offense and a Multiple 3-4 formation team on
defense.”
Even though the formations employed by the Boro eleven
will remain fundamentally the same, Szabo revealed his plans
of adjustment within those systems. “Offensively, we will throw
the ball more. Defensively we intend to use more coverages and
apply more pressure on the opponent’s offense. By more
pressure, I mean an attacking style of defense that will make the
other team’s offense play defensively.”
Szabo’s designs for the Fighting Scots to travel the flight
paths more often this fall rest squarely on the shoulders of Scott

Dodds (Beaver, PA). The 6-0, 178-pound senior quarterback,
who elected to be red shirted in 1983, gets his opportunity this
fall to step out of Hrovat’s shadow and begin making his own
marks at the very important position. Dodds hinted last season
that he is capable of handling the duties as he completed 10 of
23 passes for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns in limited playing
time. “Quarterback is a very pivotal position for the success of
this team,” said Szabo. “If Scott can have a good year, then we
should fly.” Listed as the understudy in the quarterback rank is
senior Dan Conwell (6-1, 175, McMurray, PA).
Given the responsibility of protecting either Dodds or
Conwell is an enormous, veteran line which is undeniably the
strong point of the Boro offense. Spearheaded by four seniors
including guard Dom Grande (6-0,250, Pittsburgh, PA), tackle
Mark Wallace (6-4, 255, Uniontown, PA), center Dave
Higham (6-2, 240, Hubbard, OH), tackle Jim Britt (6-4, 260,
Girard, OH) and junior guard Scott Weinhold (6-4, 255,
Pittsburgh, PA), the new Scot head mentor likes the looks of
the offensive front. “Tackle to tackle, I see no weaknesses
because they are big and they play so well as a group,” beamed
Szabo. Pushing for game time are junior tackles Scott Frary

(6-3,250, Spotsylvania, VA), Andy Cline (6-4,245, Pittsburgh,

and Larry Rosenthal (6-1, 223, Manassas, VA). Senior Mark
Merrit (5-11, 250, Industry, PA), a part-time starter last year,
will again be hustling for more playing time at center.
In addition to keeping opponents away from the quarter
back, the Edinboro front wall must keep the pathways clear
again for the Scot backs. Last year, Boro runners churned out
244.1 yards per game, the country’s sixth best rushing mark
among NCAA II schools. With the departure of starters Ray
Rhodes, Damon Chambers and Bob Klenk, Szabo must find
replacements for all three this season.
“We have a number of good backs to work with, so finding
replacements should be no real problem,” claimed the
Edinboro coach. “I was particularly impressed with Floyd
Faulkner. I understand Slippery Rock has a good back in
Chuck Sanders. But from what I’ve seen, Floyd has the
potential to be as good as any top back in the conference.” Last
season the 5-9, 180-pound freshman flash from Coraopolis,
Pennsylvania, bolted for just 87 yards on 18 attempts, but he
showed signs of brilliance in each outing, especially so versus
West Virginia Wesleyan when he carried 4 times for 50 yards
and a pair of touchdowns.
Getting the early nod to join Faulkner in the starting
backfield are seniors Jim Pisano (6-0, 210, Lower Burrell, PA)

at fullback and Ross Rankin (5-11, 185, Canton, OH) at right
halfback. Juniors Carmen Cicero (5-9, 180, Niles, OH), John
Georgiana (5-10, 195, Altoona, PA) and Dave Span (5-10, 180,
Orlando, FL) are the top backups to the early starting trio.
Span appears to be the choice reserve here as he gained 319
yards on just 29 carries last year.
If Szabo wants to pass more this season, then the receiving
corps will be a vital link to its success. Edinboro is very sound at
tight end where Bob Suren (6-4,205, Parma, OH), a junior, and
senior Phil Lorch (6-1, 220, New Hyde Park, NY) platooned
last fall and caught passes for 150 and 124 yards respectively.
“We have good players in Suren and Lorch. We have no
problems there; they will get the job done,” assured Szabo.
“However, at wide receiver it still remains to be seen just who
will step in there and do the job that needs to be done. That
position is a big question mark.’’Senior Dave Gierlak (5-8, 150,
Buffalo, NY), a redshirt last season, has been given the initial
starting spot with converted defensive back Mark Perkins
(5-10, 180, Havre de Grace, MD), a senior, as the backup.
Should the Plaid be stopped short of the goal line,
Edinboro will have third team All-American placekicker Jim
Trueman waiting in the wings for a shot at the uprights. The
5-8, 180-pound booting ace from Bellevue, Pennsylvania,
8

