Greetings from the President

2004-05 Edinboro IVIen’s Basketball

Dear Family, Friends and Fans of the Fighting Scots:
Thank you for supporting Edinboro University athletics and the student-athletes who compete for our
football, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports, cross country,
track, soccer, swimming, and softball teams. \Ne are proud of their accomplishments athletically and aca
demically, and we are proud of our coaching stajfwho assist in making good things happen for students
and the University.
The Athletic programs at Edinboro University enjoy a rich history and tradition of excellence. This
amazing legacy will be among the points of pride celebrated during the University's Sesquicentennial in
the 2006-07 academic year. As we prepare to celebrate the University's 150th anniversary, we are guided
by the theme, "Building a prosperous future through academic excellence and civility." The learning, ded
ication, discipline, and sportsmanship that are central to the experience of Edinboro athletes also enable
their prosperity in other aspects of life. At the same time, athletic competitions contribute to the quality of life on our campus and
throughout the communities of northwestern Pennsylvania. Clearly, the Fighting Scots are a partner in the region's prosperity.
We encourage our Fighting Scot Fans to visit the campus as often as possible. I look forward to greeting you at our athletic,
cultural, and arts presentations.

2004-05 Season Preview

2004-05 Season Preview
Walcavich Ix>oks to Piece Together a Winner
With 420 career wins in 22 seasons as
a head coach, Edinboro University's Greg
Walcavich knows a thing or two about win
ning. He's led his Fighting Scots to six
straight winning seasons, and the 2004-05
campaign bears plenty of promise.
A combination of six returning letterwinners and five newcomers with impressive
resumes, leave hope for improvement on last
year's 14-14 finish. Despite the .500 record,
Edinboro went 84 in PSAC West action to
finish second. That marked the fourth
straight year the Fighting Scots were either
first or second.
In recent years Walcavich has cautioned
that the Fighting Scots would be a work in
progress, looking nothing in November like
they would in January. While that is likely
the case this year, as well, Walcavich feels it's
imperative to get off to a good start. A year
ago Edinboro went 4-9 out of the gates before
winning 10 of 11 contests.
"We have to be good early with the
schedule that we have," cautioned Walcavich.
"Not only with so many road games, but
with so many good teams. We have to be
good early to win. If we're just pretty good.

we're going to dig ourselves a hole."
Edinboro begins the season with six out
of nine games on the road, with two of those
teams — Virginia Union and Gannon - NCAA
playoff teams.
"It's conceivable that you can play well
and not win," Walcavich surmised. "When
that happens two or three times in a season,
players have a tendency to think something's
wrong. How the group can handle chal
lenges and adversity then becomes an issue.
We open the season at West Virginia
Wesleyan. Our second game is against
Virginia Union, a team that lost in the region
al semifinals by one point on a three-pointer
with three seconds left. They return their
whole group. When you have that coming
out of the shoot, you can play well and lose,
and nothing can be wrong."
Walcavich is hoping his 2004-05 Fighting
Scots has both the talent and experience to
avoid such pitfalls. Three starters are back,
along with three other letterwinners, and
three of the newcomers are transfers with
plenty of collegiate experience.
"I think we have a good group,"
Walcavich pointed out. "We have what I
hope is an effective group of veteran guys
and new guys. We have six play
ers back, and at some point or
another, four have started. We
have two guys who have been all
conference. Withjakim
Donaldson and Rob Sims we have
the makings of a good returning
nucleus. But just because you're
back doesn't mean you're better."
The key obviously will be
how quickly this group melds
together. In addition, Walcavich
noted that players will have to
adapt to roles. The players who
exhibit those virtues as a group
will take the floor.
"Time will tell who will
become the best group," admitted
Walcavich. "Going into it we have
a good mix of players. We have
talent, but we're not incredibly tal
ented. We have the talent to suc
ceed if we play well enough
together. We have enough size
and quickness, but then again
we're not overly quick or big.
We'll see how guys accept roles.
It's not that difficult to define the
five or six best players, but it is to
get five or six players who play
together and accept roles. That's
part of the team-building process."
In recent years the &ots have
relied on rebormding and defense

