EDINBORO UNIVERSITY

After 125 years of service to the tri-state area, Edin
boro experienced its most significant change in history on
July 1, 1983, when the College became Edinboro Univer
sity of Pennsylvania. Founded as a private academy in
1857, Edinboro University has continued its surge to the
forefront as one of the leading educational institutions in
western Pennsylvania. Situated on a sprawling 585-acre
campus in the scenic resort community of Edinboro, the
University is within 100 miles of the educational and
cultural centers of Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. It is
just 15 miles south of Erie, the third largest city in
Pennsylvania, and easily accessible from all directions by
interstates 79, 80 and 90.
Edinboro has the distinction of being the second
normal school established in Pennsylvania and the 12th in
the United States. It has grown to more than forty buildings
including the 350,000-volume Baron-Forness Library, a
modern seven-story structure which serves as a focal point
for the spacious campus. Nearly 6,000 students repre
senting almost every county in the Commonwealth, as well
as numerous states and foreign countries attend Edinboro.
Its tradition of educational service and research is matched
by a distinguished faculty, more than two-thirds of whom
have earned doctoral degrees.
The University now offers more than 100 under
graduate, graduate, and associate degree programs, a
diversity unmatched by any other college or university in
northwestern Pennsylvania. While seeking to meet the

educational needs of its region from both a professional
and cultural standpoint, Edinboro now makes contributions
in the fields of education, government, environmental
improvement, urban and rural problems, crime prevention,
and service to business and industry. Recent program
developments include those in the high-demand areas of
allied health, business administration, communication,
computer technology, nursing, and various pre-profes
sional offerings such as law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy
and veterinary science. Numerous student internships
provide additional examples of the University's efforts to
create a close working relationship with the people it
serves while, at the same time, offering students intel
lectual and career opportunities.
Edinboro has initiated the University Honors Program
to provide challenging and enriched learning experiences
for academically gifted students. Undergraduate students
are encouraged to strive for academic excellence both in
their major fields and in other disciplines. Honors students
pursue studies that are greater in depth and scope than
those required of other undergraduates.
Although the costs for attending Edinboro rank among
the lowest in the Commonwealth, over $8,000,000 in
financial aid is available annually to eligible students.
Students are admitted to the University in September,
January, or at the beginning of each summer session and
are considered for admission on the basis of their general
scholarship, nature of secondary program, and SAT or ACT
scores.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR — JIM McDONALD

Athletic Director - Jim McDonald

Edinboro University's athletic program was
placed under the talented and aggressive leadership
of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis
on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship
foundation has become his top priority while numer
ous changes and innovations have also keyed the
Scots' athletic program under his direction.

Through his efforts more than 1.3
million dollars has been raised during the
past three years with an additional
$511,000 anticipated during the 1984-85
sports campaign.
The funds generated by the energetic athletic
director's efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's
men and women athletes who compete in the Scots
seventeen intercollegiate sports.
In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected
winning tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the
former health and physical education professor has
vastly expanded the University's summer activities.
Fifteen summer sports camps are conducted on
the University's campus along with fifteen band
camps on twelve recently constructed football fields
which also accommodate pre-season drills for the
University of Pittsburgh Panthers and Duquesne
University. Sox Harrison Stadium is the site of the
Cleveland Browns vs. the Buffalo Bills annual rookie
scrimmage, which has been a yearly mid-summer
highlight.

The personable athletic director also introduced
Edinboro's Hall of Fame program which has evolved
into an annual year-ending event to honor present
and past athletes. His most recent project was the
completion of a $90,000 showcase weight room
which will service the entire campus community and
also be a prime aid for Divison I aspirations in the
Scots wrestling program.
McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and
for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball
coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing
season while his teams compiled an impressive 181
wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his
cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania
Conference crowns, the PC state championship and
two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAfA
National Tournament. His teams set 27 University
records and made 19 post-season appearances vyhile
four of his players were named All-Americans/
Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro,
McDonald served as assistant basketball coach in
Erie, Pa. He is a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High
School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia.
In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and
physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan
College and he also holds a master's degree in health
from the University of Buffalo.
As an undergraduate, he set nine school records
at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPl
basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the second
leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly
over 33 points a game, and led his team to the
national basketball tournament in Kansas City,
Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Tourna
ment Team in 1959 and 1960.
In 1966, McDonald was seli^cted Area Eight
Coach of the Year by the easterni Seaboard coaches
and that same year was honored as one of the top ten
finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll.
McDonald's honors also include selection to the
West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and
membership in the West Virginia Sports Hall of
Fame. He served four years on the NAIA's AllAmerican selection committee and was chosen by
the NAIA to coach an All-American team of NBAbound cagers who won the Gold Medal in Israel's
Hapoel Games.
In addition to his classroom and basketball
coaching duties, McDonald was Edinboro's golf
coach for 17 years during which his teams won over
40 tournaments and finished as high as 3rd place at
the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a
record of extensive community involvement. He was
Little League Baseball Director for four years and for
the pa.^t four years, has been a member of the
General McLane School Board. He and his wife, Mary
Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike, and Matthew.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH — DENNY CREEHAN

OFFENSE POINT POTENT AGAIN

"My number one concern is to see that all
the athletes in our program continue suc
cessfully toward and obtain their degrees,”
added Creehan.