ranked sixth among all Division II point-getters with a 7.5
points per game average. He has already broken or tied 5 Scot
kicking records including most extra points in a season (42),
most consecutive extra points (41), most extra points in a
career (81), most extra points in a game (7), and most field goals
in a game (3). Szabo is delighted with the junior kicking star.
“Jim is really a quality placekicker who has already proven he is
more than capable. With some teams, a field goal attempt is an
adventure. With Jim, they are almost guaranteed. He will
definately win some games for us.”
When the Boro offense is stalled beyond Trueman’s range,
punters Tom King (6-2, 190, Huntington, NY) and Doug
Eberle (6-4, 185, Slippery Rock, PA) will be called upon to get
the Scots out of trouble.
Szabo’s ideas for an unrelenting, attacking style of defense
begin with Edinboro’s primary defensive strong point, the
secondary, lead by senior free safety Ray Bracy (6-0, 180,
Youngstown, OH). Bracy, an AP All-American Honorable
Mention selectee last year, was in on 36 tackles and snared 6
errant throws to help him rate second on the Scots’ defensive
point chart last fall. “Ray is a proven player of excellent quality
in a key position,” stated the first-year Edinboro coach. “He’ll
be calling all the coverages and checks for us out on the field.”
9

1985 PRE-SEASON DEPTH CHARTS

PC TRADITIONALLY TOUGH
Joining Bracy in the defensive backfield are returning starters
Martelle Betters (6-0, 180, Connellsville, PA), Don Davis (6-1,
190, Pittsburgh, PA) and Terrell Clifford (5-11, 175, Canton,
OH). Junior Betters picked off seven passes from his strong
cornerback slot in 1984 to rate fourth among NCAA II players
in that category. Davis, a senior at strong safety, and Clifford, a
junior performer at quick cornerback, are both proven players.
“Undoubtedly,” said Szabo, “this is the strength of our
defense.”
Roaming the middle of Edinboro’s 3-4 defensive align
ment are a pair of linebackers in new starting roles. Junior Stan
Tomajko (6-1, 210, New Stanton, PA), an aggressive player
who made 45 hits while filling in for injured starter Willie
Chealey last year, will hold down the left linebacker duties.
Marvin Winn (5-11, 200, Canton, OH), just a sophomore, has
nailed the right linebacking slot. Behind them are senior Allen
Ellis (6-0, 202, Albion, NY), junior Abdul Hakim (5-10, 208,
Erie, PA) and sophomore Kevin Akromas (6-1, 200, West
Seneca, NY). “Because of our style of defense, the linebackers
will make a lot of tackles,” predicted Szabo.
Senior ends Dave Emmert (6-3, 215, Lower Burrell, PA)
and John Brenneman (6-0,230, Warren, OH) anchor a veteran
defensive line. Emmert and Brenneman were 1-2 atop the
Scots’ tackle leaders last fall with 60 and 59 stops respectively.
Brenneman also was the top sack-getter with seven. Senior
Sean Henderson (6-0, 230, West Mifflin, PA), the team’s
middle guard last year who claimed 48 tackles in ‘84, will slide
over to the right tackle slot this year to make room for fellow
classmate Matt Grebenc (5-7, 185, Wickliffe, OH). Szabo likes
the scrappy Grebenc, who collected 18 tackles and 5 quarter
back sacks last season in very limited playing time. “Matt is a
tenacious player who possesses excellent quickness. He is the
emotional, highly intensive person we need to get the defense
fired up.” Left tackle Chuck Murray (6-4, 255, Tyrone, PA) is
the only junior starting on the Boro’s first line of defense.
Biding time for their chance to play are backups John Cardone
(5-11, 215, Pittsburgh, PA), Tom Nolan (6-4, 205, Buffalo,
NY), Robert Lewis (6-3, 245, Rochester, NY), Jay McDonald
(6-1,260, BelAir, MD), and Brad Bowers (6-1,225, Kittanning,
PA).
Edinboro will tune up for rugged Pennsylvania Con

advanced from linebacker coach in 1982 to be the defensive
coordinator the next two seasons. Todd is currently writing his thesis
to complete a masters degree in health education.

