GUIDE

QUALITY LEADERSHIP GUIDES THE UNIVERSITY
favorite projects is the University Honors Program,
which draws upon the contributions of university
staff for its scholarship funds, and which recognizes
the academic distinction of excellent students by
offering specialized interdisciplinary coursework and
advanced research work.
President Diebold's principal fields of profes
sional interest include higher education manage
ment, governance, and planning; budget develop
ment and fiscal control; legislative liaison; and
personnel management/collective bargaining. While
at Rutgers University in 1963, he received a Wall
Street Journal fellowship.
A native of Orange, New Jersey, he served as
President of the University of Alaska from 19771979. Prior to that, he was executive secretary to the
Board of Regents and Special Assistant to the
President of the University of Alaska's statewide
system. From 1969 to 1976, he was director of the
Division of College Development at Kean College,
New Jersey (formerly Newark State College), and
from 1965 to 1969, he was Assistant Superintendent
of Neptune Township Public Schools in New Jersey.

Edinboro President - Foster F. Diebold

In just four short years since his appointment in
1979 as Edinboro's 14th president, Foster F. Diebold
has directed the University to its most significant
change in the institution's 125-year history - uni
versity status. Under Diebold's leadership Edinboro
has undergone dramatic internal and external altera
tions to provide northwestern Pennsylvanians with a
dynamic, multi-faceted educational force.
Noted for his extensive experience in the field of
education management. President Diebold had pre
viously served as President of the University of
Alaska statewide system.
His innovative efforts at Edinboro have taken
many shapes. Most recently, he initiated a total
reorganization of the University's various academic
schools and administrative offices with a watchful
eye upon fiscal responsibility and increased institu
tional responsiveness. In keeping with his policy of
making maximum use of existing campus resources
in higher education, he has imaginatively met the
ever-changing needs brought about by new and
emerging student interests and societal expecta
tions.
UniqCre cooperative programs with area business
and industry are also the result of President Diebold's
revitalization of Edinboro University. Among his

President Diebold's community service includes
membership on the Board of Corporators, Hamot
Medical Center in Erie, and on Marine Bank's Local
Advisory Board. Recently he was a panel participant
at the First Global Conference on the Future in
Toronto. He also serves as a member of the William J.
McMannis and A. Haskell McMannis Educational
Trust Fund Advisory Board, and Chairman of the
Government, Education, and Social Agencies Divi
sion of the Erie County United Way Campaign.
Edinboro's president holds an associate degree
in psychology from Monmouth Community College,
West Long Branch, New Jersey; a bachelor of science
degree in education from Monmouth College; a
master of arts In educational administration from
Seton Hall University; and he has met course
requirements for his doctorate in education at
Rutgers University.
President Diebold currently serves as Chairman
of the Committee on Administration and Finance in
the University System of Pennsylvania and is a
member of the Commission of Presidents Executive
Committee. He holds memberships on the American
Association of State Colleges and Universities Com
mittee on State Relations, and the Government
Relations Committee of the Pennsylvania Associa
tion of Colleges and Universities. He is also a charter
member of the World Future Society.
The President and his wife, Patricia, have two
daughters, seven-year-old Jessica, and two-year-old
Stacey.

EDINBORO...THE BIRTH
OF A UNIVERSITY
N

After 125 years of service to the tri-state area, Edinboro experienced its most significant change in history on
July 1, 1983, when the College became Edinboro Univer
sity of Pennsylvania. Founded as a private academy in
1857, Edinboro University has continued its surge to the
forefront as one of the leading educational institutions in
western Pennsylvania. Situated on a sprawling 585-acre
campus in the scenic resort community of Edinboro, the
University is within 100 miles of the educational and
cultural centers of Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. It is
just 15 miles south of Erie, the third largest city in
Pennsylvania, and easily accessible from all directions by
interstates 79, 80 and 90.
Edinboro has the distinction of being the second
normal school established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in
the United States. It has grown to more than forty buildings
including the 350,000-volume Baron-Forness Library, a
modern seven-story structure which serves as a focal point
for the spacious campus. More than 5,800 students
representing almost every county in the Commonwealth,
as well as numerous states and foreign countries attend
Edinboro. Its tradition of educational service and research
is matched by a distinguished faculty, more than two-thirds
of whom have earned doctoral degrees.
The University now offers more than 100 under
graduate, graduate, and associate degree programs, a
diversity unmatched by any other college or university in
northwestern Pennsylvania. While seeking to meet the