Head Coach • Denny Creehan

Since Denny Creehan's appointment five
years ago as the ninth head coach in Edinboro's
football history, the Fighting Scots have commanded
respect both in the highly regarded Pennsylvania
Conference as well as on the national scene. Record
breaking performances have become the order of the
day while riding the crest of a glossy 31-18-1 ledger
over the past five seasons. The 34-year-old mentor
has produced a .633 winning percentage mark to
move him into first place on Edinboro's all-time
coaching list.
Over the past two seasons Creehan's clubs have
posted an impressive 1 7-4 chart while figuring in 43
school records that were either tied or broken.
Following up a brilliant 9-2 slate two years ago, along
with the PC's Western Divison' title, Creehan's
charges blazed to an 8-2 card last fall while becoming
Edinboro's most explosive offensive team ever.
The 1983 Scots scored a record breaking 41.2
points per game and ranked second in the nation
among NCAA Division II competitors in total offense
with a 461.1 yards per contest output. That output
was good enough to be rated 10th among all the
major college's and universities in the country ahead
of such schools as Boston College (13th), Florida
State (14th), and North Carolina (15th).
While producing a respected competitor on the
football field is, of course, an annual goal, Creehan
has continually stressed the importance of aca
demics as a top priority for his student athletes. "We
must be winners in the classroom first," indicated
the Edinboro University mentor.

Creehan was a captain of Edinboro University
1970 team that captured the Lambert Bowl, em
blematic of the best college football team in the East,
won the Pennsylvania Conference Championship
and earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs, He
starred in the secondary as a strong safety that
season when the Fighting Scots finished their
regular campaign undefeated with a 9-0 reco/d.
Prior to a three-year stint on the Edinboro staff as
an assistant, Creehan served as recruiting coordi
nator at the University of Pittsburgh in 1974 under
Coach Johnny Majors. The following year he was a
member of the Carnegie-Mellon University football
staff as the team's offensive coordinator.
Upon graduation from Edinboro in 1971,
Creehan was named offensive coordinator at Key
stone Oaks High School in Pittsburgh where he
directed an offense that netted 300 yards per game. A
year later as Keystone Oaks' defensive coordinator,
he tutored a unit that allowed only eight points per
game and permitted only a 33 percent completion
mark by opposing quarterbacks.
Creehan distinguished himself in the coaching
ranks as defensive coordinator at Edinboro in 1976
when the Scots were ranked fqurth among the
nation's NCAA schools in ruling defense and
claimed 18 interceptions. In th*e spring of 1977, he
performed as acting head coach for Edinboro's Bill
McDonald who was on a sabbatical leave.
The young mentor has likewise had an outstand
ing athletic career as a football player. After starring
as both a halfback and strong safety at Bethel Park
High School, the Castle Shannon, Pa. native accu
mulated numerous gridiron honors at Edinboro. At
the conclusion of his senior campaign for the Fighting
Scots, he was accorded first team All-East honors by
the ECAC and first team All-State Associated Press
accolades as the Scots' strong safety. In addition, he
was named to the Pittsburgh Press All-District first
team and to the NAIA District 18 All-Star squad. He
was one of the three 1970 captains who accepted
Edinboro's Lambert Bowl trophy at the Lambert
Awards Banquet in New York City.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Creehan of Bethel
Park, the Fighting Scot coach resides in Edinboro
with his wife, Linda, and their two sons, Kevin and
Casey.

Edinboro University hopes to maintain its "offensive"
reputation on the football field in 1984 as Coach Denny
Creehan's Fighting Scots strive to continue the pace which
made them one of the most explosive grid squads in the
nation. The Scots, who return 13 starters and 30 lettermen,
finished second nationally in offense among the NCAA's
Division II competitors last year after averaging a record
shattering 41.2 points and 461 yards per game. Enroute to
an 8-2 season, Edinboro climbed to eighth in the polls at
one point and registered 21 new school marks while tying 3
others.
"If it's the skill people who make the offense go, then
we should have productive results," predicted Creehan
whose clubs have been winners in 20 of their last 24
outings. "But if it's the interior line that makes it go, then
we might have some question marks," cautioned the sixthyear Boro mentor.
"As far as the defense is concerned, we'll be solid at all
11 positions if we get the same kind of play out of our ends
that we did last year," Creehan continued. "Tom Herman
(defensive coordinator) has always managed to develop a
defensive unit that's traditionally very tough and we're
counting on him to give us another aggressive, but
disciplined bunch of players," he added.
"You have to have a lot of talent and some luck to win
in our conference anymore," Creehan offered. "It has
become a real meat grinder. Giving anyone a decided edge
is difficult but Clarion has 17 starters back and, on paper,
Indiana has had the best two recruiting years in a row," the
Scot coach indicated.
Giving Edinboro the inside track to be point potent
again is one of the country's most accurate passers in

senior quarterback Blair Hrovat (Northfield, OH). The
talented field general directed a high-powered wing-T
offense that netted 4,611 yards while accounting for 10
new records that included career plays (686), season
passing attempts (181), season total offense (1,938),
career total offense (4,244), season completions (99), game
completions (18), career touchdown passes (35), season
touchdown passes (19), career passing (3,586), and game
touchdown passes (4). Hrovat, who now owns 14
Edinboro grid records, finished second nationally (NCAA II)
in passing efficiency last year by connecting on 99 of 181
attempts for a sparkling 54.7 percentage.
"Blair deserves All-America recognition if he con
tinues his pace," stated Creehan. "He's already the top
passer in our school's history and this year he should finish
among the all-time Conference leaders," the Scot coach
projected.
Waiting to make his mark at the quarterback slot is
talented sophomore Scott Dodds (Beaver, PA) who,
Creehan concedes, would probably be a starter playing for
anyone else. "We will definitely play Scott because he's
that good and deserving of the chance," revealed Creehan
after electing to redshirt the promising signal caller last fall.
Augmenting Hrovat's aerial attack is a relentless
ground game spearheaded by halfbacks Bob Klenk (Pitts
burgh, PA) and Damon Chambers (Willingboro, NJ), who
churned out more than 500 yards each last year. Klenk
threaded his way for 517 yards, led the Pennsylvania
Conference in scoring with 76 points and was the sixth top
scorer in the nation while Chambers sped for 507 yards and
ranked third in the team's scoring parade with 8 touch
downs.