BLAIR HROVAT - Running Backs
Taking over the duties of keeping the Scots’ running game as one
of the best in the nation is former record-setting quarterback, Blair
Hrovat. The Northfield, Ohio, native earned letters in tennis, baseball
and football at Nordonia High School before coming to Edinboro in
1981. As a freshman, Blair started the final three games and sparked
the Scots to three wins. During 34 starts as the Boro field general, he
orchestrated an impressive 28-6 record while setting 16 school passing
marks, including a Pennsylvania Conference standard of 49 touch
down passes. Prior to graduation with a degree in accounting in 1984,
Blair was bestowed with the University’s Sox Harrison Award as the
Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Tabbed as a graduate assistant with
the Scots this season, he is now pursuing a master of science degree in
social science.

PETE YAKSICK - Offensive Line
Tutoring the offensive line as a graduate assistant is former
Edinboro University offensive tackle, Pete Yaksick. Prior to
attending Edinboro in the fall of 1981, the Finleyville, Pennsylvania
native played both offensive and defensive tackle for Thomas
Jefferson High School where he was a part of the Jaguars’ 1980
WPIAL AAA championship team. Pete earned a degree in political
science from Edinboro and is currently furthering his education in the
University’s political science/public administration graduate pro
gram.

RON RANKIN - Outside Linebackers

EDINBORO UNIVERSITY’S 1985 FOOTBALL COACH STAFF: (Kneeling L-R), Ron Rankin-Outside Linebackers, Rick Kaczmarek-secondary,
Gerry Gallagher-Offensive Coordinator, Blair Hrovat-Running Backs, and Todd Henricks-Defensive Line. (Standing L-R), Jim Durkin-Student Coach,
Tom Herman, Defensive Coordinator, Steve Szabo-Head Football Coach, Bob ORorke-Student Coach, and Pete Yaksick-Assistant Offensive Line.
which were spent as the head coach at Morris Catholic High School in
Denville, New Jersey. A native of Rockaway, New Jersey, he earned
his B.S. degree from William Patterson College. The Morris Catholic
graduate was a running back at William Patterson, where he was
honored as the team’s most dedicated player. Gallagher and his wife,
Pat, reside in Edinboro with their two children, Amy (7) and Bryan
(3).

TOM HERMAN - Defensive Coordinator
Tom Herman begins his eleventh year on the Scots’ staff where
his efforts have continually distinguished his alma mater’s grid
program. Since his appointment as defensive coordinator in 1979,
Edinboro has ranked first in total defense during three of the past five
seasons in the Pennsylvania Conference. His traditionally stingy defen
sive units have also rated among the national leaders during that span
highlighted by 1983’s eighth-place finish after allowing a mere 65.6
yards per game, the second best mark in Edinboro University history.
In his first year with the Scots, he tutored the defensive line and
followed with a three-year stint as offensive coordinator before
returning to the defensive side of the ledger. A standout gridder at
Ellwood City’s Lincoln High School, Tom continued his football
career as both a center and defensive end at Edinboro. Following
graduation in 1972, he was an assistant coach at Cambridge Springs
(PA) High School until joining the Marshall University grid staff in
1974. After receiving his master’s degree from Marshall, Tom
returned to Edinboro in 1975 where he now resides with his wife,
Kathy.

