ing spirited defense, limiting the opposition to
38.2 percent from the floor. That figure is even
more impressive when you consider that Lake Erie became just the second team to shoot better than forty percent from the floor, the
Storm hitting at 40.9 percent in Saturday's 89-65 Boro victory. Want some more numbers? Opponents are averaging 63.4 ppg. and
20.6 turnovers per game, and a smallish Boro outfit even holds a 2.4 rebounding advantage over the opposition ... the smallest player
on the Edinboro roster carries the biggest burden. It was probably no coincidence that the Fighting Scots squandered a lead against
Point Rark in game number two with point guard Adam Kaufman on the sideline the final 25 minutes after being poked in the eye. The
5'11" guard served notice of his talents a year ago when he handed out a school record 273 assists, ranking third in Division II. After a
slow start, he has caught fire during the five-game winning streak, handing out 10-or-more assists in three of the games. On Saturday,
Kaufman showed that his jump shot has returned, as he canned 3 of 5
three-pointers to finish with a career-best 15 points, adding 10 assists
for good measure. Kaufman is averaging 6.6 ppg., but more importantGolden Knights

averaging 3.9 ppg. and 3.6 rpg. a year ago in 23 games. Those
numbers are now 11.9 and 7.7, respectively, the latter figure tops
on the team. In addition, Stout leads the Scots in field goal percentage (62.7 percent) despi~e a subpar shooting night on
Saturday vs. Lake Erie ... sophomore Terrance Smith is the third
frontcourt starter. Though erratic at times, the 6'6" transfer from
~acramento City College is loaded with athleticism. He is averaging 8.3 ppg. and 4.4 rpg ... the fifth starter is Jean Paul, a 6'3"
senior in his first season at Edinboro after previously playing foot~all and basketball at Indiana University. The third Fighting Scot
m double figures at 10.6 ppg., Paul is also the team's top threepoint threat with 7 in 18 tries, and has 18 assists. Most notably,
he's become a defensive stopper ... Walcavich has received outstanding productivity from the bench, particularly sophomore Rob
Schodt. The 6'8", 225 lb. center has been a very pleasant surprise after seeing limited action a year ago. A former standout at
McDowell High School, Schadt is averaging 8.3 ppg. and 2.9 rpg.,
all the more impressive when you consider that's coming in just
over 13 minutes per contest. Schadt scored 14 points vs. Lake
Erie, his fourth straight game in double figures. In addition, he is
shooting 52.5 percent from the floor and 94.1 percent (16 of 17)
from the line. He has made 14 consecutive free throws ... sophomore Ian Johnson and freshman James Dickerson lend further
depth up front. Johnson, a 6'7" center, averages, 7.8 ppg. and 4.8
rpg., dropping in a season-high 14 markers on Saturday.
Dickerson, a former All-Ohio selection, has started three times,
averaging 4.9 ppg ... his numbers may not reflect it, but 6'1" freshman Jarrod Graham, out of George Junior Republic High School,
has been a significant contributor. The top backcourt reserve is
playing just over 22 minutes a game, averaging 3.0 ppg. and 3.3
rpg., with 12 assists.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS:
Gannon invades
McComb Fieldhouse with a 4-2 record and riding a two-game winning streak. The Golden Knights have played just once on the
road, that an 82-78 defeat at Saginaw Valley State. Like Edinboro,
coach Jerry Slocum's team has turned up the defense. None of
Gannon's first six foes have been able to shoot fifty percent from
the floor, as the Knights are limiting opponents to 39.2 percent
overall. It all adds up to Gannon giving up 69.8 ppg., while scoring at an 83.5 clip ... coach Jerry Slocum's team suffered a blow
when starting forward Kevin Hamilton, who averaged in double figures a year ago, left the team last week, but his departure coincides with the two-game winning streak, including Saturday's 8373 win over Northwood ... Gannon features a dynamic inside-outside combination in seniors Tony Lyons and Steve Moyer. The
duo earned second team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference honors last season. Lyons has already posted five
double-doubles, averaging 20.5 ppg. and 11.0 rpg. The 6'6" forward was named the GLIAC Player of the Week this past week.
He also leads the team in steals with 16 ... area hoops fans can
hardly forget Moyer's I-I-I-long three-pointer in last year's contest
at McComb. It's just one of many the 5'11" senior has made
throughout his career. Moyer is making a serious challenge at the
all-time Division II record for career three-pointers. With 351, he
stands sixth overall, needing 83 to eclipse the current record of
431 held by Tony Smith of Pfeiffer. He has already made 30 of 59
three-point bombs, an impressive 50.9 percent, averaging five
triples per game. Moyer comes in at 19.0 ppg., and also leads the
Knights with 23 assists ... freshman Rich Bush•joins Moyer in the
backcourt. The former Central High School standout was
renowned for his scoring abilities in high school, but has done a
s~lid job playing the point. )'he 6'2" performer averages 12.3 ppg.
with 22 assists and 13 steals. He dropped in a career-high 20
points vs. Northwood ... junior Zaid AI-Khas is a fourth Knight in
double digits. The 6'9", 245 lb. center played at the University at
Buffalo a year ago. He averages 14.2 points and 8. 7 rebounds,