Chealey adds to his tackling total.
"Overall our backfield will have a lot more speed as a
group," forecasted Creehan. "Damon is ready to blossom
into the great player we expect him to be and Bob is one of
the most reliable halfbacks we have," the Edinboro
University coach added.
Giving the Scots a running back bonus this year is the
return of Mitchell Kelly (Canton, OH), a PC First Team
selection in 1982, who is once again in the lineup.
Sophomore Carmen Cicero (Niles, OH) emerged as a top
young prospect after spring ball with newcomer Tony Allen
(E. Carnegie, PA) ready to show his wares out of a halfback
slot.
Senior fullback Ray Rhodes (5-10, 190, White Plains,
NY) gives the Scots' running game an added dimension
with his speed. "If he improves his blocking, he could
become one of the best fullbacks we'ye ever had," offered
Creehan.
Rounding out the arsenal of offensive weapons are
wide receivers Gary McKnight (Orlando, FL) and Eric
Bosley (Willingboro, NJ) who could become the top two
pass catchers in the Conference if they avoid injury
problems. McKnight snagged 16 tosses for 428 yards last
year while Bosley, after a late start, tied an Edinboro record
with 3 TD grabs in a single game. Letter winner Dave
Gierlak (Buffalo, NY), the third in a trio of brothers to play for
the Scots, complements the duo with sophomore Bob
Suren (Parma, OH) earning the early nod at tight end.
The biggest question mark hovering over the Plaid's
offensive forces concerns the offensive line. "It's not that
we don't have good people on our line," indicated Creehan,
"it's just that they're untested. As a matter of fact, they
have the potential to become one of the best offensive lines
in our conference," he summed.
Trueman kicks his way into the record book.

Center Buddy Carroll and tackle Rick Rosenburg, a
Steeler signee, have graduated leaving Dom Grande (Pitts
burgh, PA), a 6-0, 250-pound left guard, the heir apparent
to their leadership roles. Joining him are tackles Mark
Wallace (6-3, 225, Uniontown, PA) and Jim Ritt (6-4, 255,
Chesterland, OH) who bring game experience up front with
right guard Scott Weinhold (6-4, 240, Pittsburgh, PA). The
early nod at center goes to Mark Merritt (5-11, 245,
Industry, PA), but Dave Higham (6-2, 240, Hubbard, OH) is
pushing for a full-time job. Tackle Jim Britt (6-4, 260,
Girard, OH) in addition to guards Frank Lucca (6-3, 240,
Mentor, OH), and Dave Nye (6-0, 225, Windsor, OH) are all
challenging for regular duty.
"The only other variable we have to figure on
offensively is the period of adjustment which is inevitable
in a coaching change," said Creehan. The Scot mentor was
referring to the recent addition of Jerry Gallagher as the
team's offensive coordinator after John D'Ottavio accepted
a post with the USFL's New Jersey Generals. Gallagher,
however, is a D'Ottavio disciple and also a well-schooled
enthusiast of the wing-T philosophy.
Not to be denied their share of the limelight is a
defensive unit that ranked eighth among the nation's
leaders in rushing defense with a mere 65.6 yards per
game allowance. The figure ranked as the second best
mark in Edinboro's history and helped limit the Scots'
oppostion to only 14.4 points per contest. The Boro's
defensive units, under the tutorship of coordinator Tom
Herman for the last five years, have been traditionally
stingy in the Pennsylvania Conference where Edinboro has
been the leader in rushing defense four out of the past five
seasons.
Headlining the cast here are a pair of senior AllAmerican candidates in 6-3, 230-pound tackle Rick Jordan

(Jamestown, NY) and 6-0, 192-pound linebacker Willie
Chealey (Orlando, FL) who combined for 186 stops last fall.
Chealey, a Conference first team pick, was the team's
leading tackier with 122 hits while Jordan, another first
team selection, contributed 64 jolts and led the list in sacks
with 12 to put his career total of 22 just 5 shy of the school
record.
"Willie is one of the few linebackers around who has
the speed to cover receivers coming out of the backfield,"
beamed Creehan, "while Rick has exceptional quickness
that makes the pass rush and pursuit his forte."
Teaming with Chealey at the other backer spot in the
5-2 alignment is 6-2, 220-pound senior Bob O'Rorke
(Pittsburgh, PA) tabbed by Creehan as "a fiery athlete who
gets the rest of the defense 'up' and makes the big play. "
Sophomore Allen Ellis (5-11,205, Albion, NY) emerged as
the number one backup to O'Rorke and Chealey after
spring ball.
Tackle Don Espy (6-3, 245, Brookville, PA) a three-year
monogram winner, and junior middle guard Sean Hender
son (6-0, 230, West Mifflin, PA) another pass rush stand
out, team up with Jordan to form the heart of the Scots'
forward wall. The coaching staff is also high on sophomore
tackle Chuck Murray (6-4, 240, Tyrone, PA) who made
noted progress in spring camp. Adding help in pass rush
situations is Matt Grebenc (Wickliffe, OH) another quick
middle guard operative like Henderson.
Primary attention will be focused on the defensive end
slots manned by juniors Dave Emmert (6-3, 210, Lower
Burrell, PA)and John Brenneman (5-10, 225, Warren, OH).
"Just as the offensive line is the unproven portion of our
offense, so are the ends to our defense," theorized
Creehan. "The manpower is there, the drawback is the
experience factor," he concluded. Sophomore John