JIM BOWEN - Scouting

*

/

Bringing a broad background of offensive and defensive
coaching experience to the Scot camp is veteran mentor Jim Bowen.
Bowen, who is entering his sixteenth season at Edinboro, will also be
celebrating his twenty-sixth year in coaching. After graduating from
Slippery Rock University in 1957, Bowen amassed an amazing 71-8-1
record in his first nine years as head coach at Fairview High School.
Bowen then continued his record-setting performances at the Boro
where in the early seventies he guided the Scots’ offensive units to
outstanding finishes at both the state and national levels. Success
followed him coaching on the defensive side of the football where he
groomed both linebackers and secondary stalwarts who continued to
revise Edinboro records. Bowen has helped shape the collegiate
careers of such Fighting Scot standouts as linebackers Jim Krentz and
Greg Sullivan, the top two tacklers in Edinboro history. In addition,
he has tutored such Boro greats as Jim Romaniszyn, Dave Green, Joe
Sanford, Bob Mengerink, A1 Raines, Howard Hackley and Bob Jahn.
The knowledgeable Scot mentor, who earned his master’s degreeTrom
Buffalo University, resides in Girard.

GERRY GALLAGHER - Offensive Coordinator
Gerry Gallagher enters his second year in the Scot camp after a
highly successful debut season in 1984 as the team’s offensive
coordinator. Edinboro’s powerful Wing-T formation enabled the
Scots to rate third among the NCAA leaders last year by scoring 35.3
points per game. Gallagher’s offensive unit also placed sixth among
the national leaders in both rushing and total offense. The Boro
mentor coached at the high school level for eleven years, seven of

Returning to the Edinboro grid program as the outside line
backer coach is former Scot running back Ron Rankin. A graduate of
McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, Ron garnered three letters
from his offensive end slot prior to traveling to Edinboro where he
earned three letters as a running back in the Scots’ Wing-T formation.
Last fall, the Canton native helped tutor the running backs as a
student coach. Upon graduation that semester with a degree in social
studies/education, Ron became a graduate assistant with the team in
the spring of 1985. He is currently pursuing a degree in secondary
school administration.
RICK KACZMAREK - Secondary
Presenting new direction for the Scots’ highly talented and
experienced defensive secondary is Detroit, Michigan, native Rick
Kaczmarek. Prior to his graduation from Michigan State in 1981,
Rick was the offensive and defensive line coach for the state runnerup
Okemos High School in 1980 and the offensive line and defensive back
coach at Lansing Catholic Central in 1981 while pursuing a B.A.
degree in engineering. The new Scot mentor continued coaching at the
high school level the following year at Royal Oak Shrine before
breaking into college ball as the defensive backfield coach for
Michigan State during the 1983-84 seasons. In addition to his new
gridiron duties, Rick is currently working on a master of business
administration degree.
TODD HENRICKS - Defensive Line
Listed as the new coach for the defensive line is Cerro Gordo,
Illinois’ Todd Henricks. After graduation from Cerro Gordo High
School, Todd played noseguard at junior college, the College of
DuPage, before transferring to Southern Illinois University where he
graduated in 1979 with a degree in physical education. While an
undergraduate, Todd coached the defensive line in 1977-78 for
Marion High School and was the defensive coach at Marshall High
School the following year. During the 1980-81 seasons, the new Boro
guide was a graduate assistant coaching defensive ends at Southern
Illinois prior to a three-year stint at Muskingum College where he

TARTARS OUTLOOK

September 25, 1973 at Edinboro

Coach David Farris

Coach David Farris and his staff have completely upgraded the
Wayne State football program in just four years as last season’s 6-5
overall mark gave the Tartars their first back-to-back winning seasons
since 1977-78. By incorporating 13 freshmen and'22 sophomores
among the regulars last year, the Tartars return 40 youthful yet
experienced lettermen for the 1985 campaign. The Tartars bring back
starters in all skill positions, including All-GLIAC performers
quarterback Rich Popp, who set or tied six WSU passing records last
year as a sophomore; wide receiver Tom Badalamenti; and running
back Arnold Thompson. On the defensive ledger, the Tartars have lost
just two players from a squad which finished tenth in the NCAA 11
rushing defense ranking last season by allowing just 88.6.yards per
game. Here Wayne State is led by linebacker John Bjiitcher, the
school’s all-time leading tackier, and nose guard John Taylor.