Ediiiboro University Men’s Basketball 2004-05

to win. It has not been a team blessed with
outstanding shooters. A year ago that was
one of the downfalls of the team, as Edinboro
held opponents to 40.0 percent from the floor,
65.6 ppg. and had a plus 6.3 reboimding
edge. But the Scots shot a meager 39.5 per
cent from the field and averaged 66.8 ppg.
"I would hope that we are able to shoot
the ball more accurately than we have the last
two years," stressed Wdcavich. "We've had
two seasons where we've had to be incredi
bly good on the glass and defensively to suc
ceed. But we haven't been able to make bas
kets, inside or outside. The influx of new
players should help. I'm always concerned
witii our ability to shoot the b^. We just
have not had a collection of terrific, offensive
basketball players for a few years mow."
With the likes of Califomia(Pa.) and
Indiana(Pa.) residing in the PSAC West, there
figures to be plenty of competition.
Walcavich feels its time to get back to the top
of the division, however. "We finished sec
ond last year. In the end maybe you reach
some satisfaction with that, but I don't think
any of us did. We expect more. That's a
blessing and a curse. At this point the group
has demonstrated the hunger and work ethic
required to lead into the t}^e of effort we'll
need later."

cent from the floor.
"Both Jakim and Arvin have progressed
from where they were last year," Walcavich
pointed out. "TTieir experience and increased
skill level will be keys for us."
Given his background, much will likely
be expected of Daren Tielsch. But the 6'7",
235 lb. junior will no doubt have some rust
on his game after playing just one game a
year ago at Robert Morris and sitting out the
entire 2002-03 campaign after transferring
from Penn State. A former all-state selection
as a prepster at Montour(Pa.) High School,
Tielsch averaged 4.0 ppg. and 3.4 rpg. in
2001-02 for the Nittany Lions, playing in 28
games with nine starts.
"Daren is far more accomplished
because of his age and experience," stated
Walcavich. "He's a very skilled offensive bas
ketball player who can score inside and out
side, and is a good passer. He learned to
play as a perimeter player."
Freshman Ryan McLemore may need
some seasoning, but Walcavich likes what
he's seen. "Ryan is a very raw offensive play
er but appears to have the heart and athletic
ability to succeed. He's shown signs he can
be a good defender and an adequate
reboimder."
McLemore is a thin 6'7", 191 lb. forward
who sat out last year after graduating from
St. Peter Chanel(OH) High School. He was
an honorable mention all-state selection as a
senior after leading St. Peter Chanel to the
Ohio Final Four in Division III.

Backcoiirt

Walcavich will choose two starters from
among four frontcourt players. No doubt
Jakim Donaldson will te one of them. The
6'8", 200 lb. senior just continues to improve,
and there's no reason that trend won't contin
ue this year. In 2003-04 he earned first team
All-PSAC West honors for the second straight
year after once again averaging a double
double. Donaldson led the Scots both in
scoring (14.8 ppg.) and rebounding (11.5
rpg.). He ended as the leading rebounder in
the PSAC and was second in Division II. In
addition, he shot 51.5 percent from the floor
while blocking 62 shots.
Donaldson enters his final season rank
ing ninth in career rebormds with 694 and
fifth in career blocked shots with 133. In
addition, he stands 31st in career scoring with
850 points He was named a Street & Smith's
preseason honorable mention All-American.
Not bad for a walk-on who virtually no one
wanted four years ago.
The other frontcourt returnee is Arvin
Kotrri, a former transfer from Kutztown who
was in his first season as a Fighting Scot a
year ago. The 6'8", 235 lb. senior is a talented
performer who had his ups and downs last
year. Kotrri averaged 6.8 ppg. and 5.1 rpg.

The depth is definitely there in the backcourt, so much so that Walcavich intends to
employ a three-guard lineup. Sorting out the
numerous contenders for those three spots
may not be as easy. One thing is certain Walcavich looks for better guard play than a
year ago.
"We have five guys on the roster who
have started for a team somewhere as a point
guard," added Walcavich. "I'm not positive if
that's the strongest attribute of any of the
five."
For starters there's Rob Sims, a senior
who has worked hard to erase the memories
of last year's frustrating season. The 6'3"
Sims averaged 14.4 ppg. and 4.8 rpg. while
earning second team All-PSAC West acco
lades. In addition, he had 59 assists and a
team-leading 29 steals. However, that was a
drop from 17.0 ppg. as a sophomore, and
after shooting 42.0 percent from the flooer
Sims shot a dismal 35.1 percent a year ago,
including 30.5 percent on three-pointers (36
of 118). He has shot better than 80 percent
from the line both years.