Cardone (Pittsburgh, PA) should also get a chance to prove
he can protect the flank.
Senior strong safety Keith Rose (Coraopolis, PA)
regarded as "the coach on the field," keys a solid Scot
secondary where the Scots show the most depth. Free
safety Ray Bracy (Youngstown, OH) the team's leader in
interceptions and fumble recoveries, anchors the unit with
Rose. Sophomores Terrell Clifford (Canton, OH) and
Martelle Betters (Connellsville, PA) are projected as the
starting corners, but redshirts Matt Robinson (Orlando, FL)
and Mark Perkins (Harve de Grace, MD) are talented
enough to step in at anytime. Newcomer Steve Bourquin
(Louisville, OH) has all the tools to log plenty of playing time
at either safety slot.
Edinboro's kicking game appears to possess one of its
strongest kicking combinations in years with placement
booter Jim Trueman (Bellevue, PA) and punter Kevin
Conlan (Frewsburg, NY). Trueman, in his freshman debut,
was listed among the nation's scoring leaders with 69
points via 39 PAT's and 10 field goals. The PC First Team
pick set Edinboro records for the most extra point boots in a
season (39) and the single game PAT standard (7). Conlan,
who has proved his ability to get distance and heighth on
his punts, displayed the consistency in the spring needed to
make him a valuable asset should the offense get slowed
down.
Creehan, who sports an impressive 17-4 card over the
past two seasons, has moved into first place on the winning
percentage list of Edinboro grid coaches. After five
campaigns the Scots' mentor owns a 31 -18-1 record for a
.633 mark which surpassed the .614 reading held by
former coach Bill McDonald on the strength of a 54-34-7
chart. In addition to the 21 records revised last year,
Creehan's charges also extended a streak of consecutive
road wins to 13 and have not lost an away game since
1981.
The Fighting Scots will tuneup for Conference play by
opening the 1984 schedule against a par of West Virginia
foes when they kickoff the season September 1 at West
Liberty and host West Virginia Wesleyan in a Sox Harrison
Stadium home opener on September 8.

MIKE BURKE - Defensive Line
Taking over the duties of.keeping the Scots' front line
of defense stingy once again is 1960 Ambridge High grad
Mike Burke who is originally from Baden, Pa. Mike
garnered varsity letters while playing both offensive and
defensive tackle for the Bridgets before coming to Edinboro
in 1962 where he started on the defensive line. He earned a
varsity letter in his first season with the Scots, sat out two
years and then returned to Edinboro where he received his
B.S. in elementary education in 1967. Upon graduation
Mike joined the Armed Forces where he spent two years in
the Navy before taking a teaching position in Erie, Pa. The
Edinboro grad returned to Edinboro for an M.Ed. in 1972
and for six years was a defensive coordinator and assistant
varsity coach at Erie's Strong Vincent High School.
Highlighting his tenure in Vincents' grid program was the
Colonels highly successful 1977 season when they
captured the city championship. Mike along with his wife,

where his efforts have continually distinguished his alma
mater's grid program. Since his appointment as defensive
coordinator in 1979, Edinboro has ranked first in total
defense during three of the past four seasons in the
Pennsylvania Conference. His traditionally stingy defen
sive units have also rated among the national leaders
during that span highlighted by last year's eighth-place
finish after allowing a mere 65.6 yards per game, the
second best mark in Edinboro University history. In his first
year with the Scots, he tutored the defensive line and
followed with a three-year stint as offensive coordinator
before returning to the defensive side of the ledger. A
standout gridder at Ellwood City's Lincoln High School,
Tom continued his football career as both a center and
defensive end at Edinboro. Following graduation in 1972,
he was an assistant coach at Cambridge Springs (PA) High
School until joining the Marshall University grid staff in
1974. After receiving his master's degree from Marshall,
Tom returned to Edinboro in 1975 where he now resides
with his wife, Kathy.
GERRY GALLAGHER - Offensive Coordinator
Bringing a broad background,of offensive coaching
experience to the Scot camp is veteran mentor Gerry
Gallagher, former head football coach at Morris Catholic
High School in Denville, New Jersey, for the last seven
years. Gallagher, 32, succeeds John D'Ottavio, who was
named as assistant coach with the New Jersey Generals.
Gallagher, like D'Ottavio, is an expert in the philosophy of
the Wing-T offense. An 11 -year veteran high school coach,
Gallagher served for three seasons under the tutelage of

JIM BOWEN - Offensive Ends

^

Bringing a broad background/^f offensive and defen
sive coaching experience to the Scot camp is veteran
mentor Jim Bowen. Bowen, who is entering his fifteenth
season at Edinboro, will also be celebrating his twenty-fifth
year in coaching. After graduating from Slippery Rock
University in 1957, Bowen amassed an amazing 71-8-1
record in his first nine years as head coach at Fairview High
School. Bowen then continued his record-setting perfor
mances at the Boro where in the early seventies he guided
the Scots' offensive units to outstanding finishes at both
the state and national levels. Success followed him
coaching on the defensive side of the football where he
groomed both linebackers and secondary stalwarts who
continued to revise Edinboro records. Bowen has helped
shape the collegiate careers of such Fighting Scot stand
outs as linebackers Jim Krentz and Greg Sullivan, the top
two tacklers in Edinboro history. In addition, he has tutored
such Boro greats as Jim Romaniszyn, Dave Green, Joe
Sanford, Bob Mengerink, Al Raines, Howard Hackley and
Bob Jahn. The knowledgeable Scot mentor, who earned his
master's degree from Buffalo University, resides in Girard.