Michael Johnson has definitely made ·a lasting

Rob Schodt, Garrity is a tenacious competitor. The 6' 1" sophomore is averaging 4.4 ppg ... senior Billy Poe and junior Dan

a 6'6" forward, is averaging 4.0 ppg. and 2.4 rpg. Pesut, a 6'8",
222 lb. center, shows averages of 4.3 ppg. and 2.0 rpg ... another
player to keep an eye on up front is Cory Coleman. A 6'5" freshman, the· original plan was to redshirt Coleman, but that ended
when Hamilton left the team. He has appeared in two games and
scored three points, but he was the Metro League scoring champ
a year ago at Central High School ...junior Jordan Vreeland (1.2
ppg.), a transfer from Hillsborough Community College, is the main
backcourt reserve.

LAST MEETING: 1997-98 -

The Fighting Scots rode Warren Chance and a strong second half
performance to victory at the Hammermill Center. With the contest tied at 38-3~ at intermission, Edinboro shot 62.1 percent over
the final twenty minutes while piling up 53 points. Chance was
unstoppable during that period, dropping in 26 of his game-high 36
markers. He made 12 of 19 field goals, including 6 of 8 three's,
and was 6 of 8 from the line. As if that wasn't enough, he pulled
down 9 rebounds. Freshman Amos Upshaw gave Chance ample

each, with Adam Kaufman scoring 10 points and handing out 8

MORE ON THE RIVALRY, PART I:
Last year's 91-79 Boro
win was the second of two contests between the two schools last
season. The Edinboro win at Gannon did snap a four game winning streak by the Knights over the Scots. Oddly enough, the
teams traded road victories in '97-98, with Gannon prevailing at
McComb Fieldhouse, 83-69, in late November. Troy Nesmith (33
points) and Steve Moyer (24) combined for 57 of GU's markers',
with Nesmith making 14 of 16 free throws and Moyer 7 of 10
three's. The Boro suffered through a miserable shooting night,
converting just 34.9 percent. Warren Chance paced the Boro with
23 points, Dwayne Butler with 19 markers.
MORE ON THE RIVALRY, PART U: While Gannon holds an
overall advantage of 50-25, the Bora-Gannon rivalry has been a
much more even matchup in recent years, particularly at McComb
Fieldhouse. Since Greg Walcavich took over as the Fighting Scot
mentor in 1989-90, Edinboro has won nine of 22 meetings. That
includes a 5-5 mark at McComb Fieldhouse. Recent history does

ing spirited defense, limiting the opposition to
38.2 percent from the floor.

He averages 14.2 points and 8. 7 rebounds,

Rob Schodt, Garrity is a tenacious competitor. The 6' 1" sophomore is averaging 4.4 ppg ... senior Billy Poe and junior Dan

a 6'6" forward, is averaging 4.0 ppg. and 2.4 rpg. Pesut, a 6'8",

when Hamilton left the team. He has appeared in two games and
scored three points, but he was the Metro League scoring champ

backcourt reserve.