BLUE DEVILS OUTLOOK
Over the last three seasons, the Central Connecticut football
program has made steady improvement under the direction of Coach
Buddy Amendola and concluded the 1984 campaign with a 6-4 record
and the head mentor feels his club with 41 returning lettermen is ready
to accept the school’s most challenging schedule ever. Back for the
Blue Devils on offense are eight starters including Bill Von Klock, who
set four school passing marks last fall, tailbacks Peter Grava (660
yards-7 touchdowns), and Tim Minor (277-2) along with wide
receivers Frank Skoronski who grabbed 45 aerials for 594 yards.
Senior placekicker Mike O’Sullivan can be called upon to score when
the offense slows. He booted a school record 49 yarder last season.
Defensively, the Blue Devils were hardest hit by graduation as they
lost five starters from a squad which allowed just 12.3 points per
game-lOth ranked in the nation. Kodak All-American linebacker Sal
Cintorino returns for his senior year.

VULCANS OUTLOOK
The Vulcans of California University are returning 14 starters
from a team which captured the 1984 Pennsylvania Conference
Championship. Head Coach Jeff Petrucci feels the team has the talent
to repeat as conference champs if they can find a replacement for
quarterback Kevin Russell, the 1984 Pennsylvania Conference Player
of the Year. Russell completed a record 234 passes last season to
spearhead the Firegods’offense. Defense should be the Vulcans most
potent weapon this season. The linebacking corps is led by senior
Frank Vulcano, a two-time, first-team ^^1-division selectee, and senior
Rick Ley. The defensive backfield is* another asset of the Vulcans.
There, the group is led by all-district selectee Art Motten, and senior
captain Duke Zack. Offensively, the Vulcans will look to the sure
hands of senior tight end Gary Bero, twice a second team all-division
pick, and senior wide receiver Dave Lease.

ROCKETS OUTLOOK
With 14 starters returning from a Rocket team which posted a 6-4
record, Coach Don Ault is confident that his Green and White will
have another successful season. The Rock’s offense returns nine
starters including second-team All-America and conference rushing
leader Chuck Sanders. As a tailback Sanders ran for 1,280 yards in
1984, 1,157 coming in the last seven games of the season. Other
offensive standouts include slotback Wade Acker, who is one of the
Rock’s all-time leading receivers. “We’ll have a very sound offense
because all of our starters return except at center and wide receiver,”
said Ault, “We’re going to depend on ball control and try to wear
down our opponents,” continued the Rocket mentor. Defensively
Slippery Rock has six starting vacancies to fill. Top returnees here are
tackle Ed Robinson, linebacker Dave Linton, end Terry Wallace and
free safety Todd Durand.

BIG INDIANS OUTLOOK
If quarterback Rich Ingold returns to pre-injury form, and the
Big Indians can replace All-American receivers Gregg Brenner and
Bill Thompson, lUP believes they can improve on last year’s 7-3
record with the strength of 40 returning J^ettermen. Ingold suffered a
severe spleen injury midway through the season as he was leading the
nation in passing efficiency (157.1). Sophomore Bob Kiel then stepped
in and tossed for 1036 yards and 12 touchdowns. With the loss of
Brenner and Thompson, more responsibility may be placed on
fullback Dave Seidel (727 yards) and tailback James Calhoun (570).
On the opposite side of the line, four starting linebackers return
including Bob Buiak (160 tackles) and Kevin Cottrell (76). Strong
safety Matt Matis (109) and cornerback Kevin McCorkle (76) offer
solid experience in the secondary.

WARRIOR OUTLOOK
East Stroudsburg University, the nation’s fourth ranked NCAA
Division II passing team last season, will have its two wide receivers,
Tim Bishop and Joe Rovnan, back this season but must replace first
team All-America quarterback Andy Baranek. Tim Bishop caught 52
passes for 810 yards and 9 touchdowns as he was named to the
All-PS AC first team. Joe Rovnan hauled in 40 passes for 713 yards
and 6 TD’s. Two year reserve Charlie Diskin will be looked upon to
replace standout QP Andy Baranek. Baranek was a three-year starter
who passed for 2,295 yards last season. For the Warriors to improve
upon their 5-5 mark last season, the team’s defense will have to
improve. Coach Denny Douds thinks it will improve considering nine
starters are returning, including the entire secondary and linebacker
corps. Linebacker Dan Murray is the warrior to watch on defense.
Along with Murray, look out for defensive halfbacks Tracy Coleman
and Chris Gerhard, both All-PSAC second-team selections.