Lowell, Massachusetts' Mike Jenoski begins his
second year on the University's coaching staff and serves
as an offensive line coach. A graduate of Lowell High
School, he earned three varsity letters while playing for the
Red Raiders as an offensive tackle. Mike continued his
gridiron career at the University of Maine where he
garnered three more varsity letters before graduation with
a physical education degree in 1983. While operating from an
offensive tackle slot, Jenoski was a member of the Black
Bears 1982 squad that went 7-4 and finished as Yankee
Conference co-champions. Mike will be sharing his exper
tise with a Fighting Scot offensive line which is long on
talent but short on experience.
SCOTT SALTER - Linebackers
Sharing his expertise with this year's veteran crop of
linebackers, while also serving as special teams' coordi
nator, is Newfane, New York's Scott Salter. The secondyear Scot staff member garnered letters in football,
baseball and track at Newfane Central High School where
his play for the Panthers' football team netted All-Niagara
County offensive guard plaudits. The Newfane native went
on to be an offensive line mainstay for the Golden Griffins
of Canisius College and earned varsity grid letters in all four
years as a guard before receiving his bachelor's degree in
physical education. Scott and his wife, Cheryl, have been
married for a little over a year and now reside in Edinboro.
AL PAQUETTE - Defensive Ends
Lewiston, Maine's Al Paquette joins the Scot gridiron
staff as a graduate assistant and serves as an defensive
ends coach. A graduate of Lewiston High School, Al
continued his gridiron career at the University of Maine
where he distinguished himself as a student coach in
charge of offensive backs in his junior and senior years. Al
earned his B.A. degree in marketing in 1982 and served as
an assistant coach at State University of New York at
Albany in 1983. Currently residing in Edinboro, the new
Scot aide is pursuing a master's degree in student
personnel services.

SCOTT LAUGHINGHOUSE - Defensive Backs
Entering his first year in the Edinboro coaching ranks is
Scott Laughinghouse, who will groom the Scots' highly
touted defensive secondary. The Watchung, New Jersey,
native began his gridiron career at Watchung Hills Regional
High School where he was captain of both his high school
football and baseball teams. Scott continued his football
and baseball careers at Middlebury College and was a
three-year letterman In football and a four-year monogram
winner in baseball. After graduation in 1983 with a B.A.
degree in economics, he served as an assistant football and
baseball coach at Middlebury. Currently residing in Edin
boro, Scott is pursuing a master's degree in secondary
school administration.

Bob Klingler

ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
DR. KATHLEEN LIPKOVICH
Dr. Kathleen Lipkovich was named Edinboro's
first associate athletic director at the outset of the
1981 school year to help administer both the men's
and women’s athletic program.
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Lipkovich
has had teaching and coaching experience at West
Virginia University, Central Connecticut State Col
lege, and Trinity College. The Ohio native, who
graduated from Chaney High School, began her
teaching and coaching career in 1972 with the
Howland Local School District in Howland, Ohio, and
then held a similar position from 1972 through 1975
at McDonald High School in McDonald, Ohio.
The 1972 Youngstown State graduate received
her M.S. degree in 1975 from West Virginia Univer
sity and was awarded a doctorate from that same
institution in 1977 after majoring in educational
administration and physical education. She com
pleted a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard in
educational administration prior to her arrival at
Edinboro.

TEAM TRAINER - BOB KLINGLER
Bob Klingler begins his 18th year of giving
Fighting Scot athletes the tops in professional
medical care. The 1952 Lock Haven grad ventured to
Hermann School of Physical Therapy in Houston,
Texas and became a registered physical therapist in
1954. He later received his M.S. from Bucknell. Prior
to accepting his Edinboro post Klingler taught at
Milton Hershey, a private boys' school in Hershey,
Pa., where he served as the Spartans' head football
mentor, head track coach and assistant basketball
coach. His cinder and cage teams never experienced
a losing season while his football eleven would
consistently garner winning charts in the powerful
Capitol Conference. "Doc" has provided the Edinboro
athletic program with high quality student trainers
who have gone on to distinguish themselves in the
profession after graduation from college. Bob and his
daughter, Julie, make their home in nearby Washing
ton Township.

Harold "Hal" Umbarger joined Edinboro Uni
versity's athletic staff a year ago as assistant to the
athletic director. He brings a wealth of talent and
experience to the administrative level of the athletic
program and plays a vital role in overseeing the
academic progress of student athletes as well as
coordinating the on-going functions of the athletic
director's office and the summer programs which
involve the department. The VVest Newton, Pa.,
native is a 1954 Slippery RoclvUniversity graduate
and also owns his masters degree from Penn State.
After a three-year stint with the U.S. Army Security
Agency in Europe, he coached basketball and base
ball at Moshannon Valley (Pa.) High School before

HILLTOPPERS OUTLOOK
After two years of building a base for West Liberty's
gridiron program. Coach Larry Shank's hopefuls appear
ready to make their mark in the West Virginia Inter
collegiate Athletic Conference. With 40 returning lettermen forming a solid nucleus of experience and 15 starters
back at their slots, the HiUtoppers should turn the corner in
1984 and could even challenge for conference title.
Although Shank must find a replacement to direct his
scoring attack at quarterback, his offensive unit has more
overall speed and experience in t)ffe backfield. "We must
improve our pass blocking and perimeter offense to be
successful," claims Shank. Defensively the HiUtoppers
have their front seven returning intact with untested but
talented help on hand in the secondary. "Overall we have
more depth defensively than we've had in the past,"
revealed Shank. West Liberty's leadership will come from
running back Tim Thomas, offensvie guard Tim Roller,
defensive end Steve Remenaric and defensive back Rob
Caldwell. Ties against West Virginia Tech and Fairmont,
along with a one-point loss to West Virginia Wesleyan,
spelled the differnece between a 6-3 finish and a 3-4-2
ledger that the HiUtoppers registered. Shank's charges are
confident they have the ingredients to make that difference
occur this fall.