educational needs of its region from both a professional
and cultural standpoint, Edinboro now makes contributions
in the fields of education, government, environmental
improvement, urban and rural problems, crime prevention,
and service to business and industry. Recent program
developments include those in the high-demand areas of
allied health, business administration, communication,
computer technology, nursing, and various pre-profes
sional offerings such as law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy
and veterinary science. Numerous student internships
provide additional examples of the University's efforts to
create a close working relationship with the people it
serves while, at the same time, offering students intel
lectual and career opportunities.
Edinboro has initiated the University Honors Program
to provide challenging and enriched learning experiences
for academically gifted students. Undergraduate students
are encouraged to strive for academic excellence both in
their major fields and in other disciplines. Honors students
pursue studies that are greater in depth and scope than
those required of other undergraduates.
Although the costs for attending Edinboro rank among
the lowest in the Commonwealth, over $8,CKX),000 in
financial aid is available annually to eligible students.
Students are admitted to the University in September,
January, or at the beginning of each summer session and
are considered for admission on the basis of their general
scholarship, nature of secondary program, and SAT or ACT
scores.

MAJOR MOVES MARK MCDONALD MANAGEMENT

Athletic Director - Jim McDonald

Edinboro University's athletic program was
placed under the talented and aggressive leadership
of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis
on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship
foundation has become his top priority while numer
ous changes and innovations have also keyed the
Scots' athletic program under his direction.
Through his efforts, more than $160,OCX) was
raised over the past year while an additional
$250,000 is anticipated during the 1983-84 sports
campaign. The funds derived through McDonald'^s
endeavors will be used to assist Edinboro's men and
women athletes who, with the recent addition of
men's volleyball along with women's cross country
and swimming, now compete in 17 intercollegiate
sports.
In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected
winning tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the
former health and physical education professor has
vastly expanded the University's summer activities.
The summer camp program has grown from five
offerings to include 11 interest areas.
In addition to the annual Buffalo Bills-Cleveland
Browns scrimmage at Sox Harrison Stadium as well
as the pre-season drills of the Pitt Panthers,
Duquesne University and 12 area high schools make
Edinboro their camp home. McDonald has construct
ed 12 new football fields to accommodate these
needs and the Football Camp of Champions that
attracts more than 350 young gridders.
The personable athletic director also staged
Edinboro's first Hall of Fame festivities that featured

the induction of 18 charter members. These past
athletes, coaches and individuals who have promot
ed the cause of Fighting Scot athletics were honored
at a banquet where more than 500 attendees wit
nessed their inductions.
McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and
for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball
coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing
season while his teams compiled an impressive 181
wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his
cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania
Conference crowns, the PC state championship and
two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAIA
National Tournament. His teams set 27 ESC records
and made 19 post-season appearances while four of
his players were named All-Americans.
Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro,
McDonald served as assistant basketball coach in
Erie, Pa. He is a 1965 graduate of Bridgeport High
School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia.
In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and
physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan
College and he also holds a master's degree in health
from the University of Buffalo. He has done doctoral
work in sports science at West Virginia University.
As an undergraduate, he set nine school records
at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPl
basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the second
leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly
over 33 points a game, and led his team to the
national basketball tournament in Kansas City,
Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Tourna
ment Team in 1959 and 1960.
In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight
Coach of the Year by the eastern seaboard coaches
and that same year was honored as one of the top ten
finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll.
McDonald's honors also include selection to the
West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and
membership in the West Virginia Sports Hall of
Fame. He served four years on the NAIA's AllAmerican selection committee and was chosen by
the NAIA to coach an All-American team of NBAbound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel's
Hapoel Games. His all-star coaching assignment
brought additional recognition since Edinboro was
named as the team's official training site.
In addition to his classroom and basketball
coaching duties, McDonald was Edinboro's golf
coach for 17 years during which his teams won over
40 tournaments and finished as high as 3rd place at
the NCAA Division II National Tournament. He was
twice selected District Coach of the Year in golf.
As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a
record of extensive community involvement. He was
Little League Baseball Director for four years and for
the past three years, has been a member of the
General McLane School Board. He and his wife, Mary
Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike, and Matthew.