GOLDEN EAGLE OUTLOOK
Clarion is hoping senior quarterback Pat Carbol and wide
receiver Bob Green will light up the skies again this season offensively
for the Golden Eagles. Carbol completed, 101 passes for 1,740 yards
and 13 touchdowns last year and most often on the receiving end was
Green who caught 44 of those tosses*ifor 1,018 yards and 7 touch
downs. With the return of wide receiver Terry McFetridge, an AllAmerican pick two years ago. Coach Gene Sobolewski’s squad can be
expected to have a dangerous air attack. A sturdy defensive line is
formed around a pair of seniors in noseguard John Hughes and tackle
Bob Jarosinski, who totaled 101 and 96 tackles respectively.
Providing more punch in the defense is senior back Jerry Haslett who
made 120 tackles last fall.

BALD EAGLE OUTLOOK
Coach Jack Fisher expects improved play from 34 returning
lettermen to lift the Bald Eagles up from last year’s 1-9 mark.
Offensively, Lock Haven has young but experienced players at the
skill positions in quarterback Pat Cahill, running backs Eric Speece
and Rick Lawrence, all of who are sophomores, in addition to junior
fullback Roosevelt Brown. A huge veteran line returns five starters led
by tackles Todd Johnson (265 pounds) and John Eisenhooth (275)
with guard Chris Jackson (235). On the defensive ledger. Lock Haven
claims linebackers Bill Peterson and Stan Allen “are one of the
league’s best tandems,” and backs Jeff Swanson and Nick Biscontini
are returning starters. Tackle Dave Shriver and end Todd Ritter are
strong veterans, but the Bald Eagles need to find depth for the line.

RED RAIDER OUTLOOK
Shippensburg hopes the senior offensive duo of quarterback Dan
Carey and tailback Tom Miller will provide enough scoring punch to
propel Vito Ragazzo’s team over the five-hundred barrier in 1985.
Carey connected on 63 of 117 passp? for 636 yards and five
touchdowns in six games played last f/tll. A top target for Carey this
season could be fellow senior captain, wideout Mike Brady. In the
rushing department. Miller returns to lead that charge where he
ground out 601 yards in ‘84. The big worry in the Raiders’ camp is
whether or not the defensive line, which gave up 166.5 yards per game
last year, can shore up its ranks for 1985. Senior defensive end Dave
Hurdle, a second-year captain, should take the lead here.

FALCON OUTLOOK
Second year coach Wally Hood had the luxury of recordbreaking senior quarterback Larry Farrell to guide the Falcon forces
on the field in 1984 and his main concern for the 1985 season is to find
a suitable replacement for the position. Whoever wins the starting nod
will be expected to get the ball to All-West Virginia Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference performer Ed Coleman. The senior wide receiver
snared 60 passes for 934 yards and seven touchdowns last year.
Another good connection for the air game is senior tight end Joe
Haas, who caught 17 passes for 215 yards and one touchdown in 1984.
On the ground, the senior duo of Demtrius Rush (885 yards-14
touchdowns) and Brian Brown (792-10) look strong. Also appearing
to be in sturdy shape is an experienced defense which returns nine
starters. Tops here are tackle Charlie Hall, end Calvin Washington
and back Marty Guzzetta.

Prior to the 1926 season, Edinboro was a state normal school and
did not play a complete intercollegiate schedule. Therefore, any
records prior to that season should not be considered as part of the
intercollegiate football history of Edinboro University.

