percent shooting from the floor, while forcing
20.8 turnovers per game. Consider that
HEAD COACH: Michael Grant (32-35, 3rd year)
Central State is the lone opponent to shoot bet
ter than forty percent from the floor this sea
son, the Marauders hitting at 51.5 percent in the lidlifter. The last four opponents have hit just 34.5 percent from the field. On Saturday,
the Lakers managed just 31.3 percent. The three-game winning streak has also found opponents scoring just 55.7 ppg... the catalyst
from both an offensive and defensive standpoint has been point guard Adam Kaufman. The sophomore’s absence was clearly evident
against Point Park, as he exited with an eye injury after playing thirteen minutes. He has been on fire since that time. After dishing out
12 assists against Wheeling Jesuit, the 5’H” sophomore handed out 10 more vs. Mercyhurst. That gives him 37 assists for the year.
But scoring passes are nothing new to Kaufman. As a freshman, he set a new Boro record with 273 assists. Kaufman already ranks
seventh in career assists with 310. He also has 10 steals in ‘98-99, good for second on the team... Jean Paul has taken over at guard
alongside Kaufman. The 6’3” senior has an interesting history. He pre
viously played football at Indiana University, then later joined Bobby
Knighfs basketball team. Paul is a player who’s contributions don’t
always show up in the box score. Most notably, he’s a defensive stop

ing ability. The former All-Ohio selection from Richmond Heights
High School averages 6.2 ppg... while not necessarily a deep
team, Walcavich has received excellent production from the
bench. Sophomore Terrance Smith leads the way at 8.8 ppg.,
adding 4.2 rpg. The 6’6” transfer from Sacramento City College
led the Scots with 17 points in the first meeting with Central State.
He came off the bench to contribute 15 markers on Saturday ...
sophomore Ian Johnson, like Michael Johnson coming off a lay
off since the ‘95-96, and sophomore Rob Schodt provide addi
tional frontcourt relief. Johnson, a 67” forward, averages 7.2 ppg.
and 5.2 rpg. Schodt, a local product from McDowell High School,
had a career-high 16-point output vs. Wheeling Jesuit, then added
10 points and 5 boards against Mercyhurst. The 6’8”, 225 lb. cen
ter averages 6.4 ppg., while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor
and 88.9 percent (8 of 9) from the line ... 6’1” freshman Jarrod
Graham, via George Junior Republic, backs up both guard posi
tions. After a slow start, Graham is becoming a major contributor.
He had 9 points and 4 rebounds in the Mercyhurst game, boosting
his scoring average to 3.4 ppg.
SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS: Central State, an NAIA insti
tution, invades McComb Fieldhouse with an impressive 8-0 ledger.
Included in that victory total is an 86-82 triumph over Northern
Kentucky In the championship of the Northern Kentucky
Tournament. The Norse are annually among the top outfits in
Division II. The Marauders have posted some interesting numbers
while on the way to their quick getaway, but most telltale is the fact
they force 22.5 turnovers per game. That helps negate a 48.2 per
cent shooting figure from the floor by opponents. Central State
also holds a rebound edge of close to five per game ... third-year
coach Michael Grant can call on a quartet of double digit scorers,
led by 6’7” forward Allwyn Jones. The junior is a transfer from
South Suburban Community College, and is leading the team both
in scoring (13.9 ppg.) and rebounding (6.5 rpg.). Jones comes off
a 21-point, 8-rebound effort at Urbana. He is shooting 56.0 per
cent from the field ... 6’5” senior Ortavius Walker is next in the
scoring parade at 13.3 ppg. The Atlanta, GA native also pulls
down 4.8 rpg... John Hester was a major thorn for the Scots in the
first meeting, dropping in 22 points and pulling down 9 boards.
The 6’6” senior is averaging 11.3 points and 5.4 rebounds, with 12
steals ... the fourth double figure operative is senior Chris Grant.
The 6’2” guard not only averages 10.8 ppg., but leads the
Marauders in assists (33) and is second in steals (16). Grant has
also made a habit of going to the charity stripe, canning 36 of 53
freebies ... the fifth starter is junior Shawn Blakney, a 6’4” guard.
Blakney scores at 5.1 ppg... Grant has made ample use of his
bench. Junior Kevin Burke, a 6’5” junior, leads the way at 6.4
ppg. and 3.1 rpg. Burke paces the Marauders in field goal per
centage (63.3 percent) ... Terrence Price not only averages 6.1
ppg. In a reserve role, but is the top three-point threat with 10 in 25
tries. Price is a 5*11” sophomore ... another reserve of note is 6’5"
senior John Smith (6.2 ppg., 3.0 rpg.).

Michael Johnson has definitely made a lasting
impression on opponents in his return to the Fighting
Scots. After not playing since the 1995-96 campaign,
Johnson has picked up where he left off - as an intimi
dating shot blocker. The 6’5” sophomore swatted away
six shots against St. Rose, then rejected four more shots
against Wheeling Jesuit. He has 15 for the year, giving
him a career total of 52, good for 12th all-time.

the contest was 31 Boro turnovers, offsetting a 43-31 advantage
off the glass. Both teams shot the ball well, with Edinboro coming
in at 51.9 percent from the floor, and Central State at 51.5 percent.
Five Scots reached double digits, led by Terrance Smith, who
deposited 17 points before fouling out. Troy Stout and Ian
Johnson added 12 markers, Johnson with 8 rebounds. Michael
Johnson had 11 points and 8 boards, while Jean Paul also
notched 11 tallies. The Marauders featured the 22-point, 9rebound effort of John Hester. Also in double figures were
Ortavius Walker (12 points), Allwyn Jones (11) and Shawn
Blakney (10).