past," noted Walcavich. "I anticipate he'U find

ppg. and making 70 of 177 threepointers as a freshman while starting
26 games, Mitchell slumped to 6.3
ppg. a year ago with 40 trifectas in

"Tony Mitchell is a new guy
who has played at both guard spots.
I think he'll be a positive contribu
tor," predicted Walcavich.
Chris Ravello played two sea
sons at Division I Canisius before
transferring this summer.
Recognized as a strong defensive
player for the Griffs, the 6'3" junior
sat out last season after averaging
4.1 ppg. in 2002-03.
"Chris doesn't figure in the mix
at point guard, but he is as good or
better a shooter than any of the other
guys."
Joining McLemore as the lone
freshmen on the team is Devon
Knight. Though just 5'8", he's a tal
ented performer who helped lead
Penn Hills to the PIAA Quad A State
Championship a year ago. The
Rob Sims is a two-time All-PSAC West selection. He
Indians finished with a 24-6 record
with Knight at the point. Known for earned second team honors a year ago after averaging

Head Coach Greg Walcavich —

guiding the Fighting Scots to a 21-7 finish. Edinboro captured its first
PSAC West crown since 1985-86 thanks to a 9-3 finish in league play,
earning the right to host the PSAC Tournament. Unfortimately, a pos
sible NCAA Tournament berth was denied the Scots when West
Chester posted an 82-72 upset in the PSAC semifinals.
The Fighting Scots have finished either first or second in the PSAC
West each of the last four seasons, with a 34-14 record during that
period. Only Califomia(Pa.) at 36-12 has a better league record. A
year ago Edinboro was 14-14 overall while playing a schedule with
just 13 home games, but earned second place in the Western Division
with an 8-4 record.
After two straight years in first place in the PSAC West, the Scots
dropped to second in 2002-03, but still finished 17-11 after being
picked to finish fifth in the preseason. A similar scenario occurred in
2001-02, with the Scots going 18-9. The coaches' preseason poll had
picked Edinboro fourth.
Unfortunately, the three-way tie for first with Indiana(Pa.) and
Califomia(Pa.) saw the Fighting Scots have to go to Cahfomia for the
first round of the PSAC Playoffs, where the Scots lost, 82-70.
In all, Edinboro has made the NCAA Division II Playoffs three
times under Walcavich, while qualifying for the PSAC Tourriament
ten times. His 1993-94 squad finished with a 20-8 ledger, defeating
West Chester in a NCAA play-in game before losing to Indiana(Pa.) in
the regional semifinals. Tlie Boro made it back to the tournament in
'95-96, defeating Bloomsburg, 90-82, in the first rotmd. The Scots
squandered an 11-point lead to Califomia(Pa.) in the semifinals, losing
84-76. That concluded the season with a 21-8 mark, with Walcavich
capturing PSAC West Coach of the Year accolades for the second time.
Walcavich took over the Fighting Scot program in 1989-90, guiding
the Boro to one of its best seasons ever. Edinboro won its first twelve
games, the best start in nearly fifteen years, and was ranked in the
Division II top twenty. The &ots eventually finished 22-5, the most
wins since 1981-82. ^ three occasions the Fighting Scots were ranked

the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, ranking behind only Dick
DeLaney of West Chester and Clarion's Ron Righter in terms of
longevity Walcavich enters his 16th season as ihe head coach at
Edinboro University, and his 23rd overall.
Walcavich's tenure at Edinboro has been earmarked by win
ning basketball teams. He surpassed Jim McDonald to set the school
record for career wins during the 1998-99 campaign, and he recorded
his the 250th win at Edinboro during the 2002-03 season. Walcavich
has posted a record of 266-156 at Edinboro. Add in five seasons at
Birmingham Southern and two more at West Virginia Wesleyan, and
he owns a career mark of 420-219. Walcavich rai4« among ^e lead
ing active NCAA Division II coaches in both career wins and winning
percentage. He is 29th in winning percentage and 18th in career victo
ries.