Wesleyan makes first trip to Sox Harrison Stadium.

BOBCATS OUTLOOK
Coach Bill Struble is still waiting to have his recruiting
efforts reflected in the Bobcats gridiron program after just
one year behind him at the helm of Wesleyan's football
program. While Struble waits for his crop of young, but
talented newcomers to make their presence known, he will
pin his hopes on a defense that features seven returning
starters in the lineup. Forming the nucleus of the battletested contingent are linebacker Phil Suehr, tackle Paul
Szolis and strong safety Terry McAlister. Most of the
defensive experience is found along the defensive front
wall and in the lienbacking corps with only the secondary
somewhat suspect. The major problem facing Struble and
his staff is an offense that shows only four returnees with
the skill positions the pivitol areas needing solid replace
ments. Hoping to improve on last year's disappointing 2-8
record are 18 lettermen who must face another demanding
schedule filled with respected West Virginia Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference foes. Also forming major stumbling
blocks for the Wildcats are NCAA Divison II power,
Edinboro University, and Division III standout, Dayton.
Compounding matters is a 1984 campaign that sees
Struble's Bobcats at home on only four dates while six
contests are billed on the road.

VULCANS OUTLOOK
Coach Jeff Petrucci has turned the California football
program on an upswing that resulted in the school’s best
record in 20 year's with a 7-3 finish last year. A crop of 34
lettermen are back to continue the winning trend orches
trated by quarterback Kevin Russell who led the NCAA II
stats with 2,424 yards in the air augmented by a school
record 21 TD tosses and a conference/mark of 195 passes.
While Perry Kemp, now with Jacksonville of the USFL, one
of the nation's premier receivers' is gone; tailback Chris
Henthorn (45 catches-422 yards), tight end Gary Bero (23305), wideout Tom Pietrocollo (17-283) and flanker Dave
Lease (12-151) are all returning targets. Fullback Scott
Jackovitz (507 yards) along with Russell should enjoy the
protection offered by an awesome offensive line A
stubborn defense which yielded only 13 points per game
and allowed only 6 TD passes returns 8 starters. Tops here
are All-Conference picks safety Jim Snyder and linebacker
Frank Vulcano.

ROCKET OUTLOOK
With the departure of record-setting quarterback Don
Christian, Slippery Rock head coach Don Ault must find a
solid replacment to fill the void along with some de
pendable running backs to rebuild the Rocket backfield.
Junior Eric Denton, who threw only one pass last year, is
the heir apparent to Christian's spot with Charles Sanders
and Stanley Drummond expected to be the prime movers in
a highly emphasized Rocket running attack. Offensive
hopefuls will find plenty of talent and experience leading
the way up front where all five linemen return to pave the
way led by tackle Gary Charmel (6-3,245) and center Mark
Herrmann. More balance appears on the Rockets' defen
sive side of the ledger with the Green and White's 5-2
alignment steadied by rugged ends Jim Watts and George
Yarzab. Linebacker-turned-cornerback Craig Bouslough
and safety Ron Sachs spearhead an aggressive secondary
while the nation's fifth best punter (42.3), Jeff Williams, is
back to boot the offense out of trouble.

BIG INDIANS OUTLOOK
Junior quarterback Rich Ingold is hailed by lUP head
coach George Chaump as "the best quarterback in the
Pennsylvania Conference." Last season as a sophomore.
Ingold rewrote the lUP record book eight times with an
aerial attack where he was successful on 56.8 percent of
his passes for 2,388 yards and 16 touchdowns. Prime
targets on the receiving end this fall will be tight end Bill
Thompson and wide receiver Gregg'Brenner. Thompson is
making the switch to an end positon from fullback where he
rushed for 648 yards and caught 36 passes for almost 400
yards last year. Brenner led the Braves in catches last fall
with 44 grabs for 622 yards. Junior Dave Seidel gained 652
yards on the ground last season on 146 attempts and will
play out of the fullback slot this year. Linebacker Paul
Scruppi heads a list of eight defensive starters returning to
the Indians' camp. Scruppi, the author of 60 tackles in
1983, was named to the PC squad despite missing four
games due to an injury. Cornerback Kelvin Lewis, who
broke up ten passes and intercepted three, is another top
defensive returnee.

WARRIOR OUTLOOK
Veteran mentor Denny Douds looks for his "Warriors
to soar in '84" with the duo of strong-armed senior
quarterbacks, Andy Baranek and Charlie Diskin, returning
from spectacular performances. Each signal caller passed
for more than 1,100 yards with Baranek directing the
Warriors to the PC East title and garnering the Eastern
Division Player of the Year laurels. Diskin proved a more
than capable replacement during the campaign for the
injured Baranek when he tossed for more than 200 yards in
four games. Back for duty on the offensive unit are split end
Tim Bishop, center Drake Hall, guard Bob Caurson, tackle
Rick Werner, and a pair of battle-tested fullbacks in Dan
Duck and Mike Reichwein. Also waiting to be called on is
All-Conference kicker Joey Pingitore who booted a school
record 12 field goals last year. Although Douds will be hard
pressed to fill the shoes of all four starting linebackers, the
Warriors will count on a veteran secondary and defensive
line spearheaded by All-PC end Bill Camp.