“WE SHOULD MOVE THE BALL WELL”

leading ground gainer Mitchell Kelly is missing, letter
winners Damon Chambers (Willingboro, NJ), Ron Rankin,
Harold Grains (Beaver, PA) and Bob Klenk (Pittsburgh) give
the Scot backfield tested performers. Still to be reckoned
with is transfer fullback Ray Rhodes (White Plains, NY) and
soph halfback Scott Rittenhouse (Grennsburg, PA), who
both sparkled in the spring.
A very capable Scott Dodds (Beaver), the author of
numerous junior varsity routs as a freshman, is the top
reliever at quarterback. Freshman Mike Surin (Warren, OH)
fills in behind him.
Moving into the front line of action in the offensive
trenches will be tackles Rick Rosenberg (6-4,250, Chesterland, OH) along with guards Dorn Grande (6-0, 250,
Pittsburgh) and Scott Weinhold (6-4, 240, Pittsburgh).
Newcomers Frank Lucca (6-3, 230, Mentor, OH) and
Anthony Piscitelli (6-0,225, Newcastle, PA) likewise loom
as possible guard starters where Creehan fills his offense
will have some depth. Buddy Carroll (6-2, 230, Alexandria,
VA) has been switched to center after being a left side
regular at tackle last fall. Rosenberg was a three-year
starter at defensive tackle and his experience should make
the transition to defense much easier.
When quizzed about summarizing his offensive forces,
Creehan responded, "If the experience factor doesn't hurt
our offensive line, I feel we'll be just as effective as we were
last year."' "
Edinboro's major strength falls on the defensive side of
the ledger where a unit of stubborn Scots return who
limited opponents tojust lOpoints per outing. "I think we'll
see a faster defensive team," claimed the Boro mentor.

"We might be less physical, but noticeably faster."
Forming a formidable front wall are senior ends Bob
Beauregard (6-2, 225, Grand Island, NY) and Phil Giavasis
(6-0, 214, Canton, OH) along with senior middle guard
John O'Rorke (5-10, 220, Pittsburgh) who is sandwiched
by junior tackles Don Espy (6-3, 235, Brookville, PA) and
Rick Jordan (6-2, 225, Jamestown, NY). Not only does this
group provide the Scots with what Creehan terms "the best
pass rush since I've been here," but they are also backed up
by a crop of defenders who are all pushing for starting
assignment nods. Sean Henderson (6-0,250, West Mifflin,
PA) and pass rushing Matt Grebenc (5-7, 185, Wickliffe,
OH) will vie for nose guard duty along with talented soph
backups at every position.
Perhaps the best situation on the defense occurs at
linebacker where five exceptional players are on hand to
work the two posts. Hard hitting Jim Durkin (5-11, 225,
Westchester, NY) and Bob O'Rorke (6-2, 295, Pittsburgh)
will trade time on the left side with a trio of battle-tested
letter winners ready to run down the opposition from the
right linebacker slot. Fleet-footed Willie Chealey (5-11,
192, Orlando, FL) who appears fully recovered from a leg
injury has the inside track, but Barry Skodak (6-1, 195,
Greensburg, PA) and Randy James (6-2, 200, East Alleg
heny) are issuing strong challenges to man the position.
Durkin led the tackling assault last year with 105 hits
while John O'Rorke followed with 100 stops and Beaure
gard was right in step with 98 thumps. Jordan, Bob
O'Rorke, Chealey and Giavasis all registered over 80
tackles in the stingly Scot defense.

“OUR DEFENSE■s IS FASTER”
Back to patrol the secondary for the Plaid is free safety
Dave Parker (Industry, PA) who tied a season record with
his eight interceptions. Also on tap are the Rose brothers,
Greg and Keith (Coraopolis, PA), owners of 87 stops and
four aerial thefts between them. Mike Emge (Beaver Falls,
PA) rounds out the returning quartet with Dan Gierlak
(Buffalo, NY) and Ray Bracy (Youngstown, OH) rotating
throughout the defensive backfield in relief roles.
The biggest question mark lies in the replacement for
record breaking placekicker and Kodak All-America Rich
Ruszkiewicz, the owner of three Edinboro field goal marks.
Creehan feels instant help has been recruited but the
Scots' ability to score three-pointers will become clearer as
the season progresses.

assistant. After taking the reigns at Morris Catholic in
Denville, NJ his club turned around a 2-7 first season to
finish 8-1 and win the league title a year later. He moved to
the collegiate level as a graduate assistant backfield coach
in 1976-77 at the powerful University of Delaware under
the famed Tubby Raymond. During his two years with the
Blue Hens they went 9-3-1 and 8-2 while winning a berth
in the NCAA playoffs. The New Jersey product spent 1978
as the offensive coordinator on a 5-3 Tufts University squad
before accepting a similar post at Gettysburg in 1979. In his
three-year stint with the Bullets he was the architect of a
wing-T attack that established 16 new offensive records
while Gettysburg posted respective 5-5, 6-3-1 and 6-4
slates under his direction. The newly acquired Scot coach
now resides in Edinboro.