in the nation's top twenty. The following sea
son the Scots made their second straight
appearance in the PSAC Playoffs under
Walcavich, finishing with a 18-10 ledger.
The Scots made it three straight seasons in
PSAC postseason action the next year, and the
second twenty-win season in three years,
with a 20-9 finish. Walcavich picked up his
first PSAC tournament win, an 81-78 triumph
over East Stroudsburg, before falling to
Califomia(Pa.) in the next round.
The 1992-93 campaign brought a very
unfamiliar result for Walcavich - a losing sea
son. The Scots finished at 12-17, losing eight
games by five points or less. The Boro more
than made up for it the next year with the trip
to the NCAA Playoffs. The '93-94 season also
saw the Scots finish 14th in the Division II
final rankings, their top finish ever. The 199495 edition added another milestone to
Walcavich's resume, as the Scots handed
number one ranked Indiana(Pa.) a 94-77 loss.
The season ended at 15-11.
Walcavich's fourth 20-win campaign at
Edinboro in '95-96 was followed by his sec
ond losing season, a 13-14 finish. Despite the
losing record, the Boro made it to the PSAC
Playoffs for the fifth time in his first eight
years. That mark improved to seven out of
ten the next two seasons, thanks to the 26-8
finish in '97-98 and the 16-12 ledger in '98-99.
After replacing four starters from the '97-98
squad, Walcavich directed the Scots to three
wins over nationally-ranked opponents. The
Boro upended lUP twice, including a 63-61
win in Indiana in the first round of the PSAC
Tournament, and St. Rose, an Elite Eight team
for the second straight season, a 5048 set
back.
The Scots appeared well on their way to a
third straight ISAC postseason appearance in
1999-2000 when starting center Jason Roseto,

the leading shot blocker m Division II, went
down with a broken hand. Prior to injuring
the hand, Edinboro was 10-6. The Scots
would lose six of its final nine contests with
out Roseto to finish at 13-13.
Walcavich took over as head coach at
Edinboro after a successful two-year stint at
West Virginia Wesleyan, where he posted a
40-19 mark. In his first season, he inherited a
team which returned just four players, but
quickly turned the Bobcats into a winner, fin
ishing at 18-10. His second season concluded
with a 22-9 ledger, including a pair of wins
over Edinboro, while playing all xmderclassmen.
Walcavich began his coaching career at
Birmingham Southern College in 1973, stay
ing for four seasons before obtaining his first
head coaching job at Alexander City (AL)
Junior College in 1977. After one year,
Walcavich returned to Birmingham Southern
as the school's head
coach. During his five
seasons as the head
coach, the NAIA affili
ate posted an impres
sive 11444 record, with
Walcavich named the
Coach of the Year three
times. His teams were
ranked in the NAIA Top
20 four of the five sea
sons, as high as number
two in 1979, and twice
appeared in the NAIA
National Tournament in
Kansas City, Missouri.
While at
Birmingham Southern,
Walcavich was recog
nized nationally in 1981,
being selected to serve

as an assistant coach for the United States
Olympic Festival in Syracuse, New York. He
coached future NBA stars, including Michael
Jordan.
In 1983, Walcavich moved on to the
Division I ranks as an assistant coach at Rice
University. He was involved in some of the
biggest wins in the Owls' basketball history at
Rice, including triumphs over Arkansas,
Houston and Notre Dame. After four years
as a member of the Rice staff, Walcavich left
for the head coaching job at West Virginia
Wesleyan.
Walcavich and his wife. Dr. Maureen
Walcavich, a professor in the Education
Department at Edinboro, have been married
for 30 years. They have two daughters, Sarah
(24), a graduate of Penn State who is in her
third year at the Georgetown Law School,
and Jennifer (21), a senior at Penn State.

Assistant Coacli Pat Cleary

Four years ago Patrick Qeary was hired
as an interim assistant coach following the
sudden death of assistant coach Bryant

Houston. That designation changed in the
spring of 2000, as Qeary was appointed a
full-time member of the Edinboro University
coaching staff. He served as a student assis
tant from 1997-99, helping the Fighting Scots
reach the PSAC Playoffs both years, along
with an NCAA Division II Playoff berth in
1997-98.
Cleary has played a large role in the
recruiting process. He has developed many
contacts and is tireless in his efforts to come
up with the next great Fighting Scot. Qeary
has had direct input in tracking down players
such as Kenny Tate, Blake Johnson, Rob Sims
and Rob Green, among others. In addition to
handling the day-to-day duties of recruiting

Edinboro University Men’s Basketball 2004-05

and scouting, he assists head coach Greg
Walcavich with the running and promotion of
summer basketball camps.
Qeary attended Sharon High School
where he played basketball for the Tigers. He
completed work on his Bachelor of Arts
Degree in 1999. In addition to his basketball
duties he is the co-director of the Athletic
Department Study Program.
Qeary is single and resides in Edinboro.
He is an active member of the Sons of the
American Legion.