GOLDEN EAGLE OUTLOOK
The defending Pennsylvania Conference champions
feature four returning All-Americans in tailback Elton
Brown, wide receiver Terry McFetridge, middle guard
Kevin Ewing, and defensive end Jon Haslett to lead the way
for second-year coach Gene Sobelewski. The Eagles can
strike through the air with junior quarterback Pat Carbol
who totaled 1,688 yards in the passing lanes with 14 TD
strikes to his credit. On the receiving end of most Carbol
pitches was Terry McFetridge, the recipient of 50 aerials for
945 yards and 11 tallies. Brown, an AP First Team pick,
should give the Golden Ones all the/^repower they need on
the ground after churning out 1,2f4 yards and 11 TD's as
the conference's leading rusher a year ago. Comple
menting him in the potent Clarion offense is All-PC West
tailback Geoff Alexander. Ewing, with his team leading 139
tackles and Haslett, who contributed 99 hits and 17 sacks,
form the nucleus of another stubborn Eagle defense.

BALD EAGLE OUTLOOK
Bald Eagle coach Jack Fisher wants to run a more
"option oriented offensive" this season to take advantage
of a strong offensive line and the running skills of quarter
back Doug Williams. Featured in the offensive line are
PSAC second team selection in tackle Todd Johnson (6-2,
225) who is aiming to move up a notch this year. Fisher
looks for improvement from Williams' passing game,
where he hit only 34 percent of his attempts last year, to
give the Eagle offense better balance. The Bald Eagles are
young but experienced in the defensive ranks where a host
of talented gridders return to starting assignments. Line
backers Bill Peterson (6-1, 205) and Stan Allan (6-1, 200)
are back in place with the secondary of Jere Warner, Alan
Urich, Tom McNally, and Jeff Swanson intact. PSAC First
Team middle guard Chris Kustanbauter will anchor the
defensive line.

FIREBIRDS OUTLOOK

September 24, 1983 at Shippensburg

First year coach Bobby Frazier takes the r< is of a
Firebird football program that went 0-10 last > ar and
hopes to enjoy the same success he previously expt ienced
at Bethune Cookman College in Florida where he compiled
a 23-13-1 record. Frazier has served a year as an assistant
coach and is in a position to already evaluate the players he
has on hand to play a vastly revamped schedule that lists
seven new opponents.
"This football season looks favorable for us," he said.
"We have 25 veterans, mostly sophomores, returning to
the gridiron who exhibit a lot of class and character on and
off the field." Coach Frazier plans for his Firebirds to use a
multiple offense this year. "The l-formation and the pro-set
will be our basic lineups." William Parker, a 5-10, 240pound center from Washington, D.C., and senior Cedric
Matthews, a 5-11,190-pound running back will help those
offensive formations work for Coach Frazier. Marcus
Doakes, a 6-1,200-pound linebacker from Houston, Texas,
who Coach Frazier describes as a "headhunter" and 5-11,
200-pound defensive back/linebacker Derrick Marshall,
also from Houston, will help to anchor a defense that
should present problems to opposing offenses.
"The coaches and players realize that 'poise' and not
promises win football games," said Frazier. "They also
realize that you cannot have poise without knowledge.
Practice camp will be a learning and teaching process for
all of us in 1984." Frazier is also aware of the fact that strict
conditioning is a necessity for winning. "We continue to
believe that excellent conditioning and losing cannot stay
in the same body. Therefore, excellent conditioning, poise
and knowledge will be our major thrust. It will be the thrust
that consequently will prove to everyone that we are
winning Firebirds," he concluded.

RED RAIDERS OUTLOOK
Coach Vito Ragazzo pins his hopes of improving last
year's disappointing 4-6 record on a trio of offensive
standouts in quarterback Mark Beans, flanker Tyrone Reed
and tailback Tom Miller. Beans was brilliant through the
airways last year when he connected on 57 percent of his
passes for 1,665 yards and 10 touchdowns. His top target
was Reed, who grabbed 45 tosses fp/ 564 yards and 5
scores. Tyrone Reed, an all-conference running back, will
be back to headline the Raider's ground attack where he
churned out 503 yards last fall. The biggest hurdle
Ragazzo'S charges must get over to become a winner,
however, is rebuilding a defensive unit that returns only 5
starters from 1983's squad. Defensive end Dave Hurdle,
ta'ckle Ron Reinhart, and middle guard Mike Truitt anchor
the front wall while linebacker Bob Boyle and safety Mark
Brezitski provide support help. Brezitski notched 78 stops
last yoar with Boyle chipping in 65 tackles.

ALL-TIME SCORES 1926-1952

Edinboro's intercollegiate football history began in
1926 when Edinboro became a four-year degree granting
institution and for the first time played a complete inter
collegiate schedule against other four-year degree granting
institutions.

1926 (3-3)
Coach: Sox Harrison

Prior to the 1926 season, Edinboro was a state normal
school and did not play a complete intercollegiate schedule.
Therefore, any records prior to that season should not be
considered as part of the intercollegiate football history of
Edinboro University.