Tom Herman will begin his ninth year of coaching at
his alma mater where he has helped the Scot program on
both the offensive and defensive side of the ledger since his
return. In his first season with the Scots, he tutored the
defensive line and followed that with three seasons as the
offensive coordinator in addition to serving as offensive
line coach. In 1979 he was named assistant head coach
and defensive coordinator where he groomed the Scot
linebacking corps. Originally a standout football player at
Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Tom continued his grid
career at Edinboro State for four years where he started as
a center during his junior campaign and then was a regular
defensive end in his senior season. After graduation from
Edinboro in 1972, he served as an assistant coach at
Cambridge Springs High School in Cambridge Springs, Pa.
Tom joined the Marshall University staff in 1974 as a
graduate assistant offensive tackle and tight end coach.
While at Marshall, the former Edinboro gridder earned his
master's degree in health and physical education before
returning to Edinboro in 1975 where he now resides with
his recent bride Kathy.
JOHN D'OTTAVIO - Offensive Coordinator
Bringing a broad background of offensive coaching
experience to the Scot camp is veteran mentor John
D'Ottavio who last year returned to the Pennsylvania Con
ference where he started as a player at East Stroudsburg in
1966. The Roxbury, New Jersey native was a first team
alUstate quarterback at Roxbury High and captained the
team in a 7-2 senior year. A knee injury in his second year
at East Strdudsburg ended his playing career but launched
him into a brilliant coaching future after graduation in
1970. He became an assistant coach at Randolph High
(Dover, NJ) for three years where he went 5-1 as a frosh
coach, 8-0 directing the jayvees and 7-2 as a varsity

MIKE BURKE - Defensive Une
Taking over the duties of keeping the Scots' front line
of defense stingy once again is 1960 Ambridge High grad
Mike Burke who is originally from Baden, Pa. Mike
garnered varsity letters while playing both offensive and
defensive tackle for the Bridgers before coming to Edinboro
in 1962 where he started on the defensive line. He earned a
varsity letter in his first season with the Scots, sat out two
years and then returned to Edinboro where he received his
B.S. in elementary education in 1967. Upon graduation
Mike joined the Armed Forces where he spent two years in
the Navy before taking a teaching position in Erie, Pa. The
Edinboro grad returned to Edinboro for an M.Ed. in 1972
and for six years was a defensive coordinator and assistant
varsity coach at Erie's Strong Vincent High School.
Highlighting his tenure in Vincents' grid program was the
Colonels highly successful 1977 season when they
captured the city championship. Mike along with his wife,
Lynne, and their two children, Dawnielle and Molly make
their home in Erie.

in 1971 he was named offensive back of the year in
addition to being tabbed as the league's MVP. Malen
continued his football exploits as a defensive back at
Westminster College and was a two-year letter winner for
the Titans despite being hampered by injuries during his
freshman and senior seasons. After graduation in 1976
with a B.S. degree in mathematics, he was appointed
assistant coach at Canfield (Ohio) High School. In his third
season he was named offensive coordinator for a Canfield
team that led the entire Buckeye state in scoring by totaling
423 points in ten games. Under his direction in 1980 ,
Canfield scored at a 23 points-per-game clip while netting

was offensive coordinator when the Scots finished 12th
nationally in total offense. In his 10 years prior to joining
the Scot staff, as Fairview High's head coach he amassed
an amazing 76-12 football record. His teams captured four
league championships. The knowledgeable Scot coach
graduated from Slippery Rock in 1957 and earned his
master's degree from Buffalo University. The Girard

him All-Ohio conference defensive end laurels as Jim was
also named the Yellow Jackets' Most Valuable Defensive

education degree from BW in 1981, he spent two seasons
coaching defensive ends at Southern Illinois University
where he received his master's degree in physical educa

Prior to the 1926 season, Edinboro was a state normal
school and did not play a complete intercollegiate schedule.
Therefore, any records prior to that season should not be
considered as part of the intercollegiate football history of