1984 IN REVIEW
Behind the record shattering performances of quarterback
Blair Hrovat, Edinboro University blazed to its third con
secutive outstanding grid season as Coach Denny Creehan’s
chargers posted a glittering 8-2 mark, shared first place honors
in the Pennsylvania Conference’s powerful Western Division
and finished with the best NCAA II record in the East while
ranking as one of the top offensive teams in the nation. Over the
past three campaigns, the Scots have rallied to impressive 9-2,
8-2, and 8-2 charts while either breaking or tying an
unprecedented 54 Edinboro grid records.
Hrovat directed the scots to a 28-6 ledger during 34
straight starts over the past four seasons and shattered all but
one Edinboro University passing mark enroute to revising 16
Edinboro football records. The Northfield, Ohio, product
sparkplugged an offense ranked as the nation’s third best in
scoring (35.3 points per game) and also rated third on the Scots’
all-time total offense list behind a 411.7 yards per game output.
Hrovat hit 97 of 199 attempts during the 1984 campaign
for 1,517 yards and 14 touchdowns. His senior finale extended
his record totals to 5,103 passing yards, 49 touchdown tosses (a
Pennsylvania Conference mark), and a 6,070 yard total offense
figure.
Wide receiver Eric Bosley and halfback Bob Klenk, a pair
of seniors, were Hrovat’s top targets as each grabbed 23 passes.
Bosley was the deep threat with a team leading 489 yards and
six TD receptions with Klenk totaling 225 yards coming out of
his halfback slot. Bosley was doubly effective on special teams
as he set new Edinboro standards for the most kickoff return
yards in a season (757) and a career (1,247). His 27.0 yar^ls per
return ranked fourth in the nation on 1984’s final NCAA II
stats.
Senior fullback Ray Rhodes spearheaded an Edinboro
ground game that churned out 244.1 yards per game, the
country’s sixth best rushing mark among NCAA II schools.
Rhodes netted a team leading 619 yards to produce a highly
respectable 5.4 yards per carry. Fleet-footed sophomore Dave
Span improved with each outing and finished tops among the
returnees with 319 yards that yielded a remarkable 11.0 yards
per trip. His 67-yard TD jaunt against Indiana was the longest
scoring run of the year by an Edinboro back.
Still to be reckoned with in the record revising department
was sophomore place kicker Jim Trueman who set three school
marks. Listed among his new standards were extra points in a
season - 42, most extra points in a career -81, and most extra
points in a game - 8. Combined with his eleven field goals,
Trueman far outdistanced all Scot scorers with 75 points and a
7.5 points-per-game average placing him sixth in the national
scoring list.
Not to be overshadowed was a Fighting Scot defense
which was continually forced to fight off nagging injuries, but
still proved stingy to the opposition. Headlining the group were

top tackling defensive ends John Brenneman and Dave
Emmert who posted respective 60 and 59 team leading stops
followed closely by linebacker Bob O’Rorke with 58. Despite
missing four of ten games, linebacker Willie Chealey ranked
fourth on the hit chart with 53 tackles while middle guard Sean
Henderson rounded out the top five with 48.
Forced to face some of the finest NCAA II quarterbacks in
the nation, Edinboro’s secondary improved with each testing
and finished the year with 22 interceptions, the second highest
total in Edinboro’s grid history. Cornerback Martelle Betters
picked off seven enemy tosses to rank fourth in the country
while teammate Ray Bracy, an NCAA All-American Honor
able Mention winner, was just one off the pace with six aerial
thefts. The entire secondary will return intact with hard
tackling Terrell Clifford (41) and Matt Robinson (34) joining
Bracy and Betters once again.
The Fighting Scots return a nucleus of talented veterans,
some outstanding junior college hopefuls who will offset some
immediate needs and a crop of promising frosh recruits to face
one of the most challenging schedules the Scots have played
since 1970.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference is one of the few
leagues in the nation to sponsor a championship game in football. The
East vs. West conference championship game, known as the “State
Game,” has been in existence since 1960. Mythical champions were
picked by sportswriters from 1934 until 1950 with the champion
determined by the Saylor system from 1951 until 1959.
All members of the conference (with individual sports excep
tions) compete at the NCAA Division II level and have since 1980.
Athletes and teams have won numerous honors in national competi
tions over the years and have helped the PSAC become one of the
most respected “small college” conferences in the nation.
A list of member schools with their football affiliation includes:
Eastern Division — Bloomsburg University, Cheyney University,
East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown University, Mansfield Uni
versity, Millersville University, West Chester University; Western
Division — California University, Clarion University, Edinboro Uni
versity, Indiana University, Lock Haven University, Shippensburg
University, Slippery Rock University.
