Like many other col­

leges, Edinboro has had a varied history.

Beginning as a sec­

ondary school, an asademy, in 1857, the school was chartered in
1861 as a State Nomd School, beino the second institution in
Pennsylvania to be sc recognized*

In 1926 it became a State

Teachers College, being authorised to offer four^year curricula
and to give degrees* Edinboro*s major field is Art Education,
but it also offers certificates in Secondary and Elementary Edr

ucation.

Edinboro i© the first State Teacher training institu-

-tion west of the Alleghenies, the second Normal School established
in Pennsylvania, and the Twelfth Normal School established in the

Johnny Peckham, a veteran from last

yeo.r*s squad, vdll aid the team; however, he- came out late this
year*

Some of the Raiders from which Sox Harrison must build a

squad are Mike Talko; who played some last year, end freshman
Dick Reed and Bob McVei^^h, who looked very go6d in Pre-season
practice.

Babcock, Alan: Senior, 20 years old, height 6^3'% vifeight 180,
graduated ftoiq Warren High School, Warren, Pa*, Class of 1946*
Varsity regular at Warren two years; in his senioh year his team
Went to, the semi-finale in the state. Two year letter-^man here
at Edinboro, and was the leading scorer last season.
Talko. Mikei Sophomore, 24 years old, height 5’7”, weight 150.
Graduated front Lilly High School at Lilly, t*a*, in 1942, where
he was lett^rman two years in football and three years in bas­
ketball* He won his letter at Edinboro last Jrear.^
McVeigh. Bob; Sophomore, l9 years old, height 6*3”, weight 160*
He graduated front Edinboro High School, Edinboro, Pa., with the
class of 1947, where he lettered one year in fo6tbaH and one in
basketball* He played on the basketball team that won the Class
C championship in their section and he was the leading scorer.
Before coming to Bdinboiro he lettered one' year in basketball at
Edgewood, Pa. He spent one quarter at Colorado A and M before
coming to Edinboro S«
C*. This will be his first season with
the Red Raiders*
Haley. Paul; Junior, ^21 years old, 6*1'* height, weight l60.^ He
grc-duated from Lockpoit. High School in Lockport, New York, with
the class of 1944, where he lettered two years in basketball.
He was a member of the basketball team last year and won a letter
in soccer this fall*
Nicolls, Clarence; Junior, 21 years old, 5^9” height, weight 160.
Graduated from Conneautville High Bchbol at Conneautville, Pa.
with cil^ss of 1945. He lettered 4 years in basketball. He was
a member of the 46-47 team.

Reed, Dick; Freshman, 18 years old, 'height 6*3^*% weight 152,
He graduated from Warren High School at Warren, Pa., with class
oi 1948, where he lettered 2 years in basketball and 2 years in
baseball. Played with Warren last year, a team vrtio won 22 straight
games and went as far as the quarter finals in the state.
R^hrel Don; Freshmen, 18 years old, height 5»H”, wiight 160.
He graduated from Warren High School at Warren, Pa,, with the
class of 194S, where he lettered 2 years in football and 1 in
basketball. He played with Warren last year, a team who won 22
straight games and went as far as the quarter finals in the
state.
Mihalich. Bill; Freshman, 22 years old, height
weight 145,
He graduated from McKeesport, High School at McKeesport, Pa., with
class of 1944* Had no high school basketball eaqjerience,
Ghe.ring. Harold; Junior, 22 years old, height 6*1»», weight 185,
He graduated from EdinbOro High School at Edinboro, Pa, with the
class of *43, where he lettered 3 years in football and 4 years
in basketball. He has wop a letter in football at Wooster Col-*
lege and has won a letter in basketball at Grove City. He has
also won two letters in soccer with the Raiders and one in bas­
ketball,

He graduated from Aspinwall High School with class of 1943 where
he lettered 1 year in football and 3 years in basketball. He won
a letter in basketball at Camegid Tech^ in *46 and one in football
at Princeton in *43- He was the varsity quarterback this past
fall,
Praetzei, jQldt; Freshman, 22 years old, height 5’ll”, weight 190.
He graduated from East High in Erie, Pa,, where he played 4 years
of varsity basketball. He played 1 year at Gannon College, This
is his first season with the Raiders.

Swam free style with Edinboro ;in 1947 and holds our varsity record for
the 60 yd. free, 100 yd. free, 220 ydi free, and the 140 backstrokei
Has lettered two years with the Raiders.

free style on the ‘47 and *48 team-and was a letterman. Graduated from
Sayre High School, class of 1947* Varsity letterman there in football.
Has had no high school acperience in swimming.
Palmer* John; Freshnan, age 19, height 5*9i*’, weight 148. He waa a
diver on l£.st year's team and won his letter. Graduated from Bradford
High School, Bradford, Pa., class of 1947* No competitive swimming in
high school.
Johnson, Heinz: Sophomore, age 19, height 5*11", weight 167* Swam free
style last year and won his letter. Graduated, from Colestock High

graduated from Perry High School in Pittsburgii, class of 1948, where
he won three letters in swimming. He is a backstroker and should be
our number one man in that department*

from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, class of 1943. He lettered
three years there in swimming. Swam at Hargrave Military Academy in
1944* Also has swam for Acquatic Club in Erie, and the Y teams
there. Won his letter in 1947 As the Raiders' breaststroker.

uated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, class of 1943. No

of 1947. He played football there. He will swim the free style

Wilson. Richai^; Freshman, age 19, height 5^10", weight I60. Grad­
uated from Leetsdale High School in Leetsdale, Pa., with class of
1947. He is from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania and a free style swimmer.

Wrestling
With four holdovers from last year*s squad, Edinboro expects to
have the stwingest wrestling team in the history of the school<

Some promising freshmen are Lou DeRubies, Don Malarkey, Bob Shaw, and

^ Malarkey, Robert; Sophomore, age 21, height 5'll”, weight 135 or
128 class. He graduated from Chartiers Tiirohship High School, where
he won four letters in wrestling. Ho won his letter as the Raiders’
135 pounder last year and finished third in the state teachers meet,
in his weight,
^ Santel, William; Freshman, age 18, height 5*10", weight 155 lb,
class. He graduated from Chartiers Township High School, where he
won three letters in wrestling as well as football. He played guard
on our football team here last fall. He won his letter here in
wrestling last year as the Raiders’ 155 pounder. He ranked first
in the state teachers meet in his weight and finished second in
the Interstate meet,

Malarkey, Donald; Freshman, age 19, height 5*10", weight 145 lb.
class. He graduated from Chartiers Township High School, where
he lettered four years in wrestling as well as pla.yed varsity
football there. He saw a lot of action as a center on Edinboro*s
football team this fall^
