THE GAME STORY
After losing its first three games for the first
time since 1992-93, Edinboro righted itself
with weekend victories at East Stroudsburg
(74-67) and Kutztown (80-77 in overtime).
Now 2-3, the Fighting Scots look to even
their record before taking a break for final
exams. Greg Walcavich's team will not
return to the hardcourt on December 19
when it plays at Millersville.
Columbia
Union will take the court against Edinboro
for the third time in three days and the
fourth game in six days. The Pioneers
began their stretch of three games in three
days with a 74-64 loss at Fairmont State,
dropping to 3-5 and stretching their losing
streak to three games in a row. They play
at Mercyhurst this evening before invading
McComb Fieldhouse. Columbia Union owns
wins over Elizabeth City State (62-60),
Cheyney (78-62) and Saint Paul's (76-67).
Edinboro comes in averaging 69.8 ppg. and
giving up 72.8 ppg., while Columbia Union
scores at a 62.6 ppg. clip and gives up 66.4
ppg. The PSAC West race is well in the back

THE EBINB0R04;0LUMBIA UNION SERES
Edinboro leads 7-1

Edinboro holds a 7-1 advantage in the alltime series with Columbia Union, including
a 91-56 triumph over the Pioneers a year
ago. All fourteen Scots scored in that con
test, led by Kenny Tate with 15 points and
14 rebounds.
Blake Johnson added 14
points, while James Dickerson contributed
12. Abokan Bokpe led Columbia Union with
12 points. Edinboro held the Pioneers to
30.6 percent shooting from the floor and
held a wide 57-37 advantage on the glass.

THE COACHES
Edinboro mentor 6reg Waicavich is in his
13th season, posting a record of 219-125
during that period. The all-time leader in
coaching wins at Edinboro, Waicavich has
an overall career mark of 373-188 and is in
his 20th season as a head coach. Sandy
Smith does double duty for Columbia Union,
coaching both the men's and women's
team. Now in his second season at the
Takoma Park, MD school. Smith has a 10-23
record after leading the Pioneers to a 7-18
finish a year ago.

WHESJAKIM?
For the first three games of the year he sat
on the bench, a tall, thin freshman waiting
to get clearance from the NCAA's
Clearinghouse. That came late last week,
and lakim Donaidson immediately made an
impact. He scored 10 points while not
missing a shot (4 of 4 from the floor, 2 of 2
from the line) in his debut at Kutztown,

then grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds at
Kutztown. Making this story all the more
remarkable is that the 6'6" freshman from
Oliver High School in Pittsburgh is a walkon.

TATE GARNERS PRESEASON ACCOLADES
Kenny Tate once again received plenty of

preseason honors, culminated by his selec
tion as Division II Bulletin's preseason
Player of the Year. The 6'3" forward was
also selected a preseason All-American by
Basketball Times and Street & Smith's.
Here's a list of Tate's honors since arriving
at Edinboro:

- Division II Bulletin Player of the Year
- Basketball 77/77^5 All-American

RARE SLOW START
With losses to Gannon, Wooster and
Mercyhurst to open the season, Edinboro
was off to its first 0-3 start since 1992-93.
before picking up a pair of wins over the
weekend.

EVEN RARER-A HIH LOSS
Edinboro's 74-57 loss to Wooster on
Saturday represented the first loss to a
Division III team since Greg Waicavich took
over in 1988-89. The last time a Division
III squad defeated the Scots was in 198788, when Allegheny scored an 84-67 win.

WHO MADE THE SCHEDULE
Greg Walcavich's team has faced its most
demanding early season schedule since the
1997-98 squad competed in the Disney
Classic. While losing three straight games
to open the season, the combined records
of Gannon (22-8), Wooster (24-4) and
Mercyhurst (17-10) were 63-22 a year ago.

TIE REAL BLAKE JOHNSMI RETURNS
A year ago Olake Johnson led Division II in
three-pointers made per game, but he
made just 1 of his first 12 trifectas in the
first two games. The senior guard has still
not fully recovered the shooting touch that
saw him deposit 43 points on Shippensburg
and 40 on Clarion, but he is averaging 20.3
points over the last three games, and has
made 9 of 23 three-pointers during that
span. Johnson showed some signs of life
with 15 points at Mercyhurst, then had 25
points at East Stroudsburg and 21 at
Kutztown. He has made 10 of 35 threepointers. ^

TOP SCORBIB TANDEMS
The combination of Kenny Tate and Olake

season. It marked just the fifth time that
two Edinboro players had combined for

MCCOMB MAGIC
Edinboro is looking to recover some of its
McComb Fieldhouse magic. The Fighting
Scots own an impressive 51-9 record on
their home court since the 1996-97 season,
including 13-3 a year ago. However, the
Scots have lost two straight at McComb
Fieldhouse, dropping the PSAC Tournament
semifinal game to West Chester to conclude
the 2000-01 season, then opening this sea
son with a 74-57 loss to Wooster.

Columbia Union enters its game at Mercyhurst with a 3-5 record, and comes off a 74-64
loss at Shepherd on Sunday. The Pioneers look to snap a three-game losing skid ...
sophomore guard Michael Gordon threw up 22 three-pointers on Sunday, making 6. He
finished with 24 points. Gordon has made 34 of 86 three-pointers and is the team's lead
ing scorer at 15.4 ppg. ... Sullivan Phillips, a 6'7" senior who fills the role of point forward
for the Pioneers, added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Phillips leads
the Pioneers with 41 assists, 8 blocks and 11 steals, but has also turned the ball over 51
times. He is scoring 9.0 ppg. and pulling down 7.3 rpg. ... Raymond Strachan, a 6'1"
sophomore who averages 11.5 ppg., is shooting 76.0 percent from the floor (38 of 50)...
Columbia Union is shooting a respectable 45.6 percent from the floor, but only 32.9 per
cent on three-pointers and 56.3 percent from the line ... Columbia Union features plenty
of height on the front line. In addition to the 6'7" Phillips, the Pioneers feature 6'5"
JUlOkan Bokpe, a senior who scored 12 points against the Scots a year ago, and 6'8"Dante
Singleton, a sophomore who averages 7.9 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. while shooting 60.0 percent
from the floor.
