THE GAME STORY

A year ago Edinboro won its first PSAC
West title since 1985-86. The Fighting
Scots are not about to give up the crown
without a fight. lUP found that out on
Wednesday, as the Scots rallied from a 3713 deficit in the first half to upset the 13thranked Indians, 77-75. The victory boost
ed Edinboro's record to 15-8 overall, but
more importantly, the Fighting Scots are
now 6-3 in PSAC West action, one game
back
of
frontrunners
lUP
and
California(Pa.). Shippensburg owns an 815 overall ledger and is 2-8 in league play.
The Red Raiders did both Edinboro and
Clarion a fevor on Wednesday, handing
Lock Haven a 91-83 setback. Shippensburg
had lost nine games in a row at one point,
and is just 1-10 on the road, but the Red
Raiders have defeated Clarion and Lock
Haven in their last four games, and can't be
taken lightly.

THE EIHNBORIHHIPPENSHURG SERES
Edinbori leads 21-9

The Fighting Scots picked up a 74-66 win
over Shippensburg in this year's first meet
ing on January 19. Edinboro trailed by
eight in the first half before rallying for a
37-33 lead at the half. The Scots shot 50.0
percent from the floor in the second half
while limiting the Red Raiders to 33.3 per
cent. Four Fighting Scots scored in double
figures, led by the reserve duo of Brandon
Dominick and Duke Gartrell.
Dominick
dropped in 16 points and recorded 5 steals,
while Gartrell made 6 of 10 shots to finish
with 15 markers. James Dickerson added
13 points and Kenny Tate had 10 points and
12 rebounds. Ron banks led Shippensburg
with 19 points, while Alston Ellis added 14
markers.

THECBACHES

Edinboro mentor Greg Walcavicli is in his
13th season, posting a record of 232-130
during that period. The all-time leader in
coaching wins at Edinboro, Walcavich has
an overall career mark of 386-192 and is in
his 20th season as a head coach. Dave
Springer is in his first season as the head
coach at Shippensburg, but he is no
stranger to Red Raiders basketball, serving
as an assistant coach under Rodger
Goodling for 11 years. He was also the
head coach at Millersville for a season. He
owns a 19-30 career record.

SMAUISGOOD

The heroes were many in Edinboro's 77-75
win over lUP on Wednesday. One player
saved his top game of the year for the
Indians - Branden DnininlGk.

junior time and again drove into the impos
ing lUP front line and defied the odds. And
when he wasn't penetrating, he was pulling
up with an awkward looking three-pointer,
canning 3 of 5 from beyond the arc.
Dominick finished with season-highs of 19
points and 8 assists.

HOME SWEET HOME

Edinboro has two more home games along
with a road tilt at Slippery Rock to close out
the regular season. McComb Fieldhouse
has definitely been good to the Scots in
2001-02. Edinboro owns a 10-2 record in
home games, losing only to West Chester
and Wooster, and is 62-10 at McComb dat
ing back to the 1996-97 campaign.

Several hundred fans chose to depart
McComb Fieldhouse at halftime of
Wednesday's game against Indiana(Pa.).
Who could blame them. lUP scored the
first ten points of the game, held a 37-13
lead at one point, and still led 45-30 at the
half. Imagine their surprise when they
turned on the television set or picked up the
paper and saw the final score - 77-75,
Edinboro! The 17-8 run to close the first
half set the stage for the comeback, but
few could have expected the lead to evap
orate so quickly. Edinboro opened with a 91 run to startthe second stanza, and took
its first lead at 55-52 with 11:46 to play on
Duke Gartrell's three-pointer. The Scots
eventually built a nine point lead at-76-67,
a turnaround of 33 points! That came with
3:35 lo play, and the Scots would score just
one more point - a Dan Grabill free throw
- but the upset over the Indians, ranked
13th in Division II and number one in the
East Region, would be complete when lUP
missed a three-pointer in the waning
moments and was unable to get off anoth
er shot.

TATE GARNERS PRESEASON ACCOLADES

Kenny Tata once again received plenty of

preseason honors, culminated by his selec
tion as Division II Bulletin's preseason
Player of the Year. The 6'3" forward was

also selected a preseason All-American by

Here's a list of Tate's honors since arriving
at Edinboro:

THE TATE MEMOHLS

An Edinboro game program wouldn't be
complete without a Kenny Tate update, sta
tistically, Tate's 21-point, 10-rebound effort
vs. lUP was just run-of-the-mill stuff, but
his leadership in guiding the Boro back from
a 24-point deficit makes this one of the top
games of a distinguished career. The 6'3"
senior has now recorded U double-doubles
this season and 43 in his 77-game career,
and he has topped the 20-point plateau 12
times this season and 38 times in his career.

RyORY
UPDATE
Blake Jahnsan is expected to miss the rest of
the season with a leg injury. The senior
was averaging 14.2 ppg. with 57 three's.

BEHER LATE THAN NEVER

It's probably save to say the first half of the
season was a nightmare for Duke Gartrell.
The junior guard suffered through a horri
ble shooting slump, and first saw his start
ing role disappear, then saw his playing
time diminish. But Gartrell is known for his
work ethic, and he has emerged in recent
games to show why he was selected a team
captain. He has boosted his scoring aver
age to 6.0 ppg. and has now made 33 of
104 three-pointers while averaging 15.3
ppg. over the last four contests. That
includes a 14-point effort against lUP on
Wednesday. During that period he has
made 15 of 32 three-pointers.

After losing nine games in a row, Shippensburg has split its last four contests and invades
McComb Fieldhouse with an 8-15 overall record, and 2-8 in PSAC West play. While the
Red Raiders are out of the PSAC West playoff picture, they can definitely have an impact
on the playoff race, and already have, with wins over Clarion and Lock Haven. The Red
Raiders have won just once in eleven games outside of Heiges Field House, a 64-55 win
over East Stroudsburg, and have lost their last ten games on the road ... Shipopensburg
averages 66.3 ppg. and gives up 72.3 ppg., but the Red Raiders posted a season-high 91
points in Wednesday's 91-83 win over Lock Haven ... first-year coach Dave Springer
makes ample use of his roster, with 11 players averaging 10-or-more minutes per game.
All eleven have started at least one game ... Bon Banks, a quick 5'9" guard, is the lone
player scoring in double digits at 14.7 ppg. The junior has made 24 of 72 from threepoint range and has made 57 of 68 free throws (83.8 percent). In addition, he has 50
assists. Banks had 21 points, 5 assists and 4 steals in the win over Lock Haven ... sopho
more Alston Ellis is one of only two players to start all 23 games. The 6'2" guard had 12
points on Wednesday, boosting his average to 9.0 ppg. He also leads the team in
rebounding (4.7 rpg.), blocks (12) and steals (43)... former General McLane High School
standout lOffMadara is the other player to start every contest. The 6'0" junior leads the
team with 67 assists and is second in steals with 37. He is averaging 7.8 ppg. and has
made 16 of 42 three-pointers ... six Red Raiders have made 10-or-more three-pointers,
with LaSalle transfer AlaksandarPaviDViC making 23 of 65 triples. The 6'6" junior is aver
aging 9.0 ppg. and 3.9 ppg.