1932 (3-2)
Coach: Sox Harrison

Beh ind a record breaking scoring pace that produced
a 41.2 points-per-game average, Edinboro University
posted one of its most successful football seasons in
history last year when the talent-laden Scots rolled to an
8-2 slate and were ranked as high as eighth in the country
among NCAA Division II schools. Enroute to the winning
mark, which was highlighted by an impressive 28-8 victory
over Clarion—the eventual Pennsylvania Conference
champion. Coach Denny Creehan's gridders registered 21
new records while tying 3 other marks.
Junior quarterback Blair Hrovat directed a highpowered Edinboro wing-T offense that netted a record
4,611 yards and revised the single season scoring standard
with 412 points. Hrovat personally accounted for 10 new
marks which included most plays-career (686), most yards
total offense-season (1,938), most total offense-career
(4,244 yards), most completions-season (99), most completions-game (18), most touchdown passes-career (35),
most touchdown passes-season (19), most passing yardscareer (3,586), most attempts-season (181), and most
touchdown passes-game (4). The junior signal caller
proved to be one of the most accurate passers in the nation
by hitting on 99 of 181 attempts for sparkling 54.7
percentage figure.
His top targets were a pair of halfbacks in senior Ron
Rankin and junior Bob Klenk along with wide receiver Gary
McKnight. Rankin, who was sidelined 3 games, snared 21
passes for 297 yards with Klenk pulling down 17 for 278
and McKnight, who claimed the longest scoring toss of the
season—a 68-yard strike—latching onto 16 for 428 yards.
Senior tight end Don Harr finished with 10 grabs for 185
yards, 5 of which were TD receptions to lead the team in
that category.
A trio of backs produced more than 500 yards on the
year with senior fullback Keith Collier rambling for 577,
junior halfback Bob Klenk winding his way for 517 and
fleet-footed sophomore Damon Chambers totaling 507.
Klenk proved to be the club's top point getter with 12
touchdowns and a pair of PAT conversions for 76 markers
with Chambers claiming third place honors via his 8 TD's
and 48 tallies.
Paving the way for the Fighting Scot offense were First
Team All-Conference senior linemen Rick Rosenberg and
Buddy Carroll. Rosenberg, a 6-4, 250-pound offensive
tackle, and Carroll, a 6-2, 230-pound center, were the
mainstays of a front wall that provided the blocking for a
record 461.1 yards per game.
Placekicker Jim Trueman also inked his name in the
Edinboro record book and became the first freshman in
conference history to earn a first team berth. The rookie
booter revised both the extra point standard for the season39, and set a new single game mark with 7 successful
conversions. He also nailed down runnerup honors in the
scoring department with his 69 total points.
Not to be denied their share of the limelight was a
defensive unit that was the second stingiest against the
rush in Edinboro's gridiron history by allowing only 65.6
yards per game and permitted only 14.4 points per game.
Spearheading a stubborn Edinboro defense was the
linebacking duo of Willie Chealy and Jim Durkin who

posted respective 122 and 101 tackle totals. The hard
hitting Choaley, who returned to action after breaking his
leg last fall, was also a Pennsylvania Conference first team
selection.
Rounding out the tackling leaders were senior middle
guard John O'Rorke with 86 stops, senior defensive ends
Bob Beauregard and Phil Giavasis showing identical 75-hit
outputs, followed by junior tackles Rick Jordan who
showed 64 thumps, and Don Espy with 61 tackles. Jordan,
likewise an all-conference selection, was the club's top
sack getter with 12 and now has a career total of 22, just 5
shy of the 27-sack team record.
Headlining the secondary was senior safety Dave
Parker who intercepted 3 aerials while breaking up 13
passing attempts. Parker concluded his career in the Scots
secondary tied for runnerup honors on the interceptions
chart with 12.
Creehan's chargers also claimed the distinction of
extending another club record in the win column. The
Fighting Scots have not suffered a loss at opponents'
stadiums since 1981 and now own a streak of 13
consecutive away victories. The 43 second half points
against Mercyhurst set a team record while the 6 intercep
tions against Shippensburg revised still another standard.
Creehan, who followed up 1982's impressive 9-2 card
with last year's 8-2 record, moved into the top spot
percentage-wise on the all-time win list among past
Edinboro coaches. The Scots' fifth-year mentor now owns
a 31-18-1 mark for a .633 winning percentage which
surpassed the previous high of .614 posted by former coach
Bill McDonald on the strength of his 54-34-7 chart.
With 13 of 22 starters scheduled for duty next fall and a
solid nucleus of 30 lettermen returning, the Fighting Scots
should continue their winning ways and prove to once
again be a contender for the Western Division title.

THE PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE

FIGHTING SCOT MEDIA OUTLETS

HISTORY OF PSAC FOOTBALL
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference is one of
the few leagues in the nation to sponsor a championship
game in football. The East vs. West conference champion
ship game, known as the "State Game," has been in
existence since 1960. Mythical champions were picked by
sportswriters from 1934 until 1950 with the champion
determined by the Saylor system from 1951 until 1959.
All members of the conference (with individual sports
exceptions) compete at the NCAA Division II level and have
since 1980. Athletes and teams have won numerous
honors in national competitions over the years and have
helped the PSAC become one of the most respected "small
college" conferences in the nation.
A list of member schools with their football affiliation
includes: Eastern Division — Bloomsburg University,
Cheyney University, East Stroudsburg University, Kutztown University, Mansfield University, Millersville Uni
versity, West Chester University; Western Division —
California University, Clarion University, Edinboro Uni
versity, Indiana University, Lock Haven University, Shippensburg University, Slippery Rock University.
